What was Sammy's deal about doing Anthony Newley songs?
He did Candy Man from Willy Wonka as well.
Actually, Leslie Bricusse completely wrote DOLITTLE, both he and Newley worked on WONKA.
Sammy was just chasing the potential hits. It's all a crapshoot.

I don't understand. The youngsters aren't going to be standing
around watching. I take it you have had sex, since you have
children, and yet they may not know that's how they got here.
You continue to have sex, and there aren't kids watching that.
I hope. Are you talking about the Cornfield Scene? That

solve
the problem? Then they wouldn't be seeing they hadn't seen

My point was...
What is the point of the scene that you are asking for? Since there
is no reason to breed humans -- as there are already too many -- and
since the Apes don't seem prone to excessive procreation, I don't
see the need of putting it in the "new" movie! It just isn't an
important part of the story.
Where am I losing everyone?

If they're talking about doing the "new movie" as Boulle's novel is, then they WOULD be breeding humans, because on Soror, humans are a "cash crop"... It says something in there about the
humans being captured and sold, because humans bring a high price...
Even if it'd be more along the lines of PLANET/BENEATH, in those films, the lab apes breed humans... They breed them for genetic studies,or maybe to breed more "lab rats" so they can rely on their own
inventory of humans rather than relying on the live ones brought in by the Hunt Club... Why do you think Zira placed Nova in with Taylor? She wanted them to mate... <.html

Honest. I definitely see where you are coming from and, in a
previous note, I grant that they type of movie you suggest
would/could likely get the awards you want it to. I'm not even
saying that isn't the direction it should go.
I am saying that I think it could be successful with the following --
gaining what I think could (I would italicize, but can't in this
text box) be a pg-13 rating:
1.) nude humans -- modestly filmed -- no sexual situations on camera
2.) violent (Mel Gibson-esque) type battles
3.) icky language
4.) "tasteful" conversations about the stuff that you all want to
see on camera
As I have said, I would rather it be a PG, but I didn't suggest it
could be successful as a PG -- I said I would like that "If I had
my 'druthers."
Now I haven't gone back to check my previous posts for quotes. But
that is the position I have taken and will continue to take. I am
intersted, though, and that is why I asked, to know how you all
feel. I was actually hoping that somewhere in Ape-dom someone would
think the way I do. Italics: I'm trying to flesh you out, my
friend, if you are there -- whoever you are.
Peace.
Helen

Not true... It seems most people that are talking on it aren't "seeing it as 10yr olds", they're seeing it as what would probably be the realistic portrayal of the setting... You almost seem to think
that the whole movie would focus on one small scene, which would probably last a couple minutes in a full length movie... 97% of the film wouldn't even deal with breeding their savages, yet it seems that you think
it would?
Personally, I wouldn't care how it was handled, or if they even included it or not... But if they would do it, I'd have to say that they're right when they say to do it realistically...

My point is . . .
A. The scene is in the book.
B. In the movie Julius say, "Dr. Zira's not going to be happy. She
want's that pair to mate." Which is what she intended when she gave
Brighteyes his present, which is obvious from that knowing smile she give
him when she does.
and finally C. I'm not talking about any long drawn out scene of writhing
naked bodies in a passionate embrace that lasts an annoyingly, and possibly
embarrassingly, long time (ala The Matrix: Revolutions). I'm taking about
ten or twenty seconds of very unsexual dogstyle (ala Quest For Fire)
to give some credibility to a Space Opera franchise that has been driven
into the ground, and Ewoked to death. If it's not the budget cuts, it's
crap writing with inane ideas full of so many holes that even Patrick can't
unflub them. And you seem to want some Disney Fantasy version of POTA,
which is exactly the opposite of what I want. I realize you don't see the
legitimacy of this scene. But both Planet and Conquest had imposed mating
scenes, or at least implied them, and I'm just trying to pep it up a bit.
But it probably doesn't matter what you or I want. POTA2K1 may
have been the Apes death rattle.

important part of the story.

I think it was... And, if it wasn't, it really is getting nuts here, debating about one scene in a movie that:
a) Probably will never be made.
b) Would probably end up being another "MTV audience" film
c) Which if it was "Boulle'd up", would end up being another SFX/ sets film rather than having anything good in it... They'd be looking at making the apes city and technology, rather than concentrating
on anything to do with the human factor (except of course Ulysse, who would end up being played by another "young Hollywood" punk...)<.html

Okay, but it sounds like a cop out to me.
But the scene isn't there for any purulent
reason. I suppose that the skinny dipping
scene could have been shot with their
underwear on, but that's not going to
play naturally on screen. The scene
is there to dehumanize Taylor. If you'll
remember, in the book, Ulysses refused
to participate in the mating dance, and
Nova was thrown to the cavemen, until
he agreed to mate. I agree that reality
isn't always pretty or pleasant to watch.
But it is real.

