A friend rented it the other night and we re-started it twice before giving up. The CGI kills me - it's almost as if I have to sit and watch computer geeks display their prowess. The plot becomes
secondary and I lose all empathy. Was there a plot, by the way? (Snore)

I enjoy the cartoon series more now than I
did as a kid. Probably because I understand better the process of production and
a more easygoing appreciation of all things "Apes". - - - Jeff

O.K. As the Father of a 4yr. old I have to come to the
defense of the Return to the Planet of the Apes cartoon. Yes, its fairly
bad. The astronauts wearing turtle necks and one being named Jif makes you
wonder what the hell they where thinking. But the artwork was really
quite good for the time and the stories where not half bad for
Saturday morning cartoons. When I see my son watching the cartoon and
see the reaction he gets from watching them it makes me realize "oh
yeah, these were ment for little kids on Saturday mornings" not for
30yr old+ adults to be watching.

Actually, it was John Oberhauser who created the Flash animations of the Power Records, using audio files supplied by Michael (and cleaned up by Hunter) and scans of the comics supplied by me. In addition to the
Flash files, Hunter's site has MP3s of all of the Power Records (movie and TV) and PDFs of the movie comics.
I did burn one pair of CDs for a fan who didn't have a CD burner, but other than that there's been no distribution of Power Record CDs that I'm aware of. I did work up some CD labels that mimic the
original LPs, but have been meaning to tweak them a bit more (and work up a CD booklet) before giving them to Hunter to add to his site. Other things have come up, but I'll get back to that sooner or later.

Get Carter, starring Hollywood action man Sylvester Stallone, has been voted the worst movie remake of all time.
The classic original, starring Michael Caine, was moved from 1960s Newcastle to Seattle for the 2000 remake.
Film fans were also left unimpressed by the remake of Alfie - a role also made famous by Caine.
Alfie - starring Jude Law - came sixth in the Top 10 Worst Remakes poll, carried out by DVD rental firm ScreenSelect.co.uk.
TOP FIVE
Get Carter
Psycho
Thunderbirds
The Assassin
Charlie's Angels
"Time after time, remakes fail to sparkle like the originals," said Alex Chesterman, founder of ScreenSelect.co.uk.
"The rehashed productions trade off fond memories of much-loved films.
"This poll is an indication that remakes can't compare with films which were classics of their time.
"It also proves you just can't beat Michael Caine," he added.
Second in the poll was Gus Van Sant's attempt to remake the Alfred Hitchcock horror Psycho for a new audience.
Thunderbirds movie was third, followed by Bridget Fonda thriller The Assassin - a remake of the cult film La Femme Nikita.
Other films to make the top 10 were Charlie's Angels - starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu - and Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.
The poll of 2,000 film fans also showed they preferred the Frank Sinatra original of Ocean's Eleven than the George Clooney and Brad Pitt update.

Dear Apeophiles,
I just wanted to say its been a pleasure to have joined your group
and I hope you keep it going. I hope to contribute more to it all,
and I will as I get myself organised.
A few questions !!!
1. Did Medicom produce a catalogue of all its POTA merchandise ?
I know they had an on-line catalog. I do not know if they printed a
flyer/brochure or catalog for the line. They may have, I just have no
info.
2. Do we know who the artists/sculptures were?
I personally do not.
3. A year ago I saw advertised a Japanese photo book for about £40.00
/$80.00, at the time I thought it was all to do with Tim Burtons
Rehash, Was it? or was it the book that I have always wanted I..e.
a large scale full colour Photographic account of all that is
POTA?
Not aware of it.
4. I have just recieved my Apemania Cornelius Mask and it is
wonderfull. Do any of the group have pictures (close up) of the
Don Post Cornelius mask?
I have some somewhere.
5. What happened to Don Post, You never hear od him?it now?
Don Post senior died sometime in the 70's I believe. Don Post Jr has
been
in charge ever since. They still have a small studio in North Hollywood
California. Most of the production is done overseas I believe. I
worked as
a designer for Post's Special Projects division back in 1983. It was a
huge
magical place and a great thing to be a part of.
6. Do you think that Tim Burtons POTA and the recent Van Helsing
Made the same mistake
Yes. They never should have been made. That was their mistake.
I.e. People (myself included) wanted to
see the classic POTA/Universal characters brought back to the big
screen in all their glory(origonal costumes and make up,New
adventures)?
Burton's apes needed a script, any script, something! Anything!
PAH-LEEEZE!!!
I could see the Karloff/Whale/Pierce Monster in full colour
million dollar epic or the McDowall/Chambers Cornelius/Ceasers/
Galen character brought into a new progression of the POTA
timeline(sons of whatever)?
Obviously new actors would recreate the characters but it would
have been more to the fans, as well as the publics liking as these
characters are now culteral icons. Their very image can conjour
up all sorts of memories and back stories before the film makers
shoot a single frame.
When I win the lottery, I will finance a mini-series for the Sci-Fi
Channel,
done right.
Brian
Anyways......enough of my ranting.....I would be interested in
your thoughts. (and answers)
John.

