unnumbered one that concludes Escape and starts Conquest, meaning we
may all be missing #16 which should be the beginning of "Escape" and
the unnumberesd one is #18!

.htmlTerry,
Congratulations to you and your team for this accomplishment!
I've never heard of Ape Crazy. How many back issues are there of
that mag? Please tell us a bit about that fanzine.
Although there has been a lot of talk over the past couple years
about Chronicles, we haven't seen much of you until recently. Are
there any recent posts summarizing your efforts for those of us who
are unfamiliar with the Planet of the Apes Fan Club?
I look forward to seeing Chronicles #37.

episode involving the disc, so if Zaius were to have the confiscated disc, it'd
have been saved for the plot of a later episode...)
And as far as Whitty's question of "What happened to the disc," my guess is
that it was just something that could pop up in the plot of one episode, be
forgotten for a few, then brought back again when needed... They had no clear
plans for the show's continuity, and the disc was just introduced as a plot
device... Had the show gone on (as it should have!) I am sure the disc would have
reappeared... From episode to episode even their backpacks come and go... The
same can be said (hypothetically) about Virdon's disc...

.htmlWell, let's start with "Terror" for example (sorry Helen I know you
don't have this one yet).
Now, I think the START of this comic is as close as you get to the
"feel" of the POTA series from Marvel comics.
There's the Gorillas taking on the role of the KKK, Alex and Jason the
fugitives. It appears in issue #1, BEFORE the comic of the first POTA
movie! That leads to me thinking again that many readers would have
thought it WAS a movie or TV Show!
And I like the art. I know I'll be criticised for saying so, but I do
prefer Neil's REAL looking apes. I always have - since I was a young
POTA fan and artist (only until I realised to be REALLY good would
require EFFORT!), I always wondered WHY they could not get the LOOK
right.
Well, now I know! It takes too long (right Neil!).
As a side issue, Neil has been telling me he wants to change his
artistic STYLE to something more streamlined. Am I alone in saying
"NNNOOOooooo!!!"?

Yes I do! I also had another look at them and they are not reprints
of the Newton #1 but are actually reprints of the US #1 without all
the adverts and Marvel stuff. It has the same strips (same length as
well) and they have the same articles/photos sections as the US
version #1 too.
The ones I have are from 1978 and 1982. The '78 one has a No1 on the
left that is badly covered over on the '82 reprint which also has a
higher price. I don't know if there were any others released, these
are the only two I have seen.
Once again I've uploaded scans of the covers to the photos section -

the
chronometer shows for the TV series is 3085 (and like someone said, Burke
read that
year off too...) He also said "It may be further...That's when it stopped
working..." That's what I think happened... I don't put full belief in the
reliabilty of those instruments, especially not when they could have "flipped
over" like a car's odometer... They probably flip, flip again, and get all
out of whack... That's just a theory of course... Anyway, the 3085 year is also
mentioned on the back of one of the TOPPS trading cards, and in one
of the novels, it says something like "The year 3085: Apes reign, ignorance
rules, and the only good human is a dead human"... BUT in the book's stories,
they mention being 2,000 years from now, so who knows for sure...
But 3085 is pretty much the year mentioned...

There's no worries on that front, my apes will always look like POTA
apes because that's how I like them!
What I did want to do was get away from so much detail and quicken
things up. If you have a look at BtB you will see how 'carried away'
I get doing the little details, I reckon I could have saved 6 months
(and a lot of lead & ink) by not drawing the rocks and desert
landscapes with so much detail in them!!

