The last time I watched those "Return" shows I really got tired of the stiff

.htmlLike I said, it's no big deal. We've been putting together a book of
family POTA pictures, POTA quotes, and familiar POTA faces. Mostly a
family project scrapbook with other bits thrown in.

.htmlI haven't seen these cartoons since they aired on TV and I watched my
little brother watch them. I admit they didn't interest me. I don't
know why I mention it, as it doesn't contribute to the flow of
discussion, but they never seemed like POTA to me. Just my opinion.

.htmlI'd actually like some short, light stuff. Quotes, blurbs, small
quips. Especially about production and actors.

.htmlWell I got very excited about them when I was young.....and then they
disappeared as suddenly as they came and it was all over.
Looking at them now, I think the stories are really good - particularly for
kids.
Where "Apeslayer" took a generic comic and pasted ape heads on, "Return"
kinda took a general POTA theme and pasted POTA names on - to me.
I'm sure Heston disallowed the use of HIS character's name....so they used
Brent!
The "General Stripes" on the Helmet are distracting! Glad I have them
though.....

Mego never even considered getting Heston's permission to use his

I have been trying hard to make out the words and I will be allocating a
specific month (soon) to the study and discussion of "Return" - as soon as
everybody on the group has it on DVD....then maybe we can all try to watch
an episode at a time and discuss it.
Can you please post the words as you have them so far? It's a great song!

Thanks Tim, you're a little darling :0)
Is this from your own collection or is it something you found on the net? If it's
yours can you make out that signature?

the scrapbook.
1.) I know that somewhere there exists a photo sequence of Roddy
being made up to be Cornelius. I even thought I had it, but I can't
find it. Maybe someone here knows where that is?
2.) Also, it would be cool to have clear screen grabs of the Simpsons
POTA opera -- A Fish Called Selma? I don't know if that is possible
or available. It would be cool to have the Planet of the Apes
Marquee, "He can talk", "I can sssiiing", "Get your paws off
me", "OMG, I was wrong" with statue, Fireworks scene, and "I love you
Dr. Zaius."
So, if anyone has these or the technology to grab them and would like
to share, that would be great! Thanks.

Now, please tell me... Where is the picture of Neil's solar sail?
I envision a sail that is actually made of metallic "fabric" (maybe
like mylar) slats -- much like a Venetian blind. They lock into
a "closed" position to catch the full force of the "wind", but can be
opened with smooth adjustments to catch varying amounts of the "wind"
for the purpose of adjusting the speed and direction of the craft.
The slats would have to be collapsible to that they can be slid
together around the body of the craft to "shrink" its size.
I haven't read chapter two recently so I'd guess I'd better do that,
but that is what I envision for whatever reason.

You must have a printer to make this stuff off the web, I guess, right? If
so, James could probably do the Roddy McDowall thing off images from his home
movies on the new POTA DVD, also the Simpson stuff. I'd assume you know how to
get in touch with him.

First off, thanks to Neil for the Roddy sequence. I guess it came

Second, thanks Rory for suggesting James. I actually thought of him,
but thought I remembered him getting screen grabs from other people.

-- Actually that is the same reaction I had! There really wasn't
much information about the Marvel strips from these comic greats and
yes it really is a pity that most of them didn't have their hearts
in it.
These interviews would have been much better served being in a fan
magazine about comics not one devoted to POTA seeing as they contain
very few questions & answers about 'Apes'.
The comment by Tony Isabella that he thought Mike Ploog doing the
art for 'Terror' "was a waste of his talents" really did annoy me,
sorry to say.
Thankfully John Bolton and the rest of the interviewees did have a
liking for POTA and actually talked about it!
The article by Alan Maxwell was also a delight, well written and
showing a lot of enthusiasm for the subject, it's just a pity the
subject is the Adventure comics :-(
Damn, I'm sounding like a critic here! Sorry, I just feel those
early interviews with the Marvel guys are a bit of a waste of time
and space.

|
.html Here's a little item I found at FSM.com. It made #29 on a list of the top
100 movie themes.
"PLANET OF THE HUMANS," Escape From The Planet of the Apes - Jerry Goldsmith
(1971) Goldsmith faced an unusual challenge with his score for Escape From the
Planet of the Apes (besides the daunting task of writing a sequel score to
his own Planet of the Apes, not only one of his greatest works but also arguably
the most groundbreaking and influential score of its era). In the original
film, he used serial techniques and offbeat orchestrations to evoke the
alienness of a post-apocalyptic Earth for its time traveling heroes. In Escape, he had
a similar but opposite task -- to portray modern day America as an alien
landscape. Goldsmith's main theme miraculously manages to be goofy and bitchin' at
the same time (the exotically funky orchestrations help), and also serves as
a thrilling piece of action music. The main motif is given a slow, plaintive
rendition at the finale, the rare movie ending that manages to be both tragic
and sequel friendly.

