Before everyone wants to have me lynched let me say that nobody was
more disappointed in the Tim Burton piece of crap more than me. That
being said its really not fair for all of us (myself included) to
keep refering to it as a failure or a movie that tanked. I used to
Manage a video store and Burton's Planet of the Apes broke box office
records for its first weekend in the theaters and we couldn't keep
copies on the shelf for the first few weeks after the DVD/Video
release. Now there is no debating that its not even in the same realm
as Battle for the Planet of the Apes but they made money and that's
all the studio wanted. If they think they can make more money they
will put out another piece of crap and my dumb-ass will be in line
like a dog who didn't learn his lesson the first time.

Yes, I guess it depends what you measure "failure" and "success" by!

It was a success at getting back the money invested plus a profit.

BUT....even Fox know it was a "failure" in that , if done PROPERLY, it would have made ZILLIONS onmerchandise etc.

How dare yooooooouuuuuuu!  You got a lot of nerve!

Seriously though....

POTA2001 financial success is merely a vivid example of how people will eat any entertainment crap that's served up to them, if it's properly hyped and attractively packaged.  The movie was doo doo on a stick, but unfortunately most people didn't discover that until they'd taken a bit.  The film's pretty well on the road to being forgotten, and Fox knows that as far as restarting the APES franchise it was a dead end, a creative flop.  Burton was the wrong person to direct it.

This movie came out a whole generation later. I don't think there
should be too much surprise that it did well. They had
the "oldsters" wanting to see more Apes and the "newbies" getting a
shot at something that worked with us.

Why not?

As much as she loved playing the character, Zira, it was a
struggle and took a lot out of her.  She would feel a loss of
self to the point of tears.  She even had a nightmare that she
had turned into a chimpanzee.  And like they supported Sal,
when he did Milo, without someone like Roddy who had been
through it all from the beginning she wouldn't have made it.

Oh yes it is.  It was successful, in fact now with the advent of
Pay-Per View and Rental Sales and Cable and Satellite TV you
can make money on even the most costly of stinkburgers, but
not as successful as they would have liked.  But you can't tell
me they wouldn't have cranked out four sequels for it had it
been well received.  I think the studio DID want more out of it.
But they couldn't wait for it.  If you're going to make a decent
movie you better be willing to spend the time and money it
takes to make it.  I don't care how good a pizza is, if you
don't wait for it to cool you burnt mouth won't even taste it.

It was one of the biggest movies of the summer, true.
But it had been really good it would have stomped
Jurassic Park III. which it didn't.  Hype will get you past
the first week or so, but it's word of mouth that keeps
the gravy-train running.  All the hype in the world won't.

I don't think she would've done the sequel even if it was possible. She turned down a guest spot on the TV show. But Zanuck offered it to her at the premiere. And I don't know what Zanuck was thinking. I guess he thought this is what movies are these days and it would be a hit and they'd have more say on the sequel. The first weekend was boffo so it looked like it was going to be a hit. It's considered a hit, but people also have to like a movie for a sequel to be a good idea. - - - Jeff

Yeah, producers say a lot of things, most of it shite.
Let's look at the facts.  The film was shite. Kim knew it.
Even if it had been good I doubt you could pay her enough
to get back in make up.  Zanuck knew it was shite.  If he
didn't he's even thicker than I give him credit for.  Hell, he
helped make it shite.  If Burton didn't have the balls to
stand up to the studio suits, then Zanuch should have had
his back.   The film had no legs and tanked, and Kim died
a year later.  It wasn't meant to be, and it's for the best.
After she injured herself in that fall she was in now shape
to do the sequel.  And Fox was in no shape to make a
sequel of a movie that wasn't wildly successful.  And
the movie it's self though it was left open for one, want
up to snuff.  It'll take 'One Hell Of A Sequel' to pull that
turd out of the toilet!  But that's just like my opinion, man!

It's really too bad. There's all these talk shows that would be great to see again, or at least certain episodes. Some one should start a "talk show" network, like the game show network. I bet that would be a success. How about a POTA talk show marathon with "Mike Douglas", "Phil Donahue" and "Tonight Show" appearances? - - - Jeff

It's true POTA2001 was a hit. But Fox knows they blew it, that's why
there's been no rush to do a sequel. Merchandisers got burned, the public
didn't like it and might be reluctant to go to a sequel. It's reputation
proceeds it. But I think they're dumb if they don't try to right the ship.
It's a famous series, it could be their "Spiderman" if they make a good
sequel. Wahlberg is a movie star again thanks to "The Italian Job" (a sequel
is in the works). Financially POTA was not a disaster, Zanuck has shown he's
eager to continue, they need to find a way to keep the budget in line and
find an interesting story. No more ape armies to no end. Do more of a
chamber drama like the original. - - - Jeff

Maybe, I dunno though . . .
Talk shows are pretty topical stuff.
It's be like watching an old news show,
though I'd even watch that, just for the
historical perspective, if not the nostalgia.
Maybe they could do theme weeks.  Show
all the shows about a particular topic, or
from a particular year.  Then we'd be bound
to get a POTA week.  But I would just like
to see it in clips.  I don't want to sit through
a weeks worth of old crap just to see those.

