Rory --
Modine's a wimp -- and he looks like a teenager in the way DiCaprio
always will -- regardless of talent.
This concept requires maturity. Try looking across the pond to
actors like Colin Farrell or Clive Owen.
More interesting and mature, IMHO.

A limey play Taylor?!!! No @*#*!!! way!
No, have you seen Modine lately? He's looking a lot older. I'd suggest Jeff Bridges, but he's too old now too.
What about that guy from the dragon movie? Matthew Something or other.

++++ You mean Matthew McConaughey. Now he's brilliant. You were
talking about that OK flick "REIGN OF FIRE". I seem to remember he
was ably assisted in that film by the great British actor Christian
Bale, who is currently making BATMAN BEGINS with the great British
director Christopher Nolan.

OK so I don't wish to brag -- and the world knows that the Limeys
got it before the rest of the universe -- but the show is so good
it's enough to make grown men drop to their knees and weep.

This is an unmoderated group now.
If anybody objects, they can tell you (or me if they prefer privacy).
Not one of the 300 odd (no pun intended) members has objected so fire
away.
It is all on the topic of cast and crew for a new POTA movie anyway so
what the hey?
If we get too far off track people WILL complain and we will then need
to do something.

.htmlHey, I draw for Neil all the time!
He has to get his laughs somewhere!
The pencils you did, with Neil inking them, is my idea of what a pota
comic SHOULD look like. Well, I mean a PROFESSIONAL publication.
Fan comics can look like....well, whatever!
Mike McColm's comic is an example - it looks fantastic and you can tell
he is a fan. I'd rather read it than stories about Viking Gorillas any
day! But to get it published professionally, other than a private run,
I think the art needs to be a step up. No criticism of the works, I
just would want a bit more (eg Neil inking them - he would make Burke
and Virdon look far more recognisable!). I'm talking perfection here -
I guess I don't take excuses for second best; even if it is a fan
effort.
Terry's comic looks like fun too, but I do hope we get a replacement
artist who draws apes that look more like they do on the movies. I
realise that's Dan's drawing style and that's great - I just like to see
the apes look real. Hope nobody is offended by my honesty - I am just
shooting straight here. I didn't even like Gary Challoner's apes first
time round, but they grew on me and are right up there now with how I
like apes drawn if not like a photo (as Mr Foster does them). Comic
STRIPS should just be fun anyway - like "WITHIN" is - first and foremost
FUN! I really love the ideas for your story Terry. Why doesn't Glen
Scheetz do the art? What I have seen of his stuff looks good - however
they do all seem to be straight from photos so maybe he would find the
imaginative stuff too involving?
Like Dave Ballard's script that we did not use for the TV Show comic -
it was a great story, but it just didn't have enough from the POTA
Universe going on. Nor did BTB when we first got hold of it. It had
one gorilla and a bunch of humans! There was no way in the world Foster
was going to get away with not drawing some of the other characters!
Anyway, we are a spoilt bunch here with all the magnificently talented
individuals we have contributing things that professionals would not be
able to come close to!
Tim - sharpen your pencils buddy!

This concept requires maturity. Try looking across the pond to
actors like Colin Farrell or Clive Owen.
More interesting and mature, IMHO.

I just joined yesterday (on Rory's recommendation through another group) and
the first thing I did was check out the Polls and the Files!! I have voted
on all the Polls.
I actually find it quite surprising how many people don't do Polls or don't
realise that they are there! As I own a lot of groups myself and make Polls
for my Members.
Anyway, a bit about me. I live in Plymouth, England and got interested in
POTA in the late 70's when the original TV series was re-run. I have seen the
whole series and all the original films, plus the re-make, of which I thought
was ok, but it seemed to lack the charm of the original films and TV series.
I just love the concept of Earth being run by Apes rather than humans, this
was a very imaginative concept I thought.
Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you all.
Yours Truly 2005,
Kuiama.

There are some active polls in the polls section of the site:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/polls . I notice one
poll has 22 responses! Maybe YOU have an opinion?
If you are visiting the DG directly from the board, rather than
receiving emails or daily digests, you always have access to the
homepage image, the message archive, the files, the photos, the
links, the database, and the polls by clicking on the section you'd
like to visit. There is even a chat feature. (Has anyone ever used
this?)
If you visit via the internet through the homepage
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG you will have easy
access to the group's other collections. There is a link to Beware
the Beast, Within the Planet of the Apes, and Going Home (all
original fan created pota comics)! You will also find links to our
fan fiction group, our photo gallery, and our archives.
So, head on over to the POTADG homepage
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG , record your opinions
in a poll, create a poll yourself if there is something you'd like
to know from other members, and check out all the stuff. There is a
lot here to amuse and amaze you.

I totally agree with you. It seems that Directors today seem to think that
all the audience wants out of a film is loads of special effects, but I don't
agree, I like a film with minimal special effects and a very strong storyline.
The 2001 version of POTA was weak in comparison to the originals and I
thought that too much was put into the effects, I even said this to my partner at
the time, when we sat and watched it for the first time.

