Oh Lord! You've got to explain that one to me.... Let's see... being in
posession of dogtags equals homosexuality on someone's part?!?!? Huh...?
Is this a sick joke about where Taylor must have kept his dogtags while he
was in confinement? :)
I personally don't think Taylor had the dogtags during the time he was caged
by the apes. I think he and Nova managed to make it back to the place where
he and the other astronauts originally lost their clothes and supplies for a
brief time (where he managed to recover the dogtags) before heading back
into the Forbidden Zone. It's just as good an explantation as anything else
and it does NOT imply that just because a person is gay, he or she likes to
put things where the sun doesn't shine all the time....

Oh, come on! Give Brent a little credit, will ya? Just because he's not
salivating and grabbing her private parts in a crude, uncouth manner in
every other scene doesn't mean that he isn't attracted to the girl! Brent's
a grown man, not a hormone ravaged teenager! In fact, he bravely risks the
wrath of the mutant's mental torture to try to protect her from harm and
immediately after the scene in which he is forced to kiss her, he displays
genuine tenderness and affection for her.
Brent is not gay, I tell you! BRENT IS NOT GAY!!! He simply IS NOT a
sleazebag and Beneath wasn't a James Bond movie or a porno flick. Having a
scene in which Brent hits on Nova wouldn't have moved the story along in any
significant way so there was no need for it.

But WHY do the mutants make him kiss her? He shows no interest in her and then they make him kiss her. Why didn't they make him give her noogies? Or cheat at chess? It's an odd
juxtaposition. Brent ain't bad. If he wasn't gay, Natalie would've made him kiss her.
Brent can be enjoyed straight or gay. I just think it adds a little color to a rather bland character. - - - Jeff

I'm not taking him all that seriously, I don't mean to sound that way and I
certainly don't mean any disrespect to Jeff personally. I just feel
strongly that Brent wasn't gay. And even if he WAS gay (which wouldn't be
the end of the world if he was), how would you prove it? He doesn't hit on
any members of the same sex in the film either! Nor should he... BECAUSE IT
SIMPLY WOULD NOT ADVANCE THE PLOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM TO HAVE HIM DO
SO! What twisted logic!

How does Brent know she is Taylor's girl? There's no indication "he really wants to" kiss her. It doesn't have to be a scene where he hits on her. It could just be in
the subtext. But he doesn't even LOOK at her! - - - Jeff

Maybe because... being telepaths, they sense that he has the hots for her
but is fighting not showing it and they want to force him to do what he
secretly would love to do!
Again, I just think that Brent is a little too busy with being involved,
first in a crash landing in which his skipper dies AND THEN he is confronted
with IMMENSE cultural shock at being on a planet where apes talk and wear
clothes and THEN he is confronted with the fact that he is really back on
Earth. PLUS... he is pursued by gorillas and shot, for crying out loud!
What's he gonna do? Scream, "Stop the movie for a second so I can check out

You bet! Brent is in a "life is short" situation. He has some time when they are alone beneath the planet. It's no different than Taylor in the cage. He's gone through the
same things Brent does and we get the impression Taylor and Nova are an item.
Yes, probably the producers felt the audience knew T and N were a couple and don't want to suggest infidelity. If so, why the kiss? Could it be Dehn's private comment given that it seems his hands were tied
somewhat with "Beneath" (as stories I believe "Escape" and "Conquest" were more interesting)? Maybe it's meant to show a burning passion "beneath" the surface, but there's
no basis for that based on Brent's interaction with Nova before that. - - - Jeff

All good points, Jeff. But I must clarify that I am not unhappy. I simply
believe that Brent is a decent, hetrosexual male of good character who
doesn't just take advantage of naive native chicks every chance he gets.
Also remember, he wants to find Taylor and the girl he's traveling with is
wearing Taylor's dogtags, the equivalent of Taylor's football jacket or his
class ring. One can just imagine how differently the scene in which Taylor
and Brent finally do meet in the cage later on in the movie would have gone
if Brent really was that sleazy. "Taylor! I've been looking all over for
you, but ya know, I took advantage of your primitive girlfriend the first
chance I got! Couldn't help myself! She couldn't talk so she couldn't
exactly say 'no.'"

