Reread my post.
You'll see that I mentioned
Trivial Pursuit first thing. If
you miss a trivia question
you have to add a piece to
the mousetrap. If you spring
the trap you have to spin the
spinner to see what kind of
operation you get, a throat
job, a lobotomy or castration.
Originally I said that would be
determined by a roll of the
dice, but changed it as a nod
to the game of Life.

Gorillas as farmers?
I never saw them as
farmers, but I guess
that would fall under
the military and labor
job description. Maybe
they join the army just
to get off the farm.

Yeah, there's that one in the episode "The Interrogation" (the one that gets his wagon hijacked by Galen and Virdon...) He's in a white "peasant ape" shirt... Maybe he is military or police,
but if so, he is in his "work clothes" as opposed to their regular outfits (which gives the appearance of an agricultural Gorilla anyway...)<.html

The reason there are female chimps would be because one of the main
characters is a female chimp therefore they had to develope a female
looking chimp appliance, clothes, hair etc. anyway. As there were no
major female characters from the other ape groups I'm sure they
wouldn't have wasted money developing their appliances etc.
Then with the latter movies and TV show they probably just went with
what they already had, agin purely for monetary reasons.

The reality is probably yes... But we are speculating here... It had been discussed on here and I think the other group, that it's more than likely the Gorillas and Orangs keep their females "subservient"
to them, much in the way women are treated in the Middle East and China, etc... <.html

And
I agree if we only had a larger image, I'd gladly make a complete

issue of the
Ape

I just purchased a beautiful old hardcover edition of this novel and
I have to say --- it's wonderful.
Let's not forget the individual by the name of Xan Fielding, who, in
1963, translated it for us from the original French.

My philosophy

I like the novel, but as French literature it's
too over the top to be made into a movie as is. Maybe that 'O Apes' speech

.htmlWell, I did suggest that "there is enough evidence in the
movies to conclude that they may have actually been quite equal."
We can assume a number of different things by the lack of presence
of Ape women in the movies. We could assume that they are too
darned busy keeping the Ape world running to bother going out
hunting (obviously a sport and not necessary to sustain life). The
Ape women that we do see are doing important work. The men seem to
be busy playing and talking and philosophizing. Who is employed in
the manufacturing of weapons? Who is growing the food? Yes, there
are farms. Who organized the planting, growing, harvesting, and
selling of the corn that the male gorillas are destroying during the
hunt? If the men were in charge of it, they wouldn't be mindlessly
driving their horses through the food supply, hacking down the
stalks. I'm guessing the women were more vested in it than the men.
Obviously the women in the veterinary world were equal doing
whatever jobs they did. Equality doesn't mean that someone of a
different gender won't have a position of authority over you. It
just means that you won't be denied a similar position of authority
because of your gender. A person isn't by definition less equal
because of the job they are doing. They may just have different
training for a different job. Are male nurses less equal than
female doctors? That would be silly.
Cornelius is actually somewhat flustered in his attempts to get Zira
to comply with him. If the Ape world had been one where women were
typically subservient, he would more likely have rolled his eyes and
ignored her or been somewhat condescending to her or even scolded
her for being out of line. He really wasn't like that. He was
almost ineffectual.
I know that different ones of us will perceive something different
when observing the same events in a movie, but I think it's
important not to draw conclusions about what we think may have
happened by what we think might have been meant by something that we
assume could have happened. Ummm... just a thought.

*** Remember the scene where Taylor busts loose, to avoid gettin'
gelded? At one point, he dashes through the Market/Bazaar at the Ape
City city-center -- where he grabs a pole holding up a canopy, that
he uses to whack the horse-riding gorilla. If I remember right, he
goes right past a rack of Ape clothing-for-sale -- I think they're
all chimp-green duds hanging up, ready-for-sale [I'll have to pop it
in soon and check...].
Come to think of it, the fruit Taylor is pelted with comes from this
Market -- all the apes grab stuff to chuck at Chuck... and I wonder
if the monkeys who OWN that food-for-sale are pissed at having their
products used as projectiles -- without any ape PAYING for 'em?!
Did they ever get reimbursed for the damage to their goods? Did the
crowd bother to pick up all the fruit from the ground, once the
gorillas dragged Taylor off, and give it back to the vendor?
Hmmm... I wonder if Taylor was pelted by any opers? They grow on the
West Coast, in 3085... I wonder if there are any oper crops in the
East Coast area in 3955? Hmmm...

*** That is one detail on the original "PLANET" that's always bugged
me! Zira mentions a "HOPKINS manual dexterity test"... shouldn't
Taylor wonder about this? Sure, he's hearing APES (Earth-native
creatures) speaking ENGLISH, fer chrissakes... but when Zira refers
to a "manual dexterity test" as a HOPKINS one, shouldn't that be
cause for wonder?
If Taylor had been given a trumpet to play, and had played some jazz
music, and Zira had wondered, "I wonder how he'd do at the Monterey
Jazz Festival--?", it'd be just as incongruous. Taylor would then
KNOW that he's back on Earth, and not on some planet hundreds of
lightyears away.
I think Kim's line should've ditched the "Hopkins" part and just
jumped to the "manual dexterity test" bit. And I agree: the
name "Hopkins" just doesn't sound like a POTA ape-name. It should be
classical Greek or Latin or (if it's a grunt gorilla's name) some
bisyllable like "Zako" or "Neema". "Hopkins" just doesn't 'feel'
right. And it's too reminiscent of 'JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY', where
this manual dexterity test probably derives from.

