At first, I saw this strip of "just" Ursus sitting there reading the
scroll, but when the strip is done and it is read from the
beginning, I think this pause will be very effective in the story.
And... I speculate that in the next strip someone will say
something ;) and the location in the story will have changed -
perhaps back to the chimps. Of course that's speculation on the
flow, not the story.

something i dont think has been addressed:
an "r" rating does not necessarily mean that the movie is "adult"
and likewise, the g rating does not always mean that the movie is childish
consider the difference between the first adn last apes movies

Isn't DVD wonderful?
HD-TV is so natural it almost
looks 3-D they say. In fact
there's now a list of who looks

Absolutely! If I made a film of Boulle's novel the humans would be naked, and I'd show the scene of them mating in the cages!
However, I would be willing to release an edited version for theatres and have the unexpurgated version for DVD!

Also, thanks for the last two Within strips. I'm still playing catch-up after being away from the PC for several days over Christmas, and I was thrilled to see not one but two new Within strips. It does feel,
however, that we've missed a part of the story, which is how Marcus found out about the contents of the time capsule that Dr. Garvon found. Surely Dr. Garvon didn't just bring the contents to the nearest gorilla
garrison? Was there a spy on the expedition?
Looking back, in strip 10 when Marcus enter's Ursus' office he says he's heard rumors of a discovery that may help with Ursus' proposal for an army. But in strip 15 Marcus is handing Ursus a
scroll. Is this scroll a written report of the 'rumors' that Marcus 'heard'? If it's a written report from a spy or a garrison commander, wouldn't it be considered more than just a rumour?
Of course, this could be a big fake-out on the part of the writer. Marcus may very well not be talking about Dr. Garvon's discovery, but something totally different and it will only be later that these two parts
of the story will interesect.
Finally, I'd love to see the next Monkey Planet chapter illustration, but not if it's going to delay the next Within strip or more Going Home pages.

Oooh, Dr. Garvon's up to something. I bet he's about to go on the run with the items from the time capsule, and then we'll have a big chase, with Neil going nuts breaking panel borders and such.
It really looks like Garvon's assistant is a young Cornelius here, although I'm still not 100% convinced. If this takes place prior to Planet then he shouldn't be aware yet than Man once ruled over Apes,
but clearly in strip 7 he saw the book from the time capsule.

Yes, there are panels in the UK editions that never appeared in the US editions. These are actual story panels, not just the new cover images and the new splash pages that were created for segments published as one
part in the US but two parts in the UK. This is pretty well documented by Rob Kirby's article in Simian Scrolls #6, which is what prompted me to start collecting the UK editions, and it's also the reason I chose
to scan the UK editions rather than the US editions.

*** I got my two issues of "BEWARE THE BEAST" yesterday.
And let me say...
"Sweet...!"
I especially like the extra stuff that hasn't been seen in any of the
online BTB pages. I get the impression -- whether it's intended or
not, I don't know -- that the tribe of humans who relentlessly go
after Gideon do so because... maybe?... because some Mutant like the
Negro in "BENEATH" has his eyes closed and is compelling them like a
psychic puppetmaster.
"We get our enemies to kill each other."
I also like the stuff where Gideon sees the "scarecrows" and has to
make a decision about whether to break "one of the most ancient of
laws" -- to go where it is "forbidden" to go. He seems "driven" to do
so, in order to finish killing the human he shot with his rifle. I
like the line: 'Never has there been a 'one that got away'... and
he'll be DAMNED if he's going to let this one be his first.' His urge
to kill the human overcomes his societal conditioning, his religious
duty -- "he'll be DAMNED". Why else would he be willing to risk
disobeying the prophet, the Apes' Lawgiver? Is there some Mutant
compelling him via mind-control to continue after the human? Perhaps
not as blatantly as happened with Brent and Taylor, when they were
compelled to fight each other -- and when Brent was compelled to
drown Nova in the fountain, or choke-and-kiss her to death. But
perhaps just enough to loosen up Gideon's inhibitions that nth
degree... to push him over the threshold...?
I also liked the pencil sketches on the last pages of each issue.
Nice touch.
One thing (a little thing, I'm just quibbling here): it could've used
some pagination (i.e. page numbers). I'm sure it was just an
oversight. The online pages had page numbers, but they ain't on the
printed version's pages. Why?
But that's just a quibble, pay it no heed. In my opinion, this little
2-issue gem is the best thing to happen to POTA in a long while. And
that includes Burton's movie. This is better. It's "classic" POTA,
and the "production values" are top-notch. Neil, my hat's off to you.
You're the best thing since Ploog! None of the POTA comics since the
old Marvel days has even come close in quality -- and, in fact, you
outshine several of the artists that Marvel had, in my opinion (I'm
thinking here of Herb Trimpe and a few others...). My favorite comic
book artist is Paul Gulacy -- I dig his "realistic" style of drawing.
His Shang-Chi looked like Bruce Lee. Your POTA humans have the "look"
of the humans in "PLANET" and "BENEATH", and you've gone out of your
way to make the ANSA ship look how it should, rather than the way
they ended up looking in Marvel's adaptations.
Dave, even though this is really just a 'vignette', it's a well-
realized one; sure, you have to know the POTA movies to "get" what
this is about, but that's a given. I like that it's a brutal story --
it doesn't sugar-coat anything; like when Gideon's about to commit
infanticide, bashing a baby's head in with a rock: THAT is a horrific
notion... and, in the context of the POTA setting, an imminently
realistic one. Just out of curiosity, is there a prose version of
this illustrated story? I know you've written other POTA fanfics, but
is there a version of this one written up, with (perhaps) some
details that were "edited" out for the sake of economy in regards to
this illustrated format?
One quick question: the three Ape-onauts seem to be seated with Zira
in the port-side chair, to the left of both male chimps; Which of
those two is Cornelius, and which is Milo? Would Milo be the one in
the middle (presumably the Command position, like Virdon in the TV
series ship)? Or would they seat the newlyweds next to each other?
For the purposes of my own POTA project, I've wondered which ape was
seated in which seat -- you can't tell from the extant screenshots,
since the spacesuit helmets are purposely too dark.
Nuff said! Great job, guys! You, too, Mike! I don't know what you did
as Editor of this project (did you edit anything out???), but it
turned out beeyooteefulleeeee!

