For Europe ONLY: Payments are generally made in arrears. Our European readers recieve
an issue along with a request for payment - Once that issue is paid for they are then
automatically sent a copy of the next issue as it becomes available (along with a request
for payment), etc.
For America and Canada ONLY: Payments are made in advance to Kassidy Rae.
All other territories: Please contact the editor or myself for more info.
Concerning Europe (which accounts for the vast majority of our readership) the only
reason we work this way is that we are reluctant to accept advance payments for anything
which doesn't yet exist. Scrolls is a fanzine subject to all kinds of delays and obstacles.
That we published issue 2 was mildly surprising, that we are now planning issue 11 is
nothing short of a miracle!

i recently received my copy of the Return DVD (thank you greg p).
and as a long-time collector of bootlegs, i can say with confidence that this is by far the best i have ever seen.
hunter, i am amazed.
for those unfamiliar with the world of pirate videos:
when you pay your $20 (USD) you will usually get a very grainy third of fourth generation copy. it will also come with commercials, and will not always have open or end credits.
and unless it is a copy of a commercially available title, you will likely not be getting any box art.
so, my incredible admiration to everyone involved with this project.

The same thing happened here. Some kids were
chucking rocks into the gorilla habitat at a male

I swear, one gorilla goes on a tear and all those
years of training goes right out the window!
As far as I'm concerned apes in zoos is just like people in prison, and any incidents like these are merely another example of how bad WE are.

Fri Mar 4,10:03 AM ET
U.S. National - AP
By KIM CURTIS, Associated Press Writer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A couple's plans for a birthday
party for their former pet chimpanzee turned tragic
when two other chimps at an animal sanctuary escaped
from their cage and attacked. The man was critically
injured with massive wounds to his face, body and
limbs, and the attacking animals were shot dead.

St. James and LaDonna Davis were at the Animal Haven
Ranch in Caliente to celebrate the birthday of Moe, a
39-year-old chimpanzee who was taken from their
suburban Los Angeles home in 1999 after biting off
part of a woman's finger.
Moe was not involved in Thursday's attack, said Steve
Martarano, a spokesman for the California Department
of Fish and Game.
The couple had brought Moe a cake and were standing
outside his cage when Buddy and Ollie, two of four
chimpanzees in the adjoining cage, attacked St. James
Davis, Martarano said. Officials have not determined
how the chimps got out of their enclosure, he said.
LaDonna Davis, 64, suffered a bite wound to the hand
while trying to help her 62-year-old husband,
Martarano said.
The son-in-law of the sanctuary's owner killed the
attacking animals, Martarano said.
"He saw what was happening and had one kind of weapon
with him and then got another he felt would be more
substantial and shot them," Martarano said. "He pretty
much saved a life."
St. James Davis had severe facial injuries and would
require extensive surgery in an attempt to reattach
his nose, Dr. Maureen Martin of Kern Medical Center
told KGET-TV of Bakersfield. His testicles and a foot
also were severed, Kern County Sheriff's Cmdr. Hal
Chealander told The Bakersfield Californian.
Davis was transported to Loma Linda University Medical
Center, where he was undergoing surgery late Thursday,
Martarano said.
Buddy, a 16-year-old male chimp, initiated the attack
and after he was shot, Ollie, a 13-year-old male,
grabbed the gravely injured man and dragged him down
the road, authorities said.
"Everybody was trying to get the chimp off,"
Chealander said.
Two other chimps, females named Susie and Bones, also
escaped from the cage they shared with Ollie and
Buddy, prompting sheriff's deputies, animal control
workers, and Fish and Game officials to launch a
search.
The wayward pair were recovered by Animal Haven owner
Virginia Brauer after five hours. Martarano said one
chimp was two miles from the sanctuary, located 25
miles southeast of Bakersfield.
The Davises had waged an unsuccessful legal fight to
bring Moe back to their West Covina home and visited
him regularly at the sanctuary where he had been
living since October. They brought the chimp from
Africa decades ago after a poacher killed his mother.
Animal Haven Ranch has held state permits to shelter
animals since 1985 and serves as a sanctuary for
animals that have been confiscated or discovered lost,
Martarano said.
It is allowed to house up to nine primates at one time
and is home to one spider monkey and six chimpanzees,
he said. The permits are held by Virginia and Ralph
Brauer, whom neighbors described as responsible animal
lovers.
"She's devoted her whole life to taking care of these
chimpanzees," said Jeanne Miller, a family friend.

All I can say about this entire incident is that the humans running the place are "lousy human bastards" because something must have been VERY wrong there to make these chimps so hostile. There's
something smelly about the whole thing, and chimps, no matter what they did to anyone are innocent creatures that shouldn't be there in the first place.

