Michael!

Just had to drop you a note to thank you for posting the above link. I have
every one of the Medicom figures already, including all the variations
(which, if I'm not mistaken, makes 22 different figures - even though only
19 are listed on the back of the Medicom cards), but I have always wanted to
complete a second set. Thanks to your thoughtful post, I am three figures
closer to that goal.

I already had two lawgivers but I'd been looking around for a second Milo
and Cornelius asronauts and a second General Aldo and I can't believe that
they were only $2.99 each! One of them, Milo or Cornelius (I'd have to
check to make sure which) was only $.99!

Whitty... YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

Yeah, if you keep watcjing you will SURELY find more at reasonable
(ridiculous!) prices.

I don't know if it makes me happy or sad.....but if Sideshow decided to do
it too, one must ASSUME these Medicoms WERE successful.

Hey Michael, do me a favor and PLEASE help me "keep watcjing!" I only need
nine more figures to make a complete set of two each! And man, do I LOVE a
good bargain!

I was living in Taiwan (at the end of the Japanese island chain) when the
Medicoms first came out so I was able to get them for around $20 or less
each when they were going for $40 or more on eBay. I did pay $34.99 for one
of the two rare variant dark Cornelius' I have though, but I believe that's
the most I ever spent on any one of them. I also shelled out $32.95 for one
of the two rare variant Ceasar Land's Apes I have. I actually have three
Ceasar Land's Apes but the one I'm talking about is the special Ceasar
version, not the gorilla in the orange/red jumpsuit. I'm looking for a
second gorilla in jumpsuit Ceasar Land's Ape as well though.

So keep an eye out, man!

Will

P.S.- Hope we can all start a running post about the Medicoms. I box them
up and don't see them for long periods of time, but I always come back to
them and still get a huge kick out of them. A fellow apes fan once
complained though that the figure's bodies were kind of truncated and out of
proportion, but even if that's true, it doesn't bother me much at all.

I just wish they'd made more different characters from the films and T.V.
series. No set is complete without Virdon, Burke, Galen, a few Beneath
mutants, Brent, Armando, Governor Breck, Kolp, Lisa, young Cornelius and
Virgil. I could go on, but I think everyone gets the idea and I would be
reasonably satisfied if they made just the ones I've mentioned.

*** There's an episode of "THE SIMPSONS" where Rev. Lovejoy helps
save Bart & Lisa (I think) from some nasty baboons while on some kind
of rollercoaster; the next scene shows the exterior of the church he
preaches at, and the sign outside says "CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE
APES" -- and he gives what Bart calls the "coolest" sermon ever,
recounting the nail-biting adventure saving the kids from the apes. I
don't remember the episode name, but it was hilarious.

Speaking of 'hilarious', I can't wait to see the new supermarionation
flick "TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE" -- by the makers of "SOUTH PARK".
Those guys are THE best satirists around, I think. As much as I love
the Simpsons, "South Park" is just a tad better at satire. The
Chinese characters for "satire" -- according to L. R. Hubbard, in his
preface to the 10-volume "MISSION EARTH" series -- translate
literally as "laughter with knives"... and "South Park" has a way of
making me laugh out loud AND slicing & dicing anything and everything
worthy of satire. Their "PASSION OF THE JEW" DVD is out now, with
their hilariously vicious take on Mel Gibson's controversial box
office hit. "PLANET OF THE APES" is usually categorized as 'Science
Fiction', but the original novel -- and, at least, the first two
movies -- were all predominantly Satires. But, there ain't
no 'Satire' section in the video rental stores...

Subject: Re: the disc
.html
*** I don't think I've ever disputed that point (i.e. that Virdon has
a pocket or pockets). Doesn't he realize the Disc is missing, in "THE
GLADIATORS" after their fight with Tolar and Dalton, when he reaches
into his pocket and doesn't find it there? My point, then, would be
that keeping the Disc in his pocket ain't safe enough for him, from
that point on -- if he could lose it so easily during a fight, with
it just falling out of his pants pocket, then wouldn't he try to
figure out a BETTER place to keep the Disc, so that it WOULDN'T be
lost so easily in the future?