.htmlAgain I ask, how does Brent know Nova is Taylor's girl? She might have
just found the dog tags. There really isn't anything that would confirm
that. Brent even questions whether Taylor is still alive. If they bumped
into Taylor he would've forgiven him. Brent doesn't know what the audience
knows. No, I'm not saying they should have turned it into a soap opera (or
even it was the intention of the filmmakers that Brent is gay, though I can
see where Dehn might have toyed with it). I'm just saying based on what's on
the screen, my points are valid. - - - Jeff

It advances the plot by reinforcing by example that the mutants can make him
do almost anything they want him to do. A gratuituous sex scene between
Brent and Nova before they start to follow the hum in the underground subway
system would reinforce absolutely nothing except it might have forced you to
rethink your "Brent is gay because he doesn't look at Nova" idea.

Brent is supposed to know all that? Yeah, right! But you're probably right, Taylor is a bit of a grouch. He would probably punch first and ask questions later. But Brent is gay so it
wouldn't happen anyway.
When Brent tells Taylor that Nova is with him, does Taylor say, "You didn't touch her, did you?"? No, because he remembers Brent was that gay person back in the 20th Century. Not that there's anything
wrong with that. - - - Jeff

What? Taylor would have forgiven Brent for doing the nasty with "the only

.htmlHi Jeff! Come in and have some cookies... Let's talk!
I agree that you have lots of reason to believe that Brent may have
been gay. At least it is possible. Certainly the people who had the
authority and artistic license to do that had reason to make him so
that he could be perceived to be that way. And I'm amazed that you
pulled all this together and summized it. I don't have a problem
with that.
But, I agree with Will that it is certainly possible, and more easily
argued by me, that Brent was just a nice guy with some scruples and
perhaps a little dignity and jet lag. Why must we assume that he
would immediately "go for" Nova if he weren't gay?
I think his sexual orientation is not obvious and we would assume
that he is heterosexual based on having no real evidence to show
otherwise. Your arguments are all valid and enlightening.

No doubt about that - but the thing that is of most interest here is not how
they were mixed up (if it was done by accident that is) but rather why the
original cover was changed to begin with. It seems pretty strange to me.

Well the part at 14:55 seemed at first like it was part of Jerry's music
that was spliced into the existing scene (the editing isn't the smoothest)
but having listened to it again at 17:10 it sounds like it's a new piece of
music based on Jerry's score. It's different enough to be noticeable if
you've listened to the original often enough, but it is very similar. It's
probably not that surprising though really, as most of the TV music has a
similar vibe. The composers were probably instructed to stick as close to
the sound of the movies as possible and what better way to do that than
adapting bits of the original score!

Exactly the point I was trying to make Alan. It would be facinating
to find out the reason behind this. Also I wonder what the artist

That'd be a fair assumption, but from my standpoint, I'd guess it was taken
back to Central City and placed in Zaius's cabinet (by Zaius) along side the
grenades, books, and other curiosities from "intelligent" Humans...
By having Zaius possess the disc, it could have made for the plot of a good
"future episode" in which they have to retrieve it from his home...

Sorry I haven't spoken up much in the last several weeks. I have
been out of town a lot with work and have been going thru a
personal "crisis".
Anyway, I've gotten some more scanned this weekend, Ape Nation #4
and Ape City #1 and have them sent off to Greg P. Also, got the
script for Conquest and the Dehn Battle treatment re-scanned for him
to take another shot at and make look even better than before.
Other than that,I have just been here enjoying my weekend off and
spending some time with my 2 boys. By the way, my oldest watched
the Apes marathon with me on the Sci-Fi channel on Sunday...almost
brought a tear to my eye...he actually asked if he could watch it.
One of the proudest moments I have ever had.

It's okay to rock the boat. I don't think that anyone fell out yet.
I was feeling a little sheepish for having brought it up...
I didn't mean to "knock it down." I think it is well thought out and
valid. As a woman, though, I would like to think that he was a
decent, moral guy with values who wouldn't be THAT quick to take
advantage of the vulnerable native girl. I would also like to think
that there are guys on this group who would feel comfortable
defending that image. And, thankfully, there are.
I didn't mean to question your sanity specifically. I was actually
questioning the sanity of the male gender in general. Sheesh. Now
whose toes am I stepping on?

BRENT IS NOT GAY. NO NO BLOODY BLOODY NO.
But then he had a fit, tanned body and never made a move on Nova --
even given many chances...