That's why I'd like it to follow the book.
No need for a lot of space age props.
Just plain cars and locations with a
few principals in full makeup and some
#2 & # 3 background masks.  They
can use the ones from the first film.
No need for a big budget FX movie.
Keep it a character driven story.

Hi AmyG! I hope you have fixed your computer and that you are back
on line! Beware the CHAT!!

I sent your comment/question to Sarah at the Chimp Collaboratory.
This is her response:

Chubbs won't be used in a sequel, no. He's no longer "owned" by the
trainer, and besides that, he's too old to be used at this point.
Chimp "acting" careers only last a few years. After they get to be
about 6 years old, they're too strong to be safely controlled by
their trainers, so that's how they end up in roadside zoos. If
there is a sequel and they use chimps, it'd be a new generation of
babies being used. I'd strongly encourage you all to write letters
to the filmmakers as soon as a sequel gets announced (if one does)
to let them know that you're fans and that you hope they won't use
any live chimps.

As far as what you can do for Chubbs, the outlook is grim. The
owner of the place he lives in now is not eager to give him up. You
could try writing letters to the editor of the local paper to raise
some local awareness. The best answer to that question (and we get
it often) is to help try to stop the cycle so that future chimps
don't end up where Chubbs has. That means not going to productions
using apes and writing complaint letters to companies that use
apes. I wish there was a more appealing answer, but it's a really
tough situation!

Hi all - I'm a newbie! Been lurking on this board and
on the pota board for a few days. Just wanted to
chime in re: Chubbs. I find it very sad that things
like this keep happening to animals used in
productions. They have so much money at their
disposal, it seems that they could provide for the
animals better after their "acting" days are over. I
think that Sarah's letter is absolutely right, and I
can't imagine how heartbreaking it would be to be in
her position, where she sees this happening all the
time and is pretty much powerless to do anything about
it. Hopefully, with all the great CG effects these
days, use of live animals will diminish...

Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your fancy, or start one up yourself!

MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES TV SHOW COMIC BOOK - GOING HOME!!!

Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and click on the link underneath the  logo....this will take you to the PDF file of the first 3 pages.

Another new  ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES can be found in the files section of the group or you can just click on the handy links on the Home Page to view the latest and previous chapters!

Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.

First up there is the DG Archives group:
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and year.

There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in th e group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to be enjoyed by all:

Finally there's the Photos group:
Where photos  and files are occasionally moved to save space on the main DG group

All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.

And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and all that great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all those wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family experience!

Has anyone here read "Freak"? I think Mithril wrote it. Anyway, it
was interesting because it had a lot of individual interactions
between a special sort of human, apes, and mutants. I'd like to
know if anyone else has read it and what you all thought. I thought
that for the most part the interactions were true to the stereotypes
of the various apes species, and I'd be interested to know how
others felt about that. The interactions between apes was a little
unexpected. I'm not a big mutant fan, so I can't say if the
interactions between man and mutant was on target or not, but it was
touching.

Anyway, has anyone read this? Care to comment?

Humm, I got the same thing also.
He does has a beard but his clothes are not the dirty type pictured
in the Forbidden Zone Taylor pic. But, I guess I would rather have
them clean and do my own job of making them worn.
What did you think of his face? I am still trying to deceide.
On a different note, I am getting very upset with Sideshow. My First
Taylor, the Astronaut Taylor, they did a bad job on packing him. So
bad his box was damaged. They promised they would send a new box and
stickers to seal him with but that was 3 weeks ago and I still
haven't seen the replacement box.
The Forbidden Zone Taylor's box was damaged as well.
I think I will stop buying direct from Sideshow. My last two orders,
the different Taylors, they showed a lot of disrespect to me the way
they damaged my boxes and never made good on the replacement box. I
have bought 2 of every one but if this is how they treat their
customers, I will take my chances and get what I can on Ebay.

