Hmmm... naming your son after a woman you'd like to... ahem... well, you
get my drift... might result in some psychological issues down the line,

.htmlI understand this is somewhat Off Topic, but it does relate to the
use of animals in the movies. I thought it was an interesting idea.
As you will read at the end of the release, American Humane is the
only organization devoted to protecting both children and animals.
An interesting thought.

NEW AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION WEBSITE TELLS MOVIEGOERS WHETHER "NO
ANIMALS WERE HARMED"
DENVER, Aug. 6, 2004 The American Humane Association today
announced the launch of a new website the national organization hopes
will become a favorite on web browsers in households across the
country. The website, found at www.americanhumane.org/film, is a must-
see for animal lovers and movie aficionados who want to verify no
animals were harmed in the making of their favorite movies.
"It is important for moviegoers to visit American Humane's website
before they go to the theatre so they can make informed viewing
decisions. By refusing to attend productions that fail to ensure the
safety of animals, consumers can send a powerful message," says Marie
Belew Wheatley, American Humane's president and CEO.
The 127-year-old nonprofit is the only national organization
dedicated to protecting both children and animals, but is better
known for the famous "No Animals Were Harmed. . . " End Credit
Disclaimer seen during the final credits of film productions. Since
1940, American Humane's Film & Television Unit has had the sole
responsibility for monitoring the safety and protection of animals in
film.
"It is American Humane's job to ensure that no deliberate cruelty
occurs while animals are on the set of films and to prevent
situations that might cause accidental harm," says Belew Wheatley.
The new website features reviews of recently released movies and has
an extensive database of older movies. For the launch of the site,
American Humane has revised its rating system to help consumers
easily identify movies that have complied with the organization's
strict Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media. The
rating system groups movies into one of four categories:
Monitored - Acceptable An American Humane Animal Safety
Representative was present and no animals were harmed, earning the
film the coveted End Credit Disclaimer "No Animals Were Harmed
".
Monitored - Unacceptable Cruel or negligent practices
occurred during filming. An animal was harmed or became ill during
production.
Not Monitored - Met Production Expectations Limited
resources and/or scheduling conflicts prevented American Humane's
Film & Television Unit from being on set to monitor this film.
However, the production team did comply with all American Humane
notification, documentation, and pre-release screening requirements.
Not Monitored - American Humane's Film & Television Unit was
not contacted regarding animal action, did not monitor the animal
action during production and was unable to obtain documentation which
substantiated production claims regarding the humane treatment of
animal actors.
The new site also includes a section dedicated to former shelter
animals turned stars. Some of the animals showcased are "Fang"
from "Harry Potter", "Scooter" from "Mike's Super Short Show", "Max"
from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", and "Morris" the cat.
About the American Humane Association
Founded in 1877, the American Humane Association is the nation's only
organization dedicated to protecting both children and animals.
Through a network of child and animal welfare and protection agencies
and individuals, American Humane develops policies, legislation,
curriculum, and trainings to protect children and animals from abuse,
neglect, and exploitation. The nonprofit membership organization,
headquartered in Denver, raises awareness about The Link® between
animal abuse and other forms of violence, as well as the benefits
derived from the human and animal bond. American Humane's regional
office in Los Angeles is the authority behind the "No Animals Were
Harmed
" End Credit Disclaimer on TV and film productions, and
American Humane's office in Washington, DC, is an advocate for child-
and animal-friendly legislation at the state and federal levels.

What, then, is the last MENTION of the disc? Wasn't it LOST in a scuffle?

It was last mentioned in "The Gladiators", in which it's lost in the

Dalton...

Virdon is wearing the same clothes he always does (I think?) after he is
"searched". They found the picture but they may not be that great at
searching. Or maybe they found the disc but didn't think it was important
and left it. Or maybe Virdon lost the disc before that. But "The Legacy"
doesn't show them saying, "A disc! We found a disc!". So we have to assume
they missed it.
Nor do they show any Apes saying "A picture, look Zaius, we found a
picture." But, they did find the family picture, and you can guess they'd not
overlook anything that looks as suspicious/curiosity as that disc. I'm sure they
were under strict orders to collect all personal item found on Virdon, and that
would include the photo and the disc. The Gorillas aren't as dumb as some
make them out to be, they wouldn't miss it.