What are his options? He can keep it in a little bag, along with his
compass, etc. He could make a necklace out of it, and wear it around
his neck, with a string through the disc's 'donut'-hole center. He
could sew it into the lining of his clothing -- maybe, even, his
knickers, so that he DOES have it on him when he's out fishing for
Hurton in "TOMORROW'S TIDE".

Or, perhaps (and ONLY just 'perhaps'), he might feel that the safest
one to carry the item would be Galen, tucked into a pocket of his
professionally-made chimp clothing, rather than in his own ragged
clothing "fit for humans".

I ain't claiming or insisting that Galen MUST be the one carrying it;
I'm just tryin' to figure out a way to have Virdon be in possession
of it after all 14 episodes are over. It's a "continuity" problem,
or -- as they say regarding evidence in a trial, a concern regarding
the "chain of evidence" (like OJ's bloody glove): WHERE, exactly, is
the Disc at every single moment during their 13 adventures following
the TV pilot? Even if the disc isn't mentioned in an episode (say,
in "THE LIBERATOR", for instance)... DURING that episode, where is
the disc's most likely location? This is only really a problem for
TWO episodes, in my opinion (off the top of my head) -- "THE LEGACY",
where Virdon is captured and the Photograph is confiscated (so, why
not the Disc, too?); and "TOMORROW'S TIDE", where the astronauts lose
most of their week-to-week clothing, which they're NOT going back
for, since they fled (by sea) from Hurton's fishing village. One
could also wonder about the Disc's location at the end of "THE
SURGEON", where Virdon is undressed during his surgery, and the disc
must be either with his clothing in a pile somewhere, OR either Burke
or Galen is holding on to it for him while he recuperates.

Other fans, for the purposes of their own TV fanfic, might choose to
have Virdon either lose the Disc or purposely throw it away (along
with his hopes of ever using it to get back to the Past to his wife
and son) -- and that's fine, for them. For MY project, I want to be
able to establish a "chain of evidence" or custody, throughout ALL
the episodes, so that Virdon has the Disc on him when MY "last"
episode/adventure takes place. And the "chain of evidence" I want to
establish SHOULD be logical, reasonable, and should take into account
the details established on-screen in the 13 "sequel" episodes (after
the pilot).

A while back -- it was probably on Mez's "Friends & Fugitives" Yahoo
site -- there was some chat about the changes in costume that Burke
and Virdon have, from episode-to-episode. It'd be interesting to
compare "first" and "last" images of the three fugitives for all the
episodes, beginning with the last image from "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW",
and comparing the costumes to see if there are any major continuity
problems when the episodes are put into their standard "aired" order.
Doesn't Burke wear a lighter-colored 'vest'-type thing in some
episodes, but not ALL episodes, in addition to his blue-colored
shirt? Does he put his vest-thing in his backpack once in a while,
perhaps when it gets warmer outside? If their duds are gone at the
end of "TOMORROW'S TIDE", does that mean that "TOMORROW'S TIDE"
should be considered the 14th episode, predating "UP ABOVE THE WORLD
SO HIGH" (which was the last AIRED episode)?

I'm endeavoring to re-order the episodes, so that these continuity
issues will make better sense. For example, a cluster of episodes
take place near the Sea (where Urko says they're heading, when he
points out to Jason, in "THE GLADIATORS", the places the fugitives
were sighted) -- "THE DECEPTION", "TOMORROW'S TIDE", "UP ABOVE THE
WORLD SO HIGH", and (perhaps) "THE LEGACY" and "THE TRAP", since
those two episodes take place in Oakland and San Francisco,
respectively, which are in the "Bay Area" (though we don't actually
SEE the Sea in those episodes). Should the "sea"-episodes be grouped
together, perhaps?

Another thing: in "THE LEGACY", there's a line of dialogue where
Burke or Virdon tells Galen about gladiatorial-type fighting;
shouldn't such a line predate the events of the episode "THE
GLADIATORS", since it would be natural for them to reference Barlow's
gladiatorial fights in a LATER discussion about the topic?

