I am a member of both groups and get messages via
email and frankly I don't usually notice which group
they are coming from or which group threads are
running on. I was unaware of all the drama when the
split happened. Just know that by my belonging to the
other group as well as this great original one that I
am not dis respecting yopu or Neil in any way...I am
just a complete and hopless Apes addict and like to
get as much info as I can.....which is why I'm digging
through the last few days of posts ....MARDI GRAS was
great...now back to the real world....sigh...

that I had a huge package waiting for me. I can't
believe no one else has said anything about
this....Maybe I'm the only one to shell out the bucks
for it. All I can say is it is worth it. I've been
waiting for this for 30 years. I thought the Medicom
Lawgiver was the best thing we would get but this is
phenomanal...(spelling)
19" of Polystone 100% Lawgiver......I will be
surprised if people find anything wrong with this. It
looks very accurate to me. The box even has the
"Beware the Beast man" text printed on it. I hope
everyone gets one of these. Incidentally mine is no.
158 out of 750....Has anyone else gotten one of
these?????? I highly recommend them. I know it is
expensive but I have no family to spend money on so I
get it all for me!!!!!! Seriously, it is the best Apes
item to come out in many years......(besides the new
comics that is) ;)
Also got astronaut Taylor...he does look skinny! and
the paint job on his face isn't so hot.....

Betcha the

We're working
on making the comics of Polystone too!
I am extremely jealous...do you
have photos?

I also recieved an email from Sideshow that the Forbidden Zone
Taylor would be shipping soon.
I took the other TAylor out of the box and once you get him out of
the box and displayed, he really looks good. I think the Sideshow
line is 100% superior to the Medicom. I like their size

