These figures need help. My Cornelius is being ripped up and fixed, but some things can't be fixed like the color. What's with the eyes looking up and
to the right? For the price I expect more, luckily I have homemade chimp suits and glyphs that are accurate, but I feel for you guys.
Zira is a mess.
Best of Luck.

Hey! Want to sell some of those glyphs? I'll need three for Cornelius and one for Zira.
Would you know what kind of paint to use on Zira's shoes to get them the right color?

I'd be glad to help you out with the glyphs and I'll knock it out cheaply. The Zira shoes will need some research. If you need help with the red sleeves I can give you
a real easy and fun way to fix it and you don't need to sew. You can even add the black stringy things by the hands.

.html I know I've asked this before, but does anyone have a recent address for
Alex Ruiz from Florida? I know at one point, he had changed his POTA
collective site to a Lord of the Rings site, but POTA Collective was
still in the address. Should anyone know the url for the site, that'd
help as well.
Contact me directly if you can help out. Thanks!!

I haven't had the chance to see any close up 'in the flesh' to know
if they really are as bad as some have said or is there just a
general air of disappointment because they are not perfectly
accurate? (which of course they should be for the price!)

are not 100% exactly identical to the movie but are
any toys? I enjoy the fact that they (Sideshow) even
bothered to make new Apes stuff so soon after the
Hasbro line ....and you have to admit , the Sideshows
are a whole lot better than the Hasbros. I am getting
every one of these new guys and can't wait for the
Lawgiver statue.....If WE don't appreciate these , who
will? Is there any one else out there that like their
new Apes????

Well, I'll say this, as accurate as the Medicom is,
even though her skirt is brown all the way to down
to the ground, she's still wearing green boots! So
as accurate they aren't perfect either. And for all the
Sideshow inaccuracies, they're still ten times better
than Mego's and Hasburo's! I'm happy they have it
as close as it is. Still the feet turn backwards, a lot.

They're not that bad and compared to the Hasbros they're great, but I'm really picky and for the amount charged I'd have appreciated greater accuracy with the minor clothing details. Sideshow also
does a lot of historic military figures and I'll bet the attention to detail is much greater there.

Sideshow has had some accuracy problems in their military lines as
well. There were some minor problems with some of their WWI soldiers,
such as innaccurate colored "puttees" on their US Army Doughboy.
All of the major 1/6 scale makers have had mistakes in some of their
figures; Dragon, Blue Box Toys, Hasbro, etc.
I understand that for the prices that are being charged for some
figures, the customer should expect things to be perfect. That's
what's so good about many internet sites that post toy reviews. We
have the option to see what we're getting ahead of time and to decide
whether we want them or not.
In case anyone isn't aware, this is a very good site with toy reviews:
http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_122904.htm
I would say that I like the Sideshow figures. I can accept them -as
is. Maybe I ended up paying a little less for them because I have a
local comic book shop that is carrying them so I didn't have to pay
for shipping, or pay the higher price of ordering them from Sideshow
directly. With tax I ended up paying about $38 each for Zaius and
Zira.
If I do decide to modify them, I would dye Zira's skirt/shirt(they
are connected) a darker brown. Dyeing is pretty easy. Sometimes the
hot water from the dye will shrink the clothe a little, which would
be fine since I think her skirt is a little too long anyway.
I would paint her boots with brown acrylic paint. Wash the plastic
first with hot soapy water and let it dry. After you paint it, spray
it with some Testors Dull Cote. That will protect the paint from
coming off and cut down on any shine. It also helps make the paint
less tacky (which can happen sometimes).
I also noticed that her sleeves hang too much. It seems like in the
movie, her sleeves were tighter around her arm. This can be fixed by
turning the sleeves inside out and sewing a new seem down the arm to
the wrist, that is narrower. The extra fabric can then be cut off.
For Zaius, I would shorten his coat. Fold up the bottom about a 1/2
inch and sew around. I would also add a little "stuffing" under his
brown tunic to give him a little more of a pot belly. You can use
anything - tissue, foam, etc. I think I would also add some paint
details to his face. Put a watered down, brown acrylic paint wash
over his face and then wipe it off before it drys. This allows the
paint to fall into any sculpted "cracks" on the face and it brings
out more detail. I would thenk repaint his eybrows with yellow ochre
paint using a fine brush. Maybe he could also use some more yellowish
drybrush highlights on his hair.
I thought the paper plane that came with Zira was lame, and why
should she have the plane? I made my own small paper plane and gave
it to my Zaius to hold (and eventually crush).
I've seen Cornelius in the store and he looks pretty good in the box.
I don't forsee many changes for him. I'm anxious to see how the
Gorilla soldier turns out. The bandolier on the prototype (on
Sideshow's website) looks way too light. I hope I don't have to make
my own bandolier.