Good post ,Jeff. I agree with you on these points. One of things I would
change with Pota 2001 is the lack of character development. The Ari/Leo
relationship is never really fully developed in any direction. As many have
stated
before this is a common problem with movies lately, too much special effects
and
not enough good story and character development. Elaine <.html

POTA comics have outlasted all other POTA products
in 3 different runs !
the fact that POTA lasted from 1990-1993 with no
new movies or tv shows i think is a good point on its own
The Adventure comics started out
well (the best selling black and white comics ever, or something like that)
but lost popularity early because of poor stories. So whether POTA2001 or
Adventure's POTAClassic, POTA has a poor comic's history of late. But let's
face it, a non-superhero comic book has a tough hill to climb anyway. Except
for juggernauts like "Star Wars" or "Alien vs. Predator" I can't think of any
long running comics based on movies recently. They usually have a shelf life
of the movie's release. That Adventure did pretty good with a movie series
that was about 25 years old ain't bad. - - - Jeff

Mike, do you have some artwork you could share with
us?
And while I would like to see the comics by the fans, for the
fans too I think I'm coming to my limit of what money I burn in the name

The thing is though, as I am nowhere near being a computer whiz by a
long stretch of anyone's imagination, by trial and error I have got
the Home Page set up so that it will only look okay with certain
sized pictures. Otherwise the text and links get screwed up and
pushed all over the place, so to keep things simple and quick (at
least until I have the time to really get all this stuff worked out)
pictures have to be limited to 240(W) x 355(H) pixels or be able to
be re-sized or fitted to those measurements.
So if anyone has pictures they want to have used just upload them to
the folder and if you need help re-sizing them I can help with all
that stuff.

I enjoy them - they are fun.
I would just prefer the style was closer to
Foster, Ploog, and the guy who id the British Annuals. I mean if Pablo
Picasso drew a POTA strip I would say the same thing.
It's about style and personal
preference.
I am not being critical of Dan's style - it
is his choice and that's fine. However I would prefer to see an artist use
a style that looks more like POTA apes. Chopsuey's art in the DG Gallery
is an example. I think even the "return" artists (for most of the strip -
excluding style changes) did not get it right. That's because they wanted
to get a style that allowed them to draw the apes quicker more than anything
else I think.
However I think Jeff's Veetus is perfect for
what it is too - a "send up" style SHOULD be COMICAL. I love those strips
Jeff - hope there are more coming!
I think the "serious" stuff should be as
close to real as possible. Again, this is just my opinion. Everyone
else is entitled to their own opinion, as I should be entitled to mine.
Nobody is "right". However if people ask for opinions, then thy can expect
to get opinions. I don't think anybody wants a sugar coated lie do
they?
Michael
What I like about "The Truth" is that there is some mystery here that
will keep me reading it. But the main thing with comics for me is the artwork
and I look at the drawings first, then absorb the story. I think all of the
fanfic comics from both groups are drawn well and I enjoy looking at them and
reading them.

| Subject: Re: superior nova |
.html*** Hey, Ron. Here's my take on this subject.
Both Nova and the dude Taylor scuffled with did their best to
obliterate Taylor's writing-in-the-sand. Why?
I think it's because they -- these descendants of the humans who've
managed to survive in a brutal world where Apes have oppressed Man to
the point of having driven them to a state of savagery -- they know
that Apes will do horrendous things to ANY human who displays any
form of "higher" communication, such as WRITING or VOCALIZATION.
These mute human savages don't know how to write, of course; but they
know that the mere act of writing will get them killed -- so, when
they see Taylor doing just that, they try to help him, to save him
from the mistreatment they know he'll receive if the Apes see his
scribbles in the sand. It is AFTER Taylor's mostly-obliterated
message is seen by Zaius that Zaius begins to set in motion the plan
to have Taylor gelded. Seeing "Bright Eyes" in Cornelius' office --
with that paper airplane present -- only accelerates the plan. The
next thing we know, Zaius sends two gorillas to the lab where
Taylor's caged -- with Zira not present -- to order Julius to have
him prepped for the emasculating surgery.
Nova DID have the capacity for speech -- it wasn't a flaw in the
anatomy of their speech organs that kept the humans mute, as Zira
insists -- it was a 'flaw' in the human BRAIN. These humans CHOOSE
not to make any vocal sounds -- they've been bred to survive by being
absolutely silent. Even when being gunned down in the cornfield, they
make absolutely no sound vocally. No screams, no groans. No panting
or whimpering, any of that -- unlike any animal hunted by Man which
has vocalizing abilities.
They've been 'conditioned' to be absolutely silent: what the Humans
once did to Apes in APE MANAGEMENT to instill obedience to the "No!"
command is analogous to what the Apes eventually did to Humans to
instill obedience to the rule that Man -- a beast who "has no
understanding" -- cannot then exemplify an ability which
evinces 'understanding'. The ability to use vocal speech negates the
Ape dogmas about "the beast Man". Any human who once negated that
dogma was put to death -- probably, in part, as a warning to any
other humans around, so that if they wanted to survive in this brutal
world, they'd better keep their yaps shut.
Zira tries to get indigenous humans to "Speak!", offering up tidbits
of sugar. But even though they CAN speak (or, they have the
physiological ability to make vocalizations), they don't DARE do so.
Not even Zira's friendly attempts to encourage them to speak can
overcome the dreaded conditioning that instilled their deeply-seated
fear.
Only when keeping silent meant that her mate would die at the mind-
controlling hands of the Mutants, does Nova finally overcome that
fear (and it helps that there were no apes around), and rasp out the
only word she would ever speak: "Taylor!"
If Hasslein knew even HALF of what the Apes had done to Man, he'd
have killed the Ape-onauts earlier when he had a chance. He wouldn't
give a flying **** about being judged by posterity for having done
the "historically unpopular" thing: it would've saved his own species
from a fate almost as bad as death. Worse than death, for some.
Better to die a free man than to live the life of an abject slave.
Or of a degraded beast.
Patrick

