For those of you who don't know it, James110261 is the one that keeps
this site running, for the most part, by doing all the tech thingys
that us computer stupid people have no concept of...
One of the most noticable things, at least right now, is that James
is the one responsible for putting "Beware the Beast" up on the
site...
So, I think it would be nice if everyone here gave James a thanks
right along with Neil and Dave, and oh yeah, that tea-making fellow,
Mikey...
Thanks James...

Thanks to James for getting it posted as well as all of the other stuff he does. I finally had time this weekend to look at some of the recent additions he made to the internal site and
it's wonderful stuff.
BTB Ch 11 SPOILERS
Chapter 11 is another fine installment. You can just feel things coming to a head. You can tell how well Dave has structured this story if you go back and read it all from the beginning. I'm thinking of the last
panel on page 22 (chapter 8) where Gideon looks at Skipper's grave and thinks 'Got room for more?' and it takes on a different meaning for me now that I've seen Gideon wonder at the top of page 33 if he
should save one of the remaining bullets for himself. When I first read page 22 I thought the 'room for more' he was thinking of was for the humans pursuing him, but now I'm wondering if Gideon was just then
starting to think that he might not make it out of this alive and he was engaging in a little gallows humor with himself. As nice as the artwork is, I think Dave has really given Gideon an interesting inner voice and
that it's this voice that really makes the comic shine.
The art is spectacular, as usual, but I was particularly taken with the last three panels on page 33. The two shots of Gideon in the cockpit of the ship, from both inside and outside, really show his isolation as he
realizes how trapped and alone he is, and then the final panel with the humans swarming all over the ship and the surrounding area really show how screwed he is.
Can't wait to see how this all ends.

Thanks also to Greg Harris (Greg #2) who supplied me with the scans for this script. It's very odd (to say the least), so I thought it worthwhile to add the info from Legend of the PotA
to provide context. For those purists who just want to print the script without the embellishment, just start printing with page 2.

And by the way, James' use of the soundtrack on the site has
inspired us to try to release a cd with the comic when it is
published.....so he is also the 4th Beetle...I mean Beast...oh, you

What is POTA?
By Helen
POTA is thinking, reasoning, talking chimpanzees, orangutans, and
gorillas.
and mute humans.
POTA is Roddy & Kim.
POTA is John Chambers.
and Apes makeups.
POTA is vivid olive greens, goldenrods, and plumbs.
POTA is glyphs!
POTA is time travel.
and the Forbidden Zone.
POTA is about building friendships...
and maintaining fragile relationships.

registed WHERE this comic would take us...to the forbidden zone, with some
of the most amazing desert landscapes I have seen....to the spaceship....to

Great writing Dave, great art Neil....

Thanks to James for getting it posted as well as all of the other stuff he
does. I finally had time this weekend to look at some of the recent
additions he made to the internal site and it's wonderful stuff.
BTB Ch 11 SPOILERS
Chapter 11 is another fine installment. You can just feel things coming to a
head. You can tell how well Dave has structured this story if you go back
and read it all from the beginning. I'm thinking of the last panel on page
22 (chapter 8) where Gideon looks at Skipper's grave and thinks 'Got room
for more?' and it takes on a different meaning for me now that I've seen
Gideon wonder at the top of page 33 if he should save one of the remaining
bullets for himself. When I first read page 22 I thought the 'room for more'
he was thinking of was for the humans pursuing him, but now I'm wondering if
Gideon was just then starting to think that he might not make it out of this
alive and he was engaging in a little gallows humor with himself. As nice as
the artwork is, I think Dave has really given Gideon an interesting inner
voice and that it's this voice that really makes the comic shine.
The art is spectacular, as usual, but I was particularly taken with the last
three panels on page 33. The two shots of Gideon in the cockpit of the ship,
from both inside and outside, really show his isolation as he realizes how
trapped and alone he is, and then the final panel with the humans swarming
all over the ship and the surrounding area really show how screwed he is.
Can't wait to see how this all ends.