The original movie also reflects the times in this country. Zira is a strong character because she is a major character in the book but otherwise female apes are rare. one can speculate like you have what they are doing
and I too speculate that there maybe females performing unusual jobs for their gender. Elaine<.html <.html

.html Keep in mind Zira's speech to the BAY AREA WOMEN'S CLUB in "ESCAPE".
She makes it clear that there certainly was male chauvinism in the
society she came from. "A marriage bed is made for two... but every
damn morning it's the woman who has to make it!"
I suspect that most Ape women are "housewives", dominated by their
husbands. The reason so many chimp females are to be seen is that the
chimpanzees in general are LIBERAL in their philosophical leanings:
they would be the first type of ape to extend equality to their
females. The conservative orangs and gorillas would tend to keep
their females as "homebodies".
I think it'd be interesting to see what orang and gorilla females
think of chimpanzee female accomplishment -- do they ENVY them? do
they look down on them for abandoning their "place" in the societal
structure as the "subordinates" to the dominant males? I would tend
to view the orang and gorilla females as submissive to the wills of
their male counterparts, the same way that First Lady Bush is
obviously subordinate to President Dubya -- the way that Hilary
RODHAM Clinton was NOT subordinate to President Bubba.
But it would also be interesting to contemplate female gorillas (for
example) from past times -- such as during Race Wars against humans
prior to the loss of speech by the 'beasts'. I could imagine female
gorillas fightin' alongside their males, the way Celtic women did. If
a Race War -- Humans vs. Apes -- were to exPLODE into horrific
violence, then I don't think the gorilla females would just cower in
the corner. But, once the war was won -- by the Apes, of course --
then they would go back to their roles as home-makers, subservient to
the dominant and domineering males -- goaded into doing so, perhaps,
from 'conservative ideology'.
This is a topic that really should get some more input from others
here, IMHO.

Maybe Zira is having a bit of trouble adjusting to life as a
newlywedded chimp... BTW: Equality is when you get up in the
morning and, if you want your bed straight when you get back in, you
make your half. You straighten your nightstand and kick your
slippers under the bed so you don't trip later on. Then you go
about your day. What happens on the other side is someone else's
business. Control is when you either demand that the other person
conform to your vision or you go over to the other side and force
compliance. (As Zira does by making the WHOLE bed!)
Maybe chimp women haven't yet achieved the same status that gorilla
and orang women have.
Maybe she's just had a really bad day.
You're still assuming that the chimps were MORE equal than gorillas
and orangs. Maybe that just isn't so.

