then pressed the image into some scrap fabric.
Oh . . . I could see how that would be easier on a small scale.

I also sort've wonder if Wookies were  somewhat inspired by Planet of
the Apes.  And maybe the Emporer's albino w/dark cloak appearance was
taken from the mutants of The Omega Man, but that's stretching things.
I don't think so.  I think Lucas wanted as many elements
as possible.  Successful stuff that worked.  It's possible
that he or his people thought it some of it up on their own,
but not all of it.  They're infuenced by pop culture like
everyone else.  The Omaega Man was a big hit over five
years before Star Wars was released. He looks just like
Matthias!

It could be a collaborated effort with everyone contributing and getting joint credit. The premise should be (I think) a story about a bounty hunter paid to get Virdon, Burke and Galen - DEAD OR ALIVE!
Would the bounty hunter be a bad guy (like Lee Van Cleef's character), an ugly guy like Tuco or a "good" guy/anti-hero like Clint?
Thoughts?

Ya I agree.  Even Joseph Campbell has taken Star Wars as a blueprint
for those typical archetype (archetypical?) stories.
And visa versa.  In fact, Lucas is a student of Campbell,
Incorporating the old myths into his story.  If you watch
the documentaries on them the often collaborated
together before Campbell's death in.  Skywalker is
Campbell's Hero With A Thousand Faces.  There's
nothing new under the Sun.  Which is what makes
POTA so unique.  I defy anyone to find a parallel in
any culture's mythology or literature.  There isn't any.
The closest you'll come is Swift's Gulliver, but only
if Gulliver went around shooting Houyhnhnms and
mating with Yahoos!  Not quite the same thing, is it?
Boulle's character wasn't as heavy, but still, same thing.

A man in the wilderness with only his horse and his rifle
to depend one.  Clint would have made a good Taylor.
John Wayne too, but he wouldn't look to good in that
loincloth.  And I can't see him jumping from building
to building that late in life.  He was doing True Grit's
Rooster Cogburn and was a bit paunchy by then.

There's a small white disc that I eased out of the body which is in two pieces
(the body) that's on the ape bodies any way. The Astro Cornelius space suit just comes in two and goes straight back into shape. The Astro Cornelius head on the Pota 1 Cornelius body looks just like Roddy on the cover of the paperback and Escape posters. It looks great.

Hope you are well.

The dark or very dark? Anyway I never keep anything in the box as I buy them to display in my office/den. And I don't buy everything only what catches my eye in an artistic or nostalgic way. As for the value of things
for collectors......this is where it gets a bit too Trekkie or Star Wars for me.
Pota had a great and lasting affect on me as a young boy that I will always be greatfull for, so I don't really collect as much as treasure and appreciate them for what they are, reminders of summers in the seventies running around with my friends, pretending I was Galen or Ceaser and seeing the hold world as a playground or Planet of the Apes set. ................
Sorry got a bit wistful there.

P.s. I thought that Lucas wanted Roddy for the part of C3PO or someone as near as damnit, which is what he got.

The dark Cornelius is worth keeping on the card.

It is a "one per case" intended variant.

It is rare and it fetches up to $100 on ebay - but only SEALED!

I have them in front of me now. Theres the Cornelius from Pota 1 the same green as Zira and Lucius. Then theres the dark brown one with the very
pale face but I have a green Cornelius that is a darker green and not so many
lines around the face???   Any way I have a feeling the Folk at Medicom played around with this figure as there are definatly three.. Not including the Astro or the Escape Cornelius I have put together. As for Spares I have spare Nova loose and I have Aldo, Lucius and TV Gorilla boxed if you want them.

John,

Good call, I had a similar idea for the Cornelius heads after I
finally got a hold of a chimp suit Corny and noticed the facial
differences.  The Escape version's much cleaner, but I'm hesitant
about switching since green Cornelius is one of the only Medicom I
keep sealed. (besides Astro-Taylor, but I have an opened extra of him)

John,

So the variation is definite then, I see. And yeah Japanese figure
companies love their variations, especially doing clear plastic ones
left and right.

As for the loose extras, yes please! I need those guys, and the TV
gorilla is my fave amongst all the gorilla varieties, so this is
perfect.  How much for the lot, and what's the average shipping rates
for the UK to the USA?  Or just email me the details, thanks!

As we seem to be attracting new members all the time I would just
like to take this opportunity to welcome all the people who have
recently found us.

Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your
fancy, or start one up yourself!

MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES
TV SHOW COMIC BOOK - GOING HOME!!!

Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and
click on the link underneath the logo....this will take you to the
PDF file of the first 3 pages.

Another new ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES
can be found in the files section of the group or you can just click
on the handy links on the Home Page to view the latest and previous
chapters!

Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.

First up there is the DG Archives group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and year.

There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in
the group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to
be enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/

Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos and files are occasionally moved to save space on the
main DG group

All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's
Home Page.

And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and
all that great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all
those wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family
experience!

If you're going off David Ballard's story isn't he suppose to have
an eye-patch? I agree that he does look sort of "other-worldly" for
who he is. Personally I think he should have a different outfit that
would make him stand out as bounty hunter, but not such an extreme
jacket, maybe more like a cloak or something.

