That Palisades board is having controversy
over that "blind" packaging thing. http://www.palisadestoys.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42
. I agree, it will probably hurt the line. If someone wants a Zauis they can't
just walk into Toys 'R Us and buy a Zauis. They'll buy 3 Ape packages and get
two Corneliuses and a Nova. But they wanted Zauis. Do they go back and buy some
more to try their luck? Or do they say, "@&%# it! I'm going to collect
"Smallville" instead". Or do they trade with Rory, who has 12 Zauises but no
Novas?
I was hoping this Palisades stuff would be a
way to get POTA back into the mainstream, like their Muppets line. But that
doesn't look like the way they're going to go. It will be hard for casual buyers
to hook into the line.
Hello? I feel like I'm talking to myself
(more than usual). Is anyone here? Oh, I see. The silent treatment. I get it.
That's fine. You don't have to talk to me. But I'm not trading my Zauis. Oh,
look. I have a booger. - - - Jeff

Yea but getting a set from eBay shouldn't be a big hassle if you wanted your Zaius... look at all the cool "blind" packaging the Japanese toy companies come out with every few months. Those are by far
the nicest stuff on the market today.
OK... I hope the Palisade toys ROCK my hairy butt off when they do finally come out though... even if I don't have a hairy butt!! I loves me those ape toys...
So there... see I'm still alive!

Hi Jeff
I agree this idea sucks.
However, it seems to be obligatory for
SOMETHING to suck when they release new POTA lines….right?

I just wrote this:
OK - so you are starting with Planet of
the Apes (POTA) the movie - the first mvie in the
series.
The packaging idea is, IMHO, going to hurt
sales.
I am an active POTA fan and I own the most
popular Yahoo chat group where we hold many and frequent chats on the
topic. I pay thousands for single
vintage POTA items and it pains me to see Medicoms of
POTA selling for $1.99.
People want to see something new. And a very popular option is a 3-pack with
the 3 orangutans (who do the "see no evil, hear
no evil" pose) and complete with desk, chairs, backdrop etc.
Medicom
did Licuis, but nobody (except one
excellent independent artist) ever tried Julius. Or Doctor Galen, another
chimp doctor (no, not the Galen from the TV Show!). Or the other 4 Astronauts. Or an
Icarus ship
to place them in.
Mego
gave us a horse and some playsets but
man they were lame!
And while Sidesow
sucks us dry with new dollies sporting different accesories
and or clothing - did it ever occur to them to just sell separate outfits? I realise you probably won't have separate
clothing (or will you?!??!), but maybe interchangable
parts would be a fun way to get two outfits for one character.
I hope you also get to the TV Show and
even the Cartoon (Return to the POTA).
Don't bother with the Burton
mistake though - eh?
Can't wait to see what you guys do -
please let me know if you want help and or ideas.
Cheers from Australia
Michael

I stumbled onto a message
board where you can ask questions to Palisades about their upcoming POTA toys
(YOU can ask; I'm too shy). So far here's what they said:
They'll start arriving the
first part of 2006; they haven't even started sculpting yet.
They will have
"blind" packaging (you won't know what figure you're getting, thus
you'll have to spend and spend to get the one you want)
They say they can do anything
from the first film with "options on the others"; they have likeness
rights
The first batch will be 9 -
12 figures

You don't know what you're getting until you've bought it? Sounds
like something you'd run into at a Bazaar or charity fund raiser --
not a sensible marketing ploy. Aren't these tricks used to talk a
young kid out of their allowance? In any case, I don't have money
kicking around to spend on grab bags. Too bad. I hope they don't do
it.

they probably just put on a cheaply mass produced generic body which
they can then sell for an awful lot more than they would be able to
charge for an outfit pack (probably also cheaply made in some Asian
sweat shop!)
It probably comes down to how much they can sell the things for. If
they could make more of a profit by just selling the outfits they
would be crazy to not be doing it.