Neil, after all the accolades in the POTADG regarding your art in BtB,
you are actually contemplating such drastic changes?
I'm no artist, but as a reader I have to put in my 2.5 (CDN) cents.
What has always inspired me when reading a comic story has been the
very thing you are thinking of downsizing: the details. I think of all
the artists I truely enjoy and each and everyone of them earn that
distinction because of the detail that they put in. There is nothing
more annoying than seeing a good artist produce a 'nice' rendition of
a scene but skimping out on the details. I am but one reader who
enjoys taking the time to really LOOK at the panels in a comic and SEE
what was drawn. You've mentioned your admiration for Ploog, so go back
to "Terror" and take a good look at the detail there. No skimping. I
suspect that refering back to whatever artists you are inspired by
will also be artists that pay attention to detail.
As an artist you of course have the right to do whatever you want, and
if you really do feel that your art would improve then I guess you
should do it. Maybe, the look would be different and to your liking,
and maybe others would also approve. But, if the only reason you are
going to change is to same time, then I suspect that the end results
will suffer. The way I see it, artist who take short cuts are a
dime-a-dozen. But once and artist has achieved the mastery of their
art, as you have done,... well that takes talent and talent put to
good use.
I'm sure we'd all be interested in seeing what direction your future
art heads in, but I'm hoping that you don't tone down on the details.
BTW, I've been meaning to ask: Are there any other of your works that
we can see online? How about past publications? If it's advertizing
art I guess we'd be out of luck, but if it's and old comic...

.htmlWell Foster, the fans have spoken (HA HA!).
So we want all future stories with lots of sip interiors and all set
in the forbidden zone, right? ;)
Dario, the only problem is that Neil certainly DOES have to do
SOMETHING if we are to adhere to a 22 page comic per month
deadline! At the moment, we have 2 parts of BTB "up our sleeves".
Maybe we'll ahve 8 or so 22 page comiics ready when we start
printing and this won't be an issue, but at the moment to go "live",
we need to churn out around a (completed) page a day and some of
those pages in BTB took that long to PLAN!
But I sure agree that, in a perfect world, it would be GREAT to keep
the DETAIL!