-- Actually the Jacket was Dave Ballard's idea and the scarred eye
as far as I know is not 'borrowed'. These were originally done as
character sketches of Juba (a character from a few of his stories
and you can see by the dates on them that they were done back
    in '03)
If the scarred eye was inspired by another character I don't know
    about that.

When we were discussing maybe doing a comic strip of him he was
going to be a lone gorilla pretty much despised by his own kind (for
various reasons) and as such didn't see the need to dress or behave
like everyone else. He also had a vast custom made arsenal of
weapons, also vastly different from the normal 'Ape' guns.

Wow, lucky I never added the hat that he has described in the
tentative comic script that was written! ;-)

Yes the sketches I uploaded were originally character sketches of
Juba (but could in reality be any gorilla) what we have been
discussing is a possible new comic strip starring an ape bounty
hunter who, as yet, has no name.

We do have a 'Juba' story scripted for a comic adaption but Dave
himself felt it was in need of a drastic re -write and was not good
enough to really use which is why Michael asked for input from other
members to see what we could all come up with on a similar theme.

I don't think it is making it PG.

I think more like it is avoiding making people totally repulsed.

I'm fairly open minded and I like to be shocked but there's a real
Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs) feeling I get from gorillas making
    stuff out of human skin.

However I think it would be cool to slyly infer it!

"What is that Jacket made of anyway?"

    (mumbles) "Your entire family!"

Leaves it open that it could too be a joke! ;)

Anyway I'm with you T - it does not need to be "kiddified" - but nor
would it need to be "adultified". Both seem to bee too....artificial.
Hey, I could be wrong though! If I am wrong, Rory or Cougar will let me
    know! ;)

    Neil,

Personally, I like the weapons cache, and if the jacket has to stay,
then I guess it should stay (maybe the back could be similar to the
back of the soldier's uniform, to kind of fit in). Got a sketch with
him in a poncho? Not sure a poncho would fit into the ape world any
better than the jacket, but I see the point that he has to look
    different.

It seems that the ape costume shirts were all longer maybe to make it
appear that the legs were shorter and more ape like? With even a
tucked in shirt, he seems too human in form. How about a longer,
untucked shirt? Also, since he probably was in the ape army, he
could use more of the uniform. I see the boots, the bandoleers are
great, pants, and I wouldn't mind seeing the gloves on him - this
would probably look good better with the poncho than the jacket - or
a sleeve-less jacket. He should still stand like an ape, also.

    Just my thoughts,
    John O.

it kind of makes sense, because pota and spaghetti westerns are from about the same era of film making.
i love both, as well as italian horror.
btw, i just rented what was packaged as blaxploitation, but turned out to be an older western.
not spaghetti, but lee van cleef was in it.

I'm not saying adultify it.  That would cheapen it.
I'm not saying make an Ape slasher film, or an
Ape porno movie out of it.  There's no need for
gratuitous violence and sex.  Just shoot the
story in a realistic manner and let the chips
fall where they may.  Who knows?  It may
get a PG, or an NC-17.  That's the ratings
board's job.  But I think it'll be, given the
material, a good solid R.  Soften it a
bit for the comic book, but just make
it what it is.  I'd cut out the little jokes
and sight gags too.  It doesn't need
all the tension breakers.   It needs
to be tense!  Not some self parody.
Just make it a great movie.
    Then it will be great!

How about a longer, untucked shirt?  Also, since he probably was in the ape army, he could use more of the uniform.  I see the boots, the bandoleers are
great, pants, and I wouldn't mind seeing the gloves on him - this
would probably look good better with the poncho than the jacket - or
a sleeve-less jacket.  He should still stand like an ape, also.

Agreed... As I said last night, he needs to be dressed more like an ape... I still say drop the whole jacket or poncho though!!

We covered that last night... I'd basically dress him the way Zon (the Dragoon) was dressed... And, if it comes down to it, if you guys absolutely "insist" on something, then choose a poncho over the trenchcoat... At least Apes wear ponchos (the poor farmer Polar did anyway)... But make it Gorilla colors... But no trenchcoat!!!!

I know I don't like him without sleeves... He needs sleeves!

But, that is a hundred percent improvement in costume design compared to the ones from the other night... Change it to a cloth poncho though, so it's not so long, and keep his arsenal all "ape looking" guns... Give him an "Ursus" style pistol, not the incorrect "lugar" style like the tv show gave them...

I agree he needs to keep the sleeves. I do like the long spaghetti

    Subject: Return DVDs have arrived!
    .html
I got my "Return" DVDs yesterday and finally after 30 years of waiting
I was able to watch these ape toons!

Thanks a million to Hunter for collecting/editing/producing these, all
the people who contributed tape sources and to Terry for copying and
    distributing them.

I only watched the first episode "Flames of Doom" so far. The
animation while sketchy in some places was actually a lot better than
I imagined it would be. The intro was great and I thought the
accompanying music was great (different enough to be original but
definitely inspired by the movie soundtracks).