My personal fave is Dracula Prince of Darkness. It's the one where
Christopher Lee doesn't talk. It's not that he didn't have any
lines. He just thought they were too stupid to say. So he
didn't. It's very effective. It was the first Dracula movie I saw in
a theater as a kid. I thought it was very scary. Though today it may
seem tame by gore standards. The same hold true for POTA, with all the FX
laden fare out today. But both have held up very well.

On page 239 of Joe Russo and Larry Landsman's Planet of the Apes Revisited it's mentioned that NBC considered doing an additional 3 episodes for a second season which would have wrapped up the story. (It
wasn't uncommon in those days to make just a few new episodes for the second season of a Saturday morning show and mix them in with repeats of the first season.) Doug Wildey had these three episodes planned.
I'll refrain from posting the few details he provided so as not to spoil it for anybody.

.html First of all, I enjoy much of the Saturday Morning kidvid stuff from the
1970's because that's what I cut my teeth on as a kid. Most of the time, the
nostalga transcends how good or bad it is.
That being said, I think that Return To The Planet Of The Apes was really
good taking into account when it was made and what audience it was aimed at.
Seeing it as an adult I was impressed that the stories followed an arc, they
weren't self contained. Judy the female astronaut would be lost in the first
show, but turn up in the third with the underdwellers but they still didn't
really get her back until a later episode.
It was aimed at kids but still tried to avoid the usual pitfalls of animated
adaptations of live action material at that time. They didn't put in a child
ape or human character or a cute animal character. They did thier best to
maintain the menace of Apes to humans without violence. They also succeeded
in making the underdwellers a lot creepier then i thought they would be
allowed to make them for back then.
What they did do is put in a bunch of Monsters. The sea creature, the giant
spider, the giant bird. They knew boys were watching the Godzilla and other
movies. They also had a giant friendly ape in a couple episodes.
Although the animation was almost non-existant sometimes, I like the high
contrast, comic book like art design of the show.
I think Return is a fair contender of the real classics of the 1970's
Saturday morning kid vid offerings like Land Of The Lost and animated Star
Trek. <.html

If you go to Toyzz.com, you will find a list of cheap POTA Medicom

When I first looked I couldn’t recall having these.
However, I have pulled them out of the closet (!) and it

There are many things about the cartoon that I like. As someone mentioned previously, it's great to have three live astronauts for a change. I would have liked to see Judy captured by the apes instead of the
mutants.
General Urko appears to be the main antagonist from the first episode. It is intersting to hear Dr Zaius state that Urko should not wipe out humans because there is no proof they can talk. He also calls Zira and
Cornelius "My children"(if I heard this correctly, my copy is poor). He says this like a term of endearment. So far he is not the Dr Zaius of the movie.
One thought that crossed my mind while watching the cartoon was that there are endless possibilities for fan fiction stories here. We have three astronauts who are separated, apes
with advanced technology(like the book)mutants etc.
Some of the animation is humerous like when the humans are running back and forth in the caves. I didn't think the animation of the apes was that bad.
Nova is more intelligent in this series. She seems to know what is going on and can pronounce names. We learn there was another astronaut.
I found the trek through the desert too long. I was anxious for the astronauts to see the apes.

.htmlI don't know about that Neil.
As you know it is hard work to get a comic made.
Even when you find the right people to approach, it might not be
something they want to risk.
However, if you got the right team together, it would not be impossible
to sell a proposal to someone like the Sci-Fi Channel.
We actually have an author on the group (Shane Johnson) who loves POTA
and has been involved in television projects. Before James made a
bigoted remark about Texans (that they execute handicapped people, I
think?), Shane was also an active participant in this group and I was
hoping to put together a team of writers, get a story, develop a script,
and get Shane to help us put together a professional submission. Kast
time I spoke to Shane he was enthusiastic, but incredibly busy.
I would have asked the Simian Scrolls team to gather statistics re the
TV Show ratings. Why SS and not Terry's Fanzine? Because I know John,
Dave and Alan are (like Neil) particularly TV Show enthusiasts and their
passion would see the project through (hopefully exaggerating the result
in our favour where necessary!).
I would have asked Jeff and Terry to contribute whatever FAVOURABLE
statistics they could find on the POTA2001 movie in order to show that
there is (WAS?) interest in POTA, but interest dropped because the movie
was not what people wanted and it failed to capture the spirit of POTA.
I would have asked Neil to work the story as storyboard sketches, adding
professionalism and value for anyone wanting to green light the project.
And I would have sent it to Mark T-B and asked him to leave it at every
trendy party he went to where influential directors get drunk and
curious, and I would have asked Jeff to show it to the many contacts he
has attack everyone from ALL SIDES!
Of course I would have asked Brian at Apemania to help us out with a
budget estimate and maybe even asked him if there are any mew tricks we
could employ to improve the problems the original makeups struck (time
consumption, jaw flexibility, lip movement, real teeth showing....), but
keeping true to the original LOOK - a look everyone agrees "ain't broke"
(so why fix it?).
The missing ingredient is funding (oh - and the story....I'd be going
for wrapping up the TV Show in a Sci-Fi Channel mini series - say 3 or 4
45 min pieces. AND leaving it open to become a 12-13 episodes per year
Cable TV Show like the Sopranos).
If we went to this trouble, then I believe we would get the funding.
Comments?