My apologies for the bad language. When I wrote the story it never occurred
to me that it might be read by youngsters. I think it would be wise if you didn't
read any further but I promise I will bear a younger audience in mind from
now on.
I'll tell you what - my 11 year old son has promised to write me a POTA story
this coming weekend. If he does I'll send you the result - how does that
sound?
On the first page they were not trying to hurt each other, they were just
training and yes, Galen is a chimpanzee, just like in the TV show.
Now, I'll tell you a secret but you have to promise not to tell anyone... I don't
like 'Killer instinct' either.
God bless,

I agree, but unfortunately we can only use what we are given or choose not
publish at all.

Me too, which explains and hopefully justifies my sarcastic caption for the
Ploog illustration.

No, that's fair enough. "You can't please all of the people all of the time". I will
say that the feedback from the UK has been very positive (so far) and the
letter below is a typical response. MY pet peeve concerning interviews is
when you put a lot of thought into a question and the response is "I can't
remember."
Dave B
"Dear John,
Thanks for SS#9 - I think it's a brilliant issue. Please pass my
congratulations on to everyone involved. The layout has come on in leaps
and bounds - it looks seriously good now. The repro of the pics is
particularly pleasing - suitably for a comic-themed issue - and the
sub-editor in me is pleased to see so much text in such good shape. And, of
course, well done for getting so many interviews. The work that went into
this issue shines through on each page. In comic-book idiom: it's all
killer, no filler.
I'm not done reading it yet (there seems to be twice as much content as
usual and I'm pacing myself), but the highlight so far is Alan Maxwell's
considered piece on the Adventure series, which sent me scuttling back to
my collection for a read and reminded me that I'm still missing a few
issues. In fact, this issue of Scrolls has generally rejuvenated my
interest in the comics side of Apes. I expect it'll have the same effect on
others." <.html

.html Regarding the subject of interviews, it is very difficult. Like Dave said,
we can only go with what we've got. Ultimately we could reduce it to chat
about Apes but then they would be very short interviews indeed. One question
if you're lucky. Not only that, but how would it look if these people had
taken time out their schedule to fill in a lot of q&a for us only to see in
the finished article that we didn't even bother to use it?
It's unfortunate that because so much of Apes comicdom was so long ago this
is going to be the case more often than not, but I think you'll agree it's
better to get an interview about their work in general and maybe get some
Apes info in the process than not get anything at all.
As for people not liking Apes - too bad but I'll live. The important thing
is that they are willing to answer our questions all the same. I would
rather have an honest interview than a nice one. If they don't like Apes I'd
prefer to hear that rather than them pretending in order to humour us.
Anyway, glad to hear that people have enjoyed the latest issue. If my piece
on the Adventure Comics series has got even one person going back and taking
another look I'm happy. It's always bugged me that when talking about this
series people always focus on the disappointments (how many times have you
heard people mention the "apes on bikes" aspect?) but forget all about the
positive aspects. I could go on all day about this, but I think I'll stop
here and let you read it all for yourselves in SS9!

I have this cover somewhere and if I'm not mistaken (on my copy at least - I
am assuming they are all the same) it was actually pretty poorly printed. It
had that out-of-synch kind of look (whatever it's called), the same look
that has plagued some of the Argentinian comic covers.

I just think the dog was put there for atmosphere. That was the closest the TV show could afford for a hunt scene. I don't see it as a statement about the movies, or lack thereof. The
TV show writers couldn't even juggle Virdon's disc and we're giving them credit for remembering minutia from the movies? - - - Jeff

It does seem the dog was put in there intentionally to make a
statement (as Kass suggests) rather than to enhance the plot. The
story could have been written easily enough without the dog! And
anyone following the movies KNEW there were no dogs or cats.