Well, not from me anyway…….!).
Thanks to you Neil and thanks to all who have contributed

where the chimp actress that played Milo and Salome in Escape now
lives.
Greg P. mentioned that when he viewed the video Behind the POTA he
could hear the trainer calling the chimp actress "Kelly." With a
name, I went back to some of the people/organizations that I had
contacted earlier and that set the wheels in motion to locate
our "Milo."
There are some missing links in the story, and a bit of a change in
the spelling of the name. I have run into this same problem in the
past when researching Rev war soldiers. It will be important to
have some confirmation, and I am working on that now.
Because it is also important not to alarm the people who may now
have Kelly, I am not going to post names or agencies particular to
her life history at this time. If you would like to help with the
search or suggest ideas, I would love to hear from you. It isn't
important that I find her, but that we find her.

I finally got the Sideshow Lawgiver statue yesterday. I'm really pleased with it, but was a little surprised to find it comes in pieces that have to be put together. The pieces all fit together fine
for displaying without having to glue them together. I guess we're not supposed to glue them together in case you ever want to put it back in its box, but I sure feel like gluing them together. I'm
not going to I guess, but I'd feel better if the thing were one solid piece. Anyone else had the same thoughts?

|
.html Chimpanzee Attack Doesn't Surprise Experts
Sat Mar 5, 9:02 AM ET
Top Stories - AP
By KIM CURTIS and TERENCE CHEA, Associated Press
Writers
HAVILAH, Calif. - Chimpanzees come across to the
public as little darlings, often in diapers and always
willing to hold hands. But they're really aggressors,
primate experts say, more than capable of carrying out
attacks as violent as one that left a man fighting for
his life.
Generally weighing between 120 and 150 pounds with
strength much greater than man, chimps in the wild are
known to kill chimps from neighboring groups, hunt
other primates and even attack humans.
"Male chimps are intensely territorial. They defend
their territory against any perceived threat," said
Craig Stanford, a professor at the University of
Southern California who studies primate behavior.
"Chimps can be violent at times just as humans can
be."
On Friday, authorities continued to investigate how
two chimps at an animal sanctuary escaped from their
cage and mauled St. James Davis, 62. They were shot to
death during Thursday's attack by the son-in-law of
the sanctuary's owners, Virginia and Ralph Brauer.
Animal Haven Ranch, about 30 miles east of
Bakersfield, has held state permits to shelter exotic
animals since 1985. It is allowed to house up to nine
primates at one time and is home to one spider monkey
and six chimpanzees.
"A big part of the investigation will be figuring out
whether the owners were in compliance with
regulations," Sheriff's Cmdr. Hal Chealander said.
State wildlife and county health authorities were
testing the chimps for rabies and other diseases that
could affect the victims' health, Chealander said.
Davis, 62, and his wife, LaDonna Davis, 64, were
visiting the sanctuary to celebrate the birthday of a
39-year-old chimpanzee, Moe, who was taken from their
home in 1999 after biting off part of a woman's
finger.
The couple had brought Moe a cake and were standing
outside his cage when the two young male chimps, Ollie
and Buddy, attacked the man.
Two other chimps, females named Susie and Bones, also
escaped from the cage. They were recovered outside the
sanctuary five hours later.
Susie and Bones could have played a role in the
attack, primate experts said.
"We know that one of the most reliable predictors of
increased male aggression is the presence of sexually
receptive females," said Jeffrey French, a
psychobiologist who studies primate behavior at the
University of Nebraska, Omaha.
The chimps chewed off most of Davis' face, tore off
his foot and attacked his limbs and genitals. Davis
was transported to Loma Linda University Medical
Center, where he had surgery late Thursday night.
The medical center would not release any information
about Davis' condition on Friday. Hospital spokeswoman
Julie Smith said the family requested confidentiality.
LaDonna Davis was bitten on the hand. She was released
from the hospital Friday .
The Brauers would not speak to reporters, but a family
friend gave a statement to The Associated Press, which
read, "All of us here at Animal Haven Ranch are
praying for the recovery of St. James Davis and
LaDonna Davis."
"This is the only incident in 20 years of operation,"
the statement said.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have
called on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web
sites) to ban private ownership of exotic animals in
California, citing the increasing popularity of
keeping such animals as pets. The group said there
have been more than 90 reported dangerous incidents
nationwide involving primates since 1990.

Just out of curiosity – I wonder why

Not that I care, but it is strange that it

Ursus did seem quite unconcerned about 'removing' the protesters in
Beneath and it was only Zaius' intervention that seemed to prevent a
massacre.