The "official" order of the episodes is really only the "aired"
order. We all know that "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW" must be the 1st
episode, and that "THE GLADIATORS" must predate "THE HORSE RACE"
(since Barlow, in the latter, wants to go BACK to Kaymak, where he
was Prefect in the former). But the LOGICAL order of the episodes is
still up for question, I think. Whether I like it or not, I have to
put 'em in an order that makes the MOST sense of ALL the evidence at
hand.

If anybody here has any thoughts about this, perhaps some comparisons
of Virdon/Burke clothing from episode-to-episode (that sort of
thing), I'd be glad to hear it.

Keep on Apein'

I think was issue #9 as it featured the ORIGINAL BOB LARKIN art for that issue which marvel editors changed GROSSLY for the real American edition. If you haven't already, also seek out the British POTA reprints for stuff like marvel's Killraven being altered by drawing apes over the martians! This is usually listed as Planet of the Apes Weekly.

Hey I never noticed this before! I just checked it out and it is
changed.
The US version of the cover art (#7) is minus a gun held up by the
gorilla on the left and they have removed the rocks behind the
Statue of Liberty and darkend the sky!

I will scan the Aussie cover and put it in the Comic cover folder in

*** There's an episode of "THE SIMPSONS" where Rev. Lovejoy helps
save Bart & Lisa (I think) from some nasty baboons while on some kind
of rollercoaster; the next scene shows the exterior of the church he
preaches at, and the sign outside says "CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE
APES" -- and he gives what Bart calls the "coolest" sermon ever,
recounting the nail-biting adventure saving the kids from the apes. I
don't remember the episode name, but it was hilarious.

Is that supposed to be proof??

You know, that's kind of my feeling about this subject too. Now that
Roddy's gone, everyone seems to be rather obsessed with the idea that he was
actually gay. Don't get me wrong though. It would be interesting to know
for sure, but for me personally, I really don't care if he was gay or not.
It means nothing to me either way. He was and always will be, a wonderful
man who, even though I never knew him personally, brightened my life in
inumerable ways when I was a child. But even now that I'm all "grown up,"
the work that he did lives on and on.

Roddy was a special guy. Sure, he was never the John Wayne or Chuck Heston
type, but he was a towering figure in his own right and I think that's all
that matters. I also think that even if he was gay, the fact that he never
actually "came out of the closet" in public should count for something. If
he never came out, it may not have been because he was afraid it would ruin
his career. He simply might not have thought that it was important and that
his sexual orientation was not the true measure of the man he was.

So, I'm not going to remember him as Roddy the gay actor. I'm going to
remember him as Roddy the brilliant actor and special person who did so much
to make Planet of the Apes come alive for me and so many others. Anything
less would simply trivialize the man. May his memory live on forever...
whether he was gay or not.

Will

Yes, I have Alan's retouched cover files safely on my had drive a well as a backup disk. While I resized them for the final printed covers, I kept the original files he sent me just in case there was something else we were able to do with them later.

Actually, yes, I lost all of them - but the good news is that I hadn't done
any more work on them when it happened so everything I have done is safely
in Greg's hands.

Dave - can you send me those covers again please? (#4 onwards I think)
Thanks.

*** The "High Council" was the governing body of Apedom in the POTA
TV show; I don't think they ever mention any "High Council" in
either "PLANET" or "BENEATH". We don't even know what type of
government the Apes have in those two movies -- with the exception of
there being "Ministries" (i.e. Zaius being the "Minister of Science"
and Maximus being the "Minister of Animal Affairs", etc-- or was
that "Commissioner for Animal Affairs"? I'll have to check...), which
sounds sorta like the Brit system.

In the TV show, Zaius mentions (in "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW") to the
astronauts that "Very few know your history... very few will EVER
know... Your Science, your Cities -- We don't want them! We don't
even want their MEMORY!"

