-- Hi Kenny. Just the other week Mike Whitty was offering FREE
copies of Return on DVD for anyone who wanted them. The only thing
is that you need to be able to play / watch PAL format DVDs, oh, and
he is on holidays at the moment so you probably won't hear from him
on the group for a week or so. Just keep a look out for when
he 'returns' and if anyone wants copies you can organise it with him
when he gets back.

Funny how Whitty was planning to charge (only to recoup costs) when he
was going to redistribute what I produce, and then he didn't want any
part of the redistribution, but is now offering what he has for free.

.htmli have a fairly decent copy on vhs.
if the "official" project falls through, i guess i could be the back-up.

As I posted last week, I'm actively working on capturing and
converting now. I didn't intend for this project to take so long, but
I also didn't anticipate several work weeks of 70+ hours. I hope to
have the whole thing completed by the end of October, and several
people volunteered to help with distribution. I haven't seen the
copies Michael has, but I did get tapes (and DVDs) from five other
sources, and most of them were barely watchable. I have an excellent
(as in, much better than any others I've seen, including some bought
off eBay) source that I'm capturing now, thanks to Mike Rogers.

Could be, but he was the one talking about only distributing them to
PotaDG members and not others. It was my reply about not placing
limits on who could receive them that prompted him to withdraw from
redistributing what I eventually come up with.

for those who dont know: converting analog video signal to digital DVD signal is very time-consuming.

From 22-AUG-2004:
As it stands, these will be available to everyone on all POTA groups
and members of the fan club.
That's if my understanding of all these groups as joining together in
peace and encouraging the promotion of all as a community is correct -
I have been lead to believe (because of the posts I have sent that
were deleted at the pota group) that I might be wrong, and the pota
group might actually be trying to be competitive AGAINST the other
groups. If that's the case then I'll rethink exclusivity on the discs
and many other projects.
It was the whole "as it stands" and "rethink exclusivity" thing I am
commenting on. You were pissed off that James left the group, and you
were trying to use a project that *I* am working on to get back at
him.
> When you re-read my posts, please apologise to me PRIVATELY so as to
> respect the people on this group who do NOT wish to hear you making
> nasty false claims about me.
No nasty, false claims. You *were* talking about only distributing
them to PotaDG members ("rethink exclusivity"), and when I replied
that they'd be available to anyone who wanted them, you threw a hissy
fit and pulled out altogether:
>> Forget "as it stands," that's the way it will be, too. Or else the
>> copies will be just for me and my sources.
> I'd prefer not to be involved in this any more actually, thanks
> Hunter.
You then proceeded to ask who in the U.S. could burn copies, as if I
couldn't take care of that. It apparently burns you up that somebody
might be working on something POTA-related that doesn't involve you.
> If you must make your hatred for me public, then please do not feel
> obliged to remain in this group.
I have no hatred for you. I just think your ego (or something) can't
stand for somebody to do something without you being in charge of it.
I feel no obligation to remain in the group. I've remained in the
group *despite* your increasingly bizarre behavior.

Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your
fancy, or start one up yourself!
Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is the DG Archives group :
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have been
deleted from the main site. we have to do this periodically to free up
space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead
of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them all. They can
be found in the Files section listed by month and year .
There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in the
group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to be
enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/
Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos are very occasionally moved to save space on the main DG
group
All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home
Page.
And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and all
that great stuff in the Files section. While your here why not
participate in a Poll or check out all those wonderful links and
generally have a fun filled family experience!

We should have all tried to move on since those traumatic days and

I didn't get to see them for years, and then not in great condition,
until recently.
At least things aren't as bad as when they first aired in the UK. I
lived near Manchester and the local TV station didn't show them.
They were on just over the border in Wales though and if you got my
portable B&W TV up high enough your arms and legs pointing in the
exact right direction whilst holding the ariel, if your prayers were
answered and the wind was blowing the right way, you could just
about make out vague snowy shapes moving on the screen. You could
hear it perfectly though so I got to hear it and imagine what things
looked like. Weird!
Then again after 'seeing' the cartoon show maybe I was better off
back then...hmmm... ;-)

I tend to like the idea of mankind being noble enough to store and
preserve animal dna in case something went wrong so they could
be 'brought back' somehow.
They could already have been well into plans to repopulate the Earth
with dogs (and cats) whilst Conquest was going on.
Of course they would never have got their places back as 'man's best
friend' because those chimpanzees are just so damn cute.

