That is the coolest disclaimer I've ever read.

I'm sure everyone knows that there's a link to the story of the
process of making Dave Ballard's Icarus model:

http://www.goingfaster.com/icarus/andrewsicarus.html"

And now I know, too. Good story, great pics, too!

Actually I've got t!!

HAAA HAAAA!!!

It's really not a character anyone's really seen yet... but it does have
to do with the movie... it's the husband of the mourning chimp
everyone's been yapping about!! Finally a back story for insignificant
side role! To boot the good doctor is actualy the first serial
psychokiller and this young chimp is just another notch on his belt!!
Ohhhhhh the horror's in Mike and Niel's minds... the horrors.

Other than this PERFECT guess of mine.. I rock!

Detective Plonowski,

That was really good deductive reasoning, but I hope you're wrong.
If you're right, then you just ruined the story! But if you're
right, that would be cool. Wagers, anyone?

The costume is definetly a test ,or prototype one.I have seen pix of it before, with earlier versions of test makeups etc,i think ,if i remember correctly the test shots were more to check coloring with the orang costume orange with how it would show up on film next to the coloring of the orang makeups. From pix you can see its not really a complete costume.
In a earlier email someone stated they had seen it before ,it was one of the cards in the last planet of the ape trading cards sets not from the original  set.     goapebilly

This is definitely a costume test shot. I have seen it before. On

Actually it is in the original 1967 set. It is card #33. I have also
uploaded a picture of this to the Misc. folder in the photos section.
Surprisingly it is the picture called: card 33 ;-)

Apes test Orang make-up  with  Wardrobe fabric choices for color camera tests.

Looks like they were testng the pumpkin. browns, and leather colors.

Ever wonder why the gorillas leathers are a gunmetal/purply color?

Camera tests proved that it was a better color than black.

    OK - Let's have a competition.

First Prize - an original Animation Cel from the "Return" series - with original PAINTED BACKGROUND!

Second Prize - full set of medicom figures (including "Dark Cornelius") and Kubricks.

Third Prize - Mego in Repro Box.

Weekly Prizes - Ash Can edition printed FULL VERSIONS of BEWARE THE BEAST - these are the ones that include 7 pages NOT SEEN ON THE INTERNET VERSION, with 2 pages of production art and a teaser for the new story set in the TV Show environment, starring our favourite trio, written by Dave Ballard, Illustrated by Neil Foster.

First, take 20 minutes to WATCH THE PILOT EPISODE!

If you can't do this, contact me for a free copy.

To register in the competition, send a post about the appropriate episode to the DG.  No Rory, "It Sux" does not count!  ;)

    NOW - GO AND WATCH!

And don't be mistaken, this is a shameless recruiting move to get people to join the POTADG, and to try to get people talking about Planet of the Apes again.  It is also a great way to generate discussion about the much neglected Cartoon Series.

.html.html You guys have short memories.  I've brought this up before.  This is an early wardrobe and makeup test.  You can see the Asia actor as the orangutan in the POTA featurette during a similar session.  If you freeze-frame him in the featurette you'll see him as the orangutan, wearing glasses and the date as 4/12/67, and the actors name as Joe Wong.  Here's a link to info on him at the Internet Movie Database:  http://imdb.com/name/nm0939150/

Says he died in 1978 of a heart condition and was from the Philippines.

Anyway, I hope this solves the mystery for you all.

    Fair enough then.

However, I'll allow everyone who wants to put forth something on the

We'll pick up steam again in January.

Hunter is working on this and still expects to have them done by the time the current TV series contest is over next month. I'll be able to help with distribution, and I recall there were others who offered to help as well, so I expect we'll have copies to everyone who wants them in January.

    Subject: More Icarus (size/landing)
    .html
    While looking at this site:
    http://www.goingfaster.com/icarus/virdonopening.html"

It mentions that the ship is much smaller than Taylor's ship. Did
everyone already know this? Actually, just shorter. It looks like
they took off the rear section at the seam (stripes) of the original
ship, then put a new rear end on it. Why do I have the feeling that
the answer to this is "well, duh?"

Also, this site suggests that the ship had a controlled landing.
That doesn't mean it was supposed to land like that, does it? Unless
they mean "attempted controlled emergency landing", but this can't be
the way the ship is supposed to land, especially when it ends up
    killing one of the astronauts!

What's the general speculation on this? Is it that Burke was
piloting when something went wrong (landing gear, thrusters, etc),
tried to land it the best he could, they got banged around when it
hit the ground and ended up killing Jones?

