There isn't one. Though Z & Cs were the same in Escape.Zira's
jacket is a different color from Cornelius'. It looks a different
shade depending on the lighting. There's even some orange in
there. But I'd say that the typical chimp suit is somewhere
between avocado and olive green, with just a hint of artichoke.
You might get close, but you'll go colorblind trying to match it.

OK -- You make a very good point. I'm not
convinced, though, that
there is enough evidence to prove inequality, if
that is even a
cncept that would come up in Ape
"society"... It may just be
Zaius's own personal issues that cause him to
respond as he does.
(He does have issues, you know.)
We know that in "real life" female apes
learn faster, use tools
sooner, and take responsibility earlier than
males. [They're
smarter ;) ] The lack of females might be
attributed to something
entirely different. The fact that they
aren't visible makes me
believe that (were this not a movie) they were not
servant
homemakers. I'd sooner think that the
majority of women had died of
some sort of female genetic disorder or
something. (Notice no large
population of child apes either!) I think
equality or lack thereof
isn't actually the issue -- although it is easy in
a male dominated
society (such as the DG) to get that
impression. (Oh, sorry.)
Again, just my [argumentative] opinion based on
what I have not
observed in the movies. ;)

Now, guys go away!
...

I'm hoping for some response from the ladies in this group (the
POTADG). I have a little scheme that I would like your
participation in. I know there are many of you out there, but
without guessing at some IDs, I don't know who you are. Please
contact me privately if you would like to be involved in a bit of
fun at the expense of the guys. This is the only public email I
intend to send, so please get back to me as soon as you can. If you
are a lurker, please still contact me, but you will need to sign up
to be involved in the event. I'm hoping to bring a few of you Ape
ladies out of hiding to claim our place in Ape City.
So, are you with me? Please email me at:
sand_hill_school@.... I will get back to you when I hear from
you and again when we organize. Please send a valid email address
for my reply. You may separate it with spaces, such as dorothytodd

transmission.
For those who haven't visited the DG in a while, the address is:

Yes that’s the one – the Definitive
Collection.
I was originally going to get the “Gold
Edition” but I waited because that would have been $500 in one hit.
At least this way I can fork out the money
for just one season at a time!

Kids of the '70's might remember the TV
shows of Sid and Marty Krofft, whether it was their kids shows (H.R.
Puffinstuff) or variety shows ("Donny and Marie"). They were kind of a poor
man's Muppets. Anyway, their shows have been making it to DVD in "complete
series" sets. They've already released "H.R. Pufinstuff" and two seasons of
"Land of the Lost"; on Tuesday their "Lidsville" arrives (one of my favorites as
a kid; I'm THERE!). Anyway, they've announced Season 3 of "Land of the Lost" for
this spring, maybe May. Our own Ron Harper took over the starring role for what
was the last season of this audience favorite. It'll be Virdon battling
dinosaurs (and Tim Burton chided on the POTA2001 commentary that "Land of the
Lost" was a big influence on the movie). And reportedly on a "Lidsville"
commentary the Kroffts mention they are working on a set for their show "Dr.
Shrinker" next, which starred Jay Robinson as the title character. Robinson was
a main ape in the episode "Tomorrow's Tide".
Anyway, there's some DVD ideas while waiting

