.html So. We're at that time of the month when we have to motivate Michael
and Neil (kiss ass) and show that there are enough people in this
group who care. I promise that there are a great deal of us who know
how much time and energy the POTADG is taking from you guys. This is
a great, strong group with an incredible number of members
considering its not STAR WARS or STAR TREK. There are a core group
who post regularly but there are even more who enjoy the group who
maybe don't feel part of the inner circle and don't post often. I
know I used to feel like this. This group is a fantastic source for
POTA info. and even more impressive are the original projects the
group is resposible for. You guys should be proud of all you've done.
I've been a Planet of the Apes fan for 32 yrs. and clubs and fan
groups seem to come and go but I really think this group has a large
and talented fan base that could keep it going for as long as you two
are still having fun and are enjoying what you are doing. When you
are no longer doing this because you love doing it, it will no longer
be exciting for the rest of us to be involved. Yes, there are other
POTA groups out there. Yes, some of us may bounce from group to group
to see what is going on in the POTA universe but that should never
take away from what you've got here in the POTADG.

Just for the record, I just received a set of these from Terry just
yesterday, and they are really cool. I spent a few minutes reading some
of the panels where the text is obvious and it was fun reading the
german translations. (I do speak a little, make that VERY little,
german, but most of it is gibberish to me)
I was curious as to whether the character names would be different
(they are not). Also, they took the pains to reword the signage (ex the
many alert messages that come on the Icarus panels as it
descends/crashes).
But like others have mentioned, the colorized panels alone make these
worthwhile acquisitions.

Thanks for that Alan, I had completely forgotten all about those German
reprints. I don't have any my self but did find this site ages ago that
has the covers and a few of the coloured pages:
I
am glad that I had kept the link to it as it is well worth a look
around. Now if we can just talk Whitty into hunting them down and
buying them... ;-)

Greg, you
really should take some time and write a bit.
Now, if it was a chimp who was loyal to Ursus (or Marcus), who broke the
species barrier and joined the police force, and who happened to share
the same name as the character from PotA2001, that might be okay. <.html

John - did
you get "Beware the Beast"?
So. We're at that time
of the month when we have to motivate Michael and Neil (kiss ass) and show
that there are enough people in this group who care. I promise that there
are a great deal of us who know how much time and energy the POTADG is
taking from you guys. This is a great, strong group with an incredible
number of members considering its not STAR WARS or STAR TREK. There are a
core group who post regularly but there are even more who enjoy the group
who maybe don't feel part of the inner circle and don't post often. I
know I used to feel like this.
When you are
no longer doing this because you love doing it, it will no longer be
exciting for the rest of us to be involved. Yes, there are other POTA
groups out there. Yes, some of us may bounce from group to group to see
what is going on in the POTA universe but that should never take away from
what you've got here in the
POTADG.

How much
Terry?
Michael
Just for the record, I just
received a set of these from Terry just yesterday, and they are really cool. I
spent a few minutes reading some of the panels where the text is obvious and
it was fun reading the german translations. (I do speak a little, make that
VERY little, german, but most of it is gibberish to me) I was curious as to
whether the character names would be different (they are not). Also, they took
the pains to reword the signage (ex the many alert messages that come on the
Icarus panels as it descends/crashes). But like others have mentioned, the
colorized panels alone make these worthwhile
acquisitions.

This is a great Group that has achieved and delivered many great
things over the past couple of years, things that many Apes fans
know they would never have seen without the involvement of many
talented people. Yes we have had people who have tried to rock the
boat and ruin all the hard work that many people have put in to
various projects. So be it, some people will never appreciate what
they've got or had and the rest of us can do nothing about that.
What I would like to see though is a bit more of an involvement from
those who do 'sit on the sidelines watching the game'. We don't