They will be
like trading cards (well, until Rittenhouse did Trading
Cards!!!).
Buy a pack
and get what you get - keep buying/trade etc.
It will make
the prospect of having them sealed in the box very
interesting.
It could be
fun.
People like
me might buy 20, open them, then advertise doubles for sale on the
group.
As I said my
only issue is that this all means we don't get to keep them sealed in the
box.
You still get
what you want but it has to be opened by another person
first.
This would be
good for something like Lord of the Rings, but nobody cares enough about POTA t
o get into this do they?

Also helps to

>Fun my ass!! I have a 5 yr. old who I love sharing my Planet of the
Apes obsession. I don't buy the sideshow because they cost too much.
The Medicom were cool and priced where I could keep a set in the
package for me, and I bought about 10 core figures that my son plays
with. This is a nightmare! I was really looking foward to going to
the store and buying my set and letting my son pick up a new figure
every now and then for his collection. Most Apes fans are going to be
adults, not kids trading figures with their friends. The only up-side
is that when these tank, they will be cheap on ebay, but the line
won't last more than one series and that SUCKS! There is still time
for them to fix this grave error and I hope we can convince them
before they get too involved with the project to change anything. I
feel like Sally Struthers. "Won't you help?" <.html

Sounds to me like they're trying to copy the way some Kubrick figures are sold in Japan, or the way Heroclix figures are sold here in the U.S. Of course, the price point is rather low on these. Depending on the
size of the figures and the detail on the sculpting they may not be able to keep a low price point on the Apes figures.
There's also the issue of whether or not the mix of figures in each case would be even or if some figures would be more rare than others, or if there would be variants.
Seems to me Apes is the wrong property to try this on, as the market is already small and there aren't many kids who are into it. They'd be better off trying it with their Muppets or Sesame Street licenses.

Sealed packaging sucks is right.
There have been times I would
have like a certain anime figure,
but because the set was blind
packaged I didn't bother. I
usually am not interested in
the others, and don't want
duplicates. No point it wasting

Thought I would let you know that it has been a while since I asked
them if there were plans on a TV series Ape line but the time I did
I did get a response telling me that they would forward my request
on to the department that made the decesions. BUT, when they were at
Toy Fair I asked one of thier reps on their Toy Fair chat about
future TV Ape releases and he said that the Ape line was selling, in
his opinion, very well and if enough people showed an interest that
it would be possible because they have the license to do the TV
series. So, all we can do is flood their office.
What do you think about their Caesar? I asked him why didn't they do
a sculpt that looked more like Caesar instead of using the Cornelius
head. He said that is was a differnt sculpt and I told him to take a
close look because it wasn't. So, according to his suggestion, I
sent a email telling them their was a difference and even sent
pictures and asked them to do a new sculpt. I never heard backi from
them.

POTA isn't being singled out. Here's a
review of their "X-Files" PALZ (kinda like the Kubricks). http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_040605a.htm
. MWC talks about the blind packaging and that "(Palisades) plan on going blind
across the board with the smaller figures". POTA will be 4". I guess the
Japanese do it a lot. For collectors it might be a good way to go. I mean hard
core collectors who don't mind dropping some dough. Lines like "Star Wars" often
have hard to get figures that some one who knows someone at the toy store gets,
or toy store employees hoard them and sell them on e-bay for $200. Blind
packaging levels the playing field for rare figures (chase figures, as the
review calls them). But it will play havoc with getting non-fans or dormant fans
interested in POTA. If they see an excellent POTA at Toys 'R Us and go, "Oh, I
remember POTA!". Maybe they will start collecting and build up the sales, then
Fox will say (in a robotic voice): My! I guess POTA is still popular. Greenlight
that movie." Last month there were trade paper ads crowing that "Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles" did $ 600 million in merchandise last year. And that's with no
movie or anything. Now they're planning a cartoon feature. Don't know what that
has to do with POTA except toys that people can SEE on the shelves is the best
bet to get POTA out there right now. If the sculpts are good. Ha! I said 4"! - -

