On one of the talkies in the summer of 2001, they said all the POTA2001 stars had signed on for a sequel.
Too bad things didn't work out.

I don't think the other actors got paid all that much. I remember when
POTA2001 came out Helena B. Carter said she'd only do a sequel if she got a
raise. And I think she gave the best performance. Of all the actors I think
Paul Giamatti is having the best career. He's become an unlikely movie star
with "American Splendor" and "Sideways" (people thought he should've got
Oscar nominations for both). He's featured in the new Russell Crowe boxing
movie ("Cinderella Man"?) and just got cast in M. Night Shamalain's new
movie (a kind of spooky "Splash" with Giamatti in the Tom Hanks role).
Wahlberg had a hit with "The Italian Job" but most of his movies have
flopped. Those huge movie star salaries not only hurt the others in a cast,
they hurt the ordinary hard working peons behind-the- scenes, and make
movies more costly and more of a risk, so they play it safe. - - - Jeff

We had over 40 people there. 18 kids. They learned about how they
hatch the babies in the incubators every August (so we didn't get to
see that) and the guy (who was very Steve Irwin) got in and wrestled a
3 ft. gator that Seth helped taped his mouth shut and took pictures
holding it. They also fed the babies marshmellows. I guess cause they
float and the kids could see them. They released over 5000 gators back
into the wild since they opened in 1989. It was the same place Jessica
Simpson went on her stupid show.

Just to be clear, an online image of it. Something I can use in a

Hey Chris....try this:

http://www.goatley.com/pota/prophecy/index2.htm

it's a site within a site of Hunter's that has great
screen caps from the films. There is a great pic of
the alpha Omega bottom part of the bomb...the full pic
isn't as clear...I'll see what else I can find.....

Wow, Neil. You're really smoking on these. We got two new ones last week and now we get four new Within strips.

As usual, the fourth strip has one heck of a revelation. And here you were hoping not to have to draw that object again after Beware the Beast. Just don't let Mike make you draw any interiors. You hold firm on that.

Seriously, this is a very cool twist in the story, and it's nice to see we have a few more characters from Beneath joining the story (and it's only striking me now that Within is sort of a synonym for Beneath, making this story more a prequel for Beneath rather than a sequel of Planet). And I'm now rather confident that Dr, Garvon's assistant is actually none other than a character from Escape.

Wow, what did we do to deserve all this comic all at once? And how do
we make sure to keep you two putting them out this fast? Seriously,
some great surprises and I can't wait to see what Milo is going to do
now. The story keeps getting better (even if you didn't build up to a
Ape war with the humans) and the art is great as always. It may not be
the mindless action I was looking for... but this could be better and
even more shocking. Thanks for all the work. You now move even further
down my list of people to kill for this week. hehehe

Well John, it's not about what you did to deserve it - it is more
about what others have done to destroy it.

Last time I spoke to Neil he had decided this group takes us for
granted WAY too much and he agreed to upload what he had finished,
    and that's it.

    So I guess this is....IT!

I gather a concentrated effort MIGHT see the strip continue, but gee
it is a LOT of hard work for little return.

We'd both prefer to focus on the comic books that we know are being
published, rather than throw a treat to a bunch of people who can't
    even "pay" by commenting!

Well, now I guess I can say I was involved in a POTA project that was
    never completed.....how ironic.

Thanks to those who DID bother to comment.

All jokes aside I am really sad to hear this. But like I said before I truly do understand. I am going to miss that little something extra the DG had to offer compared to the other lame groups. I hope you and Neil will keep me informed on whatever projects you do decide to work on.  I wish I could get more people as excited about your work as I am, instead of wasting there time arguing about weather or not slavery can apply to animals and other such nonsense. I guess its back to POTA internet limbo for me. It was a great but all to short run. If you decide to finish the Within story and make copies like you did for Beware the Beast i sure am interested. I hope you guys will still be actively running the DG even without the comics. It will never be the same but I have met some cool people and hope it will continue. Maybe they will wake up once its pulled and realize what they are going to lose.

