Well, if
anyone wants to see these - they are done.
You will have
to do some begging though - SERIOUSLY.
And you won't
be seeing any more WITHIN unless we get some interest.
Over to
you.

Well I finally finished inking these 4 pages, now I have to scan them and
put the text on etc., which can also be quite a long job.
Whether they
will be seen on this group though is another matter and something we are
currently discussing. Due to the Yahoo memory limitations as well as other
reasons Michael and I are trying to figure out the best way to make the
pages available to you, our loyal readers, and as soon as we do we will
let you all know.

*** Al Hirt released an album of TV theme songs back in the late 60s,
called "The Horn Meets the Hornet" -- it has the same kick-ass
version of the "GREEN HORNET" theme that Tarantino used in "KILL
BILL" #1, as well as the "BATMAN" theme, "GET SMART", "TARZAN" (the
Ron Ely TV show), and a slew of others, including the "KING KONG"
theme. I never did get to see that cartoon back then (I was born in
1965, and it didn't get rerun -- at least, not where I lived), but Al
Hirt's magnificent trumpeting version of it is just a tape player
away. My brother dubbed a copy from an old vinyl record in the local
public library. We've both tried to email the record company that put
it out, but they're in no hurry to release it on CD, the swine!
That Kong cartoon sounds a little bit like the Godzilla cartoon that
they put out in the late 1970s (I think it was), where he was friends
with a group of youths, or something. As I recall, there was a little
Godzilla "side-kick" that snorted out smoke rings from his nostrils,
who was part of the gang. Kooky. Around the same time that cartoon
was airing, there was a Scooby Doo knock-off called "CLUE CLUB" which
had a group of young sleuths accompanied NOT by a Great Dane, but by
a Bloodhound and a Basset Hound, named "Woofer" and "Whimper",
respectively. We had a basset named "Maggie" back then, so it was
always fun to watch that show -- and trying to get the dog to watch
it, too. She was always more interested in snoozing on Saturday
mornings, though... Those were the days.

Hi
John.
I don't think
we'll stop DOING the comics - I am really enjoting writing and Neil is enjoying
his art; and WE are enjoying the team experience.
However, it
seems only 3 people here actually want to see the next pages of "Going
Home".
That does not
bother me - this comic is being done firstly because we want to and secondly to
be published.
But I'll be
screwed if I want to share it with the group (around 250 people) if most don't
even have the common courtesy to express a wish to see it. If more of you
tell us you want to see it we may upload it. I am actually risking pissing
off Fox by doing so - why would I take that risk?
The strips -
well, the idea of these was to generate discussion. They aren't really
doing that, so again - unless something changes they shall continue to be
written and drawn but it it unlikely we will share them.
And we'll
just bring up the same formulaic things to argue about if we ever want
discussion - why do all this unnecessary work?
I am
currently extremely disillusioned with the group and with POTA fandom in
general. It seems that what people really want is an endless tap of
freebies and won't even type a few words in appreciation.
So Neil and I
are looking for another venue - one that benefits US instead of one that takes
us for granted.
That's how it
is - and you can thank yourselves (there are exceptions and you know who you
are).
Michael

Just to let you (and especially the nice Mr Whitty) know that I
haven't forgotten you -- here's a post to say: "HELLO!"
Particularly because today was a fun day for me. I recently bought a
16mm film projector and my ambition was to buy a scope (i.e.
widescreen) film print of the original POTA. And it happened.
For the best part of £200.00 I now have my own print of PLANET OF
THE APES. To run on a projector -- on film.
It's a million times better than DVDs - (the widescreen picture on
my wall is HUGE!!!!)I just wish I could invite every last one of you
to come round to my flat for beers and a screening!!!

.html Well, I hate to hear it but everything you say is true. Its a lot
harder to deal with Planet of the Apes than Star Wars, Star Trek etc.
Most of the POTA groups have very little activity. It is few and far
between that there is something really exciting in the POTA universe
at this point. Most of the greatest POTA happenings have been fan
made lately. The comics, the new card series, the Return cartoon
DVDs, FanFic, the TV Herald, etc. all came from fans having to create
what wasn't there and I am so thankful to all the talented people who
have shared with me over the last few years. I have been really
impressed with all the comics you two have been involved with and
wish you were able to get more out of all the work you have put in. I
have seen some of Neil's non-ape horror art and it is just as
impressive. I just wish the POTA franchise was at a point where you
guys could do more with it. I am not a fan of chat rooms and until a
few years ago I didn't enjoy the DG's because they had the same feel
to me. Since then I have met some really great and talented fans and
have truly enjoyed the PotaDG because it was different than the same
finger pointing, overanalyzing Star Trek (sorry Rory) like debates
that most deal with. I hope you guys can make this all work out. Its
too costly to fly down from New Orleans so my Wife says killing you
both is out of the question.... for now. hehehe

