.html Hi all, I just wanted to let you all know that the Profiles in History
auction catalog is online. They have some amazing apes pieces in
there. An original Julius costume on a phenominal display and a
Beneath crucied Gorilla (double cool looking, I didn't know any of
these still existed!). It's worth taking a look at!

.htmlThanks for this info! As a newbie, I didn't realize
you guys had separate groups for the fan fic and
photos. I really enjoyed reading through the fan fic
- I especially enjoyed the "Moderately Simian" story,
recognizing the names of people in the group helps ;-)
We need to get more photos in the photo group though!
Thanks again,
Barb

-- Barb we had to create these satellite groups as we constantly
seem to run out of space on the main group due to the amount of
posts, files, photos etc. that our members contribute to the group.
If we didn't constantly move stuff to the other groups we would have
to delete a lot of great things just to stay under our Yahoo limit!
As well as checking out all the great things on the main group I
would encourage all to check out these other sites, as like I said
over time we have relocated a lot of stuff to them. There are direct
links on the Home Page:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/ , to each of the sites.

Hi all, I just wanted to let you all know that the
Profiles in History
auction catalog is online. They have some amazing
apes pieces in
there. An original Julius costume on a phenominal
display and a
Beneath crucied Gorilla (double cool looking, I
didn't know any of
these still existed!). It's worth taking a look
at!

I always enjoy seeing references to PotA in other mediums and recently
can across 2 more in my recent readings:
The first was in Philip K. Dick's "A scanner darkly". In this future
story set in a narcotic influenced society, one of the characters says
she wants to go to a drive-in to see a marathon of the "Planet of the
Apes" movie series.... all 11 of them! She also goes on to say how she
enjoys how the later movies recount how famous people in our past
history were actually apes, including Lincoln and Nero. (The thought
did cross my mind that the Lincoln reference may actually have been the
inspiration for the cheesy 2001 Burton finale).
FYI: "A scanner darkly" was written in 1977. (It's also currently being
filmed starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder,
but whether the above dialogue gets retained for the screenplay remains
to be seen).
The other reference I found was in book "Godzilla on my mind" (2004,
William Tsutsui). PotA is refered to as one of the first enduring SF
movies series after of course the Godzilla series itself. There are a
few other comparisions made.
Just a few PotA tidbits for a friday......
PS: Happy belated birthday Neil!

Yes, I tried to join there group to find out what the hell is going
on.
Nothing yet. Perhaps they don't have the email traffic that we
do.
Tonight they had The Forge listed, after the basketball game,
but they showed the Nazi one instead. WTF? But last week
it was preempted by America's Top Model. Was it on after that?
Or did they skip that week? I need to get up to speed, since
it's
"The Last Episodes".

It's unlikely I'll subscribe, too few issues for too many dollars, but I hope I can see it at a newstand someplace. If they did do a feature on POTA I'm doubt it would be much more than we've
already gotten from the books, maybe some neat photos.

Revenge of the Apes (Games of the Century 2003) C
4/6/2003
 This
recently-resurrected old Fox prototype is technically impressive, but leaves something to be desired in terms of gameplay. Obviously inspired by Planet of the Apes, you control a man marooned on a planet crawling with
apes. To escape, hell need to navigate his way through numerous forest, river, village, desert, and cave screens to reach safety. The scenery is fairly chunky but the characters look good. In most screens, multiple
apes approach from the left or right, and you shoot them for points. There are three types of apes: harmless chimps, fearsome orangutans, and gorillas that can shoot! I really like how your guy wades through the river
with water up to his chest. Unfortunately, he can also get stuck in the scenery, which is frustrating. The scoring system is worthless,
since you can just stay on one screen and shoot wave and wave of regenerating apes to pad your score. A better challenge is to see how many times you can escape before running out of life. While the gameplay is
admittedly weak, several newly-added features make this game respectable. When captured, youre treated to a full-screen graphic of a man behind bars, and it looks terrific. Theres also a Statue of Liberty
ending which is equally impressive. You'll get a brief glimpse of the original ending, which looks pretty pathetic by comparison. And I cant forget to mention the incredible soundtrack. While the
unconventional music sounds terribly rough and distorted at first, these unique, edgy tunes fit the game well and really grow on you. Overall, Revenge of the Apes is a mediocre game, but the notable enhancements make
this a must-have for collectors. This game can be ordered from Atari Age. 1 player Do You