From reading this chapter, I gather that the astronauts plan on being in
space for awhile or at least away from Earth for a long period of time. I noticed
that being in space is described by as being heavy in the first year of
acceleration. Maybe they were in space a few years before they land on pota. The
amount of supplies on the ship is also a clue that a family will
eventually live on the ship. Elaine

accept two timelines (Corn & Zira going back in time starting a second
timeline). In "Escape", Cornelius, referring to how apes rose before
"Planet" and "Beneath", doesn't say all dogs and cats died (as Armando does
in "Conquest"). He says, "Man was without pets". And given possible poor ape
record keeping, I think that one could assume some dogs survived, perhaps
wild before being integrated into ape society. The apes take over earlier in
"Conquest" than in the TV show, so a second timeline is the only way to
include the TV show. - - - Jeff

The chronology in "Ape Chronicles" is meant to connect the dots on all the movie-inspired POTA stories (official, not fan fiction). It excludes the book and Burton's movie. It's not meant to be THE
chronology, just A chronology. I just wanted to see how the pieces would fit and do my best to put round pegs in square holes. Of course, the first part was published a decade ago, before there was all this give and
take on the 'net. Writing about POTA was much more lonelier and introspective then. I've tried to keep a record of peoples' points and include them in the conclusion. But I don't have any writing in the
new "Ape Chronicles" Terry has mentioned. I hope to bring "Veetus" back soon.
We are fine here in jail and they treat us well. Best to all, Jeff.

to comment? is this different to the way YOU would visualise what is being
described?
Rory, I couldn't agree more with your statement that it is PlanetS of the
Apes......I interpret this to mean that there are meany different takes and
universes WITHIN the whole and that's how I see it. I try to logically
piece it together soit works as well as possible for me, and that's what
MANY people do, but I think it is more than obvious that there is a LACK of
continuity even in the FILMS, let alone when you include the TV Show and the
Cartoons and the Comics.
Jeff, I wonder if you could reveal some SNIPPETS of your timeline as a
"shameless promotion" for that back-issue of Ape Chronicles? ;)
Are you still doing Veetus strips for the new issues?

.htmlI wrote down the lyrics to the "Return" song long ago. It's pretty simple.
There must not be too much to doing an actor's likeness. Look at what
Sideshow is doing. Maybe back in the day. Today the likeness on toys is
incredible. I remember Marvel was allowed to show pictures from the TV show,
but not of the film human actors like Heston. And they were allowed to do
comic adaptations of the films but not the TV show. Go figure. - - - Jeff

I think the whole POTA saga is only a dream. Then Tarzan wakes up and realizes he'd dozed off. That's how I see it. Anybody who disagrees is just a bunch of fanboys (or fanladies)!

That was unfortunate.
Anyone, PLEASE feel free to post your views on whatever theory you
subscibe to, I always enjoy reading them and look forward to hearing what
you have to say - but, as Neil suggests, do try to avoid any thinly disguised
contempt for the views of others.

.htmlYeah, like Dave and Alan said. There's a big wide world out there. Why
discount someone just because they don't talk about "Apes" or even like
"Apes". For many people "Apes" was an assignment, whether they were actors,
artists, hairstylists. Their contributions made it what it is and it's
interesting to see how their background, interests, etc. influenced their
contribution. Even Roddy couldn't think of anything to say about "Battle" in
the "Behind the POTA" special ed. DVD. And when you're put on the spot by
those bullies at "Scrolls", sometimes it's hard to remember your own name.
Keep those interviews coming! And interviews about Adventure comics are fine
by me, too. I liked them. Well, some of them. A few of them. A couple of
them. Uh...I don't know. - - - Jeff

That's an excellent point, my friend. The writers changed from episode to

I think the book it much better than even the first movie, but it definitely
lacks action scenes. Even the hunt in the book is only three pages! But, Dr.

Actually I always consider the TV show to be part of the second APES timeline
started with ESCAPE. The show is a sequel to BATTLE, though it does take
place on the opposite coast of the US, though many insist that CONQUEST and
BATTLE took place on the west coast. If that's true than the TV Show is very much
a sequel to BATTLE.

That's what I thought when I was eight years old and saw the movie for the
first time. I saw Taylor go to sleep at the beginning of the movie and I
thought he'd wake up at the end. Then the movie ended the way it did and I was
psychologically scarred for life! DAMN THAT MOVIE ALL TO HELL!

Maybe they were -- on the West Coast! The East half of the US was destroyed
in an earlier nuclear war, and that's where the apes came to dominate first,
then another nuclear holocaust happened several hundred years later. That
would help to explain to some of you POTA fans how Cornelius and Zira's story in
ESCAPE of how APES were slaves for hundreds of years could be true without the
need for there to be two timelines. Anyway, why have we assumed that mankind
could be destroyed in just one nuclear conflict?

I don't see any connections at all. With the original movie, it looks cut
off from the rest of the world, while in the TV show Ape civilization is
concentrated on the West Coast. That's a good fit to me. Movie Zauis'
society is cut off and they stagnate. - - - Jeff

not totally
true. Humans keep a variety of pets as we all know. Dogs and cats are the
most common. I was reading in Time Magazine that there are 7,000 tigers kept as
pets in the US. I still believe that a plague would not wipe out all dogs and
cats since some would be immune to it. Elaine