*** T, it's simple. The word "Zira" is a mere 4 letters long, right?
There are only 26 letters in the English/French/Latin-derived
languages, right? The possible combinations of 4-letter words, then,
is 26 to the 4th power, or 456,976. Now, that SEEMS like a lot...
but, then again, if somebody were to pick a 4-letter name at random,
chances are he or she wouldn't go with AAAA or AAAB or AAAC, etc etc.
Some combinations of letters just don't go together all that well.
When a writer wants to INVENT a 4-letter name -- be it for a
CHARACTER in a fantasy story, or a PLACE or a THING -- the choice of
which 4 letters in which combination has to fit a certain aesthetic.
Think of all those old Marvel comics, where Stan Lee came up with
monsters with all KINDS of weird names. Or "KONG" in "King Kong". Or
those goofy Japanese monsters like "Ghidra". Maybe "ghidra" has a
meaning in Japanese, I don't know; maybe it doesn't, and it's just a
cool-sounding name for a goofy monster in a low-budget flick. Think
of those Klingon names like "KANG" and "KOR" and "KRUGE", etc. Some
names are more likely to be invented, due to the sound.
Thus, the chances of MORE THAN ONE person "inventing" the name "ZIRA"
is nowhere near the 456,976 mark. Whoever named that cigarette
brand "Zira" could have easily INVENTED the word, the same way that
pharmaceuticals nowadays are invented words -- like ZOLOFT and
VAGISIL and whatever the heck James Naughton is hawking on those TV
commercials. Did the person who named those cigarettes name them
after the Pakistan town in your atlas? Maybe he DID. If he did, then
maybe the ice cream company you mentioned ALSO named their product
after that Pakistan town. Maybe. MAYBE. And maybe NOT.
Maybe that town in Pakistan... AND the cigarette company... AND the
ice cream company... AND, lastly, Pierre Boulle ALL CAME UP WITH THE
SAME 4-LETTER NAME BY SHEER COINCIDENCE. Perhaps ALL of them came up
with the SAME word, "Zira", without any knowledge of the OTHER Ziras
out there in the world.
It's possible, T. And, unless I see anything definitive, it sure
seems plausible to me that this is the case. Boulle need not have
known about any prior "Zira" in order for him to INVENT the name
himself for a character in his book.
Boulle was a smoker -- at least, I've seen a picture of him with a
cigarette in his mouth; so, maybe he knew about those cigarettes
named "Zira" and thought to himself as he puffed on one
of 'em, "Hmm... 'ZIRA'... I like the SOUND of that... it's as good a
name as any... so, hey, why don't I call the female talking chimp in
my new book 'ZIRA', too...?"
It COULD have happened that way, too. I can't prove it DIDN'T, or
that it DID. I don't know. And neither do you. Not unless Boulle told
that to an interviewer in some obscure French-language literary
journal that hardly anybody has ever encountered, will we ever know
what motivated Boulle to give her the name ZIRA.
Not to mention the names ZORAN and ZANAM and ZAIUS.
Zaius COULD be a one-letter variation on "GAIUS", I'll admit. Believe
it or not, that name is the male form of the name "GAIA" -- which, if
you know your Greco-Roman mythology, is the Earth-Mother goddess (the
words GE-ology, GE-ometry, etc, refer to the root meaning: Earth).
But I do wonder why Boulle would take the Roman praenomen GAIUS and
change one letter, the G, to a Z... when he also took the Roman gens
name CORNELIUS yet didn't change any of its letters. But, hey, it's
possible. The name "HARISTAS" is obviously an echo of the
name "ARISTOTLE" -- both characters represent an Authority figure
from antiquity whose pronouncements became solidified as cultural
dogma bolstered by an entrenched orthodox Establishment. In that
case, Boulle dropped the "-OTLE" and added an initial "H-" to make up
his wholly original name. He may also have been punning: the Latin
word HARA means "pen, coop; pig sty" and the verb HARIOLER means "to
utter prophecies" -- but, in an alternate sense, means "to talk
nonsense". Boulle MAY have altered the name "ARISTOTLE" the way he
did to also suggest that Soror's equivalent "authority" was
ultimately the source of a lot of nonsense. The type it takes radical
NEW thinking to displace, by the likes of a Galileo or a Cornelius.
T, you say "How could it be a coincidence if as you said he made it
up?" That's the ONLY way it could be a coincidence! Some cigarette
manufacturer gives his product the made-up name "ZIRA"; then, later,
IF Boulle had never smoked a "Zira" cigarette before -- had never
even HEARD of that brand -- he then goes on to write his book,
including within it a character to whom he gives a name that HE, TOO,
ALL ON HIS OWN, invents out of thin air. By SHEER COINCIDENCE, maybe,
Boulle thought that the 4-letter word "Zira" was a name his aesthetic
sense deemed perfect for his talking chimpette.
If the name in question were something obtuse -- like "HIERONYMUS" --
then it's extremely doubtful that two or more persons could invent
that same name. But "ZIRA" is not so obtuse a name.
T, I don't know where Boulle got the name "ZIRA". Maybe he made it up
all on his own. Maybe he liked the name of that cigarette brand,
and 'borrowed' it from 'em. Maybe he was thumbing through an atlas
and happened to see "ZIRA, PAKISTAN" and liked the sound of the name
of that town. Maybe. Or maybe not. We'll probably never know.
George Lucas almost named his protagonist "LUKE STARKILLER", before
changing it, for aesthetic reasons. "SKYWALKER" sounded better to
him. And probably more realistic: a farmer named "STARKILLER"...? Too
improbable. Maybe "ZIRA" was named that for no other reason than
Boulle liked the sound of that bisyllable: "ZIH-ruh".
Think of all the other invented names in the POTA series: URKO, ELTA,
YALU, DAKU, INTA, KAVA, ARNO, ZAKO, OLAM, MEMA, ANTO, MIRO, etc etc
etc etc. How much thought went into the invention of THOSE names, do
ya suppose? Oh, there's probably a village called "DAKU" in Upper
Slobovia, and a dishwashing detergent named "KAVA" sold in
supermarkets in Chechnya, who the **** knows? Who the **** cares? The
impression I got when seeing those names in the POTA series was that
the writers MADE 'EM UP. They "sounded" like the kinds of names that
the apes would come up with, when they weren't stealing 'em from the
Romans ("HONORIUS", "CORNELIUS", "MAXIMUS", etc etc).
Besides, T, I said it "SEEMS like a coincidence"; in case you didn't
get that, the word "SEEMS" was there to show that I wasn't stating as
a fact that it WAS a coincidence. It MIGHT be a coincidence... or it
might not. I don't know. But it SEEMS to me that it is. It's an
OPINION. I'm entitled to one, in case you don't know. I could be
wrong, I'll freely admit. But for you to state categorically that I
AM wrong, as you do above, now THAT is not backed up by the evidence.
You don't know for a fact where Boulle got the name "ZIRA" any more
than anybody ELSE does.
I suggest you do one of two things:
1.) Learn French... invent a Time Machine... go back in Time to 1964
or so, to France... bring a copy of "LA PLANETE DES SINGES" to Boulle
at some book-signing and ASK HIM why he named her "Zira"...
or,
2.) Sell your soul to the Devil, in order to acquire the necromantic
ability to raise up a Spirit from the Nether-realms... and conjure up
the ghost of Pierre Boulle the way King Saul conjured up the ghost of
the prophet Samuel, and ASK HIM why he named her "Zira".
As far as I know, the ONLY person who EVER KNEW why she was
named "Zira" was Pierre Boulle -- and he's DEAD. The 4-letter
combination of letters, Z-I-R-A, may very well have been a random
bunch that several different people have separately invented, out of
sheer coincidence. It's possible.