I got both Zira and Cornelius from Amoktime.com. With postage the total came to $73.98. The regular Dr. Zaius figure arrived earlier and was with postage $40.99. The exclusive Zaius I had to get
direct from Sideshow and with postage that was a little over $50.
If I do decide to modify them, I would dye Zira's skirt/shirt(they

I've done that with the Bela Lugosi Frankenstein figure. I've collected many of the Universal figure and I prefer the Silver Screen editions, however on their regular Frankenstein Monster editions all
the jackets are green. I dyed a couple black, but the threads wouldn't take the dye so I had to use a black magic marker on the threads.
I also noticed that her sleeves hang too much.
I've already cut a quarter of an inch off the sleeves of both Cornelius and Zira.
For Zaius, I would shorten his coat.
I can pretty much live with him as is. I've bought both Zaius figures, and yes, I've used tissue paper to give them the Maurice Evans pot belly! On Zira I also gathered up her skirt in the back and
simply used a paper clip to hold it tighter around her legs. I only look at them from the front. As for the color of the clothes... dying is a little messing. Been there don that with the
Frankensteins, think I'll skip it for now.

My only real problem with both Cornelius and Zira is that the glyphs are too small and on the Zira I got upside down, but there's a guy here that custom makes them so we'll see what happens there.
As for as the gorillas go. Sideshow says it's shipping them this week. I expect my biggest problem with them will be that the heads haven't been sculpted with the "fur collar" the gorillas
had in the first two films. What will we do about that?

three Medicom Cornelius's! The original green (same as Zira), a

I think I will try to get the exclusives,

However I usually make the WRONG

I think this is typical of we ape fans - we
have settled for mediocrity for WAY too long and we are very
demanding.
That's why I think the best POTA stuff
around is from fans.
I still say the very best action figures I
have are the ones made by Chris Hight.

Good call, I had a similar idea for the Cornelius heads after I
finally got a hold of a chimp suit Corny and noticed the facial
differences. The Escape version's much cleaner, but I'm hesitant
about switching since green Cornelius is one of the only Medicom I
keep sealed. (besides Astro-Taylor, but I have an opened extra of him)
I'm confused about the variations though. I thought it was only Green
Cornelius and Dark Brown Cornelius, besides the Ape-o-naut version?
As far as variations of the other characters, I can only think of the
alternate gorilla soldier. He comes with a different gun, and I think
a different head sculpt if I heard right.
There's curently an auction for a Caesar Land's Ape Chimp, along with
a red jumpsuit gorilla and Aldo:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2622&item=5949017953&rd=1
PS- about the Ebay seller: If you paid with paypal, did you try
getting a refund via them? What's the seller's name and feedback
rating? Maybe we can steer clear of him.
PSS- I'm a bit sheepish to ask this, but if anyone has a loose double
of green Cornelius that they can sell I would appreciate it. Same
goes for Zaius, whom I don't have yet. There's a few others I'm after
but I don't want to overkill with requests here.

at Zira's jacket. At times you can see orange in it.