.html
.html
I picked up U.K. writer Tom Shone's movie
book "Blockbuster" at the library. It's a fun read about that big budget breed
of movie that many say started with Richard Zanuck's "Jaws". Shone did his
homework and it's got insights from guys like Spielberg, Lucas, Ridley Scott and
James Cameron, as well as Tim Burton and Richard Zanuck. The book doesn't really
discuss POTA2001 but on pg. 291:
"mention the summer of 2001 to
most people and they glaze over into a deep, thoughtful trance - - and only the
patient work of a team of blockbuster scholars has made the following
reconstruction possible. Let the records simply show that a movie called "The
Mummy Returns" opened only to see it's box office fall by 50 percent in week
two; that the same fate befell an entertainment entitled "Pearl Harbor", that a
movie known only as "A.I" fell by 52 percent, "Rush Hour 2" by 53 percent,
"Jurassic Park 3" by 56 percent, and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" by 57 percent,
although the film that takes the prize for being the blockbuster that people put
from their minds with the most speed was "Planet of the Apes", which fell by an
astonishing 60 percent. Needless to say, none of these movies caused the studios
much sweat, since they all made their money back, and "Planet of the Apes" and
"Pearl Harbor" in particular were acclaimed as rousing successes, taking in $359
million and $446 million respectively (worldwide). "We seem to be able to sell
almost anything, regardless of quality. It's a little frightening", one studio
head was heard to remark. The system had finally achieved a sort of awful,
inverted perfection: a summer of wall-to-wall blockbusters, and no
hits."
The book also pinpoints Burton's "Batman" as
the beginning of this Pavlov cinema, where people go to movies almost
automatically but don't seem to like them much:
(pg. 197) "'Batman" soon became the
blockbuster to see, unless you wished to announce your recent decision to join
an order of Trappist monks. It opened in 2, 194 theaters and took in $42.7
million it's first weekend, "the biggest opening in history", proclaimed Warner
Bros., and proceeded to take in $100 million in under 10 days - - another
record, breaking Hollywood's four-minute mile. But it also slid from pole
position faster than any movie that has ever made that much money (at that
time), too, taking just $30 million in it's second weekend, a drop of 25
percent. Blockbusters never used to fade like this - - "E.T." had stayed at the
top for 10 weeks, and increased it's grosses as it went along, while "Back to
the Future" had stayed up there for 13. But "Batman" came and went in the blink
of an eye - - that year, even "Look Who's Talking" had greater staying power at
the number 1 spot. The most popular movie of all time was also just the flavor
of the month. Far more so than "Jaws", it marked the beginning of the long, slow
erosion of audience word of mouth - - asked how much influence he thought the
negative reviews in "Variety" and "Time" would have, (producer Jon) Peters
responded, "None" - - and with it, a crucial shortening of the audience's
reaction time, which is to say our ability to respond to a movie, and then
signal our collective approval or dislike by either staying away, or flocking in
greater numbers. Who could tell, looking at "Batman"'s grosses, and their
tail-off, to what degree people had enjoyed the film or not? "The audience can
smell it faster than we can sell it", Spielberg had said of "E.T."'s release. As
of 1989, we had just a little less time in which to do so. The art of selling
bats had caught up with the art of smelling rats.
" "Batman" was the movie Hollywood had been
waiting for. Up until this point, the studio executives had not been under the
illusion that they could manufacture these things themselves. They could, in
(studio exec) Sid Sheinberg's phrase, seek to put lightning in a bottle, but as
that phrase revealed, they saw themselves as being in the bottling business, not
the lightning business. For the llightning, they still had to wait on the talent
- - those erratic creatures, the writers and directors. "Batman" was different.
Peters and Guber had pulled together a great-looking package, sprinkled it with
stars and synergistic tinsel dust, picked the wrong director, ridden roughshod
over him, made an okay movie, and then bulldozed their way into the public
consciousness for long enough to make it, briefly, the fastest grossing movie
ever. THAT got the studio's interest, for that, they knew a little bit more
about. That, they know how to do. The signal it sent out was as clear as the
batsignal above Gotham City: if you build it, they will
come".

Yes there were 3 seasons
season 3 is considered the worst
Until the new season box set comes out i won't cast my opinion
but Ron Harper's character does remind me of his POTA character in terms of
personality and style
but he also seems like a clone of the character he replaces in the land of
the lost series since the writers cast him with basically the same personality
as the kids father
I do have season 1 and 2 box sets on dvd <.html <.html

Yes, season 3 is considered the worst but Ron Harper still
considers it better than POTA. They also did an '80's version that I heard
sucked. And they've been trying to get a movie version going. If they ask real
nice, maybe Burton will direct it. - - - Jeff

DVDs
Yes there were 3 seasons
season 3 is considered the worst
Until the new season box set comes out i won't cast my opinion
but Ron Harper's character does remind me of his POTA character in terms
of personality and style
but he also seems like a clone of the character he replaces in the land
of the lost series since the writers cast him with basically the same
personality as the kids father
I do have season 1 and 2 box sets on dvd <.html

.html I bought the season 1 Land of the Lost DVD set. Me and my 4 yr. old
have been driving my wife insane since I got it. She's younger than
me and can't believe our son can "get into this crap" the way I do.
Of course he's my mini me and likes all the cheesey 70's stuff his
Dad grew up with. He really likes the RETURN dvd's too. Thanks again

Land of the Lost was a fresh new idea and the first 2 seasons are so cool
even though they are aimed for viewers who were 9 years old
some of the sci-fi elements are really deep
the series got a bit rehashed by season 3
Yes, season 3 is considered the worst but Ron Harper still
considers it better than POTA. They also did an '80's version that I heard
sucked. And they've been trying to get a movie version going. If they ask real
nice, maybe Burton will direct it. - - - Jeff
P.S. Happy belated birthday, Terry!

