.htmlExcellent "quick sketches", Neil!
The sleeves makes it look cleaner, more POTA, more intelligent, but
the sleeve-less makes him look more savage/ ruthless. I think the
bandoleers on the inside make him look more intelligent, outside/more
ruthless. They're all good, so which ever one fits his personality,
I guess.
Great ape posture.
Needs one more thing - a glyph on his shirt, or his sleeve(s) or his
boots? What about a cigar? I can just hear Cougar groaning, now.
Even though Julius had a cigar (and no sleeves), it might be too
much, but maybe he should be a hard drinker, then.
I wouldn't mind seeing what Neil could do with the poncho (Like
Cougar suggested), since these are quick sketches, they probably
don't take anytime at all. ;)
I agree that it should LOOK POTA. If this idea takes off, I don't
think anyone wants to look back in a couple years and laugh at it, or
regard it as a joke. To error on the conservative side would
probably be best.
Cougar, how about the crossbow?
And how about the face of the regular Mego soldier ape for a
distinctive look?

i was reflecting on this group's consensus that the pota series is kid-oriented (while looking at the pota movie posters on my wall) and i noticed that each movie contains many adult themes.

I'm not saying adultify it. That would cheapen it.
I'm not saying make an Ape slasher film, or an
Ape porno movie out of it. There's no need for
gratuitous violence and sex. Just shoot the
story in a realistic manner and let the chips
fall where they may. Who knows? It may
get a PG, or an NC-17. That's the ratings
board's job. But I think it'll be, given the
material, a good solid R. Soften it a
bit for the comic book, but just make
it what it is. I'd cut out the little jokes
and sight gags too. It doesn't need
all the tension breakers. It needs
to be tense! Not some self parody.
Just make it a great movie.
Then it will be great!

outlived their prime. Cows, too. Where else did the Apes get all that
LEATHER, d'ya suppose? They made use of the hides of animals. And they
considered Man to be an animal, remember. When Zira says, "I wonder how
[Taylor]'d do on a Hopkins Manual Dexterity test..." Zaius exclaims
incredulously, "An ANIMAL???"
I think that leather was a prized commodity. That's why
the
more important an Orang was the more glyphs he had. It
was a status symbol, since they weren't raising cattle for
beef. Like Lucias said, "Whaddya expect? An Ape's new
suit?" No doubt they were expensive. They may have only
had a good one and an everyday one. You may have noticed
that Zira's old jacket was nowhere to be seen in Escape. It
was probably left behind in favor of her good one. More likely
they just made new ones for that movie, but it makes a nice
backstory.

Yeah, I recall that during the Flame Wars, it was
suggested that, to avoid arguments, controversial
themes be avoided. Drop religion, sex, guns and
politics and try and talk about Apes. See how far
you get. It's like on King of the Hill when Hank and
his buddies are having a beer in the ally. Uhhh . . .
Those talkin' monkeys sure are cute, aren't they.

That's twisting it T.
My suggestion would be stop talking about
our own personal religious, political (including NRA) preferences and ideas
(like WE would KNOW!) and attacking each other for what the other
believes.
Nobody EVER said don't talk about the
religious, political and sexual subject matter that makes POTA what it is,
although some tried to claim that because they were trying to win an
argument.
As I recently said, we need to have the
wisdom to know that some things can't be discussed wisely, and I would suggest
we just avoid those things (gee - we are still averaging around 1000 posts a
month WITHOUT attacking each other!).

Yeah, I recall that during the Flame Wars, it was
suggested that, to avoid arguments, controversial

By the way, the guy who created the makeup for this guy was not John Chambers, but William Tuttle, who won a Special Oscar for makeup just a few years before Chambers did for APES.

I've created a file in the photo section of this group. It's called "Save the Chimps" and in it are two aerial photos from the company I work for here in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. About 90
miles north of us, near Ft. Pierce, a group called "Save the Chimps" is building a compound that when finished will be the home for nearly 300 hundred chimpanzees, former lab animals and those used in animal
acts. (Who knows? Maybe Baby Milo will live there.)
The company I work for has been documenting the construction of this site for about a year now and I thought I'd share it with you.
To learn more about "Save the Chimps" here's a link to their website: http://www.savethechimps.org/about.asp

already. I honestly do not know how I missed these thinsg when they
were first on. I was a huge POTA fan as a kid (which was right when
the animated series was around)but somehow just never saw it!
Well, now that I have seen the first episode my collection is
complete. Yes, the animation is very basic and repetitive but I still
really enjoyed finally seeing "RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES".
One of the things that struck me about the DVDRs is that although
there is some print damage to the image, the colours are incredibly
vibrant. Fantastic!
I'm spacing out watching them, hoping to strech out the enjoyment of
finally seeing this show.
A thousand thanks to Hunter for the great job he has done (again)
and thanks as well to Terry for sending them out.
I'm off to watch episode 2 and can't wait! <.html

