Would any one be able to come up with a list of the 'easter eggs' on ANY / ALL of the POTA releases and how to get to them? (yes even the 2001 re-imagining!) If so that would be really great.

I just think someone's been reading The Big Book of Science Fiction Cliches.
It doesn't matter what it's an academy of, as long as you mention "the
academy" somewhere in your story. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed
that every sci-fi TV series ever made will have at least one "he was my
mentor/teacher/hero back at the academy" plot in an episode?

.htmlIt's clear that Cornelius, Zira, and the baby were pop icons, at
least. You know that people FLOCKED to the circuses and zoos to see
the chimpanzees! Armando did great for quite a while, you know. It
was only after the masses had taken in chimps as house pets that they
became disillusioned.
It's really just a theory, but you know it's pretty likely true. ;)

Here's a question . . .
What do you think the government told the public after Zira and Cornelius'
death? No doubt they didn't say, "We had a rogue scientist the killed them
because he believed their existence would lead to the end of the world."
Or maybe they did. Thoughts anyone? <.html

.htmlOK. Let's say that LT is right, and no one knew about the baby.
Still, I believe Cornelius and Zira were very popular and those who
loved them were stunned by their disappearance.
And, as LT stated, we know that at the time that Armando took Caesar
to Central City the circuses that remained were failing. That is why
he took Caesar... to drum up more business. His own circus had been
doing poorly "for months" before that ape-pearance.
So, shall I continue with my theory?

I like the disease hypothesis best.
Though an accident is plausible,
look what happened to Princess

built in deniability. <.html

-- Good question! Knowing all the wonderful governments that we have
around the world they would have made up some story that made the
chimps look like the bad guys, it's always their natural reaction to
protect their own arses and make themselves look good isn't it? So
maybe they would have just gone with the 'we have evidence that
intelligent apes will one day dominate and then destroy the earth'
line.
I also wonder what happened to Lewis and Stevie? They knew
everything didn't they, would they have been killed in a mysterious
accident? Strangled by an angry gorilla maybe? ;-)

I concede the baby thing. And I don't mind knowing about the other
holes, so this is good. But...
I have a theory... <.html

.htmlAs previously stated, I have this theory...
I think that Milo (aka Caesar) grew up well-hidden in amongst his
circus family. I believe that Armando did provide for Caesar,
though, and that he was given a mate in the circus -- much as Nova
was "given to" Taylor. They gave birth to a son. That son was
intelligent, big, and strong. The government wanted this incredibly
brilliant young chimp for...
Then I wrote:
The people mourned the death of Cornelius and Zira. They had become
celebrities. Circuses thrived in the wake of their deaths. For that
reason, Armando did very well. He purchased a female chimp on the
black market to replace Salome and draw attention away from the male
that took her place. As Milo grew, he became a superstar "actor" –
and an excellent horseman. The female chimp that Armando had added
to his circus grew up alongside Milo and at 10 years old they were
given to each other in the first known simian "marriage."
Surprisingly, Milo's mate, Salome, was learning to speak. Although
not as clearly or with as large a vocabulary as Milo, she was able to
communicate with him using gestures and short verbalizations. When
they had a child, it was obvious very early on that he would be more
intelligent than the other Apes in the circus. Armando, wanting very
much to continue his success, capitalized on this young Ape's
abilities. This was a big mistake.
At the same time, back at the ranch, the government officials were
dealing with their own problems. A plague has virtually wiped out
the domestic animal populations some years before. Dogs and cats
were least resistant to this plague, although scientists could not
determine why. People were left without the comfort of their pets.
The effect of that loss profoundly affected the people. They became
irritable and short tempered. Small social groups (gangs) formed
within communities and feuds were commonplace. Lawlessness
prevailed and, world-wide, governments invoked martial law.
In America, where the celebrity chimp family had made such a profound
impression, people had already been bringing home apes as pets. At
first, they were captivated by their cute antics, but soon they tired
of the incredible amount of work that it was to keep their apes as
pets. They began to use harsh methods to train them, and found them
to be fast learners.
Caesar and Salome soon gave birth to their first baby, a boy. They
named him Milo (the secret name of his father), meaning "soldier."
He was strong and handsome, clearly a fine specimen of a chimpanzee.
He learned quickly and promised to breathe new life into Armando's
Circus. Armando realized that with apes being commonplace in most
homes, he would have to have something very special to draw the
crowds. Baby Milo would be the ticket. At just months old, he was
able to follow very specific directions. He could work the audience,
cute little kid.
Yes, Baby Milo did draw attentionÂ… the attention of curious
government agencies. Over the course of the years, science had tried
to make a better chimp. Selective breeding, genetic engineering.
Some said that DNA from the Ape fugitives from the future had been
collected and cloned. But, no one offered evidence. And now, at
least according to the handbills, this particular baby chimp seemed
almost, well, human. That was Armando's first mistake.
It was clear to many that Little Milo was special.
When Caesar and Salome were ready to welcome their second child into
the world, something went tragically wrong. Salome died during the
birth of their second child, a boy. Caesar named him Aldo,
meaning "wise."
Aldo wasn't the shining star that Milo was, yet he was still very
clever. More reserved in nature, he was happy just to play in the
big top and feed the other animals. Occasionally he could be found
dashing about teasing the wild cats or walking between the legs of
the elephants. He was especially close to Milo, though, maybe
because of the loss of his mother. Often he would ride with Milo on
Milo's motorcycles and four-wheelers around the tents. Or he
would "help" Milo as he cleaned animal dung off-season with the skid-
steer or set fence posts with the auger. The two were inseparable.