.htmlI've seen those! Yeah they are pretty accurate looking. I love the
Dollars trilogy, but within a budget. The poncho even appears red in
some of the film posters, oddly enough.
Off topic: I made a small replica of the poncho via that site and the
DVDs for figure customs, including a friends' Man with no Name 12''
custom figure.
Here's some pics if you're curious:
small scale, on a Xevoz Coyboy-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/verde1/clint1.jpg
Here's my friend's Clint, whom I made the larger poncho for. (The
figure itself is an unnofficial 12'' Japanese one, since Clint won't
give out his likeness for toys).

The guy who owns this is actually the guy who created the Simpsons
Dr.Zaius custom, small world. :)

Interestingly, The Man With No Name, actually had a name.
It was . . . Argh! He got me! ugh.
No seriously, his name was Joe Monco, aka Blondie.
A pretty unmanly alias for Ol' Joe. On the other hand,
it's better than Lee Van Cleef's name, Angle Eyes. : P

Some fans believe that since the names differ and the fact that Van
Cleef appeared as two seperate characters, then Clint must be a
different bounty hunter in each flick. But I just don't buy that...

You're right. And you're right about another thing.
There is no direct connection between his characters
in the three movies, though He is called Joe in two of
them, and just Monco in the other. But even in the
fake Spaghetti westerns like High Plains Drifter
and Pale Rider . . . Josey Wales etc he seems
to be playing the same guy. He seldom smiles,
never laughs and never misses.

A director for POTA2? You're not going to get one of the big boys. They
won't want to follow up POTA2001. Most top directors wouldn't direct a
sequel to someone else's movie anyway. Probably it would be someone we
haven't even thought of. Hopefully not the director of "Alien vs.

I don't think it is a prequel to the others... After all, the Civil War was a few years long, so he could have fought in it at the beginning of the war and GB&U could have been towards the end of it...

You know Dave Ballard gave us a script for a tale of a bounty hunter
gorilla in the POTATV universe? Remember? I have not read it for a
while but I seem to recall it was a great story - maybe if you
behave and get another 59 pages of "Going Home" done we will
consider it!
But I think Chris Lawless' script is next in line.....Chris - I'll
pay you double if you get it completed by the end of February!
T, Star Wars is not only a Western, but it is a VERY good western!

it - and the history of humans can prove this.
I don't mind discussing religious things if we can all stay
respectful and not attack each other (intentionally or otherwise) -
and the custom here in Australia is to be respectful and intelligent
enough to realise that you should not discuss personal religious
beliefs or voting preferences.....everyone (even within one
particular faith or political party) just does NOT agree!
Go ahead and prove me wrong if you wish, but I guarantee if we go
that way we will be at each other's throats withing MINUTES!
Let's instead prove that we can make an UNmoderated group work by
being wise enough to realise some things can't be discussed wisely.

I really have to get one of these. Alongside the POTA Glyphs the
pattern on the poncho is something I have loved for over 25 years!

It's all of those.
It's also based on the Quest myths.
So it also has a lot in common with LOTR.

I have them in front of me now. Theres the Cornelius from Pota 1 the same
green as Zira and Lucius. Then theres the dark brown one with the very
pale face but I have a green Cornelius that is a darker green and not so
many
lines around the face??? Any way I have a feeling the Folk at
Medicom played around with this figure as there are definatly three.. Not