Jeff is trying to get a checklist of all the Jun Planning POTA2001

And if there is only one POTA2001 collectible I would WANT in my

Yeah I think it's a bad idea.  Maybe he needs the money,
but he should wait for the economy to pick up more after
the first of the year.  Not only that but everyone will be
spending all their disposable income on Christmas
presents, so unless they're buying them for someone
else's, which is unlikely, he's not going to get top bids.
That and it's just uncool.  His wife must have put her

It mentions that the ship is much smaller than Taylor's ship. Did
everyone already know this? Actually, just shorter. It looks like
they took off the rear section at the seam (stripes) of the original
ship, then put a new rear end on it.

-- John for my take on this I will refer you to Beware the Beast.
In the comic I had the spaceship blasting off and then when free of
the Earth's gravity I had the rear rocket section detach just
leaving the shorter capsule part for re-entry, much like the Apollo
    rockets NASA used.

I based all this on the wreckage of Brent's ship. A rear rocket
section can clearly be seen (though mostly destroyed) with what
looks like 3 landing legs. Also if you notice in Beneath there is
only a single blast mark on the ground, not a skid mark / trench
like in the TV show, which suggested to me that it was a craft that
landed straight up, ready to blast off.

Neil, I agree with your take on the functionality of the craft based
on what is seen in Beneath, it all makes sense, and you've filled in
some blanks for me. Which raises another question - how does the
craft land then, after separating with the rocket AND landing gear?
    Splashdown only?

Still, the Virdon craft was shorter than the detached Taylor ship...
actually, the ship in Escape is as short as the one in the TV
series - without the hibernation chambers.

Also, why doesn't the TV craft have the rocket and landing gear to
get back to space - maybe part of the malfunction?

Kinda funny, since I was taking another look at 'Beast' on Hunter's
site, that background music has been playing for the last half
    hour. Perfect.

I don't know why but I am having more fun doing this than I did
doing Beast, maybe it is because there is more emphasis on dialog
and characters interacting and not just endless chase / action
scenes. It could also be because I don't have to draw all those
detailed bloody spaceship interiors as well ;-)

As far as what I put in the frames Michael pretty much leaves it up
to me. He supplies the dialog and a couple of pointers and lets me
get on with it. I think I have even surprised him a few times when
he has seen the completed strip!

The glyph looks way cool - nice touch Neil.

I'll look forward to reading Neil's response, but until then allow me to
    give some insight!

The first 8 chapters were written in a way where I tried to be very
specific about everything. However, when I saw what Neil had done it
just looked SO much BETTER! So now I am FAR more BROAD!

I am trying to write as I think Serling would have and like I think most
of the POTA movie writers would have - I am trying to achieve a dramatic
twist, conclusion, revelation or whatever and I share with Neil what I
am trying to get across and why. Often that's enough and off he goes!

We do a lot of thinking and brainstorming before Neil puts pen to paper.

I think Neil would agree that I do MOST of the planning for the SCRIPT.
And the idea of THIS strip was it would be easier for Neil - less
detail, less planning, less hassles, less time. NOT THAT I CAN REALLY
TELL - IT STILL LOOKS AS GOOD AS BTB TO ME, JUST DIFFERENT (like
    Angelina Jolie and Gwenyth Paltrow!).

    Anyway - enough from me....NEIL?

The computer was okay (from what was shown) until the apes ripped it
apart, then blew it up. The astronauts seemed to think that they
could get back to space with the spacecraft they 'landed' in.

Here's a clip from this article about intermixing human cells and
    animal cells:
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6534243/

    It's a very interesting read.

    John O.

Imagine, said Robert Streiffer, a professor of philosophy and
bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, a human-chimpanzee chimera
endowed with speech and an enhanced potential to learn — what some
    have called a "humanzee."

"There's a knee-jerk reaction that enhancing the moral status of an
animal is bad," Streiffer said. "But if you did it, and you gave it
the protections it deserves, how could the animal complain?"

Unfortunately, said Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel,
speaking last fall at a meeting of the President's Council on
    Bioethics, such protections are unlikely.

"Chances are we would make them perform menial jobs or dangerous
jobs," Sandel said. "That would be an objection."

    A research breakthrough
The potential power of chimeras as research tools became clear about
a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments by Evan Balaban, now
at McGill University in Montreal. Balaban took small sections of
brain from developing quails and transplanted them into the
    developing brains of chickens.

The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to
quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain contained
the neural circuitry for quail calls. It also offered astonishing
proof that complex behaviors could be transferred across species.

No one has proposed similar experiments between, say, humans and
apes. But the discovery of human embryonic stem cells in 1998 allowed
researchers to envision related experiments that might reveal a lot
    about how embryos grow.

clicking on the menu at top of the images.

We have recently started a new comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET

you can just click on the handy links on the Home Page to view the
    latest and previous chapters!

Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.

First up there is the DG Archives group:

This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. we have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
    anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and
    year .

There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in

    Finally there's the Photos group:

All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's

at McGill University in Montreal.

"There's a knee-jerk reaction that enhancing the moral status of an animal is bad," Streiffer said. "But if you did it, and you gave it the protections it deserves, how could the animal complain?" >>

Whadayakiddin'me?  My ex-wife never needed a reason to complain!

<<Unfortunately, said Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, speaking last fall at a meeting of the President's Council on Bioethics, such protections are unlikely. "Chances are we would make them perform menial jobs or dangerous jobs," Sandel said. "That would be an objection.">>

Sounds like Conquest to me.   I have no objections to the cute anthropomorphs you see in cartoons, but they'd probably would be more like Dr. Moreau monsters.  Think about it.  I'm sure if you saw a girl with purple hair and eyes the size of saucers, she wouldn't look nearly as cute in real life.  She'd just look freaky.  If the mice REALLY started talking to Cinderella, she'd give them the broom.  It something that would take a lot of getting used to.

OK - I get myself in trouble when I answer this question because:

    (1) people who like POTA2001 get offended by what I say; and

    (2) people have a strange conception that collectors are not allowed to
ever get to the point where they might want to/have to sell their
collection (hey, this includes ME - see comments re Chris Sauseville!).

    However:

The price of POTA collectibles has dropped in a huge way since POTA
    2001.

Collectors were convinced that, if POTA2001 was successful and brought
back the POPULARITY and DESIRABILITY of POTA, their items would be IN
MORE DEMAND and therefore worth MORE. The reverse is also true and
therefore it is assumed these collectibles are a BUYER'S market - I have
to say this has recently been my experience! It also helps that some
collectors now feel their high end stuff is not popular.

Anyway - all due respect to those who LIKE POTA2001, but the fact that
it was NOT overly popular and its' toys did not sell did INDEED
    influence the wider market.

That does NOT mean YOU should like it any LESS!!

I have tried to like it less, but it is impossible! ;)

    Hunter,

I'm sure it will be worth the wait and I thank you for the hard work I
    know you put in!

As Hunter said, his part is done.

Hunter will be distributing these to people who will then further
distribute them, do please don't bombard Hunter with requests but wait
instead until he has had time to distribute them to the distributors,
and the distributors have had time to burn copies.

Oh - and feel free to remind Hunter he ROCKS too! ;)

I suspect what happened was this: in *anticipation* of the POTA market
increasing when POTA2001 came out, prices for older POTA merchandise
shot up higher ("With the new interest, I'm sure this X that I buy
will be worth more later!"). When the movie didn't do as well, people
found that that anticipated market never appeared, and prices have
gone down as a result. I don't think it's right to blame POTA2001
itself, but rather the sellers and buyers who expected renewed
interest (and willingness to pay more) because the new movie was
coming. I've been eBaying since '98 or '99, and most of my first
purchases were Apes items. I watched the auctions steadily increase
in starting bids and ending prices as the new movie approached.
Carded Megos that sold for $80 in '99 sold for $130 or more in 2001.
Now we're seeing the downside of that, and prices are going back to
    more reasonable levels, in general.

    Not quite Elaine.

If POTA2001 was POPULAR, it would have increased demand.

    It didn't.

If Pina Coladas are made popular by a movie, and an ingredient is
apples, then you could say "cocktails" increased the demand for
    apples...know what I mean?

However if people stockpiled apples in anticipation of the movie's
release (and paid lots of money for them) then the movie was not
popular, then the apple hoarders get stuck eating their apples (or
decorating their houses with them) instead of selling them at a profit -
or even just saying "I have apples worth $50,000".

    Anyway, feel free to disagree.

I agree that would CERTAINLY play a part too Elaine.

What I am saying is, if you look around you will find evidence that Star
Wars merchandise became more popular leading up to the release of
Episode 1. It was the talk of the town again and people who had not
thought about it since their childhood started thinking "I want my R2-D2
    action figure!".

So they paid incredible prices and the prices went UP as MORE people
    wanted them.

With the general disappointment following the 2 new SW movies, things
went back to normal very quickly. But that's SW, and it has a HUGE
population of die hard fans. POTA does not.

Same happened with Spiderman but the SUCCESS of that movie has pushed
high end prices UP. To get the #1 comic, you now pay EVEN MORE! Why?
Because, due to the release of the 2 new movies, you won't just get
blank looks when you say "I have the #1 comic!" - you'll get
acknowledgement. But eventually that might well change AGAIN!

Having a Mego takes on a new dimension when there are millions of
fringe-dweller fans beating down the door to have one too!