Yeah. I
guess that's what started getting me steamed.
The pota
group is moderated to the point that they would not allow me to announce the
final chapter of Beware the Beast - in reality they did not allow it because of
jealousy and pettiness.
However they
allow a post that made a personal attack on you and I.
They send
warnings to Cougar for "cross-posting" but others can cross-post every
time.
Having worked
with James for years I got to know his style very well - he is controlling and
manipulative and sly.
The split
with him came when my computer was down one weekend and I returned to work
Monday to discover he had placed Neil, John Roache and Dave Dullard on
moderation because they had a view about comics! I thought this was the
most disgraceful behaviour I had ever experienced from James and I refused to
compromise or be associated with the action. James has hidden and allowed
me to be blamed for so many actions - not this time!
So James went
off and had a sook.
But he didn't
have the balls to start his own group - he had to piggyback on another group AND
steal the DG list, steal all the files and remove the internal website.
Thade would be proud of the lovely Tantrum he threw.
Then he
starts turning people against me to the point that the very people I stood up
for, John and Dave, don't even speak to me now.
Then he
starts lying to Helen to achieve more mayhem.
Now he and
his buddies conspire to write things like this:
Then of course James typically lies again and pretends
it is about something else.
These people
are gutless - cowards, they have no balls, no honour, no respect from
me.
And for you
lot to be there supporting them.....well, it makes me wonder how bad you are
going to hurt when Neil and I leave forever and you get to wait on James' lame
projects. And now you'll realise WHY.

The group owner, David, wisely allowed me to announce the new comic

James did not want people to see what a great group this is so he
stole the file and placed it on his group.

rebellious action than her refusal to stand at the end of the speech, and it flowed well from the previous card with Dr. Zaius' introduction. I'd pretty much covered Ursus speech on earlier cards, and there
didn't seem to be a graceful way of returning to it one more time in the space available.
I did have to cut quite a bit to get the entire story down to 44 cards (actually 43 since card 44 is a 'behind-the-scenes' card like it was in the first set). When I was first contemplating doing these sets
I considered doing one massive 132 card set for all 4 films, with 33 cards devoted to each film, figuring that because the sequels were shorter they would need fewer cards than the first film. Thankfully Neil convinced
me that each film deserved it's own 44-card set.

It really is
fascinating to hear a bit about the making of these cards.
The project
was kept a secret for a long time and neither Greg or Neil told me. I
really appreciate that too - the intention was to let me see the end result of a
remarkable project without going through the motions and having the end result
"spoiled" for me! And it really was nice to just see the end product of a
great venture without being involved!
The owner of Rittenhouse Archives
has seen these cards and think they are remarkable.
If only we
could turn them into real sets that we could touch and
hold!

That's right, Helen. The same is true for the 2nd series TV trading cards on Kassidy's site. After I completed those I contacted Neil to ask if he'd be interested in trying to copy the art style on the
original Topps movie cards to make sequel sets. He was thrilled with the idea and before I knew it he already had the first one done and the rest quickly followed. My part is taking a little longer, but hopefully in a
few months we'll have the sets Topps should have produced for all of the films.

It's a legal issue. I work with several printers and none of them would touch this unless I could show that I had a license from Fox to manufacture and distribute these. Right now Rittenhouse has the license
from Fox for Apes cards. Even if I could find a printer willing to look the other way on the legalities, if Rittenhouse discovered I was printing and selling these I'm sure they'd be none too happy.

You mean, like a fan fiction piece? Did it already. The story on the backs of the 2nd series TV cards that are on Kassidy's site was my first ever attempt at fan fiction. True, it's not the most conventional
format, but it is an original story.
I do have an idea for a TV fan fiction which woudl be in a more traditional prose format, but I want to finish the card sets before I put any time into it.