someone said, Burke read that year off too...) He also said "It may

happened... I don't put full belief in the reliabilty of those
instruments, especially not when they could have "flipped over" like
a car's odometer... They probably flip, flip again, and get all out
of whack... That's just a theory of course... Anyway, the 3085 year
is also mentioned on the back of one of the TOPPS trading cards, and
in one of the novels, it says something like "The year 3085: Apes
reign, ignorance rules, and the only good human is a dead human"...
BUT in the book's stories, they mention being 2,000 years from now,
so who knows for sure... But 3085 is pretty much the year mentioned...
----------------------------------------------------------------
*** I'm gonna have to disagree here. [Don't take it personally,
though, Cougar, okay? ;)]
In the opening credit sequence, we see the EARTH-TIME chronometer
fast-forward from AUG 19 1980 to JUL 14 3085. The last part of
that "time-warp" slows down to a crawl right before it stops on that
last date, July 14, 3085.
The sense I get is that the time-warped EARTH-TIME dates onscreen
there represent what Virdon later says "must" have happened: they hit
a "time warp" which could've sent them 500 years into the future...
even 5000, possibly.
The EARTH-TIME clock reading they see in the ship the next morning,
when Farrow leads them to it and draws the gorilla guard away, reads
3-21-3085.
Notice the differences: the opening credits has the "month" spelled
out in a 3-letter sequence -- AUG 19 1980 and JUL 14 3085. But the
actual cockpit console display uses strictly numbers, "3-21-3085"
rather than "MAR 21 3085". The unit DISPLAYING the Earth-Time date
might be off-kilter, but the telemetry-recording device (which, I
think, is what the opening credit sequence is meant to convey)
portrays the actual dates from the beginning of the Time Warp until
the end of it.
So, does that mean that Virdon's ship landed back on Earth on July
14th, 3085? Not necessarily...
Firstly, remember that the "Emergency Homing Device" must have been
working properly, since their ship DOES manage to get back home -- to
Earth from Alpha Centauri where WHATEVER it was that sent 'em into a
time warp was.
Secondly, their ship's retro-rocket engines must also have been
working properly, since they don't smash into the ground like a
meteor. It's all "seen" offscreen, by Farrow and Arno (and Arno's
dog), and you can hear the whine of the ship's engines as it descends.
If the homing device was working, and the retro-rockets were working,
then doesn't it follow that the EARTH-TIME clocks would also -- in
all probability -- have been in working order, too?
Well, I think so.
Come to think of it, the little button in the portside wing's aft
triangular section ALSO works (and AFTER the ship lands), since the
hatch opens up when Farrow presses it.
At THIS point, the ship is still working. All that mechanical sound
that Farrow (and we, the audience) can hear when he enters the cabin
seems, to me, to be proof of this. Why would the EARTH-TIME
chronometer "stop working" (as Burke muses), yet all the other
instrumentation KEEP ON working?
Now, one MIGHT be tempted to say that, "Sure, then, they were time-
warped ahead from August 19th, 1980 all the way to July 14th, 3085...
so that the reading "3-21-3085" MUST be wrong" -- but, ahhh, here's
where my infamous "unflubbing" theory comes to the rescue!
What could possibly have caused their ship to endure a time warp that
could hurl them -- in mere SECONDS of Ship-Time -- 1,105 years into
the Future? What, in the "real" world (or, Universe) is known to be
able to "bend Time" in such a fashion?
Black Holes, that's what!
A black hole, being made of matter compressed to INFINITE density (to
a point, a "singularity"), has regions around it with such high
gravity that Time itself is bent. Gravity is a type of acceleration,
and as Einstein proved with his theories of Relativity, acceleration
causes a divergence in Time when you compare the initial "frame of
reference" and the accelerated "frame of reference". Simply put, if
you accelerate away from a state of rest, your ship's onboard clock
will tick SLOWER than one left behind. Similarly, if your ship is
subjected to humongous gravitational forces, your clock will
similarly SLOW DOWN compared to another clock which is not under the
influence of such high gravity/high gravitational acceleration.
In my scenario, Virdon's ANSA ship is equipped with a warpfield
generator, and his ship's warpfield buffers the ship (and the 3
astronauts within it) from the crushing gravitational tides of the
unseen black hole they encountered in the Alpha Centauri system. Once
their ship began experiencing "radioactive turbulence", their ship
probably went into an automatic "safety" mode and re-activated the
warpfield which got 'em there in the first place.
The only trouble, though, is that near the Event Horizon of a black
hole, the escape velocity is EQUAL to lightspeed, and the ANSA
vessels are designed to be flown at a "warp speed" that is NOT that
of light -- "c", or 299,792,458 meters per second -- but, as Taylor
says in "PLANET", "... according to Dr. Hasslein's theory of Time in
a vehicle travelling NEARLY the speed of light..."
Their ship, when at "warp", only goes to "NEARLY" the speed of
light... and they need to go FASTER than that to escape the clutches