That's cool. You don't have to stand in the corner.
But what I'm saying is, it misses the point if it
doesn't deal with the dehumanizing condition.
Taylor has his humanity stripped from him like
his clothes. And this scene is just another way
of dehumanizing him. I know you'd like to able
to have a new POTA that you can discuss with
the kids. I just think there are too many adult
themes in the story to make it family friendly.
The only ones giggling like 10 year olds would
be the gorillas watching the mating if the scene
is done right. Maybe Zira. I'd have to get the
book out to check her attitude towards it. But
does anyone remember the script that was in
between the Terry Hayes one and the Broyles
one? Now that had an interesting treatment
of that scene -- with Cornelius making jokes
about the videos being porn. Now that was
funny! I have it around here somewhere.
I think Chris Columbus wrote that one.

had planned to. I can't wait for the old guard who green lighted the
plan
to die off and maybe get some fresh blood in charge over there. I don't
know what the suits were thinking, or even if they were thinking. You'd
think if they were interested in the bottom line, or even self
preservation,
their first concern would be a quality product. But after seeing some
of
the bombs that get release on a yearly bases, I'm not sure, despite
being in
the biz, that these monkeys wouldn't no a good film if it bit them in
the
ass! I'd help them out, but their beyond redemption. <.html

The Adventure comics started out well
(the best selling black and white comics ever, or something like that) but lost
popularity early because of poor stories. So whether POTA2001 or Adventure's
POTAClassic, POTA has a poor comic's history of late. But let's face it, a
non-superhero comic book has a tough hill to climb anyway. Except for
juggernauts like "Star Wars" or "Alien vs. Predator" I can't think of any long
running comics based on movies recently. They usually have a shelf life of the
movie's release. That Adventure did pretty good with a movie series that was
about 25 years old ain't bad. - - - Jeff

The problem is when companies try to make
things not for the fans, but for a mysterious "everybody" and wind up watering
it down. The big recent movie successes ("Lord of the Rings", "Spiderman",
"Harry Potter") try to be inviting to newbies but don't forget what made these
properties popular in the first place. They are embraced by the fans. Probably
no one courts fans better than Peter Jackson, who does those incredible
"Lord of the Rings" special editions (with the fan club members listed on the
film) and is doing a web video diary on the "King Kong" fan site. - - -

Marky Mark won some critics award for Best Supporting Actor for "I

Giamatti (Limbo) is burning up the "Ten Best" lists with his "Sideways", and
after the acclaim he got last year for "American Splendor" a Best Actor
nomination seems assured. POTA2001 had some quality actors in there. It just
needed a script and a director. - - - Jeff

POTA should be PG13 because of it's budget needs and because teens
and older kids should be able to see it. Unfortunately, we don't give
kids enough credit these days (they have to buy everything with cash). The
original POTA had some heavy stuff they couldn't get away with today (like a
"downer" ending). That's why POTA2001 was garbage. Corporations homogenizing
everything to please the ratings board and the soccer moms who, if they'd look
up from their Bibles once in a while, would see that their kids feel lied to
about the real problems in this world. Back in the day the original POTA could
be rated G and still have some substance. Today it would have to be rewritten.
As for an R "Apes", there's no reason why. I think POTA2001 should
have dealt with the ape/human attraction (that doesn't mean a sex scene) or
given up the ghost. They didn't have the conviction to deal with it, so they
should've just dropped it and not bothered trying to make Ari "sexy", with her
makeup being another marky mark against it. Phooey on corporate cowardice!

Subject: Re: [PotaDG] Ratings
question?
If a
sequel/prequel/conclusion to the Planet of the Apes movie series were
made today, what rating (G, PG, PG13, R) would it need to have in order
to be successful in your opinion?
I've said it many times and I'll say it again. It needs to be
R.
There are a lot of adult themes in this thing. And POTA is,
as you may know, probably the only G rated film in history
with bare-assed scenes in it. But like Star Wars, POTA
has been tamed down for kids, though the ratings belie
that (Conquest being the anomaly). There's no denying it.
Kids think talking monkeys are cool. And Fox played to that,
and Apes suffered because of it. In order to be taken
seriously
as a Sci-fi masterpiece again it has got to go the other way.
I say make it NC-17 with all the sex and violence they can muster.
When I was 7 years old it was the heaviest thing I'd seen to date.
And this would be the only thing that would bring that feeling back
to Apes fans. The feeling that I was witnessing something
ground
breaking. Something that made you think! It Wowed
audiences,
it was so heavy. How can you do that now in the 21 century
with
a sophisticated desensitized modern audience? This is the only
way.
I say if you can't improve it, don't bother remaking it. Are you
listening
Tim Burton? I don't think he wanted to make it better, even if he
could.
That's why he failed.