*** Here's what I think. I think that the down-beat endings
of "PLANET" and "BENEATH" were the appropriate one-two punch-in-the-
gut that the human race needed (then) and still needs (now) regarding
that amorphous "thing" usually called HUMAN NATURE.
We humans achieved the ability to destroy our own world in the 1960s.
Oh, we had nukes in the late 40's and had plenty of bombers at Air
Force bases to "deliver" them to their targets... but it wasn't until
the 60's that so damned MANY nukes had been built -- to the point
where we could've wiped out every living thing on our planet ten
times over -- with the ICBM's to do so at the mere push-of-a-button.
In 1968, a sizable percentage of people actually believed that there
WOULD be a nuke war in their lifetimes. As paranoid as a lotta people
are regarding Terrorism attacks post-911, the notion that the entire
PLANET would become a radioactive graveyard makes it pale into
insignificance.
"PLANET" depicted a 20th Century man discovering -- 20 centuries
after-the-fact -- that his own species had done the unthinkable-yet-
anticipated deed: Nuclear War. Taylor doesn't use the "n"-word
("nuclear"), but he doesn't HAVE to: he says, "You BLEW IT UP!" and
we KNOW what he means by that.
And "BENEATH" shows an even worse outcome. Not just the destruction
of a technologically sophisticated civilization (ours), but the
annihilation of the entire WORLD.
Those two films were, in essence, the human race looking itself in
the mirror and seeing all the ugly things that are a part of us.
Our "human nature". But rather than try to mask over that ugliness,
as the Mutants do, we need to see our own inner ugliness -- so that
we might CHANGE our very natures. Otherwise, we'll end up as a
failure of galactic proportions.
Imagine that intelligent life evolves on less than one planet in a
billion: that's STILL about a million worlds in our galaxy alone. And
every species will have had to evolve from a savage beginning,
overcoming its ancestral savagery -- it's "monster-from-the-Id",
from "FORBIDDEN PLANET". Those beings which "make it" into a
spacefaring phase, where they are no longer trapped on a single
homeworld, will be those who overcame their tendency to destroy
themselves.
In a time when we were on the verge of doing just that, during a so-
called "cold" war, Hollywood gave us two movies that showed us at our
worst. At our ugliest. At our TRUEST.
We have to beautify ourselves. Not mask it over with a false front,
as the Mutants do (so that they can continue to worship the Bomb that
will ultimately destroy them and everything else). We have to
transform ourselves. Somehow. Make ourselves genuinely beautiful --
from the standpoint of the galactic beings who, perhaps, have already
succeeded at their own struggle against their "inner beast". If we
don't manage to do this, we'll probably be quarantined here on Earth,
like in "THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL" -- prevented from extending
our reach beyond the horizons of our own little world.
"STAR TREK" attempted to show us -- or, our descendants -- the way we
would LIKE to imagine we'll turn out. "PLANET OF THE APES" shows us
more as how we really are.
We're intelligent savages. We're mutants. We're harbingers of death.
Yet... we can become something much better than that. As Taylor hopes
when he says, "... you who are reading me now..." -- in the Earth-
Time year 2673 -- "... are a DIFFERENT BREED... I hope a BETTER one."
We're not hopeless. And we NEED to see an imagined version of
ourselves as FAILURES in order for us to further our resolve to NOT
wind up that way. That's what the POTA saga does for us.
Well, for ME, at any rate.

I can tell you that the lack of page numbers is deliberate for production reasons. When Dave provided me with the final pages for printing he left off the page numbers so that the page files could be used for either
a single issue or the two separate issues without any renumbering required. I thought it was a great idea up until the time came to fold the pages. :)
One of the reasons the story is split across two issues is that the equipment I used was unable to handle the page count if we were to bind this as a single issue without compromising the paper quality.
The prose version of Dave's story was printed in issue 39 of Ape Chronicles. It carries the original title Last Stand in the Forbidden Zone, which was changed for the comic so as not to give away one of the
story twists too early on. The same issue has interviews with Michael, Neil and Dave and a cover illustration of Gideon by Neil.

