I LOVED IT until the end. I kind of agree with Dr. Zauis Davis on his points. I really haven't had that much fun and haven't been so entertained by a comic since I was a kid. I forced
myself to stop reading the updates you made so I could read the WHOLE thing at once and was surprised it was today. But it really was a blast, but I was hoping for a long ride. I know its probably VERY time
consuming, but I would rather wait than have such an abrupt ending. Awesome work nonetheless.

*** "Laura" as in "The First Lady of the USA", Mrs. Bush. She seems
like a nice lady, and has a nice smile & all... but I don't get the
impression that she was at all opposed to her husband's policy of pre-
emptive war against Iraq. She's probably as gung-ho for it as all the

face. She appears to be a smiling, cookie-baking, June Cleaver-type
of Republican wife. Nobody ever doubted that Hillary Rodham-Clinton
was an avid policy-making partner in the Clinton White House (witness
her current job as a Senator in New York State), but Laura Bush has
the opposite vibe going.
And maybe, just maybe, that's all part of the cleverness of the
current forces in power over here. Maybe she IS more involved behind-
the-scenes than any of us would ever suspect. Maybe, in the evenings
when she and Dubya are alone, she steers him in the direction she
wants him to go. Maybe she's more of a motive force behind this
administration's policies than Karl Rove, it that's at all possible!
But you'd never suspect it, watchin' her on TV. She plays her role
perfectly. Remember all those anti-Hillary books that came out during
the last decade? Think we'll ever see any anti-Laura Bush books
hittin' the shelves any time soon? Course not! She learned to keep a
low profile, from having seen Hillary become a target by keeping a
high profile.