When I hear "very few", it sounds to me as if this is a reference to
some sort of simian secret society which perpetuates the knowledge
amongst a privileged Elite that Man once dominated the world
(including the pre-intelligent Apes) prior to destroying his own
civilization; and, they foster the belief in a falsified history
that "Apes have ALWAYS ruled the world! ALWAYS!!!" [Galen's outraged
line to Burke & Virdon after their initial capture].

I see the movie Zaius as a lineal descendant of his ancestor from the
TV show era; thus, membership in this exclusive club of "Guardians of
the Terrible Secret" would be -- in part -- hereditary.

Isn't President Bush -- like HIS father before him -- a member of the
exclusive "Skull-n-Bones" secret society? Sure he is! And so is John
Kerry. Hmmm...

Back to POTA.

As for whether or not the TV era "High Council" in its entirety knows
the Terrible Secret [and not just Zaius], that's another question.
How many members are on the High Council? If the entire Council is
present in the scene where Virdon and Burke are brought before it,
does that mean that there's only ONE gorilla (Urko) on it? Are there
equal numbers of Chimps, Orangs, and Gorillas (i.e. multiples of 3),
and if not, does that mean that there is under-representation of,
say, the Gorilla faction or the Chimp faction?

The TV show's politics fascinates me in one particular regard. Galen
becomes the first Ape murderer (Urko charged him with "murder of my
lieutenant" in the pilot episode) in who knows HOW long, and he's
gone off and become a fugitive -- having befriended two feared and
hated HUMANS, for cryin' out loud... and THEN, soon afterwards, his
FATHER Yalu becomes a member of the High Council! Is membership in
the Council conferred by a retiring predecessor, perhaps? Say, a
lineal ancestor? In other words, was Galen's GRANDFATHER a Council
member, and then when he decided to retire he handed over the
trappings of his office to his son, Yalu? Or, do the Chimps -- or,
those allowed to vote -- get to choose their representatives of the
Chimp faction to the High Council? How could the father of a
murdering Human-lover get elected to the High Council, unless enough
of the Chimp faction was sympathetic to Galen and to the "inhumane"
or "unsimian" treatment of Humans? Or, did Yalu inherit his
membership in the High Council, and is that an albatross around his
neck -- with the majority, perhaps, of the Chimp faction not at ALL
happy that one of the few Chimps on the Council has a murdering human-
lover for a son?

And... what was Yalu's relationship with Zaius? Galen responds to
Zaius' question -- Why should I make you my personal assistant? -- by
saying "Because my father is a very good friend of yours AND YOU OWE
HIM A FAVOR." What did Yalu do for Zaius that put him in his debt?
Did YALU know about the "Terrible Secret"? Did Urko? In "THE TRAP",
Urko tells Burke that he knew there was something before the Ape
civilization now running things in 3085, but he insisted that Apes
were a part of it -- and Burke, to save his skin, has to pretend that
the Apes were the ones who built the ruined city, keeping Humans
around only as pets... and this answer assuages Urko's bloodlust
momentarily. It's what Urko WANTED to hear [he calls this lie "the
truth"], but -- unfortunately for him -- a poster advertizing the San
Francisco Zoo hanging on the BART station wall proves that Man was
the creator of the ruined city, with naked apes behind bars in zoos
for human amusement.

I think that THAT moment, in "THE TRAP", is the moment when Urko
truly KNOWS that Man built the civilization "beyond his
understanding" in the prehistory before Simian history [and, for me
this means that "THE TRAP" must predate "THE LEGACY"]. He had also
seen Farrow's book, which he shows to Zaius as evidence against
Galen, and IN that book there's a picture of a naked pre-intelligent
gorilla (Galen saw this pic earlier in the pilot). But that photo
didn't show the gorilla behind a zoo cage's bars, as did the poster
in the BART station. I think THAT finally convinced Urko of the
horrible truth. Later, in "THE LEGACY", Zaius convinces Urko to
destroy the cache of computers in the Midtown Railway Station --
computers that Urko now KNOWS were built by Humans from long ago,
since a HUMAN 'Scientist' had told them where to find it (the
holographic message left behind at the Oakland Science Institute).