If you watch
Taylor’s
romp through the city in Planet, during the funeral you will see on the right
(inside the church) a HOODED ape (I think a chimp – not sure).
Does anyone know if this is a chimp or gorilla, male or
female?
I always thought it was the wife and the hood was for mourning, but if it is a
chimp that makes it cross breeding!
Any ideas on this?

Notice Zaius brings up a diagram of the human brain?
Not sure what books he's looking to buy or where he plans to take a
trip to (by plane, train, or boat), but he's got instant messages
from Zira and Cornelius, and he's going to log into the "Ape City
Bank" website.
Cool commercial.

Whie we're on the subject of backstoy speculation, I don't think you could
get a two hour movie out of it, but the story that interests me is what happened
after Taylor rode off. I know that he tried to teach Nova to talk and got
captured by mutants. But what happened to Zira and Cornelius? I'm
guessing that they and Zaius became closer than ever after they're trial, if
there even was one. Chances are there wasn't because of the publicity it
might cause. But judging my his demeanor at their house, I think a deal
was made behind closed doors, that they would retain their standing with the
academy in exchange for their silence about the 'Terrible Secret' and doing no
more research in that area. Dr. Milo on the other hand slipped under their
radar. And because of his relationship with Z & C he knew what they'd
been up to and visa versa. So when he finished salvaging and restoring the
ship and war broke out, they were on the flight. Make a good
mini-movie.

Here’s Brian’s response:
Anyone else care to speculate on the
species (chimp or gorilla) and gender of the hooded ape?
And WHY this ape wore a hood – did any
others in the funeral crowd?

It's long since been speculated that
that is the widow, of which who's son point's out Taylor during the ceremony.
No one (that I know of) has ever talked to anyone involved in the production
and asked them directly about whether or not
there was a female gorilla in the funeral scene.
A female gorilla outfit was made though. It looks just like Zira's only
it's purple and has no leather "yoke", just a leather glyph and the
two buckles (like Zira's first costume did, although the decision was made to
remove the buckles from Zira's tunic before filming began.)
Someone on one of these chat groups had isolated the hooded mourner frames
onetime, and it was pretty much a female chimp if I remember correctly.
There was a female gorilla in BENEATH, and there are tons of behind the scenes
fotos of her getting made up and horsing around on set.
She could have been one of the horse
wranglers or stuntwoman, which makes sense, but she also could have been some
vip's girlfriend just doing it for kicks. To date, I don't have any info on who she was/is.