No, I saw a few of them when they were originally on the network. The only
distinct thing I can remember of the shows back then was Judy
dematerializing (or her image) after talking to Bill and Jeff about the
danger to the underdwellers.

I recall that Kassidy had gotten the question to Mr. Harper and word came back that he didn't have any scripts, or at least not the ones we still need.
It was my hope that once the archive was complete that other fans who had scrpts would come forward with them. Right now the archive has all of the scripts that either Greg Harris or I had plus the others that fans such
as John Roche and Jeff Krueger have supplied. One fan has come forward with a script we don't have (not a TV script) and will be sending me scans, but I'll refrain from identifying him (or her) so as not to
apply any undue pressure to get those scans to me more quickly.
In the meantime, I'm going back and rescanning some of the first scripts I did for the archive, now that I have better software, a faster scanner and more experience.

We don't seem to be any closer to an 'Apes 2" but, of all things, Mel Brooks says he's currently writing a sequel to his '80's sci-fi spoof "Spaceballs"
(wasn't that a flop?). For a while now, Brooks' name has been mud in the movies, but his career was ratched up a notch by the huge success of his theatre adaptation of his movie 'The Producers"
(currently being made as a movie). So I guess he has the clout to get the spaceball rolling. He told the theatre magazine "Playbill" (his comments can be seen at www.aintitcool.com ) that
"Spaceballs" was his best filmmaking experience since "Blazing Saddles". Hmm, did he forget about "Young Frankenstein", which was filmed at the Fox lot when the "Apes" TV show was
being made? I've read somewhere about Brooks recounting bumping into apes there while makeing the movie. And the Frankenstein castle from the movie was used as Virdon's prison in "The Legacy".
Anyway, Brooks says he hopes to have the sequel in theatres around the time of the new "Star Wars" flick next summer. And for those who are wondering what this has to do with anything, the original
"Spaceballs" has a POTA spoof that seems to be one of the most memorable moments. Perhaps "Apes" will turn up in the sequel? He's writing it right now! Anyone who knows Mel Brooks, go hang out. -

.htmlHi John,
Tim Burton and many of his "Ape" cohorts (including Helena Bonham Carter
and Richard Zanuck) are doing a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory", starring Johnny Depp. Burton said he wouldn't do an "Apes 2" and
obviously feels burned by the experience, being rushed by Fox, etc. He says
from now on he won't commit to a film that has a release date before the
script is ready and has had a renewed interest in having a good writer
("Chocolate Factory" is written by the same guy who did a good job for him
on "Big Fish").
As for "Apes 2", Richard Zanuck seemed the most interested in carrying on
and "getting the story right". There's been rumors (including from Linda
Harrison) that they are working on a script but no announcements of a movie
that I've heard. Basically Fox rushed it and blew it. The merchandisers got
burned and "Apes" is an expensive proposition. Fox is more interested in the
cheaper, easy to promote franchises like "Garfield". Recent projects
announced by Fox include "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and the toy line "Brats"
(spoiled rich girls). Move along folks, there's nothing to see at
Fox. - - - Jeff

.htmlThanks for sharing the response Jeff.
As much as I dislike unconfirmed rumours, I also heard from someone VERY
close to the Zanuck camp that they are going to try Planet of the Apes
again, but this time with input from fans and people who have a far
better idea WHY POTA was so popular.
I wish I could say more but it would betray the trust of someone who
told me this in confidence.
I'll also remind everyone how long it took to get Burton's movie out and
how many CONFIRMED rumours led up to it, how many times it changed hands
etc (which is really why this person wishes to remain un-named - because
there is still only a SLIM chance!).
I would advise those who want a POTA movie to get out your pens and
start writing. Beware the Beast has now been compiled into two 22 page
comics which include the extra pages (they are "ash can" size at the
moment). Dave Ballard should be getting his copies any day now and I
will be forwarding Neil his copies as soon as I get them.
I'll be sending the comics and a poster to Debbie at Fox and a few
interested publishers as soon as I get the comics. As it stands, if the
publishers don't want to take the plunge, I'll be paying to have 1 000
printed.
I know I'm being optimistic, but I strongly believe in Beware the Beast
and I think it could be a strong weapon to win back old fans and recruit
new fans. If it does, and if we can maintain momentum and pump out good
stories regularly and keep up the quality of art, I think in a couple of
years we might be looking at a new movie and a TV Show, cartoon....sky
is the limit. So wish us luck and again big thanks to Dave for the
great story and to Neil for the great art.
With Simian Scrolls and Ape Chronicles getting stronger all the time,
new product coming out, we could be in for a resurgence!