of a black hole.
In my scenario, that's exactly what happens. Virdon has Jones
activate the "Emergency Homing Device" -- which, in my scenario, is
merely a Navigational program that tells the ship WHERE to go, and
along what specific trajectory/flightpath. But the ship merely goes
around and around and around the black hole -- in a "straight" line
curved into a circle... spiraling down... down... down... beneath the
Event Horizon and towards the Singularity...
But then Virdon increases the warpfield strength, causing it to
accelerate to higher and higher "warp factors", if you will. And,
after doing so, the ship is able to "warp" to a velocity equivalent
to much much MUCH higher speed than mere lightspeed. They accelerate
to a warp speed that must be HUNDREDS of times faster -- even
THOUSANDS of times faster than lightspeed. Because not only do they
escape the clutches of the black hole, but they zip >BANG-ZOOM< a
distance of 4.34 lightyears (over 41 trillion kilometers) in only a
few seconds of Ship-Time.
But... somehow, by going into a sort of "warp overdrive" from inside
the Event Horizon of a black hole, they ALSO went into ANOTHER type
of Time Warp -- one that sent them BACKWARDS through Earth-Time,
during those few seconds of Ship-Time. One moment it was AUGUST 19
1980 (Ship-Time) and JULY 14 3085 (Earth-Time)... and the NEXT moment
it was AUGUST 19 1980 (Ship-Time) and MARCH 21 3085 (Earth-Time).
When they zipped back the 4.34 lightyears from Alpha Centauri to
Earth, they ALSO zipped backwards through Time about 115 "retrodays".
In other words, for every lightyear they traversed in "warp
overdrive", they ALSO went back in Time (EARTH-TIME) about 26 and a
half days. Since they went back a total of 115 "retrodays", from July
14th to March 21st, then they COULD have gone even farther back in
time if they hadn't been "committed" to the trajectory that Jones had
programmed into their navigational computer when he activated the
homing device.
Similarly, when Taylor's ship left its destination 320 lightyears
away from Earth in the constellation Orion, they ALSO experienced
this backwards-through-Time phenomenon, at the SAME rate
of "retrodays" per lightyear. Taylor's ship (along with, ahem, the
ship Brent and his 'Skipper' were in, AND the ship Milo would
eventually find, ALL together with their 'mothership') was 320
lightyears away from Earth on the EARTH-TIME date 11-25-3978 -- a
date which is still registered on the EARTH-TIME chronometer in
Taylor's damaged ship (remember the cracked glass in Stewart's
hibernation chamber? SOMETHING had happened to mess up that one
ship...).
But the ACTUAL date -- in EARTH-TIME -- when Taylor landed was some
time in the year 3955. At the rate Virdon's ship went back-in-Time,
Taylor's ship would cover 320 lightyears in just over
8479 "retrodays". Divide that number by 365.25 and you get about
23.2 "retroyears". Subtract 23.2 from 3978.9 (noon of November 25th
is nine-tenths of the way through a 365-day year), and you get 3955.7
or so. That puts you smack dab into the summer of 3955. Taylor's
EARTH-TIME clock fails to adjust to this back-through-Time jump for
some reason, but all the other EARTH-TIME clocks DO adjust to it:
Brent sees it just prior to re-entry, and it is the reading on
the "date meter" (as Hasslein calls it, when he asks Zira what it
read BEFORE the bright light and the tornado-in-the-sky) just prior
to the time-travelling of the Ape-onauts.
So, then, Virdon's ship goes back-through-Time from July 14th, 3085
to March 21st, 3085 -- the last date being the day they landed near
Chalo. They see this date (3-21-3085) the NEXT day, when Farrow
leads 'em to the ship. But why is "yesterday's" date still on the
clock? Why don't I say that they must have landed on March 20th,
instead?
Because -- at the end of the episode, which takes place "a week"
after the three became fugitives, when the astronauts sprung Galen
from jail, Virdon's trying to pry open the little hatch on the
console where the precious Disc is... and the EARTH-TIME clock is
STILL reading "3-21-3085"! When Prefect Veska's gorillas smashed up
the interior of the ship, they must have broken the mechanism that
caused the clock to click ahead day after day after day... so that
the LAST date it would ever record was still "frozen" in place, so
that Virdon would see it the day AFTER they landed as well as over a
week later. When did the gorillas smash up the ship's cockpit? Farrow
leads Virdon and Burke back to the ship "in the morning" of the day
after they landed, right? And when they get to it, there's ONE
gorilla there, guarding it. He ain't smashin' anything with his rifle
butt, he's just guarding the vehicle. That means that Veska's
gorillas -- in addition to burying Jones, as he ordered -- must have
smashed up the cockpit the day before, later in the day the ship
landed: i.e. on 3-21-3085.
Now, this is just my way of thinking through the evidence. Nobody has
to agree with me if they don't want to. But I think it makes a lot of
sense.
Or is that "alot"? Naaaaa...
Patrick
P.S. Thanks, Cougar, for having sent me that "Urko wall map" pic
almost a year ago. I've put it up as the header pic on my POTA
Phenomenon group, and I wanted to thank both you and "John O." who
Kassidy says spliced the images together. Top notch! Top notch! <.html