Just want to let everyone know that some new files have been added to Hunter's site.
First, hi-res versions of the 2nd series TV cards I created for Kassidy's site are now available for anyone who wants to print up a set of cards for themselves. I've arranged the cards so they match up to
the puzzle backs. Print the fronts, print the backs, paste the sides together and trim using the handy crop marks.
Second, the first issue of the Marvel UK comic series is now available for download in PDF format. The plan is to post an issue each week, to mimic the weekly publication frequency. I'd also hoped to match up
with the original publication dates, but due to a freelance job that was more complicated than I expected, I'm starting a week behind. I'll get two issues done by next week to get in sync with the cover
dates. Each issue will only be available to download for a few weeks to make room as new issues are added.

Hi Mike,
I worked as a designer for Don Post's 3'd facility for about 3 months in 1983.
It was a magical place to be that just wreaked of history.
The studio space myself and the other artists worked at was part of Post's
warehouse storage facility several blocks away from the main factory. the
main factory was huge as they were still manufacturing all of their masks here
in the USA
at the time. Post later downsized and shipped most of it's production
overseas.
I had come aboard shortly after Post's effects team had finished running all of
the pressure suits for Delaurentis' DUNE film, so those molds and suits
peppered the studio where I was. Also, they were storing a lifesize KING
KONG torso That I beleive Jim Danforth had been in charge of constructing.
It was for the 50th anniversary of KING KONG and was used at ceremonies at the
Chinese Theater in Hollywood , where
KONG had premiered back in 1933. The anniversary bust was fitted with
grey hair to reflect KONG's age. It was very cool to walk past that
monstrosity every morning upoan arriving at work.
My duties while at Post varied. I started off doing illustration and
design work for them. Had my own office/drawing room (not bad for a
20 year old kid) but I really wanted to be out where the action was.
They had an artisit out in the lab sculpting heads and figures for the
Universal Studios tour of the A-Team characters. The A-Team was a pretty
popular TV series at the time starring Dirk benedict, Mr. T, and George
Peppard. Those figures were very cool.
They were also prototyping the Gremlins masks, Last Star Fighter, and the
American Werewolf in London
line. The sculpts were all there waiting for final approval before
molding and production. I also vaguely remember Island
Of Dr. Moreau masks as well, but I
could be mistaken.
Once I did get out of the drawing room and into the lab I worked on specialty
projects. Tv commercials, and such. I sculpted, molded, ran parts, and
painted. It was fun. We did some masks for the rock band TOTO's ISOLATION
album cover (which I don't think were ever used). Funny thing too, 8 years
later I wass dating one of the band members ex-wives, but that's a whole other
story...
There were three principle artists working the POST lab; Jim Leonard (who later
went on to running Rick Baker's mold shop for decades), Barry Crane and fine
sculptor and mold maker (who's spent many years at Stan Winston's) and who I
still work with today when he's available, and Jim Negichi (sp) who kinda was
in charge of the lab. I felt like the new kid, and these three grown ups
were my mentors. They'd have clay fights and get into all sorts of
mischeif, but we still got the work done. And great hours too!
7:30Am to 3:30PM with a 1/2 hour lunch
everyday. So when I'd get out of work, I'd still have a whole afternoon
and evening to LIVE! Not like today.
There was always something cool to look at at Post as well. I remember,
the bathrooms were stocked with nothing but old Famous Monsters
magazines. So cool!
Anyway, back to work. Ugh! Gimmeee those
7:30 to 3:30 days of yor!

Hi Mike,
I worked as a
designer for Don Post's 3'd facility for about 3 months in 1983. It was a
magical place to be that just wreaked of history.
The studio space
myself and the other artists worked at was part of Post's warehouse storage

huge as they were still manufacturing all of their masks here in the

at the time. Post later downsized and shipped most of it's production
overseas.