.html Hey Mark,
I'm sorry mate - when I asked you to get back posting I forgot to mention
there has been some hurt feelings over some of the comments made re. comic
books and I recently asked that the topic be made "taboo" so people can get
over this and on with things that DON'T upset individuals. This is VERY
serious....some fairly important group members have had their feathers
ruffled and one particulary high profile member left the group (then
thankfully returned)....and yet ANOTHER particulary high profile member left
the group last night....and if he does NOT return we will all feel it
STRONGLY.
HOWEVER - I also agreed with John R that most of this is down to what POTA
is to an individual - what MAKES it POTA - what is the SPIRIT/SOUL of POTA.
I have to say here and now that probably THE most important message from
POTA was that if we humans don't stop squabbling and fighting and learn to
live inpeace, we will ultimately destroy ourselves and eachother. This is
why I often assume POTA people are pacifists and people who strive for
resolution. This is what I expect from all of you, and it is what I try to
practice myself. I know we all make mistakes, but I hope we are all on the
same team here.
Mark, I accidentally appoved your last message then had to rip it out
(delete it) much like Landon's frontal lobe! It's a shame because it was
very well written and couldn't have upset anybody (you would THINK), but
like I said people need to cool off.
I'll keep the message and in a week or so I'll talk to all those who got
upset and we'l try to get resolution.
Let's all be nice, people.

+++ I think I could have a really good try at this. But I'd be
repeating myself.
If you want to discuss the quality and success of Schaffner's film:
It's all about time, place, politics, life experience of the people
with a direct influence on the production... Expectations, Arthur
Jacobs not wanting to let it go, Heston deciding to commit, the last
possible time when you could take a $10m chance not completely based
on audience demographics -- basically because Zanuck Snr.'s
aftershave still permeated the corridors at Fox.
Heston commits to an insane project because he simply "believes in
it" and suddenly it's a viable commodity. Because of that, Zanuck
Jr. says "yes" as well, and he's not stupid, but he does it on trust.
Then it's still about ideas sold on a nod and a wink. Art. Hard
Work. Line producer Mort Abrahams says to Schaffner three weeks
into principal photography in Utah or somewhere: "Man, how many
days are we going to keep shooting Heston and the boys walking
through the desert?". Schaffner replies: "As long as it takes. I
need to set up the scenario properly."
And do we all agree that the long desert walk set-up works??
I could go ON and ON, but I think that the spirit and soul of POTA,
and therefore the movie they made and the movie that we LOVE -- can
be ultimately defined as a collective of their experiences. LIFE
EXPERIENCE ENABLES A WRITER. The need to make good drama and being
given the environment in which to make it.
Boulle worked for the Resistance during WW2. He
didn't spend his early middle-age watching tv (unlike Tim Burton).
Don't forget he also wrote KWAI -- which is "quite good". Michael
Wilson (writer) who made a significant contribution to the
screenplay -- was a blacklisted writer after the McCarthy hearings.
But he stayed at the typewriter. And then
you've got Rod Serling -- and none of us need an introduction to him.
As Sidney Lumet says: Time, Place, People. Work hard and be
confident that you've got the absolute best considering the
circumstances. Script foremost, then cast, then see what you get.
In the film business, it's always, ALWAYS been a crap shoot (to make
a "good" film), even given the facts above. But in 1967, the dice
rolled out beautifully for Schaffner and his Gang.
I think that's basically because they were clever people.
My two cents.

My original ends about the same place as chapter eleven - that has just been

No... Now we are going to have to kill you :0)

The original title was actually `Mallus' which was my original name for
Gideon. I liked the name Mallus because I thought it sounded a little like
`Malice'. It then became `The final stand' Then when it was to be a comic it
changed to "Last stand in a Zone Forbidden" as a nod to the 70's Marvel style
of story titles and finally 'Beware the beast ' as we felt the previous titles gave
too much away (always a problem).
I think the comic version is very faithful to the original. Gideon speaks more
(too himself) and it's been mentioned that you get a clearer idea of what's
going on in his head - other than that it's pretty much the same.

The CONQUEST Gorilla was never made... They went with the brown/maroon outfit
Gorilla instead... And the Gorilla Sgt. (whose stripes really indicate a

universe for years. Thanks to other published authors, I had to
change my POTA universe to my own. It rather working out nicely,
though. Can't complain. Though I have to admit that I've had a sneaky
idea that my universe is POTA. But hell, the publisher's don't need
to know, do they? In any case, I having fun --- being sneaky that is.
Fire away guys. My vote is alternate, though I like the filler.

exclusive soldier ape in a red uniform. However, originally they were going
to do a "Conquest:" gorilla (I have a picture in a action figure mag) but I
guess they decided soldier apes sell better.
Zira is pretty common. But I have a Zira prototype I found for $ 5 bucks
at a collectible shop (they didn't know what it was). It's the same Zira
made from different materials and colors and it has writing on it ("Lift"
and "16p"). I guess the store thought some kid wrote on it, so they gave her
a rifle and put her up for sale. I wonder how they got her.