People still collect the silks that came with them even today.
*** As Jerry Seinfeld might ask, "Who ARE these people?!"
When I did a Google-search on the words "Zaius" and "Zira" I found
that, lo and behold, there were 32,500 'hits' for "Zaius" and (gasp!)
329,000 'hits' for "Zira"! Maybe if I had slogged through all those
329,000 g**d***ed weblinks, I just MIGHT have found that "Zira
cigarettes" link -- MAYBE! Oh, YOU knew about 'em, perhaps because
you smoke cigarettes, I'm guessing; but I don't smoke (never have,
never will) and wouldn't THINK to do a Google search on "Zira AND
cigarettes". At least such a search might've narrowed it down to a
few relevant links, rather than the 329,000 links that just "Zira"
brings up. Jeez! Do you honestly think that Boulle named his
chimpanzee heroine after a brand of cigarettes? You tell me, T: are
those "turn of the century" cigarettes named after any specific
person/place/thing? Or is that name merely a random 4-letter
combination? A pack of Camels has a picture of either a camel in
profile or "Joe Camel" (an anthropomorphic cartoon camel), right? Did
those "Zira" cigarettes have a chimp on 'em as their logo mascot? If
so, then MAYBE Boulle would've thought to name a female chimp in his
satire "Zira", but as far as I'm concerned the pre-existence of this
cigarette brand sure seems like mere coincidence.
------------------------------------------------------------
>
> 2. I've seen old public records of people named Zira a hundred
years ago.
*** Show me a link, T. When I Google "Zira", the first couple hundred
links all seem to be POTA-related ones -- and it sorta leaves the
impression that ONLY in POTA-related links is "Zira" to be found.
>
> 3. A male form of Zira, Zerah, can be found in the bible.
*** A "male form of Zira"? T, YOU'RE the idiot here. Certain names
are either masculine or feminine forms of a name -- names like
ANTONIUS and ANTONIA, MICHAEL and MICHELLE, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIA,
etc. But "Zerah" in the Bible is NOT a "male form" of a name which
also has a "female form". Besides, the ENGLISH spelling of that name
that you've given -- "Zerah" -- is NOT how it is spelled in Hebrew;
the name is first given in "GENESIS" 38:30, and it is spelled "Z-R-
Ch" -- Hebrew uses consonants only, except when the Masoretic Text
inserts those little dots & dashes to aid pronunciation. And, in the
Masoretic Text of "GENESIS 38:30, the vowels fill-up the name so that
it SHOULD properly transliterate into English as "ZaRaCh". It rhymes
with "Bach" & "Mach" & "Loch". It's pronounced "Zah-RAHKH". And I
already covered that bit of Hebrew before, if you'll bother to reread
my post!
If you'd bother to read the story in "GENESIS", you'll find
that "Zerah"/"Zarach" is named that for a REASON. His mother, Tamar,
had been 'gotten' with TWINS:
"As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the
midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and
said, "This one came out first." But when he drew back his hand, his
brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!"
And he was named Perez [transliterates better as "PaReTs"]. Then his
brother, who had the SCARLET thread on his wrist, came out and he was
given the name Zerah ["ZaRaCh"]." ("GENESIS 38:27-30, my emphasis
on "scarlet").
In other words, T, Zerah got his name because the SCARLET-colored
thread that the midwife tied to his wrist is reminiscent of the DAWN,
because the eastern horizon is RED-colored due to the symbolic birth
of the Sun every day (this is a birth story, you know); Renaissance-
era poets always waxed rhapsodic about "ROSY-FINGERED DAWN" etc etc.
Similarly, Perez/PaReTs is named what he's named because the Hebrew
root P-R-Ts means "to BREAK" -- which is why the midwife says to
him, "So this is how you have BROKEN out!"
I had already covered the "dawn"-meanings of the Hebrew words that
are SIMILAR to the name "Zira", and that includes the name Zerah, if
you take into account its true Hebrew spelling. But make no mistake,
T, "Zerah" is NOT a "male" version of the name "Zira". Depending on
how you (mis-)pronounce it, it CAN sound a bit like it, but that's
all. The name "Zira" is NOT derived from it, at least explicitly.
Unless Boulle was thinking that his chimpette character represented
the Idea of "light-scattering"/"illuminating"/"dawn-like" -- which is
iffy at best -- then there is no Hebrew word or name that Boulle
might've used when coming up with the name.
-------------------------------------------------
>
> 4. And lastly, anyone who's seen the Lion King knows they had a
character named Zira. I haven't seen it and even I know that. I also
have an old ice cream top I bought on eBay that has a leopard named
Zira, not from the Lion King, and way older than Planet of the Apes.
*** T, T, T... are you seriously saying that Pierre Boulle, prior to
the 1963 publication of "La Planete des Singes", named his female
chimpanzee character "Zira" after a character in a Disney film that
wouldn't be in existence for DECADES??? Maybe the writers of "The
Lion King" named their character after Zira from POTA, but it can't
have been the other way around -- not unless "The Lion King" movie
was based on a book written prior to 1963, with the "Zira" character
in it. I haven't seen "The Lion King" either, but I had heard (when
it came out) that it was a wholly original story, and not one based
on some prior-existing fairy tale (like "Cinderella" or "Aladdin").
And this "leapard named Zira" from "an old ice cream top" you bought
on eBay that is "way older than" POTA... Jesus H. Christ, T, who
other than YOU and the guy or gal you bought it from even KNOWS about
that obscure item?! You make it sound like Zira the Leopard is as
popular as Tony the Tiger. Well, I've never heard of this Zira-the-
Leopard character before, and I doubt that 1 in a BILLION people on
this planet has either. Tell me, T, is this leopard character
depicted as a male or a female? Do YOU think that Boulle based HIS
Zira on her/him/it? Did you find this eBay item by doing a Google
search or on an eBay search? Just where the HELL did you come across
it, and why is it that you expect ME to have known about it?
Oh, as I read down below, you think I'm supposed to be a "know-it-
all" -- or that I think of myself as one. But I don't.
----------------------------------------------------------
> 5. This proves your research is shallow, since a simple Google
search would turn up this last fact on the first page.
*** Which "last fact" are you referring to? The "Lion King" Zira or
the Zira-the-Leopard ice cream top? The "Lion King" Zira does NOT
predate Boulle's novel, so it DOESN'T COUNT. When I did a Google
search on "Zira", I did NOT find that damned Leopard ice cream
thingy. And, hey, I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to surf
through over 300,000 Google weblinks in order to find that Zira-the-
Leopard ice cream top thing. But, hey, feel free to crucify me for it!
---------------------------------------------------------
> You speak with authority, but it all seems hollow now, since you