From an interview with Kim Hunter in "Filmfax" magazine, No. 79, June 2000:
Question: In the third one, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, you had a baby chimp. Was it difficult working with her?
Hunter: No, she was a darling, absolutely adorable, just wonderful to work with. They had someone in my costume, etc., work with the chimp before I met her. They gave me a cover-up thing under my costume,
like cops wear in order to avoid bullets, so if the chimp wanted to bite me on the chest, she couldn't. At one point, the substitute for me, in trying out working with the chimp, did get bitten; not seriously,
fortunately. But I never had a problem with the baby chimp. Once in a while, she could be like any little brat, off-screen. But, on-screen, once the camera was rolling, the chimp was paying attention to the
scene. It was incredible; a natural born actor, truly.
One problem, she was scared to death of elephants. And we had one elephant in the circus scene. When see saw the elephant for the first time, she nearly squeezed my neck putting her arms around me, handing
onto me, just scared to death. After that, the director, Don Taylor, made sure the elephant was not where the chimp could see it when she was on-camera.
We did have another problem when I was on the ship, carrying the baby chimp and looking for Cornelius. There are barriers between areas of a ship. I stepped over that fine, but on the other side, the crew had
left a bunch of lighting wires. I tripped on the wires and fell face down. I held the chimp up because I didn't want her to get hurt. I got bruised, considerably. The chimp didn't get
bruised at all, but got scared. The trainer came over immediately, to take the chimp away. I said, "No, no! I'm the one who has to calm her down. I'm the mom, here." So I
finally did calm her down.
The next time, they got the wires out of the way so I didn't have a problem. Then, we were doing other running around bits in the interior of the ship. And I was ducking under things, trying to get
through. I lost my balance, at one point, but I caught myself and didn't fall this time. The chimp looked up at me as if to say, "Oh boy! What have I got there?" It was the funniest
look I've ever seen in my life.<.html<.html <.html