*** Helen, SOMEbody didn't do their homework...
The name "Livia" comes from "Livius, -a, -um": the name of a Roman
gens (CASSELL'S LATIN-ENGLISH DICTIONARY). A 'gens' is a Roman clan,
that is, a group of aristocratic families with the same name,
descended from a common ancestor on the male side (according to the
ENCARTA dictionary); for example, the clan "Iulius" (of which Caius
Iulius Caesar was a member) supposedly descended from the son of the
Trojan hero Aeneas, named both "Iulus" and "Ascanius". Aeneas was the
demi-god son of the mortal father Anchises and the Goddess
Aphrodite/Venus, and that's how the Romans "knew" that Caesar was
Divine (i.e. had a 'God's Blood' in his lineage), and -- although
murdered by Brutus, Cassius, et al., would become a God when he died,
as the poet Ovid describes at the end of his poem "Metamorphoses".
The Roman writer Livy was a member of the "Livius" clan. The name
probably derives from the Latin words "Liveo" and "Livor, -oris" --
both of which mean "blue"/"bluish" in color, and,
poetically, "envious, spiteful, LIVID". Strange that we connect the
color GREEN to the 'sin' of Envy, rather than BLUE. Then again, the
phrase "to become blue-in-the-face" probably stems from this Latin-
derived notion. Blue was probably a totem color for the Livius clan,
back in the day.
The word "oliva" in Latin does mean "olive" -- and metaphorically
means "peace", as when someone "extends the olive branch" (i.e. tries
to make peace with an enemy). But it's a Latin word, not a Hebrew
word. The Hebrew word for peace is "Shalom" -- as in 'Jerusalem',
from "iyr" + "shalom": City-of-Peace. Without a doubt, the most
incorrectly named place in the history of the planet! Also, the
name "Solomon" (written in Hebrew as ShLoMoH) derives from the word
for "peace".
Same goes for the name "Salome" (from the story in the New Testament
about the head of John the Baptist ending up on a platter). The POTA
connection? Zira leaves her baby (named "Milo") with Heloise, and
takes the primitive ape's female baby (named "Salome") with her and
Cornelius, knowing they'll all die when Hasslein finds 'em. Hardly
a 'peaceful' end for that doomed little chimp. Ah, but at least the
talking chimp baby survived... and wasn't his life worth more than
the life of the first chimpanzee ever to be born in a circus? I
wonder if Caesar ever had a hard time falling asleep, knowing that
his life would've been over before it really could begin, had not
another life been put in harm's way, in order to safeguard his life.
Zira did what she did, knowing that that little female chimp would
die. And that HER OWN child would survive. Zira, in her own way, was
a bit like Livia (from Roman History): just as Livia (probably)
killed off all sorts of people just so that HER son (Tiberius) could
become the Emperor of Rome, Zira sees to it that HER son
(Milo/Caesar) becomes the future "Emperor Ape"... by seeing to it
that a surrogate chimp-baby is killed when Hasslein finds and kills
them. And how does he find them? Zira herself leaves her "carpetbag"
in that oil derrick area, KNOWING that it would be found... leading
Hasslein to the derelict ship where she KNEW they'd be cornered and
killed.
Quite the schemer, that Zira. And RUTHLESS. She doesn't even let her
husband know what she's up to: when they're on the ship, Cornelius
goes to find a cleaner area after Zira hints for him to leave her and
the baby alone, because... "He wants feeding." (ESCAPE screenplay,
page 96, Scene 134)
Get that, everybody? HE wants feeding. HE! Not even Cornelius knows
that the baby chimp Zira's cuddling and saying "Ma-ma-ma-ma" to is
NOT his son "Milo", but is the month-old female chimp "Salome" that
Zira switched at the circus. If Cornelius was "in" on the Plan, then
Zira would've referred to the chimp-baby as a "SHE".
Armando must've known, though, that Zira switched babies. When the
cops show up to check out his circus, he goes out of his way to show
them Heloise and the baby chimp (which we later learn will have
inherited the ability to Speak). He tells them: "Heloise has been
with the circus for seven years ... and the baby's birth was
registered sixteen days ago. Look how he's growing!" (ESCAPE
screenplay, page 92, Scene 119)
Look how "HE" is growing! But when we first saw these circus apes,
Armando said (to Lewis Dixon): "Say hello to Heloise and your
goddaughter Salome." LEWIS' VOICE: "Hello, Salome." (ESCAPE
screenplay, page 82, Scene 105)
GodDAUGHTER. A female. Armando refers to 'her' as a MALE ape when the
cops check out his circus, though... so he KNOWS Zira switched 'em.
But Zira refers to Salome as a "HE" when she's alone with her husband
in the derelict ship. "He wants feeding." Why doesn't she trust
Cornelius with the truth? Cornelius knows she gave birth to a boy: in
Scene 108 (page 84), Cornelius asks "What are we going to call...?"
and Lewis (smiling) says, "Him." And Zira names the baby, "Milo."
Cornelius knows, then, that it's a MALE baby born to his wife... so
why doesn't she clue him in later, at the ship, that she's switched
babies, and say that "SHE wants feeding" rather than "HE wants
feeding"?
Perhaps she doesn't think Cornelius has the backbone to go through
with her plan, which involves the purposeful death-by-martyrdom of
some other ape mother's child in place of their talking baby. Zira,
in PLANET, had to get uppity with her milquetoast husband when she
said, "Cornelius, SHOW SOME STRENGTH!" Then again, Cornelius is
feeling guilty over having inadvertently killed the young orderly
earlier. In the novelization, at the end of Chapter 19, Pournelle has
this paragraph:
They will demand my child's life as the price of that boy's blood, he
thought. I do not know how I know this, but I do know it. My child's
life for that boy. (page 134)
Maybe Zira thinks that Cornelius wouldn't be able to handle the
truth, any more than he could handle the death of yet another
innocent life because of them. So... best keep him ignorant. Let him
think that when Hasslein kills the baby it's really their talking
baby that's dying. Cornelius dies not knowing that his son would live.
But ZIRA, when she dies, knows what she knows. She kept even her
husband in the dark. Oh, maybe he suspected something... but he never
confronts her about it. He never raises an eyebrow and
says, "Uh, 'he' wants feeding, Zira? Don't you mean 'she' wants
feeding?"
What do you all think? Does Cornelius know Zira switched babies? Or
is he ignorant of that, as I think he is? Did he truly try to keep
himself, Zira, and "their" baby alive... only to have Zira
manipulating events around them all, orchestrating it so that SHE
would die, CORNELIUS would die, and the SWITCHED BABY would die? All
to pull the wool over the eyes of Hasslein and the others who feared
an Ape-dominated future?
Cornelius asked Lewis for a gun, to use for SUICIDE, just in case
they were facing death -- better to die by your own hand than to be
slaughtered by somebody else, I suppose. Zira pleads, "Please...?" in
support of his request for the gun.
Why would she go along with that, though? Well, she knows they're
gonna wind up dead -- she'll leave her suitcase behind, like a trail
of breadcrumbs leading Hasslein to their hiding place. I think that
Zira, if it came down to it, would HERSELF take that gun and shoot
the baby chimp dead, just so that the human-dominated world would
think she'd gone nuts with despair and killed "her own" baby, not
knowing it was ANOTHER baby. A changeling. Zira would do ANYTHING to
see her plan through to the end.
NOT just because she wants her son to be safe with Armando. No...
She wants her son to grow up to OVERTHROW the humans. She WANTS there
to be an Ape-dominated future. Back in the Future, when Zaius and
Ursus ran everything, chimpanzees were too few, and couldn't be in
control of things...
But, with her SON still surviving, he'd have the chance to change
things, and become the "Emperor Ape" who rules over not only the
Humans they overthrow, but also over the other apes, the Orangutans
and Gorillas. It's her revenge on the Powers-that-Be/Were/Will-Be in
3955, Zaius and Ursus.
And she's willing to kill an innocent baby to achieve this end.
No wonder Kim loved the role! That HAD to be a role to KILL for in
Hollywood, even WITH all that make-up to endure! Say, T, you knew Kim
pretty well... do you think she would've literally killed for the
part? I ask this, of course, in jest...