*** Lastly, T, let me say this: I DID NOT CLAIM TO HAVE DONE ALL THE
RESEARCH ON "ZIRA" (AND "ZAIUS") THAT I WOULD EVER DO. I responded to
your initial post -- on researching "Zira" -- by firing off a post
that outlined the studies I've already done SO FAR, primarily by
looking through foreign language dictionaries and the like (Hebrew,
Greek, Latin, etc) that have been at my disposal because I own the
books in question.
I indicated that I had not done a COMPLETE search when I blatantly
referred to Boulle having served in Indochina -- where he MAY have
come across a place-name (or such) during his World War Two
experiences, which he MAY have used. When I typed that line, I was
implying that WHEN my Zira-research should continue, it would
possibly be by following THAT particular possibility: Indochina
placenames.
I did NOT claim to have done any exhaustive/complete study of the
origins of the names "Zira" and "Zaius". I merely recapped my studies
of the matter UP TO THAT TIME. Read the first two f***ing words in my
last post that you've responded to above, T: what do they say?
"SO FAR"!
What the **** do you think that means?! It means what it OBVIOUSLY
means, you twit! It means that I've BEEN researching (off and on) the
names Boulle gave to his characters Zira AND Zaius AND Zoran AND
Zanam, and...
... wait for it...
... and SO FAR, Mr. Lord-T, I haven't found 'em outside of POTA
references.
Thanks for "illucidating" me on the ZIRA CIGARETTE thing, and that
Zira-the-Leopard ICE CREAM TOP (!!!!) thing, though. It sure seems
likely to me that Boulle named one of the major characters of his sci-
fi satire after a brand of cigarettes and/or a leopard mascot for an
ice cream brand... sure... and monkeys might fly outta my butt!

In the Trek episode, Kirk and an illusionary "Commodore Mendez"
(played by Malachi Throne) fly after the Enterprise -- which Spock
has hijacked -- from Starbase 11 in a shuttlecraft, and the 3-officer
tribunal that presides over Spock's court-martial consists of Kirk,
the vegetable Capt. Pike, and the "not-really-there" Commodore
Mendez.
Did Dehn 'steal' the name "Mendez", too...?