So, all in all, I'd say that ONLY Zaius and other members of an
unnamed Simian Secret Society are "in the know" regarding
the "Terrible Secret" about Man's prior civilization, and NOT the
High Council. Apes like Prefect Barlow may occasionally come across
artifacts from that prehistorical era -- like the golf club, made
from superior steel that the Apes can't replicate -- but they
attribute the making of such artifacts to "the Ancients", whom they
believe to have been Apes.

"Apes have ALWAYS ruled the world! ALWAYS!!!"

Terry, Yahoo no longer displays email attachments unless the group
member receives individual emails. If (like me!) they get the daily
digest, scans will not show up, neither do they show up on the group
so it may be a good idea to upload pictures to the photos or files

Well, I've seen them, and they're different. The UK one has a much lighter
sky and there is also a huge chunk of rock in the sea just of the beach that
reaches right up behind the logo but does not appear to be on the US cover.
Does this sound like the Australian issue's cover? This is interesting.

Subject: Re: if Zaius knew the truth about man along did the other members o
.html
when is the first time in movie or tv show that the words HIGH COUNCIL are used or mentioned ?

what is your assumption about how many ape "cities" there might be across the USA
is Zaius' ape city really important in the scheme of things or is just the one community that the astronauts just happened to find ??

>
> Without a doubt. Ape politics seemed to breed well-kept secrets,

ALWAYS!!!"

Yeah John,

Jeff's a big kidder and he really loves us all (especially ME!).

Something I forgot to mention - we have been UNMODERATED for one month and
there has been no real trouble on the group.

I am pushed to conclude that the big trouble maker might have been
moderating people, not the other way around.

Keep it up (or I'll moderate ya!) - just kidding. ;)

Roddy was a private person, but obviously being gay was a tough thing to be

Well, it's no contest. In POTA vs. "Lord of the Rings", "Rings" won. You
might find it interesting to know that in 1992 Peter Jackson tried to

the POTA script developed by Oliver Stone in 1994 had a definite "Lord of

Yes, I know it doesn't matter, but in a way it DOES. If Brent was written

It sounds like Warner Bros. is buying MGM, which would give them the rights to "The Hobbit", which Jackson is interested in. I think POTA is out of luck with Jackson now.
Brian Peck was a friend of Roddy's, and told me that Jackson and Roddy pitched an idea to Fox. There was no script or anything, just a pitch. I know from my own research that Joe Roth was the head of Fox at that time and wasn't interested in POTA, so that's what killed it. Adam Rifkin was first to try a new POTA in the late '80's. Then Joe Roth became in charge and no Ape projects were given a go until he left in '93. Then Rifkin came back for a short time but lost out to Oliver Stone, then James Cameron, etc. By 1994, POTA was a big deal to Fox, who apparently had their own ideas of what a new POTA should be (they were set in their ways enough to alienate guys like Stone and Cameron). What the hell Fox thought POTA should be isn't clear, except a commercial mess. - - - Jeff

It would have been fascinating to see what Jackson would have done - and it
would also be fascinating to see what he CAN do. If he STILL wants to do
something with POTA, I would say he might get a chance if King Kong is a
success.

Did they ever get a script or even a description of the story for Jackson's
movie?

Well, it's no contest. In POTA vs. "Lord of the Rings", "Rings" won. You
might find it interesting to know that in 1992 Peter Jackson tried to
convince 20th Century Fox to let him make POTA (he was Roddy's choice). And
the POTA script developed by Oliver Stone in 1994 had a definite "Lord of
the Rings" flavor, including a character called Aragorn who is meant to
assume his mantle as the king of mankind. - - - Jeff

Oh, one thing is that Roddy has always maintained that a new POTA shouldn't be a remake but a continuation of the originals. So if he was involved it's probably safe to assume it would've picked up from the originals, with Roddy back in action. But also, if it had happened we wouldn't have had the "Apes" hype of the late '90's, including "Behind the POTA". Certainly POTA has taught us the pitfalls of tampering with time. - - - Jeff

I heard him with his cast on TV the other day (they were in Australia headed

that's why he went hard for it. Don't you think if he is a POTA fan (which
I assume he IS) he would casually say to Fox "I want to do POTA next" and

An enormous money spinner.