Indeed I do.  I would have to build a projection booth though.
I'd start looking for other prints to run.  As well as getting
a DLP projector to show the DVDs of the stuff I can't get.
Ahhh . . . To have a real home theater.  However it would
have to have cool seats, light box posters and hot dog
and popcorn machines, with the butter dispenser, of course.
Not to mention the electric curtains and auto dimmer.

    Decided to go public...

I'm sorry I haven't contributed much (well, anything, actually). My
family has been really busy lately, so there hasn't been a lot of
time or opportunity to hang out.

The comic is amazing! Don't stop now! You guys rock as a comic
team! I agree with you, though, that you should start making some
money! It's definitely with a warm heart that you've shared,
because this is good stuff. Many thanks from me to you for all that
you have shared, whether this is the end or not. We've enjoyed
everything you've put out, and we are pretty lame to expect you to
do it forever. I wish you the best in whatever direction you go.

Please don't be discouraged with group participation. It might help
if you knew how terribly dark and dreary it has been here this
winter. A very short time ago the sun started shining for the first
time in MONTHS, and I'm thinking people across this country are just
so glad to see sunshine that they've abandoned their computer
activities to grab some of it. I know I can't say how very glad I
am to see the sunny skies again. I know you guys are headed into
winter **gasp**, so that may be hard to imagine. We've had
blizzards where there is normally no snow and constant (mudslide
causing) rain in California where it is usually lovely all year
long. Even Florida has had freezes this year and the snow in the
southern and midwestern areas has been worse than it was here. And
hardly a hint of sunshine all winter.

Please be patient with these sweet people. There are several of us
    with cabin fever!

So, I'll be another four or five weeks or so before I get back into
the groove... I hope you'll be back at it again soon. Not for the
group only -- although some of us are seriously addicted -- but for
your own pure enjoyment, as well.

Anyway, just wanted to check in with you guys. When I saw this I
felt HORRIBLE, thinking that you might feel abandoned by the
masses. I checked out the comics and felt a sense of sadness that
it could well be over, but I also felt a huge sense of pride that we
have had a chance to share your efforts! I think it is amazing that
you let us in on that! I'm a serious addict, so I have one
question... Where can we find the first chapters of the comic?

    Helen

Marvel UK issue 25 is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week we have another chapter of the infamous Apeslayer! story. No major article or interview this week, but there is a letter column, a Fan Page feature on two women who wrote to Ron Harper and James Naughton asking if they could start U.K. fan clubs for the actors and got personal replies back, and a full-page photo of Galen.

I have written two poems based on the comix, so Michael and Neil I think you are the only comic creators that have generated poetry. You should feel unique. Elaine

No, Neil. You guys didn't fail. The Planet of the Apes fans failed.
Apparently most would rather argue over obscure facts and personal
opinions on age old concepts rather than to have real conversations
about new and exciting storylines created just for us. And I agree.
That is SAD. I poke fun at the stereotypes of a Star Trekkie but I
guess most Apes fans fit that over analyzing, "get a life" position
than I would have ever liked to admit to. On the behalf of those of us
who did get what you two where trying to do I'd like to say I'm sorry.
Don't let it stop you from creating the best Planet of the Apes comics
we've been given access to. I hope the both of you find a new and
satisfying venue for your art and as a fan I will follow.

I was reading through my old Planet of the Apes comics and noticed
something I never caught before. The Lp version of the Power Records
TV stories has almost the same artwork for the story "Mountain of the
Delphi" as the bottom of page 18 of issue #2 of the Curtis comic book.
Artwork by Mike Ploog for the "Terror on the Planet of the Apes"
story. They removed the hoods from the apes and added the backround of
the liberty bell and Delphi city instead of the tree house setting.
Has anyone else caught this? Did they do this for the other records
    artwork also?

If you've downloaded the comics from Hunter's site the artwork I'm
talking about is located in issue Potauk014_part3 at the bottom of the
2nd page. Just like when Neil did all the Hunter clothing variations
but you could tell it was the same basic drawing, this is the back
cover for the Power Record Lp with minor changes.

