      It is written out.

But the whole idea is to generate discussion/conversation!

And if we reveal the answers, what is the motivation to read them?

They are not supposed to be canon, just fun.  A treat, if you will.

However they are done respectfully and they do intend to go BEYOND the movies and show and speculate about things such as the role of females.

If Ursus’ wife DID have a name we could EASILY write that in, although all the strips with her in them are already drawn and the text is inserted.

This whole exercise is really FOR the FANS – it is unlikely I would present WITHIN (as it is) for publication.  It also only works as a strip, but we are considering a few alterations to possibly make it also work as a comic (vs comic STRIP).

Oh, and also, it has changed.  The first draft was lost!  And I have been discussing things with Cougar and Greg P and others, and taking their lead and making some alterations!  Neil has also started inserting WHOLE PANELS and TEXT of his OWN (MUTINY!).

But that’s OK – I’ve been suggesting certain things about the art (and he actually LISTENS to me sometimes!).

It is an incredible chemistry we have.  It is an absolute pleasure to work with Neil and we are a team in the truest sense of the word.

However, I would like to deny the rumours started on the POTA group that we are a couple…..I actually asked the moderators over there how that one got past the censorship board….I’ll get back to you all with an answer (after I finish making love to Neil).

      D’oh!

      Michael

Of the collectors I know, I am not aware of any who have heard of
      this.

Terry, is it on your master list?

      No, that's Urko's wife!

But hey, NAMING character is a real challenge too!

I've seen/heard before that behind aggressive people at work is an
even more aggressive spouse. Though that's probably not a usual
case, it would make sense in Urko's case - why else is he hell bent
on invading the FZ? To go to war? Or to get away from his wife?!
He was probably happy to die just to end the misery! (again, just
      fueling the fire).

.html You caught me,Michael. Here's the confession. For Christmas, my wonderful niece gave me a beautiful photography book of faces of various apes from Africa, zoos and sanctuaries. Each of the photos has the ape's name. Many of the names are African with some exceptions(there is a James and a Lulu etc.) So these names belong to real live apes. The name of the gorilla character in my story After Battle(on the pota group)Shanga is from this book as well. I just prefer apes to not have modern western human names but it is very difficult to come up with names for characters. Elaine<.html

I think we all have different reasons for choosing different names - but I wonder if there is a specific naming convention for the POTA Characters?

      No but I did.
      I was thinking of Nair.
      Did I spell that wrong?
Anyway. If it's the German pronunciation
it is very easy to remember.  Whenever
you see the ie ei vowel combination,
you only pronounce the second letter,
and that is pronounced as a long vowel,
like it has a line over it.  So in that spelling
it would be pronounced Niira.  Like it was
spelled Nyra.  So to have it pronounced like
Zira, Germanic, you'd have to switch the ei
to ie and spell it Niera.  But I would just
      spell it Nira.

Yeah, Roddy almost won an Oscar as Octavian
in Cleopatra.  It was a nomination screw up.
He was nominated in the Best Actor category.
Which, for that film, was Richard Burton and Rex
Harrison.  If he'd been in the in Supporting Actor
he may well have won.  An Oscar head scratcher.

      New nominations are announced tomorrow.

Michael...I'm sure the Colorforms came wrapped in
plastic.....as it would have fallen apart on the store
shelves. and I recall seeing one on ebay...mine is
opened and well played with from my youger days...but
I still have all the pieces. haven't looked at it in
      years....!

      Excellent!

I'll be trying to immortalise some more toys too in the near future.

Something I felt was sadly missing in Sauseville's book was a commentary and analysis/discussion of the different aspects of the toys.

I'd love to get a date on the release of these and others too, if anyone has any ideas!

Uhh true . . . Some list POTA as a '67 flick, but that's just the year production began.  It wasn't released until '68.  So it's actually a '68 film, and the merchandising came later.

Uhh true . . . Some list POTA as a '67 flick, but that's just the year production began.  It wasn't released until '68.  So it's actually a '68 film, and the merchandising came later.

      Exactly right...

      Subject: Ursus' wife's name
      .html
The name "Ursus" means "bear" in Latin. I wonder if the Apes know the
meanings of their names? Caesar seemed to know that HIS name -- which
he purposely chose from Breck's book -- did have a meaning above and
beyond just being a bisyllablic word. Does Virgil (etc) know the
meaning of HIS name? Etc etc.

Galen, at one point in the series, mentions (in a lie he was telling)
that he had been hunting a bear, as I recall. I wonder if they know
that the word "arctic" also refers to two celestial bears -- what we
call Ursa Major and Ursa Minor -- with the Greek word for "bear"
      ("Arktos") coming into play?

How's about naming Ursus' wife "Ursula"? The name means "she-bear",
and I could imagine Ursus -- upon meeting a gorilla chick whose name
complements his own -- thinking that they'd make a good couple.

Another possibility: Livia. That's the name of the Emperor Tiberius'
mother (and wife to Emperor Augustus/Octavian). If you ever saw the
excellent BBC production of "I, Claudius", you'll see what I mean.
Livia was a manipulative "power-behind-the-throne" type of woman. The
mother -- who has since died -- from the first season of "THE
SOPRANOS" was named after her. If, in "WITHIN THE POTA", Ursus' wife
is perhaps supposed to be a power-wielding manipulative type of
person, then "Livia" would be a good choice for a name.

Just one note: isn't it strange that two female ape names, Zira and
Kira, LOOK like they should rhyme with each other, but don't? Kira
rhymes with Tyra (as in Tyra Banks, hubba hubba), rather than Zira,
which rhymes with Indira (as in Indira Gandhi, not so hubba).

Perhaps, if there IS an alphabetic meaning to each glyph symbol, the
spellings of the letter "i" in each name is slightly different, so
that the single English letter "i" transliterates two distinct
vowels, a "long i" (pronounced like the pronoun "I") and a "short i"
(pronounced like the "i" in "knit"). Just a thought...
