work published professionally but not a lot of comic work apart from
in an Aussie comic a few years ago called Captain Koala
( http://www.koalacomics.com.au/home.htm)
<http://www.koalacomics.com.au/home.htm)> plus currently some
illustrations in a couple of US horror magazines (Black petals & the
Corpse) plus more in upcoming issues.

retell what the art is portraying but complements it - quite a duo
here.

the next chapter up today. I must point out though that 'Beast' was
written by the great Dave Ballard, probably THE current Apes story
teller!

Remember in Beneath the POTA there was mention of 11 gorilla scouts
who disappeared in the Phantom Zone and the 12th returned with his
brain scrambled by mutant interrogation?
-- Speaking of Dave B, he wrote a story called Scouts that was in a
previous issue of Simian Scrolls which was about this very subject!
I illustrated it for him.

.htmlJust wanted to let everyone know that I have had to move some files
from the main site and they can now be found in the files section of
the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
This had to be done to free up space as we had just about reached
our permissible limit as Yahoo does not allot much space to the
groups anymore. As this group is so active we tend to fill up very
quickly and instead of losing these files forever we like to keep a
copy of them, so we had to start a few more groups to store excess
stuff on.
The files moved are:

may be interested. It is an article I wrote a couple of years ago
for the Melbourne Observer about Maxwell Newton and his Newton
Comics publications which included POTA.
The only problem is that it is an Adobe document of the whole
newspaper which is 24 pages long and the article only goes for 3. Do
you or anybody out there know how to edit an Adobe document? I tried
copying and pasting into a Word doucment but the quality was
terrible.

I've heard this score and the main title music is just like ESCAPE!
From FSM.com:
DVD news, not CD news: for fans of the Jerry Goldsmith
/Michael Crichton collaboration who felt that Varese's recent CDs of The Great Train Robbery and Timeline were simply not enough, MGM/UA Home Video has just released PURSUIT on DVD.
Pursuit was Crichton's directorial debut, a 1972 ABC Movie of the Week based on his novel Binary
(written under his pulp pseudonym John Lange), starring Ben Gazzara as a government agent engaged in a cat-and-mouse race-against-time with E.G. Marshall as a wealthy fanatic planning a terrorist attack against the
Republican convention in San Diego. The film is a brisk, unpretentious memento of the glorious early 70s MOWs, which were largely a mixture of sci-fi, horror and thrillers rather than the female-oriented true crime
stories that make up most of the form today, and Goldsmith's twangy suspense score is a fun companion piece to his Escape From the Planet of the Apes.

Also when he says 'the Heston set did okay' and the behind the

questions
Hi Mike,
I worked as a
designer for Don Post's 3'd facility for about 3 months in 1983. It was a
magical place to be that just wreaked of history.
The studio space
myself and the other artists worked at was part of Post's warehouse storage
facility several blocks away from the main factory. the main factory was
huge as they were still manufacturing all of their masks here in the
USA
at the time. Post later downsized and shipped most of it's production
overseas.
I had come aboard shortly after Post's effects team had
finished running all of the pressure suits for Delaurentis' DUNE film, so
those molds and suits peppered the studio where I was. Also, they were
storing a lifesize KING KONG torso That I beleive Jim Danforth had been in
charge of constructing. It was for the 50th anniversary of KING KONG and
was used at ceremonies at the Chinese Theater in
Hollywood , where KONG had
premiered back in 1933. The anniversary bust was fitted with grey hair
to reflect KONG's age. It was very cool to walk past that monstrosity
every morning upoan arriving at work.
My duties while at Post
varied. I started off doing illustration and design work for them.
Had my own office/drawing room (not bad for a 20 year old kid) but
I really wanted to be out where the action was.
They had an artisit out
in the lab sculpting heads and figures for the Universal Studios tour of the
A-Team characters. The A-Team was a pretty popular TV series at the time
starring Dirk benedict, Mr. T, and George Peppard. Those figures were
very cool.
They were also prototyping the Gremlins masks, Last Star
Fighter, and the American Werewolf in
London line. The sculpts
were all there waiting for final approval before molding and production.
I also vaguely remember Island Of
Dr. Moreau masks as well, but I
could be mistaken.
Once I did get out of the drawing room and into the
lab I worked on specialty projects. Tv commercials, and such. I
sculpted, molded, ran parts, and painted. It was fun. We did some
masks for the rock band TOTO's ISOLATION album cover (which I don't think were
ever used). Funny thing too, 8 years later I wass dating one of the band
members ex-wives, but that's a whole other story...
There were three
principle artists working the POST lab; Jim Leonard (who later went on to
running Rick Baker's mold shop for decades), Barry Crane and fine sculptor and
mold maker (who's spent many years at Stan Winston's) and who I still work
with today when he's available, and Jim Negichi (sp) who kinda was in charge
of the lab. I felt like the new kid, and these three grown ups were my
mentors. They'd have clay fights and get into all sorts of mischeif, but
we still got the work done. And great hours too!
7:30Am to 3:30PM with a 1/2 hour lunch
everyday. So when I'd get out of work, I'd still have a whole afternoon
and evening to LIVE! Not like today.
There was always something
cool to look at at Post as well. I remember, the bathrooms were stocked
with nothing but old Famous Monsters magazines. So
cool!
Anyway, back to work. Ugh! Gimmeee those
7:30 to 3:30 days of
yor!