Remember when Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album came out? There's some

*** In my "RAND McNALLY GOODE'S WORLD ATLAS" (17th Edition), the
Gazetteer mentions a "Zipaquira" and then a "Zirandaro" and
a "Zitacuaro"... but no "Zira" (I did check). Of course, my atlas
dates back to 1986, so maybe "Zira, Pakistan" was settled and named
since then. They probably named it after their favorite cigarette
brand, or their favorite ice cream brand's mascot. Or, hey, maybe
they're HUGE fans of PLANET OF THE APES, and named it after Kim's
character. In which case -- unlikely though it may be -- it would be
Boulle's invention that led to this name.

That was his favorite novel. One of the characters in one of

*** The "Lord Jim" source sounds possible -- even plausible, if it
indeed WAS Boulle's favorite novel. The name "Cornelius", of course,
predates Kipling by several thousand years, though. As I said,
there's a Cornelius in the New Testament, though he isn't a talking

By the way, "Zaius" is spelled Z-A-I-U-S, Jeff -- I know you're in
the habit of spellin' it Z-A-U-I-S, but you're transposing two of the
letters. Maybe your fingers get logjammed when you type it; when I
type the word "where" too fast, it usually comes out as "wehre", and
then I have to back-space and erase it & type it in again.

You mean, like a fan fiction piece? Did it already. The story on the
backs of the 2nd series TV cards that are on Kassidy's site was my first ever
attempt at fan fiction. True, it's not the most conventional format, but it is
an original story.
I do have an idea for a TV fan fiction which woudl be in a more
traditional prose format, but I want to finish the card sets before I put any

To be fair, Heston did not want to do the sequel at all, but felt that
since Zanuck went ahead with the first movie, where so many other
studios had rejected it, he wanted to return the favor when asked to
reprise his role. I believe he also only took 'scale' wages and even
donated that to charity. Asking for to world to be blown up at the end
was rather a clever idea, so he thought at the time. But being SF, that
did not put a stop to the series. :)
Look at it this way, by blowing up the world, he forced the writers to
evolve the series into a radical new direction which in the end, I
believe, was actually a positive thing. No point in discussing the pros
and cons of ESCAPE (some loved it, some hated it) but at least it
wasn't a sequel that was set in familiar territory. If he hadn't
destroyed earth, the 3rd movie in the series could have been yet
another shipload of astronauts meeting strange speaking apes.

my "RAND McNALLY GOODE'S WORLD ATLAS" (17th Edition), the Gazetteer
mentions a "Zipaquira" and then a "Zirandaro" and a "Zitacuaro"... but no
"Zira" (I did check). Of course, my atlas dates back to 1986, so maybe
"Zira, Pakistan" was settled and named since then. They probably named it
after their favorite cigarette brand, or their favorite ice cream brand's
mascot. Or, hey, maybe they're HUGE fans of PLANET OF THE APES, and named
it after Kim's character. In which case -- unlikely though it may be -- it
would be Boulle's invention that led to this name.
You need a better Atlas.
My Atlas is at least ten years
older than that, and it's in there.
You're backpeddling again.

To estimate the value of a domain, consider what the value of one new
customer is to your business, including its lifetime residual value and all
of the referrals the customer will provide. Multiply this number by the
number of new customers your new premium URL might attract, including
"type-in" traffic and "keyword" search engine traffic.
For example, if each of your customers is worth $1,000 dollars over their
lifetime, and your new URL attracts 50 new customers over the life of your
company, then the domain could be valued at $50,000 to your business.
If your premium URL attracts 10,000 new customers and they are valued at
only $5 each over their lifetime then you would come up with the same
$50,000 valuation. So, if you can buy a domain for a few thousand dollars
that is worth tens of thousands or more to your business, then it's clearly
a bargain.
In theory, the more premium domains you have that generate site traffic and
new customers, the better.
All premium domains can easily point to your existing site to attract this
search engine and type-in traffic. Regardless of how many additional
customers this domain attracts to your company, it should hold its resale
value and in all likelihood grow more valuable over time. Having a domain
name that is memorable, directly related to your online business, and that
instantly attracts your target audience is the first step in establishing
every successful and profitable web site.

With the quality of his work,
I'm happy for any comic he does.
I wish he'd do the storyboards for
my screenplay. That was all
Arthur P. Jacobs started out with.