.htmlThanks for asking, Neil. I actually posted to the other group this
morning but got distracted before I put it on here. As the day went
on, I got more news, so here goes...
Having a name has been a huge piece of this puzzle, so thanks again
to Greg P for zoning in on that piece and bringing it to my
attention!
New information has lead to the following scenario -- much of which
has been confirmed, much of which hasn't.
Kelly was privately owned by someone and "furnished" to the set by
Roy Kabat. There is information in Joe Russo's book "Planet of the
Apes Revisited" that she came from Europe. Kim talks in the book
about her cagemate who died of Hepatitis on the way.
Wally Swett from Primarily Primates was approached at one point by
her owner to take her, but he didn't have room at his sanctuary. He
referred the ower to Genus pan. I found out today that Kelley was
never one of their chimps. HOWEVER....
As it happens, the woman I was referred to about Genus Pan was going
through some old records when my letter arrived!! In those records,
she noticed the name "Kelly".
From her email: "However, strangely enough, I was going through old
files the day your inquiry arrived. There was a "Kelly" at the
Primate Institute in Oklahoma in 1981. At that time she was listed
as approx. 9 years old (the age could easily be off several years as
it was almost impossible to age a chimpanzee based upon the lack of
history that arrived with them)."
"That colony was disbanded in approx. 1982 and most of the
chimpanzees went to LEMSIP. That colony was also later disbanded
(maybe around 1996-7?) and most of the chimpanzees went to
sanctuaries in both the U.S. and Canada."
There is a chimp recorded at The ChimpanZoo database that seems to
support this "history".
The database has information on a female chimpanzee named Kelley
that roughly follows the life course Mr. Swett and Ms. Fritz
described. Kelley, stud # 0248 first shows up in the records in
1968; there is no information on her mother or father. It is
believed that Kelley was sent to the Houston Zoo in 1969 and then
transferred to the Detroit Zoo on February 25, 1972. Kelley then
spent a number of years in research institutions: Lemsep (2/3/76),
Southwest (9/10/79) and finally Bastrop (6/9/81). Kelley would be
about 37 now.
From Jo Fritz email: "I find it a bit difficult to think that the
Detroit Zoo sent a chimpanzee directly to LEMSIP. I was in touch
with the Director at that time, I think? Stefan Graham...and if he
could have sent a chimpanzee directly into research, it would have
been on a loan arrangement. Detroit should have more information on
that."
"I wish I could be of more assistance, but I am relying only upon
memory and the odd old file that I found."
We were thrown by the age discrepancy, as the chimp in the movie
would have to have been about two years older than has been
recorded and now there is a discrepancy in the age to date of the
Kelly/Kelley research chimp. The pictures that we were able to send
to Sarah Baeckler confirm that the chimp in the movie was actually
18 months to 2 years old -- meaning that the chimp didn't arrive
from Europe at 6 months old, as Kim's comments would have suggested.
That would put Kelley's age much closer to the age of the Bastrop
chimp. And, as Jo Fritz mentioned, there is little history that
travels with the chimps.
I have finally made a contact at Bastrop and I should be receiving
more information this week.
The bad news is that many chimps at Bastrop were used for AIDS
research. Although chimps proved to be poor models, those that were
infected with the virus have been kept in isolation since their
exposure years ago. If she was used as for this purpose, she would
never be given an opportunity for retirement, as she couldn't be
socialized with other chimps and would always need to be kept alone.
The good news is this... I have been referred to a doctor in charge
of psycho/social research. That is a really good sign because if
Kelley is being used in this way, it is probable that she has not
been used in AIDS research.
I don't really have any answers and until things can be all tied up
in a nice little bow, there are still a lot of gaps. I do know that
in 2002 a list was compiled of chimps at Bastrop and Kelley's name
was on the list. In 2005 that list was revised (unofficially) and
her name was not deleted.
I'm waiting further information -- hopefully this week -- and hope
to make contact with a couple ape trainers. Wish me luck.
Helen
I did mention this on the other list and, at the risk of annoying
some on the list, I'm thinking that it's good to pray for God's
animals, too, so if you are a praying person, I think it would be
good if you'd pray for Kelley. Thanks.

I actually found a story about in a retro gamer magazine funny enough called Retro Gamer... comes out of England. The story was about the 20th Century Fox game library, this was one they showed as a didn't quite
come out but you can still find it game!
I'll try to find the game ROM and put in the files for everyone to play.

I just know that it has to be in this silly computer somewhere, but
I'm running at 98% capacity, and I've got files stuffed in

(That sentence just passed a Word spelling and grammar check, BTW --
except for durned which is a real word as fer as I kin tell.)
I'm betting it got deleted.

.html Someone asked to have the old Atari game (Michael?). I happened to
have them handy so I created a new folder in the files section
(Atari_POTA_and Emulator) and put both the game and the (Windows)
emulator there.
As previously warned, this is a VERY basic game so don't come in with
any expectations. I got bored after a few minutes playing this a few
months ago.
I don't remember the details of setting it up, but I suggest you
create a separate directory in which to install the emulator and then
just place the small (4Kb!) game file in the same directory.
Have fun.
BTW, I recently got the Gameboy advance (GBA) Planet of the Apes game
for my son and while it is not the best of games (compared to other
GBA games), it's quite cool. You can get the game for $2 or $3 bucks
on Ebay. (The GB player of course will cost a lot more. ;) ) <.html