Here's a suggestion. Why not get permission from the writer who wrote "Salvage" and put that into comic form. I'm sure Neil would be interested in drawing that.

Dario, the only problem is that Neil certainly DOES have to do

Maybe we'll ahve 8 or so 22 page comiics ready when we start

Not that anyone wants to hear MY opinion about POTA comics, but...
I think it's nice that so many of you guys have formed such strong opinions
about how you think Neil shouldn't alter his drawing style, but I think you
should also remember that he IS the guy who actually made BtB work VISUALLY
in the first place.
I know from experience from being an artist myself what he means when he
points out some of the things about his drawing style that may have slowed
him down during his first crack (presumably...) at a full scale Apes strip.
Some artists do tend to make their work a bit "busy" in the beginning,
whether they mean to or not (though I don't think that that detracted from
his work on BtB in any substantial way). I just think he knows exactly what
he's doing (he has proved that) and I think his criticism of his own work
shows that he has learned a great deal from doing BtB and now has a much
better feeling for what he did right, what he may have done wrong and want
he could improve on in future comics. That is not a bad thing, folks. It's
a very good thing!
Again, I think it's touching that you guys feel so strongly about him not
DRASTICALLY changing his style but I never got the idea from ANY of his
posts that he was DRASTICALLY changing anything. Again, I think he has
learned a great deal from his hard work on BtB and now has a much better
handle on how to "STREAMLINE" his work. That's all, I think, that he's
saying. So instead of boycotting Star Trek II (and issuing death threats to
Leonard NImoy, for God's sake!) because you heard a nasty rumor that Spock
was going to die in the upcoming movie, I think everybody should back off a
little and give him a chance to show this new style he's proposing. If BtB
(the trial run) turned out as good as it did, I'll bet that his next effort
will be even better! That is... IF... he is given the artistic freedom and
SUPPORT that he has PROVEN that he deserves.
Also remember that it is very hard to hit the ground running, no matter how
talented one may be. There is a learning curve involved for everyone,
whether we like it or not. My guess, Whitty, is that after the workout that
BtB gave Neil, that he will get quicker and even better in future efforts.
That only stands to reason and also remember that BtB itself shows how
Neil's visual style improved dramatically with each new chapter. Almost
everyone who wrote in with positive comments shared that opinion. Page one
of BtB is good, but each succeeding page after that got better and better...
until the last few pages, which were outstanding. That should tell you
something.
My humble opininon... of course.

Neil sometimes teases me by saying he did the last chapter in ANIME style or

But artistic freedom - NEVER! Neil needs to be DOMINATED! Now Neil, I know

That's how you get results in BTB, NOT making tea and being nice.
NEIL, I CAN STILL HEAR YOU READING!
That's better. ;)
Oh, by the way.....you should see the 7 new pages!
We have didvided BTB into 2 parts.
Part 1 is the same except for a new "splash" page and the last page in that
part is the discovery of Brent's ship - that was totally unintended but WHAT

There is also a "splash" page for Part 2 but there are also 5 BRAND NEW

The fact that the on-board readout showed a slightly earlier date was

Matt Stein (we met Jerry Goldsmith together). They did some shows and Bill

Fascinating... absolutely fascinating. The description even says that "They
perform in a wild frenzy, often including people in ape garb from the old
movie series on-stage with them." My favorite titles from some of their
songs are "Ursus' Helmet," "We Want Guns" and "Kung Fu Grip." Being a G.I.
Joe collector as well as an Apes fan, I can really relate to the last one.