    A few notes:
    - The opening shot of the astronauts in the spaceship doesn't mention
anything about the mission, just about the time dilation. We do
however clearly see that the planet they are falling towards is earth
with a clear distinctive North America outline. Once in the desert,
they comment that they do not know where (althought Judy mentions that
it looks like a familiar place). In the end the just say they are
going to head out "whereever they are". So it isn't 100% clear from
this episode alone that the astronauts even know they are on Earth.

    - One one Astronauts mentions that they are now in the year 3979. But
to emphasize this the show his LED watch which simple displays the
year as 79. Duh! Yeah he could have deduced it from the ships
chronometer, but why show a wristwatch? And if the wristwatch was
supposed to be a more sophisticated scientifc timepiece, then it
should have displayed all the digits in the year. (I dunno, it just
    bothered me...)

    - At the begining when we first see Cornelius making a speech in the
'courtroom', the image sometimes switches to "Zira" and she has bushy
eyebrows that would make Brooke Shields and Groucho Marx blush. I mean
these were BIG. Later on when Zira is shown the massive eyebrows are
gone. Was this just a mistake for those first few scenes or was that
not supposed to be Zira at all?

I hope that all the others who've ordered copies get theirs soon to
and we can comment on them. I guess mine arrived earlier since I'm in
Canada too, although I don't think it should take more than a day or
so at least for US deliveries. Those 'across the pond' (in either
direction) may have to wait longer.

    Yes, the scar is fine...

Its a fine line between intimidating bounty hunter and the bounty hunter hired to kill Kermit the frog in the Muppet Movie... so far great job. Great idea too.

That's true, even though I don't know the bounty hunter you're talking about... But, I agree with you, because it's also a fine line between having an APES bounty hunter that still would fit into the context of POTA and going the way of ADVENTURE comics... And the first pictures that were posted on him gave the impression of ADVENTURE style...

Hey if you have him run into some Zombies while tracking the fugitives... who knows?

No Zombies, make it Mutants... But preferably neither of the two...

While working on issue 13, I decided to go back and re-scan a few of the pages from issue 12 that I wasn't entirely happy with. While I'm trying not to be too picky in cleaning these pages, both in the interest of keeping a weekly schedule and to preserve as much of the original experience as possible, printing errors and all, I felt that Ploog's artwork in these issues deserved a little extra time and work. I re-scanned pages 4, 6, 8 and 10 and sent Hunter revised PDFs for parts 1 and 2 of issue 12. Those who wish can now download these corrected files from Hunter's site.

Issue 13 will be available by the end of the week.

    =======================================================

I disagree. Horse-hide would make for a better coat than human-hide.
Besides, I think it'd be better (and equally gruesome) for the Apes
to skin humans so as to use their flesh the way sheep-skin is used
for certain scrolls. The word "vellum" denotes such writing material
(for example, a number of the Dead Sea Scrolls were made from animal
skin, and have been carbon-dated, etc). It lasts longer than papyrus
    material.

The Sacred Scrolls are said to be "worth their parchment" (i.e. worth
the parchment they're inscribed upon); I looked up the
word "parchment" in the ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, and it says
it is: "a creamy or yellowish material made from dried and treated
sheepskin, goatskin, or other animal hide, used in former times for
books and documents". We tend to think of a "parchment" as being a
type of paper, such as papyrus-reed paper, but the word's actual
original meaning referred to the use of animal-skins.

On the planet of the apes, Humans are animals. And, aside from Dodge,
the ones in 3955 seem to be caucasian humans -- LIGHT-SKINNED humans.
Perfect for use as parchment. Ask any tattoo artist!

But Ape clothes, well, I think they'd do better to use the hides of
horses who've outlived their prime. Cows, too. Where else did the
Apes get all that LEATHER, d'ya suppose? They made use of the hides
of animals. And they considered Man to be an animal, remember. When
Zira says, "I wonder how [Taylor]'d do on a Hopkins Manual Dexterity
test..." Zaius exclaims incredulously, "An ANIMAL???"

I don't see him having any problem with man-hides being used in such
a gruesome manner. Remember Ursus' line about the remaining living
humans having the "privilege of being USED by our revered Minister of
Science, the good Doctor Zaius"? Used for scientific experiments and
all that... and then, when they're no longer useful and they've died,
what else would they do with human cadavers? They wouldn't waste any
time or space to give 'em a decent burial; if they treated humans as
pets, then MAYBE they'd be sentimental and give 'em a burial, but
they DON'T treat humans as pets.

I think it's likely they'd use the corpses of humans the way humans
in former times used animal hides -- for the making of parchment, the
kind that is more durable than mere paper/papyrus.

*** If you'll recall, the Ape Army didn't show up until some time
afterward. At the time when Nova finally found her voice, there
weren't any apes around -- only a bunch of fleshy-headed mutants.

After Nova rasps out, "Taylor!" and the astros do a number on the
Negro, they spend some time trying to get the locked cell-door open.
They're in the midst of trying to bash the lock in when they first
hear the machine-gun fire: THAT is the first moment they have any
inkling that the Ape army has actually "arrived".