.html In "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW", Urko jails Galen for the "murder" of his
lieutenant, as well as for having in his possession that old BOOK
that Farrow had found in his "secret cave".
Zaius, after flipping through it for a brief MOMENT (!) says, "Do you
realize that mere possession of such a book is punishable by Death?"
Unless you're Zaius, of course.
Zaius leaves that cell, saying "I'm sorry, Galen... I can do nothing

And he tells Virdon and Burke, "... as I must have poor Galen killed."
One question: What will Zaius say -- if anything -- to Yalu & Anne,
Galen's parents? Do they know that Galen has been scampering off to
the jail, to talk with the two captured humans? Supposing that Zaius
had managed to have the astronauts recaptured -- and, of course,
killed forthwith -- HOW would Zaius have had Galen killed?
He couldn't afford to let Galen have a trial-by-jury, since Galen
would undoubtedly testify in his own defense, and mention that he's
slated to be killed ("executed") because of a Book, etc.
Zaius can't have public knowledge of that Book, though. He can't
allow it into evidence at any trial. So, Galen can't HAVE a trial.
He'll have to be killed in an illegitimate fashion. Murder, however
you look at it. For reasons of "national security".
Zaius and Urko will know that Galen had been killed -- and I doubt
that they'd allow any other ape know about the killing of Galen, just
to be safe. The fewer people who know about it, the better. That
would give any other ape "plausible deniability".
And what would they do about Yalu and his wife Anne? What would they
say to them about their "missing" son, Galen? What kind of lies would
Zaius have to cook up to cover their tracks?
They'd have to pretend that Galen was either dead from ACCIDENTAL
causes ("He broke his neck after a horse threw him" or something like
that), or was MISSING, whereabouts unknown. Galen had just been hired
by Zaius to be his aide-de-camp: Galen accompanied Urko to Chalo,
investing him with Zaius' own authority, which Galen exercised when
he ordered the gorilla, "Urko... No." to prevent him from shooting
the humans who had dared to talk back to him.
Zaius, too, would have to know just what Yalu and Anne knew of
Galen's goings-on in the past few days. Had Galen talked with them
about the two strange humans? About the Book? Did Galen's PARENTS
know of the Book? Had THEY seen it, too? If so, does that mean that
Zaius would have to have THEM killed, too?
Oh, what a deadly web Zaius & Urko would've had to weave, when first
they practised to deceive...

Although I am no expert, the name "Livia" is actually short
for "Olivia" -- at least in the name books that I have reference
to. (7 kids, lots of name searching!) I think it's a little
stretch to go for the "blue" meaning, but if someone were to choose
to name their child for that reason, that would be okay with me. We
all have our quirks.
Ouch! I have failed, yet again? Puh-leeze excuse me for not

word. The Hebrew word for peace is "Shalom" -- as in 'Jerusalem',
from "iyr" + "shalom": City-of-Peace. Without a doubt, the most

There seems
to have been a bit of confusion from certain parties about
the story and use of artwork for
'Going Home'
As most
people know by now we were originally going to do a comic based on a story by
Dave Ballard called 'Monument'. Before pulling out of the comic team Dave gave
us permission to use a couple of his scripts and this was one of them.
I put in an
awful lot of time finding reference pictures for locations and had got as
far as doing the roughs for the pages. It was then agreed that the story was not
really workable as a comic and we decided to take it in a completely different
direction and after all the hard work I had done plotting out these pages it was
decided to salvage what we could.
I have just
uploaded the first 6 rough pages to a file in the Files section called: Monument
roughs.
You can
check out Dave's story on the POTA group:
And see what
it could have looked like. You might also like to compare the first 3 finished
pages of 'Going Home' to see how the panels have diverged from the panel
descriptions for Monument.