Yes, a set of Escape cards created to mimic the original Topps Planet cards is now available for viewing on Hunter's site:
As with the Beneath set I have to credit Neil Foster with the incredible art he created for the card backs and the wrapper. He did a fantastic job matching the original style, which really helps the illusion.
I'd also like to thank Kassidy Rae for her editorial assistance on the card back copy.
Also pitching in this go-round is Dave Ballard, who helped with some of the captions.
I'm putting together the hi-res files now, they'll be available on Hunter's site either later tonight or early tomorrow.

Yes Helen I'm still here. Actually while I've been receiving a steady
stream of DG emails and digests, for some reason, Yahoo is blocking my
'reply' attempts. (I you are reading this it's either working again or
I've opted to post via the site interface).
Michael/Neil: Of course we all enjoy the comics and do hope you decide
to continue. Someone already pointed out that Neil's apes are actually
getting more realistic lately and that's quite a feat since they were
top notch to begin with. (Whatever happened to that change in drawing
style? I remember worrying that he'd loose the 'realistic' look. No
worries now.)
Greg/Neil/Kass/Dave/Hunter: Awesome Escape cards!
Scrolls Review:
Once again the Scrolls guys did a superb job! I was especially looking
forward to the Ploog interview which was great but also provided my one
bit of cirticism. The comic panels that adorn the article ar not
labeled and they also feature the frankenstein monster for another
Marvel comic from the mid 70's. Now it is completely ironic that
although I've always associated Ploog with the Marvel POTA mag ever
since I bought that first issue right of the shelves, I never knew he
was also the artist of first issues of the Frankenstein line, and I
also had some them at the time. But since the images were not
labeled/titled I had to look it up to confirm (no biggie these days,
just a google away).
Nobody draws a hooded ape like Ploog. Neil, please consider hooded apes
sometine in the future! I'll even let you draw 'jarred brains' if
that's what it takes! ;)
I know it may not have been as interesting to the majority of the other
POTA fans, but the reviews and synopsis' of the two vintage 'Ape'
themed SF novels were much appreciated. As a longtime SF reader who
seeks out interesting old material, these are definite 'must reads' for
me. The novels were briefly mentioned long ago by someone, but these in
depth reviews really convinced me that I have to search them out.
Also like to thank Canadian/US distribution postmistress: Kass. (Hang
in there with your Dad Kass, I know EXACTLY what you're going through).

It's true, as fans we have to rely on ourselves to generate anything pota. It still bothers me that we can't legally publish fan produced comics or novels. I am thankful to all the individuals for the various
creative projects on this groups and other groups. Hope things can keep going. Elaine<.html <.html

I don't think it's who is highest paid.
It's who has the stature to play historic roles convincingly.
Tom Cruise, Jim Carry & Mike Myers make bucks, but
you wouldn't tap them to play Moses. Mel Gibson makes
a great William Wallace, but he's no Moses. Russell Crow
I could see as Ben Hur, maybe. But Moses? No. Sean
Connery might pull it off, but he's too Scottish. Same with
Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen. Too British. Old Clint
is too old. Maybe ten years ago, but now? They're all a
tad
too old, a tad too Brit, or a tad too short, or whatever. No,
that leave just one guy. He's got an accent, but I've heard him
loose it before. Who? You may well ask. And some
will
disagree. But my vote goes to Liam Neeson. Now I could
see Ian McKellen as Zaius, though I would have preferred
Ralph Richardson or John Gielgud. Too bad their both dead.
I could see Helena Bonham-Carter as Zira, but I would
prefer Felicity Kendal. She has the voice and the eyes.
Any good casting ideas for Cornelius?

I'd say Nicolas Cage. He is about the age that Chuck was when he
did Planet. He isn't Moses... but he was an angel. A bit less
chiseled and threatening then Heston, he has the presence that
Heston does. Cage ranked #40 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100
Movie Stars of All Time" list. [October 1997] Heston ranked #28 on
that list.
And he is such a hunk!

Termintator)? He'd certainly be more affordable for the role than
Nicolas Cage and most of his work is action-oriented.