Just to let everyone know, Michael and I followed up with Rittenhouse after they reacted positively to the card files that Michael forwarded to them. I wanted to ask their permission to print up a small number of
sets using a printer I work with (the same one who did the Beware the Beast prints). To our surprise, Rittenhouse expressed an interest in printing these themselves. I want to warn everyone that the discussion we're
having is in the very early stages. When there's more information we'll let you all know.

I'm not trying to be Mr. Negative here, but I forwarded the link in Hunter's site to Joe Russo and his reaction was that it was cool what you guys have done BUT the images are simply freeze-frames from the
DVD. He would rather see photos never seen before like those from the Rittenhouse Taylor cards. I have to say I agree. Russo has quite a collection of stills from BENEATH, many in color.
But more importantly for me I'd like to see done first an expanded PLANET set, with shots not seen in the original 44 card series.
Since PLANET was released in 1968 I think an expanded PLANET set should be 68 cards. The photos for the cards should be better reproductions than the original Topps cards, but done in the same style. I think
Rittenhouse talked about doing this, but this is more exactly what I'd like to see.
Just a thought.

Hi Rory.
Your point is well taken and it is
certainly a point that Greg has mentioned himself.
However, don’t forget Neil’s
artwork and the very original “copy” of the narrative style on the
flip side (written by Greg and enhanced by Valerie, I think?) – neither of
which could be bettered in my opinion.
None of us knows precisely what the owner
of Rittenhouse wants to do, but I don’t think I would be giving away
trade secrets to say I think Greg would prefer to see better quality stills
(preferably not screen grabs) used if the Beneath cards are printed and sold
commercially. Greg? Personally, I’d love to get shots
of the gorillas breaking the Cathedral door and others used in the fan made “Extended
Beneath” too!
However if they are just printed as they
are I’d still very much get behind them and be very happy to add these to
my collection!
And I agree a 68 card Planet set would be
nice too – maybe with the Linda Harrison set coming this could be done in
dribs and drabs?
NOW – WOULD RUSSO
SEND GREG THESE STILLS, OR HIGH RES SCANS OF THEM!!???!?!?!?!?!
Michael (going back to bed at 3:35am!).

With the recent discussion about the PLANET/BENEATH original double feature, I've had this thought...
You know what would be a great idea is a card set from Rittenhouse based on the original "By Popular Demand! Two APES for the Price of One!" PLANET/BENEATH double feature. It could feature rare photos and
behind the scene stuff from the first two movies, a mega set of like a hundred cards, the first card of which would be a reproduction of the PLANET/BENEATH double feature 1-sheet. If it sold well, then a sequel
set could be a GO APE collection of stuff from the last three films.

I've just e-mailed Russo, who also knows another fan in NYC who collects exclusively from only PLANET and BENEATH. I know they have incredible stills, but how to get them enthusiastic about cooperating with
Rittenhouse is another matter.
Russo is still very bitter about not having made a dime on the POTA REVISITED book, which the publisher claims didn't sell out.
I may take a vacation this year and drive up to New Jersey and New York and talk with both these guys.