What we

However we
needed to somehow involve San Fran.
It actually
detracts a bit doing this, but I love a challenge and I do think what I have
done works.
While I do
very much love the TV Show, I don't think anyone would beieve I could sell a
comic/TV Series to Fox that follows the same formula. Nobody would buy
it.
As suggested
by a proverb in the "sister" POTA group (where a gorilla does not know when it
is time to move on), it IS time to move on.
If you want
stories that read like the next episodes of the TV Show, go find Starsky and

brothers in England who have been making there own versions of Star
Wars and Indiana Jones movies from their own home. Apparently they
are posted on the net somewhere and from the clips shown on the news
segment they looked very professional.
This was all done with relatively 'cheap' technology, and they said
it is being done by more and more people these days because the
technology is now affordable and easy too use.
So when are we all going to make our own POTA home made movie? The
technology exists for it to be done what else would we need. A story
of course, make-ups, costumes, actors?

People will
have to trust me that the ending, which is essentially the crux of the story, is
also unrelated.
Monument, for
those who are unaware, is a story about B&V being recognised by many humans
in the city.
It eventually
turns out this is because there is a STATUE, or a MONUMENT of the
astronauts.
Going Home,
however, is about probably 6 different things and even more
plotlines.
While
"Monument" would have been nice to see, and could be a good project for another
artist, I think I can say that the most important POTA cartoonist in the history
of the franchise (especially if you ever want to see POTA on the comic shelf
again!) just does not have the time to waste on something that's going
nowhere.
We would love
to see somebody else have a go at this story, but Neil's talents need to be
preserved for comics that stand a chance of being
HISTORICAL.
It is very
hard to get Neil's time - we should count ourselves as extremely
privileged!
If he had any
sense he'd join a TREKKIE group where they could all pool $1 each and paye him
$50 000 to do a comic (because there are so MANY of them!).
However,
luckily, he has NO sense and chooses instead to entertain
us.
That's why
your feedback is so important - if you don't comment on what you are getting -
it WILL cease!

TV SHOW COMIC BOOK - GOING HOME!!!
Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and
click on the link underneath the logo....this will take you to the
PDF file of the first 3 pages.
Another new ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES
can be found in the files section of the group or you can just click
on the handy links on the Home Page to view the latest and previous
chapters!
Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is the DG Archives group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and year.
There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in
the group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to
be enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/
Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos and files are occasionally moved to save space on the
main DG group
All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's
Home Page.
And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and
all that great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all
those wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family
experience!

been years since there has been good new Planet of the Apes comics
and (risking kissing Neil's ass yet again) never has the artwork
truly looked like it was from an Apes film. There has been some great
artist who have worked on the Marvel comics but aside from the covers
the art "felt" different. And, so Michael doesn't feel left out, up
until this tragic "gag" ending, the story has left me wanting to see
what happens next. Which is the whole idea behind good comic writing.
I know this takes up a great deal of time from both of you and if you
need to be reminded every now and again how much your work is
appreciated (much like a woman) I don't mind. Just please don't give
us this great gift and then take it away. I also hope you don't
spread yourself out between various projects till you burn out and
leave us hanging. I would hate to have to kill you both. Your

I was

However after
getting the feedback we did, I really think it is important to inject more
action. This was intended to be a cerebral comic only, but who can beat
senseless violence!?!
I know now

be better but they don't sell, only rent. You can get
35mm for about 5 grand, 16 for about half that. And
get some editing gear and software. It'd be nice to
have Apemania do the makeups and stuff. I think it'd be
even better than the Ape sequence than Jay & Silent Bob.

England who have been making there own versions of Star
Wars and
Indiana Jones movies from their own home. Apparently they
are posted
on the net somewhere and from the clips shown on the news

looked very professional.
This was all
done with relatively 'cheap' technology, and they said
it is being
done by more and more people these days because the
technology
is now affordable and easy too use.
So when are
we all going to make our own POTA home made movie? The
technology
exists for it to be done what else would we need. A story
of course,
make-ups, costumes, actors?