*** I think my assumption is that within the chimpanzee community the
females are accorded more opportunities, such as the chance to have a
professional career -- be it in a scientific endeavor, like Zira's
animal psychology or Kira's medical practice or Carsia's overseeing
of Leuric's glider-making, etc etc.
Perhaps there are occupations/careers where orangutan females and
gorilla females can distinguish themselves in -- jobs that we never
get to see (unfortunately), due to their having nothing to do with
the plots of the stories. Absence of evidence ain't evidence of
absence, I'll agree.
But it seems a bit conspicuous that ALL of the female apes who have
any sort of career at all are ALL of the chimpanzee group. I don't
get the impression that male chimps FORCE their females to go into
the workforce: after all, Zira and Kira are both DOCTORS -- they are
academically accomplished females. In times past, the ONLY human
women who ever could become accomplished in a similar manner were
those who were born to privilege -- the aristocracy (women like Queen
Elizabeth the 1st come to mind). The enfranchisement of women,
historically speaking, is a rather recent accomplishment; and women
from certain cultural backgrounds have an advantage over women from
other backgrounds -- just compare the strides women have made in
Western nations (like the USA or France or Britain), as opposed to
women in nations dominated by aggressively patriarchal groups (like
the Taliban government of Afghanistan, recently overthrown).
Remember, POTA was conceived as a satire on OUR society. It behooves
us to compare the chimps/orangs/gorillas of POTA with their
corresponding 'targets' from the real world:
the 'liberals'/'conservatives'/'working-class+military. Zira, as a
chimp, is part of the 'liberal' group of Apes. Zaius' granddaughter,
being a member of the 'conservative' group of Apes, would have a
vastly different set of circumstances to look forward to.
Think of it this way: Jane Fonda was a 'chimp'-type female, and
Phyllis Schaffley was an 'orangutan'-type female. Jane Fonda, in the
60's, represented the 'women's liberation'-era Modern Woman, as
opposed to the types Phyllis Schaffley represented: the attempt to
keep women in their 'status-quo' position as Wife and Mother -- i.e.
as a non-professional 'traditional' type of woman. Jane would've been
a bra-burner, pro-Birth Control, pro-Roe-v-Wade, pro-Equal Rights
Amendment. Phyllis Schaffley wasn't that type!
Regarding your definition of "Equality" above, though, keep in mind
that Zira tells the BAY AREA WOMEN'S CLUB that although "a marriage
bed is made for two, every damn morning it's the woman who HAS to
make it!" I emphasized the word "has": it is considered an
OBLIGATION, not a mark of "equality". Wives in Ape City are not
privileged to make both THEIR side of the bed AND their husband's
side -- they HAVE to do this (figuratively speaking). Zira was using
a specific instance (bed-making) to illustrate a generalized
condition of Ape women: they HAVE to fulfill a role dictated to them
by the males of their society. That's why she THEN says, "We have
HEADS as well as HANDS! I call upon men to let us USE them!" (that
is, to use their HEADS, not to use their men!)
To "LET" them use their heads. The implication is that ape females,
as a rule, were NOT permitted by the empowered males to pursue
intellectually stimulating careers... except for chimpanzees, of
course. At least to a certain degree. As Cornelius says to his
fiancee, "We BOTH have fine futures: Marriage... STIMULATING
CAREERS... I'm up for a raise--!"
Do orangutan females or gorillas have 'stimulating careers' in Ape
City? We never see any evidence for it. The ONLY non-chimp ape female
we ever see (that I can recall) is the widow being mourned in the Ape
funeral service ("... he was a gorilla to remember... CHERISHED
HUSBAND, generous master; yes, he was a font of simian kindness...").
We are all free to imagine the situations faced by the female
orangutans and gorillas, of course. Given the nature of POTA's satire
of our society's different factions ("liberal"-vs-"conservative",
etc), I think it's more likely that only the chimp females enjoy any
degree of intellectual fulfillment, due to the liberal attitudes of
the male chimps. The male chimps evidently are not (or, perhaps,
are "less") threatened by the notion of empowered females than are
the other two Ape 'races'. The virtual invisibility of females from
the orangutan and gorilla factions, to me, speaks volumes. And not
just of the notion of make-up stinginess on the part of the
production teams responsible for POTA.
In the TV show, one -- just ONE -- female gorilla is ever referenced:
Urko's wife, Elta. She is referenced once -- just ONCE! But she is
never seen. Never referred to again, not even casually, in passing.
She's never seen visiting Urko in his office, or accompanying him on
his sojourns to the various prefectures to enjoy his success at horse
racing. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. If it weren't for Burke needing to
find out something about Urko that he could convey in Morse Code to
Virdon, to prove Urko is still living, WE WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW that
Urko HAD a wife, let alone her name. Burke, upon being asked Urko's
wife's name, bangs on the girder the code for her name. She exists,
she has a name... but that is ALL we ever get to know about this ONLY
gorilla female to HAVE a name we can know.
In "BATTLE", at the scene where the entire community of Apes are
chanting "Ape has killed Ape!" at Aldo... the ONLY female apes we see
are chimpanzees. Lisa, and a couple other female chimps. No orangutan
females. No gorilla females. They MUST exist... but we don't see
them, not even in this pivotal scene, where ALL the apes "join the
human race" by acknowledging the "original sin" of ape-on-ape murder.
The producers went out of their way to have orientals amongst the
humans in the corral -- to remind us of the internment of Japanese
during World War II, most probably (as Eric Greene points out in his
book). They could have gone out of their way to do make-ups for at
least ONE female orangutan and ONE female gorilla -- so that those
two could represent ALL female orangutans and gorillas.
But they didn't. And THAT, to me, speaks volumes about the status of
females in those two branches of the simian society. Chimp females
have it relatively good -- though they aren't 100% equal to their
male counterparts. They certainly have it better than their simian
sisters.

The artwork for all of the characters varies wildly even within the
same scenes. This is especially noticeable in scenes with Zira and
Cornelius in their lab.

Coming back to answer my own question, that's exactly the conclusion
that I arrived at when watching the second episode. I noticed that
Zaius had a distinct different look depending on the angle, but in his
case it was more obvious that it was really supposed to be shading
under the brow ridge.

Cornelius treats Zira as an equal because he chooses to do so. He

refusal to maintain the illusion is what flusters him, not her

.htmlOK -- You make a very good point. I'm not convinced, though, that
there is enough evidence to prove inequality, if that is even a
cncept that would come up in Ape "society"... It may just be
Zaius's own personal issues that cause him to respond as he does.
(He does have issues, you know.)
We know that in "real life" female apes learn faster, use tools
sooner, and take responsibility earlier than males. [They're
smarter ;) ] The lack of females might be attributed to something
entirely different. The fact that they aren't visible makes me
believe that (were this not a movie) they were not servant
homemakers. I'd sooner think that the majority of women had died of
some sort of female genetic disorder or something. (Notice no large
population of child apes either!) I think equality or lack thereof
isn't actually the issue -- although it is easy in a male dominated
society (such as the DG) to get that impression. (Oh, sorry.)
Again, just my [argumentative] opinion based on what I have not
observed in the movies. ;)