I always thought it was the wife and the hood was for mourning, but if it is a

I've always thought Paul Dehn's "plague on dogs and cats" story was a little silly. It wasn't in the Boulle novel and one of the great things about the original film was that it left it a
mystery as to just how earth became the planet of the apes. I think that was the best thing to do, given that the premise is just shy of absurd. It's unfortunate, at least for myself, that the sequels
tried to explain too much.
Whenever I try to imagine an extrapolation on how the planet of the apes began I always run into this brick wall -- just why would mankind genetically manipulate apes to be more intelligent and articulate and why would
they take them into their homes? I can't come up with a logical reason as to why man would do something so dumb as that. I'm sure most of you have seen apes in real life. I love apes, but I
wouldn't want to be in the same room with an adult ape. Not without bars between it and me.
Any literal explanation as to how apes became household pets and then slaves takes an incredible suspension of disbelief. One of the brilliant things about the Boulle novel is that as you read it you discover that
Boulle is really playing a trick on you. The book isn't about a distant planet and some incredible reversal of things, it's really a comment on this planet right here and the way we are and how we've
treat each other and other animals.

.htmlI was reading today how orangs could be gone altogether IN THE WILD in
10 years.
Can you imagine?
How could we allow it?
But with the appropriate DNA and laboratory breeding, we could keep them
alive in captivity - even if they do volunteer to breed.
And, being human, I can see us then trying to make the critters work for
their survival.
It WOULD make more sense though to write the story based around humans
desiring the apes as a giant "remote control" that follows instructions
and leaves humans more time to.....well, sit on the net and chat to
people thousands of miles away, for example!
That would also facilitate the incorporation of Boulle's explanation -
that humans became lazier and more dependent on entertainment and
technology so they devolved eventually (but sure - the time it took is a
bit suss!!!!).
So that's where I would start in a pre-PLANET story. Cats and Dogs
disappear (via the plague). Apes had already become extinct in the
wild, and had moved into zoos and some zoo staff were helping to
kick-start the re-introduction of each species, so they cultivate as
many apes as they can.
They start wanting to get the maximum out of their pets so while they
are already playing God by repopulating the earth with them, they start
trying to iron out any little problem the apes have and use advanced
genetic manipulation techniques to make them smarter. I mean why not?
"God made man in his own image" ; "Proteus made the ape in his image"
(loose translation there - why wouldn't humans try to make apes in THEIR
image? More human-like; more upright; larger (the chimps anyway) and we
all know humans LOVE talking apes - why not genetically alter them to
enhance their marketability?
It isn't really SUCH a stretch is it Rory?

prominent in that article, if I remember. I will try to dig it up.
"Proteus made the ape in his image" -- Man! That could be used to
describe a lot! Who was Proteus? Ape? or Human? Ah ha! See?
Genetic engineering? Harsh training? In what ways do we try to make
our little human offspring (aka children) in our image???
That would also facilitate the incorporation of Boulle's explanation -
that humans became lazier and more dependent on entertainment and
technology so they devolved eventually. I don't know about you all,
but this is happening in my little world as I type. Literally.

What was the purpose of Milo in the movie? Who was he? What were
his credentials? When did he first show up? How could he know about
aerospace technology? How did he know Z&C? What made them trust him
enough to get aboard the ship? What would have caused him to WANT to
leave the POTA, even briefly, and what would have been compelling
enough to get C&Z on the spaceship? They couldn't have known the
world was about to be destroyed. So, what inspired their departure?
Those questions would/could/might be answered in T's backstory.
But does anyone have any thoughts?

Patrick's mothership theory isn't bad, actually. And I know how
protective he is of it. It works. (Just that it isn't MY theory --
which will ever and forever work for me.)
I saw The Incredibles last night. Now, my son, 10, who has read two
versions of the book and watched the commercials, explained the movie
to me when I got home. He knew in his mind exactly what had
happened, and he told me why it could happen, and he had a deeper
insite into the movie -- not having seen it -- than I did. But, a
lot of what he threw out there was theory. Yet, his theory worked,
and he will go to the movie with that set in his mind and that will
enhance the story for him. His way. Or, disprove his theory, which
is okay, too.