.html OK, In Escape, Doctor Milo is murdered/killed by a Gorilla. But Gorilla's
even in the wild (I'm not counting the mutated ones from the Planet series, who
are obviously more aggresive than normal) are not aggresive creatures. They
do a lot of posturing and such, but they don't normally attack. And if this
gorilla was depressed, his activity should have been down, not up. Could it
have been the talking that upset him, or Milo's loss of temper? I would have
liked to have seen Milo last a bit longer.

Anyway, just managed to catch the last 2 chapters of BTB...
It's still lovely Mike, and I know what you're doing. Chapter 11
did not push the story forward AT ALL, except to make it all a
little bit more heady for Gideon. You're obviously using that
dramatic tool --- "Make 'em wait and then give it to them in the
last chapter."
BTB is actually quite a beautiful thing, though. Congrats. To make
an apparent villain the underdog AND MAKE IT WORK is really clever.
Out of the entire story, the one thing that took my breath away was
that final splash page at the end of Chapter 7 -- Gideon looking at
Brent's ship. Absolutely exquisite -- and, to be serious for a
second, if Hollywood actually understood why people like you and I
love that PARTICULAR image so much, they might actually be able to
make us a decent new PLANET OF THE APES film.

Seriously though - there is no question this is DAVE's story....and a
wonderful one at that. As I said recently - look at all the wonderful
places he took us!
When I read the story it was perfect - except it just missed out on my
"checklist" for a few reasons. Yup - formulaic old Whitty was worried the
fans may want more (greedy humans!). What I suggested does not really
change or develop the story - it just enables the reader to make Foster
suffer by drawing more in more detail!
You'll see......
Oh - and in case you did not guess....the final chapter - well, the art is
better than all previous chapters!

Those sneaky little film makers!! Trying to hide the twist ending like

Actually, whoever posted the comment about the cloud covered night
preventing them from realizing where they are (by seeing the stars)
pretty much hit the nail right on the head. It was a plot device, but one
that fit rather well into the story considering the fact that it was
supposed to be a post-apocalyptic Earth.
BTW (for all you astronomy types out there)- I remember once (a very long
time ago) reading an article stating that at some point down the road
(thousands of years maybe?) that people in the Northern hemisphere will
be able to see all the stuff that people in the Southern hemisphere see
now (the Southern Cross, etc). It almost read like the planet would
eventually rotate upside-down on it's axis (I hope I'm phrasing that
correctly). Does this sound familiar to anyone, and if so, wouldn't it be
feasible that this had happened to 40th Century Earth- either by natural
events or by the effects of a nuclear war?

.html Well, a bit of an OLD topic really - sorta!
I spoke to the boss at Rittenhouse recently and here is what he had to say:
Hi, Michael. Things are going okay. We don't have too many new sales at
this point, which is the bad news. The good news is that I was just at Fox
and had a chance to view the photo archive for the first movie, and I found
a bunch of interesting behind-the-scenes photos, and some other good shots.
My game plan is to create another 9-card set of BTS cards, and combine it
with an autograph card we have from Linda Harrison. Expect that sometime
early next year. Will likely be only a few hundred sets.
I'm still after the studio to grant us rights to the TV show and the
cartoon, but it's low priority for them (and me, quite honestly), so I am
just waiting until they get around to it. If we can pull that together,
then I think we may work up a full series of cards using everything APES.
You would have liked visiting the photo archive with me, but it would not
have been worth traveling from Australia to do so. I didn't spend more than
an hour there to see everything. It was not as exhaustive a selection as I
had envisioned, although I only viewed images from the first film. If I had
looked at all 5 movies, it would have taken me 5 times as long. Still, it
was only marginally impressive.
Thanks for your support, and keep in touch.
Jeff, maybe he needs to know about Natalie's photos? But I imagine the best
of them are now "out there"!

Roughly 300 of the 999 remain, which is really not a bad number. But it

made a second series with more images of Heston that have never been seen
before.
Would have been nice.

