Yes, all you have to do is look at the
original films. There's all different kinds of things that happen but for the
most part fans embrace them all. I think the most important part is the science
fiction aspect and keeping viewers off balance. Basically "Escape" is the first
film in reverse but it kept people surprised. From the first moments when the
apes take off their helmets to tricking us into thinking it's light-hearted (not
really tricking, just doing something different for a while) to it's surprise
demise of the characters. Maybe some fans think it's TOO different in tone but
it had a good script and is generally considered the best sequel (and Jacobs'
fave sequel). Each movie is different in tone , even the original and "Beneath"
which on the surface seems like a clone. The problem with Burton's was it was
more of a tribute than a movie. We'll see what he's learned for "Willy Wonka".
If that movie is bad I think his career will be in trouble. - - -

Jeff, I think it is
imperative that they re-do the story entirely but capture the spirit of
POTA.
I am having trouble
defining the spirit of POTA, but it is certainly more about themes and irony
that it is or ever was about the script would you
agree?

I have nothing against
Harrison Ford and even now he wants to do another Indiana Jones, so he can
still do the action. But there's certain age requirements for astronauts and
that might have been a credibility problem for the story. Unless they did a
totally different story without astronauts. Or have astronauts landing but the
astronaut isn't the star. That might have been more interesting instead of
doing the same old story like they did. - - - Jeff

.htmlI don't think the other actors got paid all that much. I remember when
POTA2001 came out Helena B. Carter said she'd only do a sequel if she got a
raise. And I think she gave the best performance. Of all the actors I think
Paul Giamatti is having the best career. He's become an unlikely movie star
with "American Splendor" and "Sideways" (people thought he should've got
Oscar nominations for both). He's featured in the new Russell Crowe boxing
movie ("Cinderella Man"?) and just got cast in M. Night Shamalain's new
movie (a kind of spooky "Splash" with Giamatti in the Tom Hanks role).
Wahlberg had a hit with "The Italian Job" but most of his movies have
flopped. Those huge movie star salaries not only hurt the others in a cast,
they hurt the ordinary hard working peons behind-the- scenes, and make
movies more costly and more of a risk, so they play it safe. - - - Jeff

Harrison Ford got the lucky break of "Indiana Jones" right after
"Star Wars", so he didn't get typecast. He became a true movie star. What's nice
is that he did it at an older age. I think he was in his 30's when he did "Star
Wars" and now he's in his 60's and wearing an ear ring. - - - Jeff

I agree that HBC gave the best performance, I remember coming away

things I liked about it. I would have thought she would have been at

.html They already tried the "lets change the story completely and try and
keep the feel of POTA" and with a director I thought would have been a
perfect choice... and it was a disaster. I think the radical change in
the human characters (a woman or black male) could be a great avenue
to explore but the basic story needs to stay. Having the current man
be more animal and not speaking for one. The hunt in the Burton film
is nowhere near as dramatic or disturbing as the hunt filmed over 30
years earlier. The image of the piles of bodies or humans on poles
scarred me for life (in a good way). I also think Zira looks better
than Ari did. The other make-ups did look good but not enough to carry
the whole picture. The characters in the original series where all
terrific and you cared about them. I think Thade was the only
character in the new film that was in any way truly interesting. I
think Terry Gilliam is just bizzare and talented enough to pull off a
radical change in the series but keep it a story and character driven
film. I also think keeping the main character as someone who is dark
and disillusioned with the entire human race is a quality that
shouldn't be changed... but then again what do I know.... I'm just a
fan. <.html

In fact, there was a time, before I knew better

the reasons he was cast in Monkey's Uncle
is his Apish looks. And I saw him on a
Master's Hot Rod build on Jessie James
Monster Garage. He can still chop with the
best. But he chopped his leg, and finished
the build on crutches. He's a funny guy too,
His nickname is Norm "Woo Woo" Grabowski.
But it wasn't his comedy or his football player
physique that got him his break in show biz.
He built the hot rod Kookie drove in 77 Sunset Strip!
His custom cars are prized among collectors.

.htmlTim Burton is a good director for certain things. As a "tribute"
director. "Edward Scissorhands" was a tribute to Frankenstein. "Ed Wood" was
a tribute to love of film. "Big Fish" did show promise as a storyteller in
his own right, though. But POTA needs a storyteller. Burton loves the Hammer
horror movies but when he did "Sleepy Hollow", it wasn't scary. It just
presented the basic elements of those movies and gave them a 'quirky' spin.
And of course his patented visuals. There's too much baggage that comes with
a Burton film.
I've seen Terry Gilliam's new movie "The Brothers Grimm" and it's an
expensive mess. It was supposed to come out last year but it's being
retooled. Hopefully they'll save it or he'll need a sign that says, "Will
direct for food". Again, Gilliam is good for things but I don't see him as
POTA's savior. It needs the new James Cameron or Sam Raimi, some one not so
"quirky". - - - Jeff