Interesting. Maybe they got confused as what head goes with what
outfit since there are so many Taylors (ha). My boxes from them all
seem fine.

The face looks okay, but it's kind of hard to get a real good look
without taking it out of the box.

You bought two Astronaut Taylors, and they both had beards?

You can't miss him.
He's usually the shortest guy in anything he's in.

Tim Burton is still at it. I read that for "Charlie and the Chocolate

crack open nuts as workers in Willy Wonka's factory, instead of using
CG. - - - Jeff

I watched it a couple nights ago.  Dreadful movie.  Can't believe my father took me to see it when it was new.  I must have seen that Roddy McDowall was in it and asked him to take me.  The movie was released in 1969, but it was already five years dated by that time!

Anyway, it's a time capsule of "how they were then."  Did you catch how McDowall's character was supposed to be a boy genius?  McDowall was nearly 40 at the time!

Yup!

"I'll be the first boy millionaire."

We loved watching Roddy laying on the floor with the pink flower --
bopping his feet to the music.

Marvin was so cute!! Were you watching his reaction to the song
that the Dad (Tony Randall) was singing? What a scream! (He WAS
the shortest, LT!)

It was a great movie for my kids, though. We had a great time
trying to figure out how to fit four people in that tiny submarine!
And then the whole studio came to film them -- complete with Merv
Griffin and makeup crew! How did they all fit in THAT sub? And
Merv was hysterical!!

My Zira and Cornelius boxes were scratched but all the
others have been fine. I ordered another Z&C from ebay
(for much cheaper!) and then opened the original
sideshows because the new boxes were in better
condition. My forbidden zone Taylor is not dirty
either. The boxes are the same for regular and
exclusive figures.

That's horrible! I love Tim Burton movies, but I
never knew that he used animals like this and then

sometimes it really shouldn't be "all about the money"

unions make darn sure that they get taken care of, why
not a union for animals??

American Humane keeps an eye on what happens on the set, but I don't
think they have authority to oversee the training of animals. It's
interesting that American Humane advocates for both children and
animals.

SCI-FI Channel in the U.S., SPACE in Canada. Ratings for the show
are very high and the mini-series in late 2003 that "re-imagined"
Galactica got high enough ratings to allow a regular series. Richard
Hatch, from the original run in the 70's is even guest starring.
So now there's proof that an older sci-fi franchise has the
possibility of doing quite well on cable while sticking to the
original storyline (home planet destroyed by Cylons, survivors
searching for earth).

Why not do the same for POTA? Have an astronaut crash on a planet
ruled by apes and conceive stories with lots of suspense like
Galactica does. Maybe Ron Harper can have a recurring role.

Both movies are on DVD and are excellent for kids.

I read the Freak story...very good. It was filled with suspense, and
the end was beautifuly heartwrenching! The relationships between the
apes was interesting, not a common situation. Very good(awesome)
story. Also, the mutant girl told the boy he was a danger to her
people...aren't the mutants human?

I dunno.  I was watching often awful Bram Stoker's Dracula the

In the 2/6/05 "L.A. Times" it says of Burton's "Willy Wonka": They taught "40 squirrels how to sit upon a little blue bar stool, tap and then open a walnut, and deposit it's meat onto a conveyor belt. In a regimen that would exhaust even Hilary Swank, the squirrels trained every day for 10 weeks before filming commenced. They began their coaching while newborns, fed by bottles to form relationships with human trainers.
"When we first read the script, we had our doubts, as Tim was very specific about what he wanted the squirrels to do", says animal trainer Michael Alexander. As Alexander speaks, several dozen of the film's squirrels jump somersaultsin their cages. "They're not really good at taking verbal commands. And you have to acclimate them to a stage, and lights, and hearing things. They tend to panic". By the time the cameras rolled, however, Alexander's schooling had taken, and the squirrels were ready for their close-ups".
The article also has a couple POTA 2001 refs:
"While usually a favorite of critics, his movies are not reliable blockbusters. His 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes", while all the rage with ticket buyers, was savaged by critics and killed off 20th Century Fox's plans to revive the franchise".
"(Burton) says that while he knew he was in dangerous waters remaking "Planet of the Apes", which he calls a "classic", he feels less concerned tackling "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". "There are those who love ("Willy Wonka"), but it's such a different type of movie. It's not to me a classic. That will upset some people, because they love that original movie, but that's fine. It's available on DVD at your local video store". (Burton's film will be more like the original book than the movie, including the squirrels). - - - Jeff

First, thanks for taking the time to read the story. I had some fun
writing the POTA fanfics that I've posted, but Freak is my favorite,
since I gave it my own spin. The mutants from the city don't consider
them a part of 'old' humanity anymore. They have evolved beyond that.
And since most of the wild humans are getting feral at this point of
POTA history, I chose to make that division clear. The mutants still
have civilization and some technology, so they feel they are superior
to the 'slobbering, militaristic apes' and their going feral human
cousins.