They say earlier in the film that if a
king forbids his subjects to wear a crown that doesn't mean he can't wear one.
"Caesar is Caesar". Maybe that was meant to reflect on the end.
Caesar chased him up a tree but Aldo fought
back, so it could be seen as self-defense. I don't recall Caesar pulling a
weapon. - - - Jeff

Some really nice new things up on site. New artwork (an oil painting no less, of Virdon from a talented artist named Graham Smith), some great new photos (a couple of contact sheets, actually, with some
pictures I don't think any of us have seen on the set of the tv series - courtesy of Rob Reading), and the View-Master slides, complete, for your enjoyment. Dial-up users may have a hard time with this
one, but once it is loaded on your machine, the slides are looping, so you can wait for the first one to pop up (they're numbered). Dave Ballard was a big contributor to the VM slides, along
with Greg Plonowski, Alan Maxwell, and John Roche. Hope I haven't forgotten to credit anyone:)
Anybody has the Chad Valley projection slides for the tv series, I'd love to get them scanned and hosted on site (hint hint)

Message
Just wanted to let
everyone know that the group's posts for February 2004 have been deleted from the main
site and can now be found in the files section of the Archives group as a text
file:
For those of you
who are new to the group, we have to do this periodically to free up space as
Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore. As this group is so
active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever
we like to keep a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups to
store excess stuff on.
One very important point - to access the old posts
etc. you will need to be a member of the Archives group. As we have recently had
to 'revamp' the group it will be necessary for all of those who were previously
members of the Archives to also (re)join.
The same is also true for the
Fan Fiction and Photos groups:
All the sites can
be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.
Thanks,
Neil <.html <.html

These are terrific. Thanks to Kass and the
guys. I wondered what was on the Viewmasters. Kind of a disappointment it's the
first ep. Thought it would be an original story like the trading cards. But good
to know.
As for the contact sheets, I asked Bill
Blake about the "mystery people" but he didn't recognize them. But Bill
took the picture of the gorilla (Lee Delano) in front of the farmhouse (the one
where it looks like he's going to wrestle). That's from the scene Bill and Lee
did in "The Interrogation" that was cut. Just the two of them. Bill plays the
chimp whose wagon Virdon and Galen stole, and Lee asks him about it.
A while back, Bill looked at the
"Interrogation" script on Hunter's site, an early one. It didn't have Bill's
scene but Bill did have a script with the scene in it when they shot.
Unfortunately, he no longer has it. It'd be great if someone can turn up the
script with Bill's scene, probably the shooting script.
Anyway, thanks for the continuing great work
everybody. - - - Jeff

update
Some really nice new things up on site. New artwork (an oil
painting no less, of Virdon from a talented artist named Graham Smith),
some great new photos (a couple of contact sheets, actually, with some
pictures I don't think any of us have seen on the set of the tv series -
courtesy of Rob Reading), and the View-Master slides, complete, for your
enjoyment. Dial-up users may have a hard time with this one, but once it
is loaded on your machine, the slides are looping, so you can wait for
the first one to pop up (they're numbered). Dave Ballard was a big
contributor to the VM slides, along with Greg Plonowski, Alan Maxwell,
and John Roche. Hope I haven't forgotten to credit anyone:)
Anybody has the Chad Valley projection slides for the tv series, I'd love
to get them scanned and hosted on site (hint hint)

Hey Rob!!,
I think it's the absolute highest honor that an Actor can recieve, that his work has so inspired these folks to create a model of that character, and offer
it as part of a Limited Edition for the entire collection.
It is very gratifying to know that I was on the right track when I created 'ONGARO'
I didn't think of him as a scary 'dude'. He was just there to protect the last of Human kind!!
I think it was very neat that when I died, everyone cheered!!

*** I'm guessing the former. After all, the entire community of
simians chanted in unison "Ape has killed ape" over & over & over.
They KNOW what Aldo did and did nothing to prevent Caesar's response
to the revelation of murder. They are complicit in Caesar's actions,
which is one good reason why MacDonald can say that the apes in
general have "joined the human race". It wasn't just Caesar who did
Aldo in -- it was ALL the apes. I don't recall hearing even ONE ape
speak up in protest, not even to suggest putting Aldo on trial for
this ALLEGED murder. The apes became, in essence, a lynch mob,
though Caesar himself was the only active member of it.

Dr. Hasslein and Gov. Breck who in their own ways were also trying

people cared enough about his character for it to be created into a

Actually, Sarah Baeckler, our guest a few weeks back, is interviewed
in this article that describes the chimps' reactions to being
introduced to their safe new living environment.
I was interested to see that chimps sent to retirement at government
funded sanctuaries are often sent back to work as lab chimps!!
What's that about? Anyway, these chimps are purchased privately and
will not go back to work. I wish Kelly (Milo) was here, but I'm
guessing it isn't likely since these are Coulston chimps.