Yes, all of the images are screen grabs from the DVD, with some color correcting done here and there where necessary because the images were a little dark. Even the image on the 44th card is a screen grab, from the
Behind documentary. I used screen grabs so that I could have a consistent level of quality across all of the images. I did try to avoid screen grabs that were the same images that we've seen before. Basically I did
about 150 screen grabs and boiled them down to the 44 I finally used, trying to keep a nice balance of the main characters and tell the story of the movie. Some scenes didn't lend themselves too well to having grabs
made, like the fight between Brent and the wagon cage driver. Lots of motion blur. If the DVDs had deleted scenes on them, I definitely would have included some images from those scenes.
What I'm sending Rittenhouse are hi-res jpegs and the layered Photoshop files, so Rittenhouse would be free if they chose to swap out the images I used for images they pulled from the Fox archives. Or they could
take images from a print of the film. We really don't know at this point, because they haven't decided themselves. Depends how much additional time and money they want to invest in it, I suppose. If they use the
files I send them as they are, they save themselves a lot of time and prep costs. But if they feel the image quality isn't up to their normal standards, they may want to swap the images. Either approach is fine with
me. They may decide it's just Neil's art that they like and they want to use that for their own set. Again, fine with me (as long as Neil gets compensated). I already got what I wanted out of working on the set.
Anything else that happens with it is gravy.
Personally, I'd love to see them do a set that covers all the films and the TV series with lots of unseen images. Or one of the "Quotable" sets they've done for their other licenses, which besides
quotes from the films and TV shows could also include lines from the original book (with cover art from different editions) and some of the comics. Maybe if they do print the Beneath set, either as is or with some
changes, and it sells well, it will show them that there is a market for other sets and they'll make those, too.

That's not entirely true... In the original PLANET set, cards 37-39 are all from scenes NOT in the movie, yet they are good cards... They are from scenes originally scripted, but subsequently not in the film... They
make sense though, as they were supposed to originally be included... Just as an ESCAPE set with the photo of Zira and the toothbrush would be ok... But things like her talking to the director WOULD NOT, unless it ws
included as a behind the scenes card...<.html

I think you could be right
T.
Personally I think if they get the images
and do a test run and they look great (as I suspect they will), they will just
print up a run (maybe only 500 numbered, as I seem to recall is the number of
Linda Harrison cards being done!) and sell them.
If they do, I’ll be buying 100 up
front.
You should all consider REALLY getting
behind this if it happens because it is our dreams come true.
BY the fans, FOR the fans!
If they sell out then maybe we could buy the following sets Greg does too –
if THEY sell out then we can get MORE demanding.
Do you see the common denominator? IF THEY ALL SELL OUT!

expressed an interest in printing these themselves. I want to warn everyone that the discussion we're having is in the very early stages. When there's more information we'll let you all know.
Greg P.
I'm not trying to be Mr. Negative here, but I forwarded the link in Hunter's site to Joe Russo and his reaction was that it was cool what you guys have done BUT the images are simply
freeze-frames from the DVD. He would rather see photos never seen before like those from the Rittenhouse Taylor cards. I have to say I agree. Russo has quite a collection of stills from BENEATH, many
in color.
think Rittenhouse talked about doing this, but this is more exactly what I'd like to see.
Just a thought.

.htmlOnce again we have had a healthy jump in membership numbers this
month, so to all our recently joined new members - welcome to the
group!
Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your
fancy, or start one up yourself!
MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES
TV SHOW COMIC BOOK - GOING HOME!!!
Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and
click on the link underneath the logo....this will take you to the
PDF file of the first 3 pages.
Another new ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES
can be found in the files section of the group or you can just click
on the handy links on the Home Page to view the latest and previous
chapters!
Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is the DG Archives group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and year.
There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in
the group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to
be enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/
Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos and files are occasionally moved to save space on the
main DG group
All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's
Home Page.
And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and
all that great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all
those wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family
experience!

I
would not do a Gideon back story.
This is just a quick nod to Dave Ballard,

Any back story would be Dave’s baby!

What you have to remember though is that what looks fine on a monitor screen
will often look less than fine when you try printing it out on a decent

I'm sure the images would still need to be re-processed if nothing else.