Also, I've been wondering lately.. What was Caesar's childhood like? Growing up with only Armando would have been dificult. Did the other

Yes, maybe the movie stunk, but it was a drool fest for some of
us women. Elaine
What's this? Treating
men as sex objects? Not very PC. I'm all for it, as long as
what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
+++To acknowledge that there was a good-looking man on the screen,
even considering the term 'drool fest' isn't PC? Where'd you

I for one don't have a problem with you saying someone has a
good figure or they're good looking. The problem is when people get
crudely offensive. Use your common sense and forget these labels.

This is funny to me, because since all this it's know that all Chimps are
carnivorous. Gorillas, Orangutans and Bonobos aren't, but ALL Chimps
are. They use twigs to fish for termites, but none of them are above
bashing in a baby baboons skull when they crarve meat.

We're hoping to get out one strip (3 panels normally, but each 4th panel
usually takes up the entire strip) every week or fortnight.
It's a bit like "the Green Mile" in that it is not totally mapped out
and I still don't know precisely how to finish it, but it is
formulaically intended to have a lot of cliff hangers and a story arc or
two that will be revisited.
Sorry 'bout the pace - hopefully soon we'll be doing monthly or
bi-monthly comics that can deliver the WHOLE story in one sitting! I
just need to finish the story about McDonald's ghost.... ;)