I was looking back through emails the other day and I was
so alarmed at the amount of people who would not even reach into their pockets and pay me $4 for an
issue of Simian Scrolls. I found out later that many of these people got
their free issue then joined up later rather than paying me for it!
You

The
trick would be to give them something for their

Maybe
the "Beware the Beast" print that 28 people said they would buy (and only 5

Oh - it's old
news.
I organised
for everybody in the group(s) and the Official International POTA Fan Club to
get a copy of Simian Scrolls - free.
The deal was
if recipients paid the $4 they would become subscribers and continue to receive
copies/pay for them later.
It cost me
hundreds of dollars. AND I had to send it TWICE because the cash I sent
first was stolen from the postal package!
But hey,

No can of
worms - actually I wrote an email twice the size then cut lots
out.
My point is
that both groups, and POTA fandom in general, entail lots of busy generous
people who sacrifice a lot of time and energy for POTA. However, there are
very few of them who will put up the cold, hard, folding stuff. That'a a
fact, not a social commentary.
SO I would
suggest if you want to gather a decent chunk of cash for a cause, you either
look for another audience, or get some ideas to give people something of value
(that does not cost much).
And I am
prepaed to help.
Michael

You know, I am almost thinking of him wearing something along the lines of what the Minister from PLANET wore, but without such a high collar... If you go with the "poncho", and place a glyph in the same

it's hard to picture what the poncho would look like drawn in a way
that would look cool. We'll see what Neil comes up with next -
maybe a gorilla in a tu-tu with a slingshot. I'm leaning toward the
coat right now.

He casually

It's about time you shared what you've been up to! The pictures are
great.
I think I read about this in my search for Baby Milo. I notice
there is a link on their site to the Chimp Collaboratory. I'm
assuming they are affiliated? There was a woman named Sarah from
the Chimp Collaboratory who was quite helpful in my search for Baby
Milo -- although I still have come up with nothing.
What was your involvement in the project? Have you actually visited
the site? When do they expect to be full capacity? Do you know if
they have plans for more chimps after the Alamagordo chimps are in
place?
Thanks for sharing this. I would love to contribute to a donation
from POTA fans, especially in the name of our own Baby Milo, if
someone pulls this together. I think it would be a nice gesture and
a tangible statement of appreciation for one Great Ape that we all
know in common.

.html I was in a toy shop with two of my kids today and noticed all the
different themes you can get Monopoly as these days.
They had Lord of the Rings, Simpsons, Star Wars and even Kiss
Monopoly! You name it they probably have it!
Of course the one they didn't have was a Planet of the Apes version.
This got me wondering whether we could come up with some ideas for
one on this group. What place names could there be? Would there even
be enough to fill up the board? What would the playing pieces be?
Any ideas?

There's no need for APES Monopoly... Monopoly is still just Monopoly, no matter who's on the board... Having APES on it doesn't make it any better or worse, it's still the same old game... I'd hate to
see APES on a Monopoly board just because "everything else has a version of it." Having the APES name on some item just for the sake of having it on there is pointless... It makes about as much sense as the
APES parachute figures from AHI... There's no connection between the game and APES, so to combine the two is just nuts...

Parker Bros. (or whoever owns them now) has gone way overboard with
their specialized versions of Monopoly. The first one or two ("Star
Wars") were really cool---and unusual. Now they've put out dozens of
special versions, and it's just become an obvious grab for money from
suckers. (Yes, I realize that that's what selling the games has
always been about, but they're completely diluting the novelty. I
bought the "Star Wars" version when it came out, then the "Disney"
version, but I'll never buy another one, even if they were to release
an "Apes" version.

.htmlOK, Hunter... (My ape-ologies to Cougar.) (Sheesh!) We live out
here in the middle of nowhere and the only Monolopy games I've ever
seen are the Disney games (for kids-- which are fun to play and use
smaller bills) and specialty games (designed as fund raisers for the
local Chamber of Commerce). I wouldn't buy a Star Wars Monopoly
game if you paid me. But, seriously, what other versions of the
Monopoly games are there?
I really do love Monopoly. (Takes me back to the days when we would
have a game going all summer, everyone would cheat, trade stuff to
keep the game going, etc.)
I would buy an Apes Monopoly and probably also get three or four
from family and friends as Christmas gifts. ;)

.htmlCougar, that thing doesn't look ANY thing like chutes and ladders.
It doesn't look that exciting either, though.
I more or less agree with the people poo-pooing the Monopoly idea,
somewhat because I think it's kind of a >yawn< boring game. Though,
maybe POTA would make it less so. If it was out there though, I
might buy it since I don't own any version of the game.
So, what about an original game? I always thought that a POTA
game "somewhat based on" LIFE would be cool. Choosing what path to
go down, gorilla betting on how many humans they'll kill in the next
hunt(lottery). Might have to get more complicated than that if
players are able to pick a species - can't have a chimp join the army
and such.

The line comes from one of the few other pieces of Return merchandise. It's on the back cover of each of the three novelizations.
I'll see what I can come up with for disk labels.