.html In "Tomorrow's Tide" when Burke and Virdon show the poor fishermen
how to fish with a net they aren't really helping them. Instead they
are giving the apes more reason to work them harder, or just as
hard. 'Cause the quota's aren't going to stay the same if they are
bringing in a lot of fish, they're gonna increase! So instead of
having time off from work they are going to have work just as long
and just as hard to bring in more fish. And if a net happens to
break or tangle who is going to fix it? The humans of course. This
means they will have to be responsible for the nets and catching
more fish than ever. And they couldn't possibly become experts with
the net overnight, that would take time. So the apes are going to
expect them to increase the total right away.
Either way they go they lose. Even their superiors, the apes in
charge. The government is going to want to double the quota each
year if they prove that the nets work well.
In a way it's like the poor-black sharecroppers at the end of the
19th century. They had to rent the land, buy the seeds, give away
part of the crop, buy their own equipment and pay it all back, but
each year the prices for cotton decreased and the prices for the
other stuff got higher. They had no oportunity to get out of debt or
prosper.
So these humans and even apes will have no way of gaining higher
status. They will keep up being overworked and underpaid year after
year and the government will want more and more fish each year.
Basically Pete, Alan and Galen aren't helping these poor people at
all, they are driving them further away from freedom. That's not
fair! They should have done something to help them gain independence
and freedom, if not right then, but sometime in the near future.

There was always a strong correlation to the white/black issues in
the way humans and apes were portrayed to me. There were the
absolute hardliners, the sympathizers, the ones who looked the other
way but didn't help...
The series also seemed to leave almost every episode with the
impression that the humans from the current time were somehow
bettered by their brush with the advanced Astronauts. Historically
we know that isn't the case in almost all the cases. Those who
exhibited behaviours they may have picked up from Virdon and Burke or
used some of the new ideas they learned were most likely picked up
and killed. Take for example the situation in Nepal or even the
Underground Railroad. Those who helped the slaves on their way to
freedom were often put to death.
Personally, I think the Astronauts passing thru a village would have
meant a death knell.

escapes me at the moment) wasn't very smart. Couldn't he see that
the more fish they produced the more they would have to give? No
government is ever satisfied with what they get. And if the
government ever found out that they could produce more than the
quotas call for, they would have upped the quotas.
I definitely see how white and black relationships, especially
during the 60's and 70's, correspond with PotA. It would have been
nice to see the trio being turned away by a human villiage who had
heard about them before hand.

That was his favorite novel. One of the characters in one of
the "Lion King" video sequels is named Zira. I've never come across a
Zauis anywhere (or a Veetus). - - - Jeff
*** The "Lord Jim" source sounds possible -- even plausible, if it
indeed WAS Boulle's favorite novel. The name "Cornelius", of course,
predates Kipling by several thousand years, though. As I said,
there's a Cornelius in the New Testament, though he isn't a talking
ape!
By the way, "Zaius" is spelled Z-A-I-U-S, Jeff -- I know you're in
the habit of spellin' it Z-A-U-I-S, but you're transposing two of the
letters. Maybe your fingers get logjammed when you type it; when I
type the word "where" too fast, it usually comes out as "wehre", and
then I have to back-space and erase it & type it in again.
All the same, you don't wanna be dissin' that ape's name; he might
have one of his veterinary surgeons cut pieces outta you... or even
geld you... and we don't want THAT to happen now, do we?
Patrick ;)

my daughter and it got me thinking. It seems that there is a huge
likelihood that the humans would make huge strides quickly because
of their interactions with the human astronauts and a sympathetic
ape.

For each of the five original POTA films, FOX produced and distributed promotional "Heralds" (fictional newspapers) that local theaters distributed to advertise the release of each new film. However, no
Herald was ever produced for to promote the TV series.
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the series: Dave Ballard, Mark Rogers, Kassidy Rae,
Glen Scheetz, and James Aquila brought together their creative talents and produced a four page TV version of Fox's "Heralds", as they imagined it would have been back in the summer of 1974.
It is my pleasure to let you know that you can now download a PDF of this amazing piece of work from either Kassidy's site or Hunter's site:

I have the DVD of LORD JIM, which stars Peter O'Toole and James Mason. Mason was also in JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, produced by 20th Century-Fox in 1959 and featuring the matte paintings of Emil Kosa
Jr., who would do the matte painting of the Statue of Liberty in PLANET.
Six degrees (or less) of separation between POTA and LORD JIM.

What do you girls think of Zira's hairstyle? Would you rather have a "Zira cut" or go wild like Nova? (By the way, ever notice that Linda Harrison had extensions in her hair? I only know
that because my sister, who was a stylist, pointed it out to me.)

The TV series added to the POTA universe as much as the movies did.
The relationship of ape to human wasn't much different in the first
and second film and it certainly carried over whenever the apes were
shown in charge. The movies were a reflection of the time period
they were produced in and the remake carried that same theme forward.