.html
.html
The new issue of Tomart's Action Figure
Digest (# 127, Nov. www.tomart.com.htmlnew_afd.html"
)begins what they say is a one year project to tell the story of Mego toys
directly from it's president, Marty Abrams. This isn't just a photo guide
(there's been plenty of good ones), it's a history, including rare pictures from
Abrams. This first issue is about the company's beginnings and doesn't deal with
POTA (though there's pictures of a couple Action Jackson playsets that became
the POTA village and treehouse). The mag comes out monthly so with probably 12
issues or so it's a good bet they will have an issue devoted to POTA (The
Mego part isn't the whole issue, it's about 16 jam-packed pages, packed with
rare photos, ads and product images). But for Mego fans this is a note for those
who want to get in on the ground floor. Back in the late '90's, Abrams said he
was writing a book for Tomart. That never materialized. I don't know why now
it's these series of articles. There's no word if a book will come later (which
would be cheaper than buying 12 issues). But if they decided not to do a book,
this series is a rarity.
The current issue talks about how Mego was
formed and it's early success. In the late '20's two things were developed that
would be the building blocks of Mego: TV and plastic. But the Great Depression
and World War II put them on hold. Afterwards, the post-war "baby boom" would
add a third element, lots of kids who want toys. Marty's father David was a
salesman for Rel Plastics. Mostly they made household items but they also had a
line of Western plastic figures. David also became in charge of marketing these.
He found that by putting the figures in a box and selling them as a set (instead
of just selling them individually at 10 cent stores) he could sell them at
upscale department stores. Thus began his interest in how packaging and image
turned toys into more than just a piece of plastic. David Abrams began to go off
on his own in the toy industry, importing Japanese toy robots and making small
licensing deals. Soon he started his own company, Mego (inspired by Marty's
younger brother Howie's lament when someone in the family was going somewhere,
"Me go too! Me go too!").
Mego began by promoting other
companies cheap toys for 10 cent and hardware stores for about 7 or 8 years.
Then came the two superstars of the toy world, as they still are over 40 years
later. Barbie was introduced by Mattel in 1959 and was a sensation with her
plastic beauty and many outfits. Mego put out their own version, Maddie Mod,
named after Madeline Abrams, David's wife and Marty's mom. She designed the
oufits Maddie wore. Mego was one of the early companies to produce their product
in Hong Kong to save money. In 1964, G.I. Joe arrived, courtesy of Hasbro.
Mego's answer was Fighting Yank. Both Maddie and Yank were successful.
That brings us to Marty, who in 1965 was
graduating from college with a degree in international business marketing. He
planned to go on to a major NY advertising firm. But during a honeymoon/Mego
trip to Asia (his wife Carol was mistaken for Marilyn Monroe by the locals in
Atani, Japan) he found the toy biz fascinating and decided to join the family
enterprise. The Hong Kong situation was really terrible as far as how employees
were treated, working conditions, etc. so David and Madeline moved there to
supervise and Marty stayed in the U.S. as Mego's president.
Marty put his marketing expertise to work,
checking out the current popular lines, such as Johnny West and Captain Action
(an early license-driven action figure). At the time the Jets had won Super Bowl
III and Joe Namath was a media darling. Marty decided to do a Joe Namath figure
and that became Mego's first licensed property. At that time "licensing toys"
was a very under-developed business. Now it's a major industry (probably thanks
to Mego's innovations) but back then it was just Disney and the Licensing
Corporation of America (which represented Warner Bros. and DC comics). Other
than that, it was just a matter of knocking on doors of the people who owned a
property you wanted to license. Marty got the rights to a Joe Namath action
figure. Ironically, as it was appearing on shelves, Namath got injured during
the first pre-game and was out the whole season! The toy bombed, and Marty
decided never to place so much emphasis on a toy based on a real person (though
Mego would have their share of celebrity toys).
Also while doing the Namath figure, Marty
saw the advantage of smaller figures. He decided to scale down to a 8" figure
(1970), which would become the Mego staple. The first brand Mego put out in this
size was Action Jackson, who would eventually become the company's figurehead.
They also did a female figure, Dinah-mite, who would become the company's
leading lady. But at this early stage Jackson wasn't very successful and Dinah
got delayed until '73. Instead, destiny knocked. Stan Weston, a toy pioneer,
suggested they take the Mego 8" body and create licensed toys based on popular
characters (Stan's original suggestion was Dick Tracy). Capt. Action had dabbled
in licenses like Spiderman and Green Hornet (as costumes the Captain could wear)
but Mego began the idea of cranking out cheap (but beloved) licensed figures on
a grand scale. Their first endeavor was the "World's Greatest Super Heroes" and
Mego got licensing for both D.C. and Marvel comic book characters. They had the
rights to Superman and Batman, as well as Spiderman and the Hulk. Such rights
would be a toy company's dream today but would be impossible now; licensing is
now a huge industry and the superstar characters cost a fortune. The number of
licensed properties Mego had in the 70's is astounding and of course among them
were the first ever POTA figures, considered one of the company's cornerstones.
Next issue covers the superheroes and Mego's rise to becoming THE toy company of
the Me Decade.
The issue of Tomart also shows the latest
offerings form Figures Toy Co., which has taken the idea of Mego nostalgia and
ran with it. People have asked why, considering the popularity of Megos as
collectibles, someone doesn't take the Mego brand back into production. Abrams
says the Mego name is taken. But Figures has started a series of figures that
are dead on in all but name. They have to be seen to be believed, both in
packaging and in the look of the figures. So far they've brought to market
Mego's own brands (World's Greatest Monsters), licenses that Mego did ("Happy
Days, Space:1999) and '70's properties Mego never got around to (Brady Bunch,
the Munsters). They are quality work for a fair price of around $ 15 each. I'd
love for them to do the old Mego POTA figures for fans who can't afford
collector's prices, and maybe new POTA characters Mego never did. Figures says
their main focus is old TV shows (of which POTA had one). In any case I'm
interested in where Figures will take these and how successful they'll be. You
can check out their stuff at www.classictvtoys.com (the Brady
Bunch ones are hilarious).
This post has been long, but in short it's
an interesting time for Mego enthusiasts. - - - Jeff