Hi John,
Tim Burton and many of his "Ape" cohorts (including Helena Bonham
Carter
and Richard Zanuck) are doing a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory", starring Johnny Depp. Burton said he wouldn't do an "Apes 2"
and
obviously feels burned by the experience, being rushed by Fox, etc. He
says
from now on he won't commit to a film that has a release date before the
script is ready and has had a renewed interest in having a good writer
("Chocolate Factory" is written by the same guy who did a good job for
him
on "Big Fish").
As for "Apes 2", Richard Zanuck seemed the most interested in carrying
on
and "getting the story right". There's been rumors (including from Linda
Harrison) that they are working on a script but no announcements of a
movie
that I've heard. Basically Fox rushed it and blew it. The merchandisers
got
burned and "Apes" is an expensive proposition. Fox is more interested in
the
cheaper, easy to promote franchises like "Garfield". Recent projects
announced by Fox include "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and the toy line
"Brats"
(spoiled rich girls). Move along folks, there's nothing to see at
Fox. - - - Jeff

I wasn't even going to say anything, other than private comments I made
to Neil, until I came across an email from Dave (dated June) saying that
this is his LEAST favourite SS and why.
That really encouraged me to speak my mind. Sorry if that offended
anyone.
Personally, if I interviewed someone for a fanzine that is "by the fans,
for the fans" and some of the interviewees gave these responses, I would
not go with the interviews. Especially when Rich Handley's fascinating
piece is gathering dust.....something that is about a project "by the
fans, for the fans"......not a guy with an ego who can't even be tactful
enough to PRETEND POTA isn't rubbish and then drone on about his other
work that would be more suited to a "COMIC COLLECTORS" magazine than a
"POTA" magazine.
Other than that, it is a wonderful issue and it was well worth the wait
and I thank all those who sacrificed their social lives to provide it.
It is certainly worth the cover price and a whole lot more, I just had a
reaction to it that I thought would be worth sharing. Maybe I'm wrong;
maybe someone at SS was wrong......please don't take offence.

Regarding the subject of interviews, it is very difficult. Like Dave
said,
we can only go with what we've got. Ultimately we could reduce it to
chat
about Apes but then they would be very short interviews indeed. One
question
if you're lucky. Not only that, but how would it look if these people
had
taken time out their schedule to fill in a lot of q&a for us only to see
in
the finished article that we didn't even bother to use it?
It's unfortunate that because so much of Apes comicdom was so long ago
this
is going to be the case more often than not, but I think you'll agree
it's
better to get an interview about their work in general and maybe get
some
Apes info in the process than not get anything at all.
As for people not liking Apes - too bad but I'll live. The important
thing
is that they are willing to answer our questions all the same. I would
rather have an honest interview than a nice one. If they don't like Apes
I'd
prefer to hear that rather than them pretending in order to humour us.
Anyway, glad to hear that people have enjoyed the latest issue. If my
piece
on the Adventure Comics series has got even one person going back and
taking
another look I'm happy. It's always bugged me that when talking about
this
series people always focus on the disappointments (how many times have
you
heard people mention the "apes on bikes" aspect?) but forget all about
the
positive aspects. I could go on all day about this, but I think I'll
stop
here and let you read it all for yourselves in SS9!

Thanks, Neil. I was trying to live up to the standards you set on the illustrations that accompanied the 'lost episodes' article in Scrolls, which was part of the inspiration for
doing this set. (The other part was Rittenhouse's use of the classic Topps format for their Heston set.)

i love the text and puzzle on the back.
any plans to print these?
(it would be a nice experience for younger fans (like myself) to be able to buy brand new cards...a wax wrapper would be cool! and some chewing gum!)

Did you come up with the story first and then fit the pictures to it
or was it the other way round?