I doubt that we would have "heard about it"... After all, there was no real
continuity in the live action series, which is/was too bad... (RETURN, with
all it's faults, had real continuity... Too bad the live show didn't...) We
heard nothing about what happened in previous episodes from week to week, or
events of earlier episodes weren't brought up in later ones (with the exception
of "The Gladiators" and "The Horse-Race.) They went into immediate
production, so I'm guessing they didn't have a real "writer's guide" to work from, and
that the scripts were just used as they were made available. So hearing about
anything is highly doubtful...
Anyway, it probably would have shown up in later shows, as a plot device.
But, since there were no "later episodes" after the 14, you'd have to guess that
unless Burke/Galen were holding it at the time of "The Legacy", it's gone...
They stripped Virdon of all his possessions when he was captured, and you'd
have to guess that the disc was among them... (Unless you want to get your
imaginations going and pretending it fell out of his pocket when he
tripped/twisted his ankle, or when he was being dragged along on the way to the castle.
If it fell out of his pocket, you could think that Galen/Burke picked it up
if they followed his path while searching for him.)

My memory is that the LAST we heard of the disc it was MISSING (or at LEAST
assumed to be missing). So I was looking forward to a future episode where
they try to RECOVER the disc.

Anyway, it probably would have shown up in later shows, as a plot device.
But, since there were no "later episodes" after the 14, you'd have to guess
that
unless Burke/Galen were holding it at the time of "The Legacy", it's gone...
They stripped Virdon of all his possessions when he was captured, and you'd
have to guess that the disc was among them... (Unless you want to get your
imaginations going and pretending it fell out of his pocket when he
tripped/twisted his ankle, or when he was being dragged along on the way to
the castle.
If it fell out of his pocket, you could think that Galen/Burke picked it up
if they followed his path while searching for him.)

I gotta say... I've been following this thread with some interest, but the
VERY strong differences of opinion that have resulted from this topic are
incredible given the fact that it's fairly obvious that the writers of the
various Apes episodes didn't even compare notes or try too hard for much
story continuity.
However... this last opinion of Jeff's is the best I've heard so far. So,
if you're a proponent of the idea that the disc was too important to Virdon
to entrust to Galen's care, then it makes absolutely perfect sense that the
gorillas didn't give Virdon a "body cavity search" when they captured him.
And besides... that's a disgusting thought anyway....

Oh come on! We're talking about a show that was canceled after only 14
episodes! If it had lasted, the disc might have been a major part of the
plot of a cliffhanger season ending. That would have been cool anyway! I'd
much rather see more episodes of the continuing saga of Virdon, Burke and
Galen than a final wrap up of the story.

Marvel in the '70's or Adventure in the '90's. The "Adventures on the POTA"
reprints were "colorized", and of course the POTA2001 comics were in color
(not that that helped sales). I prefer b & w too. The comic book market is
geared to color now, just as movies are. Phooey! - - - Jeff

I think we would have. Nothing happens in a series that the writers
don't want to happen, and vice versa. Had they wanted the disc to be
confiscated in a body search or lost in some other fashion, the
audience would have been told as much.
Writers seldom give up a ready plot device without a dramatic payoff,
especially one that had proven so valuable early on. And to suddenly
in a later episode have the characters attempt to recover a disc we
were never told was missing in the first place would have been very,
very bad storytelling indeed.
Hence, they still had the disc at the end of the last filmed episode.
Whether Virdon or Burke or Galen was in possession of it, or whether
it was safely buried in a hole somewhere, or whatever, is irrelevant.
Just my opinion, speaking as a writer.

Does anyone here know where the inspiration came from to have the
Apes dressed in color-coded costumes? That is such a huge part of
the POTA feel. It would be interesting to know where the idea came
from -- and why. Maybe Joe Russo talks about it in his book, but I
don't remember reading about it.

die during the episode). In POTA, the Apes already (I assume) knew
what species they were, and the uniforms were definitely color-coded
according to species. The glyphs (maybe) defined rank.
It just seems like a funny decision to make concerning costumes.
But, it was definitely a good decision, because it is such a major
POTA identifier.