So far it looks like the survival of all the apes is going to depend on sanctuaries. Fortunately, most people understand they have to be replicas of. the apes' natural habitat.
When I visited the sanctuary in Washington, I immediately became attached to the chimps and am even thinking of going back for another visit. It is hard not to try to take one home but knowing that the best thing
for them, is to be with other chimps and have a stimulating environment. I too would love a pet chimp but I know it is not the right thing to do. Elaine <.html <.html

.html Is there any interest in a 2005 POTA calendar?
Last year I made a POTA calendar for myself for 2004
and was planning on making a 2005 calendar soon (I hope).
The calendar is:
month by month
half picture, half calendar per page
about 6 inches high by 4 inches wide
International!! (which means it doesn't have any
significant dates or holidays on it).
Has a couple lines on the bottom for notes.
The day boxes are big enough for a very small note.
It could have a cover page to make it look more "official"
if someone wants to do that.
The calendar would be in a Word document that you
would have to print out, cut out, and assemble.
I put a magnet on the back so I can hang it at work -
would be good for a refrigerator, too. There's room
on the top for a hole-punch so it can be hung, too.
The quality of the calendar would depend on your printer
and paper you use.
Images. I would like some input on the images
to use for the calendar and whether to stick to the
movies, TV, cartoon, comics (including, of course, Neil's
kick-ass artwork) or just mix them up (that's what I did
last year).
So, any interest? Thoughts on the theme?

Yeah, I'll have to do some digging for the Kim Hunter shot.
It 's a publicity foto that shows Kim in street clothes and Kim as Zira in
the buckle front tunic, both images on the same picture. Remind me in a

As for
the Female Gorilla, here it be some pix...

It's long since been
speculated that that is the widow, of which who's son point's out
Taylor during the ceremony.
No one (that I know of)
has ever talked to anyone involved in the production and asked them directly about whether or not there
was a female gorilla in the funeral scene.
A female gorilla outfit was made though.
It looks just like Zira's only it's purple and has no leather "yoke",
just a leather glyph and the two buckles (like Zira's first costume did,
although the decision was made to remove the buckles from Zira's tunic before
filming began.)
Someone on one of these chat groups had isolated the
hooded mourner frames onetime, and it was pretty much a female chimp if I
remember correctly.
There
was a female gorilla in BENEATH, and there are tons of behind the scenes fotos
of her getting made up and horsing around on set. She could have been one of the horse wranglers or
stuntwoman, which makes sense, but she also could have been some vip's
girlfriend just doing it for kicks. To date, I don't have any info on who she
was/is.

If you watch
Taylor ’s romp through the city in
Planet, during the funeral you will see on the right (inside the church) a
HOODED ape (I think a chimp – not
sure).
Does anyone know if this is a
chimp or gorilla, male or female?
I always thought it was the wife and
the hood was for mourning, but if it is a chimp that makes it cross
breeding!

responses from Brian....
Hey, I
think this looks like a CHIMP - the snout in particular.
I have
another speculation - maybe it IS a female gorilla, and since it would be the
ONLY one we see (or am I wrong - do we see another?) maybe they tried to make
her look to have a different snout?
I don't know - ideas?
Comments?
Michael
Reviewing the frame grab again, the face looks like a female
chimp, that maybe I SAY MAYBE, they painted with gorilla colors.
Just an assumption
on my part.

For those who do get embedded pics I've tried to
clean it up a bit, but screen captures can be very
grainy. The nose is very chimp like. Though the
muzzle does seem pronounced, but her coloring
is awfully light for a gorilla. I think they had to
make compromises to make her identifiably female.
Probably a big reason why we don't see females from
the other ape species, at least not until Conquest.

Yeah, Michael. Those of us who come to the DG through the Yahoo Groups
site don't get the picture. Please post that in the photos files for us
to see. Thanks.
For those who do get embedded pics I've tried to clean it up a bit, but

Though the muzzle does seem pronounced, but her coloring is awfully
light for a gorilla. I think they had to make compromises to make her
identifiably female.Probably a big reason why we don't see females from
the other ape species, at least not until Conquest. <.html

I do believe that was her then. I doubt there was ever more than one.
Posibly. There aren't any dates mentioned or anything,
but it sounds like her from the article I found on the net. Different
spelling though . . .Viki. <.html