Chimpanzees escape, attack workers near Bakersfield sanctuary

CALIENTE, Calif. There's wild news out of the Kern County today as some chimpanzees have seriously injured two workers after escaping from an animal shelter.

Authorities say the chimpanzees escaped from their cages at a place called Animal Haven Ranch in Caliente, located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield.

A spokeswoman for the Kern County sheriff's department says one of the workers had major injuries and had to be airlifted out of the compound.

At least one of the chimps has been shot and killed and the search continues for others that escaped.

The Kern County sheriff's department and local animal control workers are at the scene trying to track down the missing animals.

Neil, you've got it right as a non-US subscriber.  When I took over the US/Canadian sales, John and I worked out that pre-payment would be the best and most cost-efficient way for me to distribute the fanzine, otherwise I'd have to pay the postage for everyone and then refund it to myself when payments came in. It's just easier for me to account for the money and not have out-of-pocket expenses.  It only covers those folks who get their zines from me rather than from John, who I believe follows the policy you outlined.

Subject: Bradford Dillman on Wonder Woman

Well, being a fan of all thing's 70's my Wife bought me the Season
one set of Wonder Woman. My son was the one who noticed "the nice
Doctor who helped Zira." Sure enough Bradford Dillman plays a Nazi
spy in the first episode, after the 2 hr. pilot. There is also an
episode called "Gargantua" where the Nazi's have trained a gorilla,
that looks close to Ursus in the steam room scene, to try and defeat
Wonder Woman. Much like the Ladies of our very own DG, Wonder Woman
feels that its not the Apes fault it has been taken into captivity
and works to de-program the animal to set it free, rather than fight
and deystroy the animal. Its all a delightful slice of 70's cheese
that an nostalgia freak like myself... or a four year old like my son
can really enjoy. I'm not sure if there are any other "Apes" actors
in future episodes but I'm sure my son will let us know.

Yes, I'm not happy about that! I apologize. I was responding to
Michael's comment. It was frivolous and out of tune. I'd actually
like to withdraw my comment from the board.

Thank you, Rory, because you are right. And to be honest, my first
thought was, "That could be "Milo." It could be.

.html.html Two chimps dead now...

Chimps escape, attack staff at animal sanctuary in Calif.

CALIENTE, Calif. (AP) - Four chimpanzees broke from their cages at an animal sanctuary and attacked workers Thursday, seriously injuring two of them, authorities said. Sanctuary employees shot and killed two of the powerful, sometimes aggressive animals.

One employee of Animal Haven Ranch was airlifted to Kern Medical Center and was in critical condition, said Kern County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Hunt. Another worker was in serious condition, said Hunt, who did not know what kind of injuries they suffered.

Two of the escaped chimps remained on the loose from the ranch, about 20 miles southeast of Bakersfield, the sheriff's department said in a statement. Officials said it was unclear how the animals escaped from their cages.

State Department of Fish and Game spokesman Steve Martarano said wardens with tranquilizer equipment were sent to the sanctuary to capture the chimps. He said it was unclear whether the primates had left the sanctuary grounds.

Animal Haven, about 85 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, cares for animals that have been confiscated or discovered lost. It has held state permits to shelter animals since 1985, Martarano said.

The sanctuary is home to one spider monkey and six chimpanzees, he said. The permits are held by Ralph and Virginia Brauer, who could not be reached immediately for comment.

Chimpanzees can turn surly if not handled properly, said Martine Colette, animal director of another sanctuary, the Wildlife WayStation near Los Angeles.

"Chimps are notoriously strong and they have some very, very specific behaviors," Colette said Thursday. "If someone tries to confine them, they will definitely put up a fight."

Perhaps the best-known chimp at Animal Haven, named Moe, was not involved in the attack, Martarano said. Moe had lived for more than 30 years with a West Covina couple who waged an unsuccessful legal fight to keep him at their home after he bit off part of a guest's finger.

The same thing happened here.  Some kids were
chucking rocks into the gorilla habitat at a male
named Jabari until he'd had enough and found
a way out.  The cops shot him, even though
they had rehearsed for just such an eventuality.
I swear, one gorilla goes on a tear and all those
years of training goes right out the window!