With the 3rd season of "Land of the Lost"
(where Ron Harper replaced the father in the series) coming out on DVD in a
couple months or so, here's some quotes from Ron about the show. It's from the
book "Fighting Apes in the Kitchen" by Ron Harper. No, it's from the book
"Pufnstuf and Other stuff" by David Martindale (1998):
Ron: "Believe it or not, people still come
up to me and tell me how much they loved that show. I am constantly amazed at
how many people will recognize me from "Land of the Lost" and remember the show.
And they say, 'I was only 5 at the time, but I can remember it very
well'.
"And I think it was primarily because the
stories were so good.I had just finished doing POTA, the nighttime series, which
you would expect to be betterwritten than a children's show on Saturday
mornings. But I thought the stories on LOTL were much more interesting. We
reworked so many old legends, the Flying Dutchman, the Medusa. I remember
our producer, he said that was the most fun that he had, writing stories that
experimented with ancient myths and fables. It
was ambitious.
"I have an eight - year-old daughter and she
has seen them all. It's her favorite show. And I don't think it has anything to
do with my being in them. It's because it's a good show".
Ron: "I was crossing hand over hand on a
rope from some gorge. I remember they had a rope strung up with the blue screen
behind me. And I had a bad back from when I was doing POTA, from a mechanical
bucking horse that they had strapped me into ("The Horse Race"). So I was to do
hand over hand on this rope, but I had a hell of a time doing it, mainly because
my back was so sore. And I remember it was so difficult and finally they put
some boxes under me".
Ron: "You will probably recall seeing the
father in that episode (the first episode of the third season), even though the
actor didn't appear in the third year. I believe they wanted him to come back
and do one episode where he disappeared. But actually it was our producer with a
black wig on. You only saw him from the back. Our producer put on a black wig
and a khaki shirt and he went into the pylon. That was him".

Let's face it. As the care, money and production values dropped
after the first film, it became more of what they originally feared,
laughable. When you're dealing with something incredible it
must be made as credible as possible, or even the best acting
in the world won't help, wether it's 2001 or a Star Trek movie.

planning a "Land of the Lost" movie and they'll use "the lowest of the

My only beef with the GBA game is that it has this silly 'save the
password at the end of a level' thing. I finished the first level the
other day, but did not save the 'password' of course. (Arrrgh!)
Also, the PC version of the game (which is a completely different game
despite the same graphic being used for GBA and PC versions) also lacks
the ability to save at any time. (Arrrrgh!)
Based on the above, I have concluded the game designer have it in for
PotA lovers...

Once again, my hat's off to "Simian Scrolls"
(oh, is that lice? Need to take my hat off more often). "Sim Scro # 10" (I call
them "Sim Scro" because I can) is a mind-bender, page after page of hard work,
team work and leg work. Those who haven't been getting these will live to regret
it.
One thing I like is they do theme issues.
This time the theme is "Escape". There's an article about the "lost" opening
(but I don't buy it; they got us once with the "lost" TV episodes, not THIS
time, "lost" stuff is too easy to fake now), the "Milo" comic book story, John
Fennessy's controversial take on "Escape" (Cornelius and Zira as the villains of
POTA) and even an interview with "Escape" novelist Jerry Pournelle.
There's even some apparent accidental
connections. The article on Bill Blake brings back memories of Marvel # 12,
which was also "Escape"/Bill Blake themed. And in the Pournelle interview he
says he dedicated the novelization to the writers of the proto-POTA novel "Genus
Homo" (1950), which also gets an article in this issue.
Then there's the centerpiece, a history of
the Argentine comics and their restoration by talented fans we know well. Also
includes interviews with the creators of these rare '70's comics courtesy of the
bilingual author, Rich Handley. Handley handily writes an involving narrative of
this almost lost POTA history.
The layout of the magazine is supurb, the
pictures and illustrations are fantastic and the quality of the paper stock
makes it a "coffee table magazine" (as long as you don't drink coffee, you
wouldn't want to spill anything on it). Ha! I said "lay".
Truly, "Simian Scrolls" are just as vital as
"POTA Revisited", "Behind the POTA" and the other recent gold we never would
have imagined. Thanks to John Roche, Dave Ballard, Alan Maxwell Dave West and
their collaborators for a new legacy that will last. - - -

last night i watched a documentary about one of the greatest american horror movies from the 70s: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
...and barely three minutes into the documentary and one of the actors begins talking about roddy and pota!
here's what happened, according to the young actor who played "grandpa" in TCM:
in 1973 he was working at a stage play when he got the part of grandpa. he gave his boss a two week notice. she asked what role he had secured. he explained that it was a very old man and that he would be covered in
makeup.
she allegedly scolded him with these words of wisdom: "roddy never would have taken the part in planet of the apes if he was not already an established actor!"
and that was the only pota reference.
documentary was intersting, but would likely be very dull for the non-TCM fans.
rob/ron go vegetarian!

disuse have killed those "gaming neurons" :) I guess,
too, that as adults, we have convinced ourselves that