Ohhh that's right, I forgot that they did the Burton era Apes comics-
and I think they were behind some POTA statues too (or was it Neca? Oh
well, anyhow..)
Yup I do have some apes art but noting completely done yet. I've
thought about doing a small series of various scenes around the
Planet, beyond Ape City.
I see your point about the print finance situation... and it would be
a shame to be forced to just make photocopied & stapled pages instead
of a full printed comic when the work's more deserving of something
better. Either way, hopefully there's a solution!

Oh,Cougar, be creative. Why not a nude, musical versian of pota? Here's
an
example:
(sung to Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night)
Dr Zauis: Stay away from my planet
Stay away from my world.
Disconnect your rocket fuel
give up, don't be a fool.
Today's the day
We're all going to be blown away
My human foe
You screwed up
Let simians rule!
repeat chorus.

Oh, yes. That's going to be at the Holiday Inn next to the airport. I went to one of those things several years ago. Saw Robert Vaughn and Butch Patrick and that chick who was Tabitha on
"Bewitched." Didn't talk to any of them. If you're not buying their signed photos they really don't want to hear from you, and I never know what to say to them.
How do you handle these things, Jeff?

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/polls . I notice one
poll has 22 responses! Maybe YOU have an opinion?
If you are visiting the DG directly from the board, rather than
receiving emails or daily digests, you always have access to the
homepage image, the message archive, the files, the photos, the
links, the database, and the polls by clicking on the section you'd
like to visit. There is even a chat feature. (Has anyone ever used
this?)
If you visit via the internet through the homepage
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG you will have easy
access to the group's other collections. There is a link to Beware
the Beast, Within the Planet of the Apes, and Going Home (all
original fan created pota comics)! You will also find links to our
fan fiction group, our photo gallery, and our archives.
So, head on over to the POTADG homepage
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG , record your opinions
in a poll, create a poll yourself if there is something you'd like
to know from other members, and check out all the stuff. There is a

Good post ,Jeff. I agree with you on these points. One of things I would change with Pota 2001 is the lack of character development. The Ari/Leo relationship is never really fully developed in any direction. As
many have stated before this is a common problem with movies lately, too much special effects and not enough good story and character development. Elaine <.html <.html

.html Hi Guys!!!
After the screaming nightmare of constant work for the last few
months and the even more painful ordeal of Christmas, I've
resurfaced and had some fun opening up my first EBay account.
Guess what I searched for first of all?
Wow! There are some interesting (and CHEAP) POTA goodies over
there. I've been bidding for some lovely stuff (yes Cougar, that is
me asking for your ESCAPE soundtrack CD, and no Michael, I will
NEVER buy any dolls).
Anyway, this has encouraged me to attempt to co-ordinate my POTA
memorabilia collection -- which is considerable as I sit back and
look at it.
I did find one thing I wanted to throw out there to you all to see
if anyone had any more info on the subject.
It's a fanzine called "APESFAN".
I have a copy of a $7 "Special Edition" that's mainly a tribute to
Roddy at the time of his death. It's published by a guy called
George R. Reis in NY state and I wondered if anyone knew anything of
it?
It's beautifully researched and presented, jam-packed with info, and
when I purchased the single copy over here the dealer had no idea of
its origin either.
Anyone know?

Quite a while ago I created a folder in our files section
called 'Members' Art gallery' (A place where members can upload
their Original POTA artwork) and was hoping other members of the

Unfortunately it seems only one other person apart from me has done

Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your
fancy, or start one up yourself!
MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES
TV SHOW COMIC BOOK - GOING HOME!!!
Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and
click on the link underneath the logo....this will take you to the
PDF file of the first 3 pages.
Another new ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES
can be found in the files section of the group or you can just click
on the handy links on the Home Page to view the latest and previous
chapters!
Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is the DG Archives group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and
year .
There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in
the group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to
be enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/
Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos and files are occasionally moved to save space on the
main DG group
All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's
Home Page.
And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and
all that great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all
those wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family
experience!

Yeah, she was pretty hot. I could kick myself now that I didn't talk to her because I remembered later that Maurice "Dr. Zaius" Evans was a semi-regular on that show and I wondered if she remembered
him, but she probably doesn't remember much.

.html I've noticed that the other yahoo apes board has it's own seperate
gallery site. It'd be cool to combine everyone's together,
categorized by artist name. Just an idea, though I'm not sure which
direction to go about doing that.

+++ Thanks to all of you luvly people at the DG for the warm welcome
back. I really appreciate it.
Neil, the only reason I slaved over that fab pic of Brent's ship was
to try and get Whitty to use it on the home page -- if only for a
few days....!
Whitty?