.html Speaking of people doing things for people, I was lucky enough to hear a
great interview at work the other day. It was Bruce Smeaton, talking about
his good mate Jerry Goldsmith.
I was working so I didn't catch it all, but I'm sure Smeaton was saying he
convinced Jerry to buy a house in Melbourne where Jerry spent most of his
last years. It was very interesting and I would imagine not "typical".
So.....I thought maybe Rory and other Goldsmith fans might like to hear this
tribute to the great man, and I made some inquiries. Sadly, I need to find
$130 (AUS) = around $95 (US) to get a copy, and I am on a deadline because
they only keep 'em for so long.
I would really like to get a project underway to get this interview and
convert it to a downloadable audio file - maybe with a slideshow to
accompany - and make it available to fans (as the Power Records and other
treats are now available).
I'll pay 1/4 of the cost - so I'm looking for people to pledge contributions
to this worthy cause. Email me privately if you want to pledge - I won't
ask for commitment until we have enough to cover the $130 (AUS) = around $95
(US).
Last time I tried this I ended up paying for the whole project myself - I
won't be doing that this time.
Once I have the tape, I'll need to assemble a project team to convert the
Audio,(Hunter - you have your hand up I see!), contribute photos and other
things - but first things first.

ones on the various uniforms, but one can't help notice that some of

Thanks a lot for asking, Dave. It took a while, but I finally did recieve
them and they are both really awesome! Both are really superb tributes to
the Apes films. Both soundtracks are really impressive, each with 32
tracks, for goodness sake! The booklets with each disc are wonderful
because they feature a lot of photos (some I'd never seen before) and a load
of great info to read.
I am more than satisfied that I got my money's worth with both discs and I

that hosts my web page is down and won't be back up until sometime
Friday afternoon.

.html Good Morning all! Well, probably not morning for many of us, but
good day (g'day) to those.
Overnight there have been some major changes to the group.
James left the group a few days ago and since then he has been
secretly demobilising the Internal Internet Site and raiding the
photos and files. So please have a look on the Photos and Files
Sections to determine if he took anything of yours - I know
he "deleted" many of Neil's infamous home-page pictures, and I hope
you are not also a victim. If anything has gone, contact me
privately and I'll check with James to see if he still has these.
I'm sure he did not do this as an act of sabbotage, but he has
definitely been a little ambitious in taking too much!
As you all know from the private emails I have sent you in the past,
some of James' antics (like removing my moderator powers) were
getting rather old with me, and I have been considering the
establishment of a new group. I think the DG is dead now....it
served its purpose and I'm thankful to see POTA fans free to discuss
what they love, but this is no longer the DG in my opinion.
With all the wonderful projects the Official International Planet of
the Apes Fan Club is now offering, I am starting to populate a Fan
Club Group. It will be essentially the same gang and many of the
same ideals, but I will be tightening up on transparency and
accountability. The moderators here know how I feel about
saying "there is no swearing allowed" without the provision of a
definition of what swearing is, and I am going to try to make the
rules EXTREMELY clear to everyone......so it will be no surprise if
someone is found to violate the rules.
I will be looking at monthly themes as well. It will not restrict
people to talking about that theme only, but it will encourage
people to talk about the theme and offer opinions, illustrations
etc. I already have a bunch of Neil Foster originals here to kick
off the campaign, and I have many other exciting plans.
One last thing....I am really quite shattered by the incredible
amount of wheeling and dealing that has gone on behind my back - the
relocation of the Internal website and the recruitment campaign that
accompanied that. Under normal circumstances, I would be wishing
the best to them, but these are not normal circumstances. So I
would ask that people agreeing with me about the underhandedness of
it all give voice to protest...tell James what you think. I don't
expect any of it will get through - but at least he will know.
Special thanks to all who made this group happen. Now I hope you
will join me on the exodus to the Promised Land! I will be adding
everyone's profile to the new group slowly over the next few days -
until then, let's continue to chat and maybe now focus on what you
want of the new Fan Club group. Anyone who does not wish to be part
of the new group, please contact me privately.

is this a new site you're offering?...
Sounds intriguing...What do you want from us at the outset?...

What was all the hubub about? I had no idea that James had left. I was out of town last week and am not real sure what was going on.
Anyway, let me know about the new group and I'm in...just need to know where it's gonna be located. Also, what do I have to do to get into the Internation Fan Club of yours? Are there dues to be paid or is it
just a sign up and you're in kinda thing? Let me know.