My Juno e-mail program crashed last week so I'm sorry if I'm a little

ESCAPE soundtrack and music from both TV series). At this point, I'd like
to request that no one bombard them with e-mails; rather let me get in

|
.html To me, the movie costume colors have never been much of a puzzle at all.
Artists do the production work on movies and television and they tend to
make very artistic choices... naturally.
Basically, the colors used in Star Trek (the original series) were primary
colors (yellow, red and blue) on the color wheel. They are the basic source
for all other colors so they are a natural choice. The colors used for the
Apes costumes are secondary colors (orange, purple and green) on the color
wheel. I don't think any particular color scheme was more popular than any
other in the sixties and seventies, but rather, bold use of pure colors was
in style during that period. Take for example, the whole hoky Brady Bunch
look. Technicolor was still pretty new back then and I believe many
newscasts were still being broadcast in black and white in the sixties, so
eye catching, bold splashes of color were in. Primary colors were even used
on Gilligan's island and that show, for example started in black and white.
It's fun to speculate about why they used secondary colors for the apes
costumes, but I think it's only because orange, purple and green are more
muted colors than yellow, red and blue and would look more realistic in the
film. Nowadays, the whole "in" thing with color in films is black, which
probably started with the films of Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien, etc.)
and has now been imitated to death, starting with the original Batman film
and The Crow. Even Star Trek uniforms have gotten darker.

That darn comic test page again, huh? I've been meaning to get to that, but
I just don't have much free time to do artwork these days. And quite
frankly, I don't see how Neil had the time if he was working a full time job
while doing BtB. That's yet another reason for me to be impressed with his
work.
I am working on an Apes project, but on my current schedule, I only seem to
have one day a week to do my own thing at home so it may be a while before I
can show you anything. I have other artwork that I can scan but it's not
Apes related so I'd rather wait. Right now, I am retouching an old
photograph, which is something I'm asked to do from time to time.
I really meant what I said about the Arthur P. Jacobs comparison. You seem

the use of color during that time was very striking. Is there anyone
here who remembers avacado, harvest gold, and plum colors used in
decorating? (Avacado kitchens?)
I'm thinking the colors of the Apes costumes mirrored those muted
colors in the India clothes of the times. And leather! There was a
VERY cool leather and India shop across town from where I lived while
growing up. They did a thriving business during that time!
Definitely these colors would look more "natural" on the Apes.
Something is missing from my leather and India theory, though.
Silver. To complete the look, the Apes would need some silver.
Anyway, I still need to watch the Behind video to hear their take on
the costumes.
Thanks for the colorful thoughts, Will. I expect there is something
to what you are saying.

.htmlActually, Nova is also a guy's name. Here is what I found about the
male version of the name Nova:
Description of Your First Name of: Nova
Although the name Nova creates an interest in the deeper aspects of
life, we emphasize that it limits self-expression and friendly
congeniality with a moody disposition. This name, when combined with
the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as
well as cause health weaknesses in the heart, lungs and bronchial
area.
The name of Nova gives you a clever, quick, analytical mind, but you
suffer with a great deal of self-consciousness, lack of confidence,
and much aloneness because of misunderstandings. Your idealistic and
sensitive nature gives you a deep appreciation for the finer things
of life and a strong desire to be of service to humanity. There are
times when you experience inner turbulence at your inability to say
what you mean. It is far easier for you to express your deeper
thoughts and feelings through writing than verbally. You find
pleasure in literature, in poetry, and in your ideals and will turn
to them when you feel you have been misunderstood.
(There's more, but I would have to pay $15.00 to get it! -- NOT!!)
So, there you are fellas. It's a perfectly respectable name as far
as names go.

well) and they have the same articles/photos sections as the US

The ones I have are from 1978 and 1982. The '78 one has a No1 on the

higher price. I don't know if there were any others released, these

Mike, since you don't get the SciFi channel down under, you'll just have
to
work out the time differences and play your DVDs so you can be in sync
with
the rest of us. Remember to pause every 15 minutes or so for commercial
breaks.