*** I whole-heartedly agree. There's nudity in "SCHINDLER'S LIST",
but it's not gratuitous -- it depicts humans as if they were herds of
cattle, when the Nazis were inspecting them prior to their being
herded into the camps. A similar de-sexualized portrayal of ANIMALS
who happen to be humans -- like the "yahoo" creatures in the 4th
voyage of Lemuel Gulliver -- is exactly what a modern POTA movie
would need. It wouldn't be pornographic. It'd be like a National
Geographic portrayal.
Back in 68, they had no choice but to go for the "loincloth" look.
But nowadays, they COULD do what Spielberg did in "SCHINDLER'S LIST",
as long as it wasn't done in a prurient fashion. They COULD do a POTA
flick -- even a faithful adaptation of Boulle's novel -- with full-
frontal nudity. The humans in the story are mere animals.
Try to imagine a live-action version of Disney's "BAMBI" ... but with
CLOTHING on the "naked" deer, to cover up their "naughty bits".
Ridiculous!
But, in a way, that's EXACTLY what it is with the humans in "PLANET"
and "BENEATH". Realistically, they wouldn't be wearing ANY clothing
at all. The fact that they wear SOME type of clothing -- what Zira
calls "clothing fit for humans" -- shows them to be MORE than a mere
animal.
Taken to its extreme -- as in Burton's lousy re-imagining -- we have
a race of SPEAKING, CLOTHING-WEARING SERVANTS who are somehow deemed
mere animals by the likes of Thade. "Is there a soul in there?" etc.
Why not, "Is there a THINKING MIND inside that skull?" If they can
SPEAK, then they can THINK. They can REASON.
In the original, the Apes could get away with thinking humans were
nothing but savages because they could NOT speak... until Taylor gets
his voice back in a very public way! The prosecutor, Honorius, has to
concoct a wild theory to explain away Taylor's ability to speak: Zira
and a "corrupt surgeon named Galen" experimented on a wounded animal,
tampering with his brain and throat tissues... to produce a speaking
monster.
"That's a LIE!"
But it's a lie he had no choice but to resort to. In Burton's crappy
movie, ALL THE F-ING HUMANS CAN SPEAK! There's no way the entire
society can think of 'em as mere animals. They can be racists, and
hate them the same way rednecks hate 'niggers' and call 'em "monkeys"
and all that -- but they can't deny that the hated race can Speak.
The most appropriate way to portray the POTA humans of 3955 is to
show them as the beasts the Apes have reduced them to. They would be
naked. And the women would have armpit hair and unshaven legs. And
the men would look kinda like what William Hurt turns into
in "ALTERED STATES". If they could do THAT in THAT movie, then they
can do appropriate nudity in any new POTA movie. And they SHOULD do
it, rather than pg-ify it (or g-ify it, ratings-wise).

I just wanted to say that the posting Patrick did on this 2 comic set is something I agree with almost 100%... The one thing I don't agree with is the theory that Gideon
and the beasts are being "mind contolled" by the Mutants... That's a little far fetched to me... I think what "pushed" Gideon to chase the human into the FZ was his ego...
But everything he said about the quality of the work, and the inclusions of the extra stuff is right on...<.html<.html <.html

Well, any excuse to give Neil something cool to draw is okay with me.
What you may want to do when these strips are collected and printed at
the
end is change Marcus' line in strip 10 to 'received a report' rather
than
'heard some rumors'.

Oooh, Dr. Garvon's up to something. I bet he's about to go on the run
with
the items from the time capsule, and then we'll have a big chase, with
Neil
going nuts breaking panel borders and such.
It really looks like Garvon's assistant is a young Cornelius here,
although
I'm still not 100% convinced. If this takes place prior to Planet then
he
shouldn't be aware yet than Man once ruled over Apes, but clearly in
strip 7
he saw the book from the time capsule.

Then came #8 where the focus seemed to shift to getting big names rather

I really hope issue #9 gets back to the stuff POTA fans want to read

I read that there will be an interview with Jerry Pournelle in #9. I

Yes, there are panels in the UK editions that never appeared in the US
editions. These are actual story panels, not just the new cover images
and
the new splash pages that were created for segments published as one
part in
the US but two parts in the UK. This is pretty well documented by Rob
Kirby's article in Simian Scrolls #6, which is what prompted me to start
collecting the UK editions, and it's also the reason I chose to scan the
UK
editions rather than the US editions.

We just can't all get along!
It is kinda amusing at the same time - in a Wes Anderson way - look at
this group for example.
We were all (mainly) on the POTA group years ago and then war broke out
between some of us who had strong opinions.
Splinter groups were formed (think of the "Judean People's Front" -
SPLITTERS! ;) Peace was made/broken. War was declared - repeat ad
infinitum until we all disappear up our own (and each others') bums!
But everyone has their reasons. "He said this!" "She did that!" Think
about the trivial things that have started world wars!
It is totally depressing.
And a bit boring too.
And funny.

<.html