One thing though: the CONQUEST set I have, I don't see a chain around the

That would be
great.
There must
have been a press kit for Return too I think because I know there is a great
B&W Shot of Jeff and Judy (I think) with a really cool Urko background
close-up. Anyone know what I'm talking about here?
Tim, what
other "Return" collectibles do you know of/have?
I have lots of
collectible stiff and I am always facinated to ponder the POTA environment they
fit into.
eg Many of
them have "Battle" related shots.
Some (like
the Chocolate Lillipop) are "Terror on the POTA" related! Yup - this
rarity has a sketch of Alexander the Chimp on it!
But not much
"Return" stuff springs to mind!

Hey everyone,
I'm not going to dictate terms here, but imagine Helen and her kids are reading
these posts (just as an example) and please let's not
degenerate.
I'm only
saying this so Kass does not start getting specific about astronaut
anatomy...the bare chest is enough for me! ;) Kass, PLEASE don't get
anatomically specific!
Also,
speaking of not going backwards, I believe the post last night, where
certain individuals were named and attacked, could be an attempt to stop the
wonderful flow of interesting, on topic posts that we are achieving here in the
past couple of days. Normally when someone attacks on the group, everyone
goes quiet as hell again. Let's not allow one person's attempt to sabotage
to ruin things for the rest of us OK? And let's really rub it in by
continuing to post and not spending any of our valuable time calling people
names.

.html I was reading the Groups Digests and Noticed the Mention of the Old
Marvel Mags. Well I loved the ORIGINAL Comic stories,One I Really
Read repeatedly was the Story of a Human And his Chimp Buddy They
Ended up Staying with an old dude inside a Presidential Bunker
located inside the Head of one of the Mt. Rushmore Presidents. Then
they met up with these Ugly "Mush-Faced" Aliens and their Leaders
(which were Big Brains in Domes)Any of this sound Familiar? I LOVED
these Issues and I've been trying to find them again.Meanwhile Would
ANYONE have a Picture of one of these Aliens? Thanks OH BTW One last
thing- ANBODY EVER seen a Cover of the January 1970 Issue of
Cosmopolitan Magazine? This Issue has a Beautiful Picture of Linda
Harrison I'd PAY JUST TO GET A SCAN OF THIS! Lemmie Know

Maybe break up the responses into pieces in more than one response
since there's a lot of words there.

Well, as far as the make-up goes, John Chambers not only supervised the
makeup he supervised the camera angles as well, at least on the first one.
That's really important on the old style makeup's. You may recall in some
of the sequels there are some very questionable shots. The infamous Now
Fight Like Apes shot from Battle that had to be blurred. They should not
have even been printed, much less end up in a final cut. Though some of
that can be touched up now with all the advances in CGI. It's basically
done frame by frame in a Photoshop type way. Sure you could do it quicker
and cheaper if you shot DV But . . .
If you're going to shoot it like a mini-series it would have to be shot on
film. Though there have been some advances in digital video, the couple
Star Wars were shot on DV, nothing says credible production values like good
film stock. And talking monkeys need all the credibility they can get --
one of the biggest problems with Burton's production.
The script should definitely stay in the realistic realm. The further
you get away from a basis in reality the more credibility you lose. Again,
it's enough to ask your audience to suspend their disbelief on apes that talk
and time travel without introducing the more far out elements such as telepathic
underground mutants or some of the comic book stuff. Keep it a personality
based, character driven plot that examines the serious issue of a society turned
on it's head without trying to preach a message from the mountain.
Sure POTA had some things to say, but it managed to entertain
without really hitting you over the head with them. Some may
disagree, but if Zanuck didn't get them and he was the producer of the thing, I
think you see my point. The TV series seemed heavy handed by comparison,
even with the cartoon. A great film maker once said if you want to send a
message, call Western Union.
As far as working up a budget goes that's the producers job. Every
thing from scouting locations to the catering to the completion bond has to be
figured in. Insurance, transportation, the cost of electricity by kilowatt
hour, even if you're running off generators has to be figured in. It's
best left to someone who knows the game from the inside out. And if you're
going to keep costs down forget LA. Shoot in Vancouver or even
Australia. Canada might be better. You'd still have access to LA
talent without flying them across the world, and don't forget much of your cast
is going to be sending their days buried under foam rubber. They'll need
air conditioning and it's cooler up there. Remember that electric
bill? Well, A/C is as bad as those lights, but if you shoot in winter all
you have to do it turn down the heat. That actually saves you money,
instead of costing you.
I could probably come up with more, but that's enough for now.

Occasionally I'll find an 8 x10 pic but that is all.
Yes, Terror made it's way onto a few items but nothing
for Return. I will post the Return drawings I have
sometime today