Like I said, I don't think it's a question of Brent taking "advantage" of
Nova, just the subtext of his interaction with her. Like with Heston in the
original, we know he likes her but there's no point where he "takes her".
Brent is a one-dimensional character, a disappointment after Taylor. Maybe
there was no thought given to him other than being an action figure but he's
a blank slate with room to speculate. I speculated. - - - Jeff

Is there any info on how regularly AC will be released or will it vary?
Also, to help plug this issue could you just run through the articles (on

.htmlJust wanted to let everyone know that the group's posts for November
2003 have been deleted from the main site and can now be found in
the files section of the Archives as a text file:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
For those of you who are new to the group, we have to do this
periodically to free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to
the groups anymore. As this group is so active we tend to fill up
very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep
a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups to store
excess stuff on.
One important point - to access the old posts etc. you will need to
be a member of the Archives group. As we have recently had
to 'revamp' the group it will be necessary for all of those who were
previously members of the Archives to also (re)join.
The same is also true for the Fan Fiction and Photos groups:

Before you remove them, I would like to thank you for hosting them.
It was an education for me. I personally think they are ugly, but
maybe that's where they got the idea for the pota2001 apes.
Anyway...
Are you also removing the coloring books? I notice that one is
missing. (Conquest) Do you have plans for putting that one on your
site? I'd like to copy all of the coloing books before they
disappear, rather than just a picture or two. Is there some way to
save these files to my computer hard drive? Otherwise, if there is
time, I will put them on paper.
Thanks,

The scripts written for the new movie weren't very good, including the final product (after a decade) for Burton's movie. I'd like to have read what James Cameron wrote but his
didn't get distributed during a preproduction period so we'll probably never know; but I heard he wrote a treatment. He told me it was going to be "a synthesis of the first two films plus some new
ideas". He also said he wouldn't go through with it unless he got the script right; he didn't want to sully POTA's memory.
I'd also be interested in reading Bill Broyles' script before it was rewritten and became Burton's movie. "Variety" and "Hollywood Reporter" said it was very good, though Zanuck
complained it had centaurs in it.
Of the scripts I've read, I thought the Oliver Stone one had the most potential, since it tried to go it's own way and not just look at POTA through nostalgia. It took place in the past and had the POTA here
BEFORE us. I was resistant at first, because I like the idea of the apes coming after us and finding bits of our civilization, etc. The script itself needs a lot of work (written by Terry Hayes) but I like Oliver Stone
and I'm sure if he stayed around he could've whipped it into shape (he told me he didn't like the script).
All 3 of the scripts (Adam Rifkin's, Stone/Hayes' and Chris Columbus/ Sam Hamm's ) are available on Hunter's site. - - - Jeff

Actually, Jeff, what is the BEST script that was thrown around in the
80's / 90's that was never filmed as the next POTA?

I didn't care for them, either.
> Are you also removing the coloring books?
No, I'm not planning to remove them unless someone officially asks me
too. The Adventure Comics' books are a lot more recent and still
pretty readily available in comics shops, so I'm not comfortable
leaving them up permanently. The coloring books and Power Records
files are so old (and have been out-of-print for so many years) that
I'm not too worried about the attention they may draw.

If memory serves (and Greg P. can correct me if I'm wrong), the
contents of the final coloring book were identical to one of the
others, just with a different cover.

Along with the release of George Lucas' "Star Wars" movies on DVD this month, Lucas is also releasing his first feature film, "THX 1138", in a brand new
director's cut. This film featured Don Pedro Colley (Ongoro, one of the mutants in "Beneath") and was released in 1971 (a year after "Beneath"). It's slated for a limited run in theatres on
Sept. 10 and a DVD release on Sept. 14 (available in a movie only edition or a 2-disc special edition). And it's a sci-fi film, dealing with a repressive underground society (like "Beneath") and is
considered a classic of it's time (some find it Lucas' best, others find it boring). It also had music by Lalo Schifrin, a couple years before he did the theme for the POTA TV show. In any case, George Lucas
fans will find happiness this month. - - - Jeff

I do have a sixth coloring book, but when getting ready to scan it I noticed that every single page had already appeared in the other books. In fact, it was mostly a duplicate of one book
with a few pages from another book. The cover for this one had Aldo on it from Battle, but the gorillas in the background were in their Conquest jumpsuits. I also know there's at least one activity book that I
don't have (with faces of 4 characters in circles on the cover). Given the amount of duplication among all the books I can't be sure that there would be much new material so I haven't tried very hard to hunt
it down. Perhaps someone who has it could compare the contents to the books already on Hunter's site.
Helen, I'm very glad you're enjoying these and making good use of them. My niece and nephew have enjoyed them as well, and I can't wait until my younger nephews are a little bit older so I can give them
copies as well.