You will see that the covers are pretty much the same as the US #1
but the background colour is purple rather than blue.
Also as I think I said before, there are no adverts or

2003 have been deleted from the main site and can now be found in
the files section of the Archives as a text file:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
For those of you who are new to the group, we have to do this
periodically to free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to
the groups anymore. As this group is so active we tend to fill up
very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep
a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups to store
excess stuff on.
One important point - to access the old posts etc. you will need to
be a member of the Archives group. As we have recently had
to 'revamp' the group it will be necessary for all of those who were
previously members of the Archives to also (re)join.
The same is also true for the Fan Fiction and Photos groups:

I think we would have. Nothing happens in a series that the writers
don't want to happen, and vice versa. Had they wanted the disc to be
confiscated in a body search or lost in some other fashion, the
audience would have been told as much.
Writers seldom give up a ready plot device without a dramatic payoff,
especially one that had proven so valuable early on. And to suddenly
in a later episode have the characters attempt to recover a disc we
were never told was missing in the first place would have been very,
very bad storytelling indeed.
Hence, they still had the disc at the end of the last filmed episode.
Whether Virdon or Burke or Galen was in possession of it, or whether
it was safely buried in a hole somewhere, or whatever, is irrelevant.
Just my opinion, speaking as a writer.

recommendation to this fan fiction. It's thoughtful and complicated
and ends up with a lot of action and excitement.
Oh, and I don't care if they did flubb up concerning the disc. In MY

difficult for an artist to just decide to "change his style". Isn't
the way you draw the way you draw?
Or am I missing the point here? I can change my editorial style if
I go from, say, documentaries to pop promos.
Is it really that easy for you?

Summary: Over rated!
I expected much more from this film, after hearing all the hype. I
like science fiction, I never thouht Rod Cerling was that good of a
Sci fie writer. Maybe, it is the age of the film and it does not
shock
today, but in the end I felt dispointed. Heston plays a good role,
and its funny how for bush human's Heston ends up with a very
clean, well dressed, done up female one. Don't bother 4/10

I look at the NTSC 'Evolution' box set and it's got the Statue of

What if you'd never seen this film before?

Still think that full pager of Gideon finding Brent's ship

.htmlSparky - go to the Simian Scrolls issue that told us (in jest) of
the lost TV Episodes. Look at the "lost" artwork by various POTA
artists. They are all done by Neil in a style copying particular
artists.
Similarly when art is work (ie there is a deadline), yes I believe
it would be streamlined and adapted to meet deadines, but when it is
purely for self I agree - the way you draw the way you draw.

Gee, sorry the guy was disointed or dispointed or whatever inn the end, and even more so that he found it odd that bush Heston got a clean female. Even if she was dumb as a post. Whatever.
As far as the Evolution set, there have been complaints for ages that the cover gives the ending away. I think it forked Rory's tongue.

I think it's obvious that the people at Fox who put that together
assumed (possibly correctly so) that the only people who will Apes
stuff have already seen it. That's the most famous image from the
movie, so of course they plaster it everywhere, specifically to catch
the eyes of die-hard fans willing to spend money.

suppose seeing him as a human would have been fun, but I would rather
have seen him as a primitive human like those in Planet. How cool if