I just wrote
this:
OK - so you are
starting with Planet of the Apes (POTA) the movie - the first mvie in the series.
The packaging idea
is, IMHO, going to hurt sales.
I am an active POTA
fan and I own the most popular Yahoo chat group where we hold many and
frequent chats on the topic. I
pay thousands for single vintage POTA items and it pains me to see Medicoms of POTA selling for
$1.99.
People want to see
something new. And a very popular
option is a 3-pack with the 3 orangutans (who do the
"see no evil, hear no evil" pose) and complete with desk, chairs, backdrop
etc.
Medicom
did Licuis, but nobody (except one excellent independent
artist) ever tried Julius. Or Doctor Galen, another chimp doctor (no, not the Galen from the
TV Show!). Or the other 4 Astronauts. Or an Icarus
ship to place them in.
Mego
gave us a horse and
some playsets but man they were
lame!
And while Sidesow
sucks us dry with new dollies sporting different
accesories and or clothing - did it ever occur to
them to just sell separate outfits?
I realise you probably won't have separate clothing (or will you?!??!),
but maybe interchangable parts would be a fun way to
get two outfits for one character.
I hope you also get
to the TV Show and even the Cartoon (Return to the POTA). Don't bother with the
Burton
mistake though -
eh?
Can't wait to see
what you guys do - please let me know if you want help and or
ideas.
Cheers from
Australia

I stumbled onto a message
board where you can ask questions to Palisades about their upcoming POTA toys
(YOU can ask; I'm too shy). So far here's what they
said:
They'll start arriving the
first part of 2006; they haven't even started sculpting
yet.
They will have "blind"
packaging (you won't know what figure you're getting, thus you'll have to
spend and spend to get the one you want)
They say they can do
anything from the first film with "options on the others"; they have likeness
rights
The first batch will be 9 -
12 figures

It's legal, and it's not a grab bag. It'll be a box with a picture
of all the figures available. And you'll say, "Wow! I hope it's THAT one" and it
won't be. So you'll say, "Welll, I have enough for one more". And this time
you'll get the one you want, but Little Johnny won't be so lucky. - - -

You have it right except they are selling at
stores.
And there will be no mutants - it will be
the first POTA movie first with (supposedly) around 12 figures.
I am going to suggest to them that they do
the following figures and DRASTICALLY re-think the packaging:
Taylor in ANSA suit - packaged in a
suspended animation chamber (that inserts into an ICARUS available
separately).
Dodge in
ANSA suit - packaged in a suspended animation chamber (that inserts into an
ICARUS available separately).
Landon in ANSA suit - packaged in a suspended
animation chamber (that inserts into an ICARUS available
separately).
Stewart in ANSA
suit - packaged in a suspended animation chamber (that inserts into an ICARUS
available separately).
Dr Galen - packaged with
Operating Table.
Julius - packaged in a
"cage" playset with hose, interchangable body parts to adapt your Taylor (or a
second ragged Taylor).
Nova - Packaged in a
cart that can be attached to horse.
Gorilla Soldier -
Packaged with a horse (that can have the cart above attached to
it).
Zira,
Cornelius,
Lucius 3 pack in the
"veterinary" hopital with interchangable doctor's
whites.
Zaius + other committee
members in 3 pack with tables, chairs, with
backdrop.
What do people think of
these?

There'd be some of the "Sideshow syndrome" involved here, because you'd be duplicating some... With Taylor, you'd almost have to have two versions (bearded and unbearded) even if they'd go the
interchangeable route... While I don't mind that idea, in his case it would almost be a neccessity... As far as where you'd get into duplicating, the astronauts come to mind... Would they be bearded or
unbearded, and in the case of Stewart, would she be the "mummified" version or the unaged version, those are variables to consider... With the chimp "three pack" at no time did they ever show those
three in "doctor's whites" so I'm not sure where you came up with that idea... As far as the orangutan "three pack" you'd really need to make it a four pack, because in the court scene,
there were four orangs (Dr. Maximus, Dr. Honorius, Dr. Zaius, and President of the Assembly. It'd work as a three pack if you made Zaius available seperately and did the others as the three pack.)
I'd prefer to see a Stewart figure included as part of the ship, rather than her own figure... Replace the Stewart with another gorilla like The Hunt Leader... Maybe do the astronauts as a three pack too or just drop
the idea of doing them all and just stick with Taylor... Clearing away the astronauts would make room for more gorillas, which is what a lot of people seem to want anyway (after reading the posts on their sight...)