The problem is they assumed to be that POTA must be formulaic....they forfot
that 99% of its success came from the fact that it SET the mould, and other
franchises followed.

POTA was the first big original Sci-fi franchise, topped only by Star Wars
when it was HUGE.

It's possible that Dehn played with the idea as an unspoken theme to enliven a rather bland script. When Gore Vidal was hired to rewrite Heston's "Ben Hur", he made Ben gay (Ha! I really don't know if Jackson is an "Apes" fan. I assume he is, why not? In '96 after Oliver Stone was gone, Fox offered Jackson POTA and he turned it down because he had an offer to do "King Kong" (his FAVORITE movie of all time, no question). The plug got pulled on "Kong" (good, because the script sucked) when the competition was doing "Godzilla". Jackson moved onto "Lord of the Rings", found himself some excellent writers, and now "King Kong" might truly rock. A POTA by Jackson today would be a different thing from one in '92. He's learned a lot and honed his team. But now Jackson is king and I doubt he would do a sequel to some one elses's mess. Most A-list directors don't want to do sequels to someone else's movie. And after "King Kong" and "The Hobbit" Jackson will probably have his fill of big movies. - - - Jeff

the key to POTA was it kept the audience off balance, like good science

I personally have NEVER gotten the idea that Brent was gay. In fact, I
thought it was just a joke with you guys because he never actually hit on
Nova.

At any rate, I'm in the process of reading Brian Pendreigh's book, The
Legend of the Planet of the Apes and on page 124 he writes, "Brent has
followed Taylor's route from twentieth-century Earth to the planet of the
apes, meets Nova and picks up where Taylor left off. Dehn and Abrahams even
considered a romance between Brent and Nova, before deciding the audience
might think ill of such infidelity on her part."

So there you go! Brent was NOT gay! He simply didn't have the chance to
hit on Nova and even if he had been confined in a cage with her for several
weeks the way Taylor had, he most likely would have thought twice about
doing the nasty with her since, when he first layed eyes on the girl, she
was wearing Taylor's dogtags. And I don't know about the rest of you, but
in the primative human society of 3955 AD, giving a girl your dogtags is
about as close as you'd ever get to a wedding ring!

Will

It's not LIKELY that I would meet him but it is possible.

I still hold out hope that he's a huge fan (maybe a sleeper on the group!;)
and when he has done KK - his fave ever, he'll be after his #2 fave POTA.
You never know.

I think POTA with a real LOTR touch would be kind cool. Any Irish writers
out there? The Irish sure know how to spin a yarn!

Brian didn't know any details about it, maybe Roddy didn't either. It
could've been as simple as, "I'd like to do a new POTA, please. Roddy here
will help develop it with me". There may not have been a story yet.
Obviously the person who would know is Jackson, and if I meet him (or you
folks do) that's certainly the question to ask. - - - Jeff

Yes, I know it doesn't matter, but in a way it DOES. If Brent was written
to be a gay man there was a reason for it. And analysing that reason could
be interesting.

If anyone does wish to protest this thread, please speak up now.

I think it will be fine so long as we don't reduce this to a name calling
session.

Ahhh....now we have another piece to add to the puzzle of what "makes" POTA!

Keep the audience off balance. eg Escape - it almost looked like it was
going to get fuzzy and goofy and then they killed tha mains and a baby!!!

I totally agree....good call JK.

One thing I remember is that Adam Rifkin said Fox wanted a happy ending
(which Rifkin, fan that he is, thought was a mistake). So that shows where
they were going. Make it a huge movie that would appeal to everybody. But
the key to POTA was it kept the audience off balance, like good science
fiction should. It's not "Pretty Woman"! - - - Jeff

Perhaps, but a guy can still look. Brent shows no interest in her. The only person he's happy to see is Taylor. He could've at least hit on Natalie Trundy. - - - Jeff