From: Alan Maxwell |
Date: 9/2/2004 |
| Subject: Catching up... |
|
.html Right, I had a bit of a disaster with my PC and have only been online
briefly over the last two or three weeks. I have however read all the posts
over that period (switched to digest for the duration and I now sympathise
even more with people who try to read these messages that endlessly quote
other posts) and thought I would catch up with my responses here.
So, my observations from the last few weeks, group politics not included:
1) PotA #1 (Adventure) was definitely only released in three colours.
2) I am the source for the confusion over the limited editions of Ape Nation
number one. The reason for this is that the UK Comic Book Price Guide
(which, alas, hasn't seen a new edition since 97/98 I think) listed the
"normal" limited edition but also listed two others. There weren't much
details except that they were limited in differing numbers.
3) That Spanish book... yes, I will try to scan the cover shortly, although
I haven't actually re-installed my scanner yet since my aforementioned PC
hiccup. You will probably be able to find a pic on the internet somewhere
anyway.
4) Soundtracks - I believe that there only slightly more than NO chance of
FSM doing Escape from the PotA so I would be inclined not to waste energies
on that. I do however think the TV series is a possibility. While the Apes
discs have not sold out they have been among the more popular FSM discs; it
was said at the time that FSM might look into a TV series release if the
demand was there; and now look, they've even released the soundtrack to the
Logan's Run TV series. And as someone else has pointed out, it was not all
Lalo's music - he scored a few but there were a couple of other composers
too. Certainly more than enough for a CD.
5) I believe the cartoon music, cool though it is, is also highly unlikely
other than perhaps the main title as an extra on a TV soundtrack disc, but
it would be nice. A lot of old cartoons could prove troublesome from a
licencing perspective though.
6) Regarding Mark's point about the TV series soundtracks being in mono - I
really don't think that's much of an issue. The original soundtrack is the
original soundtrack and I think people would be more concerned with the
sound quality than if it is stereo or not. The cost and hassle of
stereoising it could prove prohibitive for such a limited appeal release
anyway (didn't Fox avoid doing the same with the TV series DVD set as it
would cost about 10K per episode or something like that?).
7) Regarding Chris's mention on the FSM disc - I too had contact with Lukas
Kendall, of a different sort. I was reviewing the BENEATH disc for SCROLLS
and he was kind enough to answer a barrage of questions about it which
padded out my fairly bland review with a lot of really fascinating
information. It was refreshing to talk to someone who worked on something
like this recently so it was all still fresh in his mind - speaking to folks
who worked on Apes back in its heyday can often be a case of lots of answers
like "I can't remember".
8) The anthology comic series that Rob/Ron was trying to remember the name
of that featured a story about a man on a world not unlike the PotA was
actually DC Comics' STRANGE ADVENTURES. The story predates even Boulle's
novel, and if I remember correctly (unable to check due to, you've guessed
it, my file being lost during my computer crash) I think I've managed to
squeeze one panel from it into the next issue of SCROLLS (out soon!).
9) Medicom variant figures - I can't help it, and I apologise for bringing
the conversation down to my level, but every time I hear the phrase "brown
Cornelius" I think it sounds like a slang term for the after-effects of a
really strong curry.
10) EMPIRE magazine in the UK recently devoted one of their "Top Ten"
articles to the top ten movie gags in The Simpsons. PotA references featured
twice - that one's just for Cougar.
11) And this month it's the spoiler-laden top ten movie plot twists, and of
course our favourite movie ending is included. At least Empire included a
big spoiler warning on the article, unlike Fox's video cover.
12) Terry - I noticed my name on your list. My email address is as per this
post and my mailing address has not changed either.
13) Don't know if Mark's poll is still going or not, as I'm typing this
offline - but I was born in 1977. That should skew the stats a little bit.
14) The documentary on Sky One (not Sci-Fi) in the UK next week... I
wouldn't get too excited. My prediction is as follows:
It will be the usual clip-show format and will contain, along with very
brief snippets from people who actually matter, lots of British Z-grade
celebrities making light of all the legendary moments (my prediction will be
that the whiny-voiced guy who presents movie stuff on UK MTV will be one of
them) and make a lot of not-very-funny observations that they think are
hilarious. And probably at least one person will drag out the annoying and
nonsensical old pish about how the apes spoke English so it must have been
Earth. And of course this is yet another excuse to spoil it for anyone who
has never seen it.
15) Loved BTB. The art reminded me a lot more of John Bolton's UK apes stuff
than the Marvel US stuff. Very enjoyable.
I think that's all I have to say at the moment.

.htmlHello to all newbies and strangers!
I'm interested in POTA fan demographics. This poll will only be valid
IF most people respond and IF those who respond don't lie!! If we get
a fair number of responses, I will follow with another question. Your
answers will be completely private. No names will be associated with
any answer. Here is my first question: What year were you born?
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/polls This poll ends on
September 6.
I notice that the MOST responses we have ever had to a poll (where
only one answer is allowed) is 32. So far we have 21 responses to
the birth year poll, which is probably better than I expected. How
about those of you who don't EVER post? You can answer this question
without anyone knowing who you are. No one will call or send
annoying mail to your home or inbox. It won't cost you more than the
few seconds you spend entering a response. (While you are there,
there is another poll about POTA merchandise that you might enjoy
answering.)
And, while you're online and in the groups neighborhood, how about
typing in a little note telling us who you are and what brought you
to the DG. http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/post
Hope to hear from all you newbies and strangers!