Seriously though, you've raised some good points here. I've always
thought it would be virtually impossible for Armando to keep a
talking Caesar secret from the other circus people. At the very
least a few must have known about him.
A lot of Armando's human qualities must have had an effect on his
upbringing too.

Blade: Trinity writer/director David Goyer told SCI FI
Wire that his proposed remake and update of the
classic 1973 SF movie Soylent Green will pick up where
the original film left off: with the well-known
revelation that "Soylent Green is people!" "I will say
that the reveal at the end of the first movie happened
at the end of our first act," Goyer said in an
interview. "So the first movie is kind of the first
act of our film, and then it's about what happens
afterwards."
The first movie, set in a dystopian future, centers on
a cop (Charlton Heston) who investigates a murder,
leading to the gruesome discovery about the principal
food source of the overburdened population. The film's
surprise ending is by now familiar to audiences, "of
course, which is why you can't have that be the punch
line anymore," Goyer said.
Goyer added that he won't write or direct the remake,
but will instead act as producer under his just-signed
one-year first-look deal with Warner Brothers. Goyer
also wrote the script for the upcoming Batman Begins
for Warner, which Christopher Nolan is directing.
Blade: Trinity, the third movie in the vampire
franchise, is being released by Warner's sister
company, New Line, on Dec. 8.

I agree, someone needs to write about this. It would be really interesting to see how his childhood was. Maybe it would give us a little background on
why he acted the way he did in Conquest and Battle. Kasey --- "Neil" <nfoster@...> wrote:

Well, you see, the people mourned the death of Cornelius, Zira and
the baby. They had become celebrities. Circuses thrived in the wake
of their deaths. For that reason, Armando did very well. He
purchased a female chimp on the black market to replace Salome and
draw attention away from the male that took her place. As Milo grew,
he became a superstar "actor" and an excellent horseman. The
female chimp that Armando had added to his circus grew up alongside
Milo and at 15 years old they were given to each other in the first
known simian "marriage."
Surprisingly, Milo's mate, Salome, was learning to speak. Although
not as clearly or with as large a vocabulary as Milo, she was able to
communicate with him using gestures and short verbalizations. When
they had a child, it was obvious very early on that he would be more
intelligent than the other Apes in the circus. Armando, wanting very
much to continue his success, capitalized on this young Ape's
abilities. This was a big mistake.
At the same time, back at the ranch, government officials were
dealing with their own problems. Some years before, a plague has
virtually wiped out the domestic animal populations. Dogs and cats
were least resistant to this plague, although scientists could not
determine why. People were left without the comfort of their pets.
The effect of that loss profoundly affected the people. They became
irritable and short tempered. Small social groups (gangs) formed
within communities and feuds were commonplace. Lawlessness
prevailed and, world-wide, governments invoked martial law.
In America, where the celebrity chimp family had made such a profound
impression, people had already been bringing home apes as pets. At
first, they were captivated by their cute antics, but soon they tired
of the incredible amount of work and money that was involved to keep
their apes as pets.
Now, do you want "the rest of the story?" <.html

inappropiate or contrary to ape religion is not accepted. If it is a science academy I assume it includes the biological sciences as well. Do any of the apes feel that humans are treated unethically(outside of