With Taylor
there are 2 Taylors - one astro and one captive.
So a quick

Taylor in a 2-pack with Nova and they can the cart I

unbearded) even if they'd go the interchangeable route... While I don't mind
that idea, in his case it would almost be a neccessity...

I'd stick to
the Astros being in the chambers so unbearded and Stewart
mummified.
It would be
cool to have a special rare UN mummified Stewart as it is rare to see her UN
mummified!
Adjustment
made below.

As
far as where you'd get into duplicating, the astronauts come to mind... Would
they be bearded or unbearded, and in the case of Stewart, would she be the
"mummified" version or the unaged version, those are variables to consider...

With the chimp "three pack" at

As far
as the orangutan "three pack" you'd really need to make it a four pack,
because in the court scene, there were four orangs (Dr. Maximus, Dr. Honorius,
Dr. Zaius, and President of the Assembly. It'd work as a three pack if you
made Zaius available seperately and did the others as the three
pack.) <.html

I'd prefer to see a
Stewart figure included as part of the ship, rather than her own figure...
Replace the Stewart with another gorilla like The Hunt Leader... Maybe do
the astronauts as a three pack too or just drop the idea of doing them all
and just stick with Taylor... Clearing away the astronauts would make room
for more gorillas, which is what a lot of people seem to want anyway (after
reading the posts on their sight...)

To all our recently joined new members -
welcome!
Please feel free to jump
in and contribute if a subject takes your fancy, or start one up
yourself!
MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW
PLANET OF THE APES TV SHOW COMIC BOOK -
GOING
HOME!!!
Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of
the page and click on the link underneath
the logo....this will take you to the
PDF file of the first 3
pages.
Another new
ongoing comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET OF
THE APES can be found in the files section of the group or you can just
click on the handy links on the Home Page
to view the latest and previous chapters!
And new for your viewing pleasure - Uncle Manny's Musings! A
new light hearted look at the world by one of our wisest (Ha!) apes, check
out the Home Page for a link to his latest piece of wisdom!
;-)
Don't forget
we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is
the DG Archives group:
This group was created to store old posts from the group
which have been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to free up space
as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore.
As this group is
so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts
forever we like to keep a copy of them all. They can be found in the Files
section listed by month and year.
There is
also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in th
e group's Files section,
their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to be enjoyed
by all:
Finally there's
the Photos group:
Where photos
and files
are occasionally moved to save space on the main DG
group
All the sites can
be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.
And don't forget
to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and all that
great stuff in the Files section.
While you're here
why not participate in a Poll or check out all those wonderful links
and generally have a fun filled
family experience!

There's not going to be a two-pack
with blind packaging - - - we'd figure out who it is. If it's going to be blind,
one human only! If we're going to get a lot of doubles they better be apes. - -

Yes, I
agree.
With Taylor
there are 2 Taylors - one astro and one captive.
So a quick
shuffle.......put Astro Taylor in the suspended animation chamber and wild
Taylor in a 2-pack with Nova and they can the cart I
mentioned.
Adjustments
to lost made below.

There'd be some of the "Sideshow syndrome" involved here, because
you'd be duplicating some... With Taylor, you'd almost have to have two
versions (bearded and unbearded) even if they'd go the interchangeable
route... While I don't mind that idea, in his case it would almost be a
neccessity...

Fox did POTA because Jabobs showed them how FANTASTIC VOYAGE had "legs." They did STAR WARS partly because they'd done APES, but the Fox of yesteryear isn't the Fox of today. The Fox of
today is the one that sucks, BIG TIME!