*** If we're talking about a faithful-to-Boulle version of POTA, then
what about the scene where Ulysse, Levain, and Antelle first actually
SEE Nova? She's described as being
"... a woman--a young girl, rather, unless it was a goddess. She
boldly asserted her femininity in the light of this monstrous sun,
completely naked and without any ornament other than her hair, which
hung down to her shoulders. True, we had been deprived of any point
of comparison for over two years, but none of us was inclined to fall
a victim to mirages. It was plain to see that the woman, who stood
motionless on the ledge like a statue on a pedestal, possessed the
most perfect body that could be conceived on Earth. Levain and I were
breathless, lost in admiration, and I think even Professor Antelle
was moved.
Standing upright, leaning forward, her breasts thrust out toward us,
her arms raised slightly backward in the attitude of a diver taking
off..." etc. [LA PLANETE DES SINGES, chapter 5]
The 1968 film's portrayal is quite different. Nova there is pretty,
yes, but her rag-clothing makes her look rather wretched -- and she
doesn't have any overtly sexual animalistic effects on Taylor, Landon
& Dodge. Taylor probably likes what he sees when he looks at her, but
HIS mind is more on the implications of their culture level: "If this
is the best they've got around here, in six months we'll be running
this planet."
Not "Hmmm... I wouldn't mind romping with that girl -- I bet she'd
clean up nicely..."!
A faithful-to-Boulle film version would have to show Nova in all her
naked splendor, with the obviously aroused onlooking by the space
travellers who see her statuesque pose.
What rating d'ya suppose THAT scene would get, if done faithfully? PG-
13, easily!
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

*** I contributed that article entitled "A CHRONOLOGY OF THE PLANET
OF THE APES" on pages 52-55. Since then, I've discovered Yahoo
Groups, the original Yahoo POTA group, and its various offshoots --
including the unmoderated one I own ["POTA Phenomenon"]... and now
you can get so much POTA stuff online that fanzines seem rather old-
fashioned. I was happy to be a part of that one, though. They did a
good job, Mr. Reis & Mr. Lozowski, et al. Jeff "Veetus" Krueger also
contributed to it, a couple articles in fact.
The green-tint used on the outer cover sorta exemplifies the fact
that "APESFAN" (issue number 2, anyway) was like that little green
plant that Dodge found in the Forbidden Zone. One lonely little bit
of life in POTA-ville amidst a veritable desert of nothingness.
It's a lot greener now.

I would! I'd have it R -- and not the sort of R rated stuff you
get on Skinamax. But the good solid R you get from a major
motion picture, like Blade Runner or The Godfather. Is that so
much to ask? Planet of the Apes was a major motion picture,
at least the first one was, when it was release. That's what I
want.

++++ Patrick,
I looked over the issue after I posted the above and saw your name.
I was about to post in order to mention this and to ask you about
your contribution but you beat me to it.
Congrats to you for a) flying the flag when all around was a desert
and b) being involved in an intelligent fanzine.
I was involved in fanzine writing/publication in the late 70s and I
know how difficult it can be. Dedication, hard work and dipping
into your own pocket is only the beginning and I think work like
that is to be applauded (and yes, John Roche and Terry Hoknes, I'm
talking about you guys).
The "veritable desert of nothingness" was something I also had to
endure throughout the 80s and 90s, but isn't it wonderful to have
come through and be where we are now?
Just ruminating...

I just managed to buy a set of the "basic Planet of the Apes Inkwork
Card Set -- 90 cards" for an INCREDIBLY cheap price.
Can anyone explain why this is called the "basic" set and how many
more additional cards are then on top?
Cheers,

The nudity etc. discussion so far has been about the movies but I
was wondering, if it came to an illustrated version of Boulle's book
or even a comic adaption of it, would it be okay to go with the
nudity and stuff in these different mediums?

.htmlOne more thing. Last summer I found that Alan Cozad address was no
longer valid. The last time I spoke with him, which was in March
2004, he was having health problems. Visiting Linda's web site I
noticed his last entery was in March of 2004. I fear that maybe
something awful has happened to him, that he has passed on.
Do any of you know him? He wrote Nova's Story for Mike's website. If
you do, have you heard from him? I am really concerned and could use
some closure as to what his fate was. H was close and dear friend.
Please e-mail me at willowape@... . Thanks Wendy <.html