.htmlWho among today's actors would be comparable enough to Heston to play
Moses? Well, my vote would go to Morgan Freeman. He's got the stage
presence and the talent to do it. Of course, having a black man play
Moses is no more historically inaccurate than having WASPY Heston play
someone who was supposed to be able to pass for Egyptian. And he does
have experience playing God.... As for him playing an astronaut in
POTA, he also is a little too old.
For POTA, I like Cage, even Beihn, but what about Bruce Willis, he's
plenty prolific right now? or Vin Diesel--talk about hunk-appeal--and
he's got this totally unflappable thing down pat. Or how about Johnny
Depp? Viggo Mortensen?
But, there could be worse choices than Marky Mark... How about Keanu
Reeves???

with Ape talk. Not sure if all these topics were on DG
or the other Pota group but anyway.....
Michael and Neil....I can't begin to beg enough for
you two to continue with the comic projects. I feel I
have to beg for 250 people...what can I do short of
flying down under and begging in person? I don't
understand why people don't mention their gratitude
but know that I am one of your fans and would sorely
miss the strips. Maybe save them all up and make a
comic book and charge money for them....I'd buy it.
Kass....I hope your dad is doing better.!
I LOVE the Escape cards! I'll have to print them out
sometime soon on good paper! THANK YOU!
I have no opinion on the new yahoo look because I

Ewan McGregor would make a fine new "Taylor"or
Cornelius. And I have to disagree with Nicholas
Cage....he just creeps me out......BUT how about Chris
Walken as Zaius?????
That's all for now!

Just wanted to let
everyone know that I have had to move some files from the main site and they can
now be found in the files section of the Photos
group:
This had to be
done to free up space as we had just about reached our permissible limit as
Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore. As this group is so
active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing these files forever
we like to keep a copy of them, so we had to start a few more groups to store
excess stuff on.
The files moved
are:
German comic reprint pages

Monument roughs (folder)
rebelape1.jpg (
Rebel

rebelape2.jpg (Rebel Ape version 2,

One important
point - to access these files. you will need to be a member of the Photos

The same is also
true for the Fan Fiction and Archives groups:
All the sites can

It wasn’t intentional – but the
imagery of a “Long and Winding (Yellow Brick?) Road” and the
distance between Galen and the 2 astros in “Going

Thanks for the two new strips, Neil. I was thinking the other day with regards to the comments that your art style on this story has become more detailed that it really reflects how the tone of the story has changed
since the beginning. At the start of the story the art was more loose and open, and the story had a sort of whimsical tone with the cell phones and the Monkees album. But now characters are dying and there is betrayal
and secrets and the art style is tighter and more detailed.
While I sort of miss the more humerous elements of the early part of the story, I really can't wait to see what happens next. I particularly can't wait for Dr. Garvon's assistant's identity to
finally be revealed. I think I know who he is now, but my previous guesses have been proven wrong, so I think I'm just going to keep it to myself for now. The way you guys have been teasing it out it may be
another 4 strips before we finally find out.

Good call – he would have to be
portrayed more of a controlling, “Mafioso” bad guy than a well
intended puppet master to make it work with CW though, I think.
Respectfully to Helen, I agree re Cage –
I did like him very much in “Matchstick Men” but that’s all.
I think having a black man or a strong
female lead (or both) would be a brilliant reflection upon how times have
changed and would be a glorious personification of many of the important POTA
themes of prejudice and slavery.
And really – what about Brad
Pitt? He CAN act (12 Monkeys, True
Romance (!), Se7en, Fight Club) and he’s 42!

If you have seen Romper Stomper – the Aussie movie that put him on the map

better than Heston did.
And
Zira?

I have nothing against Harrison Ford and even now he wants to
do another Indiana Jones, so he can still do the action. But there's certain age
requirements for astronauts and that might have been a credibility problem for
the story. Unless they did a totally different story without astronauts. Or have
astronauts landing but the astronaut isn't the star. That might have been more
interesting instead of doing the same old story like they did. - - - Jeff

Jeff, I think it is imperative that they
re-do the story entirely but capture the spirit of POTA.
I am having trouble defining the spirit of
POTA, but it is certainly more about themes and irony that it is or ever was
about the script – would you agree?

.htmlThat's one thing the studios need to reconsider. This idea if they're
doing a big movie they need a star to make their money back. The big stars
now get $ 25 million a movie + profits. Tom Cruise is getting a share of the
theatrical, video and toys for "War of the Worlds" (I've heard it's going to
be a trilogy; they estimate Cruise is worth $ 300 million and the WOTW films
will double that). Add Spielberg's gluttony and the studio will get the
crumbs.
Does an event picture like POTA need a star? Marky Mark got $ 10 million
for it (and admitted he cashed a profit check for it) but the "star" was
POTA. That's why it had the huge opening. - - - Jeff

Cougar – you seen 12 Monkeys? It really reminded me of POTA for many

directing POTA and Willis right next to him if that happens.