I
think I heard the I hour episodes were to compete with
another similar show?
The ½ hour format was the best!
I watched the first two episodes yesterday
and the sound and picture quality are superb.
Maybe in the future they will be able to get it better but it will be
some time. They even restored Serling announcing a preview for the nest week’s
episode, and after “One fr the Angels” a
movie is advertised for later that week!
It is like being there except for the commercials.
It occurred to me while watching “One
for the Angels” how Serling could make us
embrace the most silly situations! Mr
Death persuaded to listen to hours of sales pitches in order to distract him
from his appointment to take a little girl!
Absurd really, even to the point that Mr Death would carry money
around! Not much science in that
fiction, but encapsulating nevertheless.
Quite a contrast to the first episode “Where
is Everybody?” that includes an experiment on
human isolation to determine if one human could fly to the moon (which they
thought at the time would take around 480 hours!).
I guess this is why I wonder sometimes if
we should let go our incapacity to suspend belief get in the way of enjoying
POTA. However it is annoying that there
are so many inconsistencies.

|
.html When we first meet Cornelius, Zaius chats it up with him and mentions
that he hears he's planning a new archeological expedition...
With the Academy's approval, Cornelius points out.
"It will require MY support, of course," Zaius adds.
"I hope I may count on it," Cornelius replies.
"Cornelius, a friendly warning: As you dig for artifacts, be sure you
don't bury your reputation..."
Where might Cornelius' "new" expedition be planned for? After his
unsettling trip to the Forbidden Zone -- an expedition that had to
have taken several months, given the amount of terrain to map, and
the building of the causeway leading to the mouth of the Cave, not to
mention all that digging -- he ALMOST was charged with heresy, for
daring to suggest his theory of "evolution" to explain the artifacts
he'd discovered in a FORBIDDEN area.
You'd think the Academy would keep him on a VERY short leash, from
that point on. Although, it shouldn't be that difficult, since he
DOES cave from the pressure -- Zira has to say to him, "Cornelius,
SHOW SOME STRENGTH!" to get him to speak up in favor of
his "brilliant" hypothesis. He seems to be easy to intimidate: he
wants to be a success at his work, and the threat of having his
Academic credentials taken away from him probably scared him
straight.
I wonder if his "new" expedition is, perhaps, an attempt to further
the orthodox version of Ape History -- rather than his table-turning
theory of Evolution -- so that he's essentially "sucking up" to the
Powers-That-Be? If he's looking for the Academy's approval, what
better way than to take on a job that will only bolster their
censored view of history? It would put him in their good graces --
and that SEEMS to be what Cornelius has been cultivating in regards
to Zaius. Zaius is quite chummy with him in their first scene
together, almost as if Zaius had not felt he had to push any harder
the notion that Cornelius' ideas were Heresy. Cornelius had gotten
the point, and taken it to heart, and was now towing-the-party-line.
And so, Zaius could be all chummy with him, like an amiable best-of-
friends. As long as you don't piss him off, he's a "nice guy".
I'd bet that Cornelius' new expedition is planned to be something 180
degrees different than his last expedition to the Forbidden Zone.
Something that wouldn't ruffle any official feathers. A "safe" and
not "dangerous" bit of archaology. Anything to be a success at his
job (and to warrant that raise he mentions), and to avoid being
blacklisted/blackballed.
If only Taylor hadn't shown up, and prompted his uppity wife Zira to
bring to mind his officially-condemned yet brilliant ideas about the
prehistorical Past...!

No, it's dated 1974, the year the TV series premiered... Also, if you would try to say it was RETURN beased, then explain the Ape City... In the RETURN series, it looks like a "human" city, whereas on the

There were (I think) three different "Sake N' Mold" toys sets and also two different "Chip away" sets... the first being a mold in a cup where you pour a plaster compound in and it sets up a
micro statue. Bummer thing about these sets were you had to destroy the mold to accomplish this task. The chip away was a small block of a crumbly plaster with it you got in the kit a small plastic hammer and
chisle. with this said small hammer and chisle you had to chisled small parts of the crumbly plaster from the harder set plaster staute in the block to reveal the statue to paint.
These two different art/toy projects I seem to remember seeing... at least in a book. I do have a "Crazy Soap" which had a POTA themed set. This was a moldeling compound you could play with in the
bath. Every one you find today will be stained and the soap has bled through the package. Really makes you weanna lather up with that huh?

There were actually 7 Mix N Molds (Cornelius, Galen, Urko, Virdon, Burke and two different versions of Zaius). Kassidy has pictures of four of them on her site, in the collectibles section.
The others can be seen on pages 68 and 69 of Christopher Sausville's collectibles guide.
I had the Urko one when I was a kid. It was the first piece of Apes merchandise I ever bought that I was disappointed with.

Neil,
This strip
looks fantastic.
I wonder if
we should portray Ursus' wife as a silly, brainless female and sugest they are
all in that category? ;)
Ladies in
this group, what are you thinking the characteristics of "Mrs. Ursus"
are?
By the way,
did the novel or early scripts (or ANYTHING) give Mrs Ursus a
NAME?

I notice that the outfit that Mrs. Ursus is hanging matches the one worn by the female gorilla in strips 10 and 14. Are we meant to think that was Ursus' wife in his outer office, or is she more of a
power-behind-the-throne type and it's simply that most female gorillas dress alike?

If there would have been a Zira Mix N Mold with the TV characters, it's be no different than the second wave of Megos
(TV based) having a gorilla named Ursus in there, or the way Palitoy had the Megos marketed as "tv series" yet they had Zira tossed in the mix, as well as Ursus...