Before I had a computer, any "extra" ape goodies I found were in Terry's
publication, APE CHRONICLES and the APESFAN issues. I thought these were
great (and of course, later, SIMIAN SCROLLS).
Do you think fans would be more free with their praise if the strips were in
a fanzine that came out regularly, or is there not enough demand for a, say,
    quarterly published POTA fanzine?

    Just a thought...

I loved the issues of Apesfan I was able to find. It was the first
fanzine that seemed to have real quality articles and amazing photo

costly to produce a fanzine of that quality or just like most GOOD
Apes projects the interest is to hard to keep.

Now to me this is a surprise as I had never heard of Ploog inking someone else's work before, only his own. I have carefully studied the strip in question and though I may be wrong, to me it just does not look like Ploog's ink work / style.

view the stories without always digging out my books and being

I think the problem is simply that people take it for granted.

And nobody seems to want to contribute as much as they should.

I loved the issues of Apesfan I was able to find. It was the first
fanzine that seemed to have real quality articles and amazing photo
content. I wish they could have continued that. I guess it was too
costly to produce a fanzine of that quality or just like most GOOD
Apes projects the interest is to hard to keep.

    Hi Dan.

I don't know - but I think there are enough paper fanzines.

What Neil and I have done is essentially the same thing, but we have chosen to give it away on the net rather than sell it.  We've even made them all printable!

    That's OK - we're learning!

Do you think fans would be more free with their praise if the strips were in

    quarterly published POTA fanzine?

Now to me this is a surprise as I had never heard of Ploog inking someone else's work before, only his own. I have carefully studied the strip in question and though I may be wrong, to me it just does not look like Ploog's ink work / style.

Hunter is strongly affiliated with James and therefore he does not allow facts about James to influence him, so he leaves the DG every time James pulls his stunts and I react.

That's another thing that bithers me - we direct everyone to Hunter's site even though he is a prick to us, but he won't have a link to the DG on his site.  He hosts all the great stuff we provide him with, but nothing is reciprocated.

I just wanted to send out another thanks to Hunter for hosting the UK
comics (as well as all the other great content) for us to download. It
has been a great way to fill the gaps in my comic collection and to
view the stories without always digging out my books and being
paranoid about messing them up. I am also constantly printing coloring
pages and activities for my five yr. old son. That has been the
biggest gift. Being able to share my Apes obsession with him without
ruining my 70's memorabilia. I am truly grateful to all whom have
    contributed to Hunter's archives.

To me what we need is solidarity - for all the bitchiness and
bickering to stop and for people to get along regardless.

THAT is what POTA is saying to me - get along, get on, or all be
    destroyed.

What we get instead is disgraceful acts and lying from people who are
    then rewarded for this.

To form one genuinely effective community, we should all simply be
avenues for each other and promote each other as much as possible.
We need to get together and agree on an identity and a place on a map
    and work on that.

But to a lot of people it is more about power and control.

It is about being "the best" instead of about doing YOUR best.

And the only thing that captures regarding the spirit of POTA is
    irony.

And that should not be permitted.

What about POTA cards? Everyone loves POTA cards. Remember the
Spiderman cards by McFarlane in the early 90's where the entire set
told a story (I believe it was with Wolverine). Marvel did other
adventure cards like this (Ghost Rider, The Hulk) around that time.
What about dressing up a strip as cards, sized for print as you've
    done with the strips?

    Just another thought...

    That really surprises me.

He never actually says anything about the movies.

And I am biased, because I discovered (after James decided to invite you and Glen to be moderators on the DG) that James did this because he was trying to control me and Glen was the best ally (and I seem to recall I was not terribly popular with you at the time).

Glen pretended to put the past aside whilst carrying a grudge and maintaining an agenda to do me harm.  And he claims to be a philosopher - well, I guessHitler probably was a philosopher (just had a shit philosophy!).

But I'm glad you are still friends after he tossed your friendship aside to become a DG moderator!  ;)

It's all good, Michael, artwork is always subjective.

Glen's a good friend, a talented artist and a huge POTA fan like we
all are and knows the movies very well.