have spare Nova loose and I have Aldo, Lucius and TV Gorilla boxed if you want

John,
Good call, I had a similar idea for the
Cornelius heads after I finally got a hold of a chimp suit Corny and
noticed the facial differences. The Escape version's much cleaner,
but I'm hesitant about switching since green Cornelius is one of the only
Medicom I keep sealed. (besides Astro-Taylor, but I have an opened extra of
him)
I'm confused about the variations though. I
thought it was only Green Cornelius and Dark Brown Cornelius, besides the
Ape-o-naut version? As far as variations of the other characters, I can
only think of the alternate gorilla soldier. He comes with a
different gun, and I think a different head sculpt if I heard
right.
There's curently an auction for a Caesar Land's Ape Chimp, along
with a red jumpsuit gorilla and Aldo:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2622&item=5949017953&rd=1
PS-
about the Ebay seller: If you paid with paypal, did you try getting a
refund via them? What's the seller's name and feedback rating? Maybe we can
steer clear of him.
PSS- I'm a bit sheepish to ask this, but if anyone
has a loose double of green Cornelius that they can sell I would appreciate
it. Same goes for Zaius, whom I don't have yet. There's a few
others I'm after but I don't want to overkill with requests
here.

Ya I agree. Even Joseph Campbell has taken Star Wars as a blueprint
for those typical archetype (archetypical?) stories. And speaking of
Lucas, Star Wars, and LOTR, all them them seemed compacted into the
movie Willow pretty tightly. Notice how you can easily compare the

Absolutely.
And since the
Juba comic is an intended nod to spaghetti westerns (should hear some of Neil's
ideas for panels - very wide shots etc!), it is good to hear about these
commonalities!
I wonder if
POTA made us seek out trilogies/movies with sequels and
prequels....?

Seems that way :) I can't
even recall how we came upon the topic, but it's cool to see some of us
have share similar movie tastes apart from the Apes
series.

Seriously though, I know Dave wrote a 'bounty hunter' story but much
like the other TV story which he gave us permission to use, as he
himself said, it could be a lot better and would need an extensive
rewrite if it were to be used.

Well then
maybe we should do a joint group activity seeing as we all like POTA and we all
seem to like spaghetti westerns!
It could be a collaborated effort with
everyone contributing and getting joint credit.
The premise
should be (I think) a story about a bounty hunter paid to get Virdon, Burke and
Galen - DEAD OR ALIVE!
Would the
bounty hunter be a bad guy (like Lee Van Cleef's character), an ugly guy like
Tuco or a "good" guy/anti-hero like clint?
Thoughts?

Funny - the REASON I became aClint Eastwood
fan was that my dad took me to see "Every which Way But Loose" at the cinema
when I was round 14-15 years old. I recall I was extremely don at the time
and it was one of the few times my dad "reached out" to me. He wanted to
take me to a POTA movie but he thought the naxt best thing would be a movie that
had an ape in it!
It made me laugh, and it had an ape in
it. As I do - I set about trying to locate an watch ALL of Clint's
movies. I got the Spaghetti Westerns off the TV on a Betamachine and like
I said I spent hours with the hand held, chord attached remote (that would ONLY
pause!) trying to clickon a frame where there was minimum distortion so I could
copy the poncho pattern. Agai the only similar event happened with me
trying to do the same with POTA glyphs.
There are many connections for
me.

Partly, not to mention
a nod to movies with dogfights, swordfights, etc etc. And it's ripped

Kurasawa's Yojimbo. Which in turn was a Dashiell Hammett novel
anyhow).
Yeah there's a history of Westerns ripping off Samurai films
and Space Operas ripping off Westerns. Star Wars did both.
But Kurosawa's Seven Samurai was remade as The Magnificent
Seven and his Yojimbo was remade as A Fist Full Of Dollars,
almost exactly -- right down to the hanging poles used in the
scene where the protagonist fakes a fight after he's already killed
everyone. But Kurosawa himself adapted other source material
like Shakespeare. Ran was King Lear, and Kumonosu
jô (Throne
of Blood) was Mac Beth, so . . . Fair's fair! As long as it's
good.

I don't think so. I think Lucas wanted as many elements
as possible. Successful stuff that worked. It's possible
that he or his people thought it some of it up on their own,
but not all of it. They're infuenced by pop culture like
everyone else. The Omaega Man was a big hit over five
years before Star Wars was released. He looks just like
