Well Anthony thank you for an extremely
well thought out critique!
I’ll let Neil respond to the artwork comments and I’ll share some
secrets with you about the story!
Firstly, it is NOT bad news! The
points you make bother me too, but they illustrate the flexibility one needs to
acquire when working in a team.
The first 3 pages were essentially drawn
to begin Dave Ballard’s story “Monument”, where 2 of the 3
fugitives go into SF and are recognised by the natives there. The climax is the revelation of a statue
made as a tribute, or “monument” to the pair and their skipper.
Neil researched SF for months leading up
to this and pencilled about 8 pages.
When Neil and I decided against “Monument” we decided it
would be absolutely tragic to lose the art and I therefore attempted to work my
own story in.
What we get is a compromise.
My original story is actually set in Houston,
Virdon’s home town, where Virdon
is separated from Galen and Burke. In
the comic, I have to try a different angle. The title is “Going Home”
because they are indeed…..going home……but that may be syntactically
misleading!
I guess I don’t think it’s TOO
hard to believe that this farm boy spent SOME time in SF and called it home. And hey – it IS a COMIC! ;)
As for not mentioning it straight away –
he is still in awe/shock. There is
no ocean under the GG Bridge; the city looks intact and recognisable to a 70’s
human from afar, and Alan has been shit stirring him because he clings on to a
hope of returning to his wife and family….something Zaius
exploited in the TV Show and something others might use to their advantage in
this story!
Not only that but Galen is becoming more
distant from his friends….have you noticed? He too wants to go home.
By the way, the date is also an error…it
is actually 10 years on from the landing.
These guys are getting VERY tired of running around from city to city
and are also somewhat getting on each others’ nerves…as one
WOULD! ;)
The earthquakes…well, blame Ballard’s
setting again! J However it will be
revealed that SF’s seismic activity has heightened over the centuries and
that is the very reason there are no apes and the human civilisation are free
to…..but that would be telling!
J
I think the guest star is a fake Tuska gorilla –
will that do? J
I love the way you put that Anthony, thank
you!
And I certainly wish I did not have the
limitations of SF, but I think you would agree that it is not a problem when we
get that magnificent artwork as a consequence!
Thanks again Anthony!
I am fondly reminded of old times when your
voice was prominent on the group.
Michael

Part 2
And now, Michael, the bad
news; there are a couple of minor things that
bother me in the story thus far:
First, it
always seemed contrived when the fugitives entered a village
and Galen discovered that he knew the local Prefect, or a
situation
developed
that just happened to be covered in ANSA's standard course in
Astronaut
Training. It's central to the story, I know, but I feel that
same way
about Virdon's having lived in San Francisco. The point is
made in the
story that he only ever previously mentioned growing up on
a farm, so
you're obviously trying to give Virdon a history with more
substance,
but I think it odd that he wouldn't mention San Francisco
until he was
well into the city. I know that I, in that same situation,
would say
something as soon as I recognized the city, and then I'd
insist on
trying to find my old apartment and anything else that would
provide a
tangible connection to my past.
Second, San
Francisco's seismic disturbances are well-known, but
they're
really not that frequent. It's just another thing that seems
contrived,
like the way nearly every movie that's set in New Orleans
has to
include a Mardi Gras parade and a jazz band in a funeral
procession.
It has
occurred to me that these two flawed plot elements are meant to
evoke the
spirit of the television series. If so, you've done a
brilliant
job, Michael. Although we're still in the intro and the guest
star hasn't
appeared in his ill-fitting makeup yet, this is a good
solid start.
I'm excited by the promise of a story that takes us in a
new
direction, and I look forward to learning which direction you've
chosen for
us.
And now I
nominate shadow571957 to receive Part 2 next, because we need
to hear from more lurkers.

Neil, the quality of the artwork, as usual, is
excellent. Although
there's nothing in the artwork that's specifically
reminiscent of the
illustrations in the Brown/Watson annuals, the
subject matter makes me
want to find similarities. I got a nice strong
feeling of nostalgia
reading this installment.
It was a bit of a shock opening the first page to
see a street that
I've driven on. I'd like to hear how others feel
about seeing familiar
landmarks in Planet of the Apes stories. Growing
up in the southern
U.S., I never felt any connection with the
settings of the Apes movies
when I saw them as a child. Until I moved to
California in the early
'90s, New York and the west coast were
near-mythical places that, for
me, only really existed in movies.
And now, Michael, the bad news; there are a couple
of minor things that
bother me in the story thus far:
First, it always seemed contrived when the
fugitives entered a village
and Galen discovered that he knew the local
Prefect, or a situation
developed that just happened to be covered in
ANSA's standard course in
Astronaut Training. It's central to the story, I
know, but I feel that
same way about Virdon's having lived in San
Francisco. The point is
made in the story that he only ever previously
mentioned growing up on
a farm, so you're obviously trying to give Virdon
a history with more
substance, but I think it odd that he wouldn't
mention San Francisco
until he was well into the city. I know that I, in
that same situation,
would say something as soon as I recognized the
city, and then I'd
insist on trying to find my old apartment and
anything else that would
provide a tangible connection to my past.
Second, San Francisco's seismic disturbances are
well-known, but
they're really not that frequent. It's just
another thing that seems
contrived, like the way nearly every movie that's
set in New Orleans
has to include a Mardi Gras parade and a jazz band
in a funeral
procession.
It has occurred to me that these two flawed plot
elements are meant to
evoke the spirit of the television series. If so,
you've done a
brilliant job, Michael. Although we're still in
the intro and the guest
star hasn't appeared in his ill-fitting makeup
yet, this is a good
solid start. I'm excited by the promise of a story
that takes us in a
new direction, and I look forward to learning
which direction you've
chosen for us.
And now I nominate shadow571957 to receive Part 2
next, because we need
to hear from more lurkers.

My point is, Tim, that
I believe our good friends at Scrolls have been taken for a ride.
If I’m right and this ape is not
drawn by Tuska, then it is possible that other things
have been published that could have also lacked authenticity. Of course our good friends would be as
aware of this as they were aware of the Tuska fake……
The BIG question is – IS IT
GENUINE? The next question is –
HOW DO WE KNOW THAT?
I can almost bet none of our good friends at Scrolls will answer either of
these questions effectively.

I can assure folks that this is highly unlikely as Scrolls interviews tend
to be secured through official channels (e.g. contacting a company to get an
interview someone about the toys, etc.) or other reliable means. For
example, the Ploog interview - I am not about reveal any names but I will
say that our initial contact details for him came from a very reliable
source, and I was there when John spoke to the source in question.
>Maybe that joker who sent in the fake "missing episodes" article
>has had a lend of our good friends on more than one occasion, and

I can assure everyone that this is not the case either. The "missing
episodes" article was submitted by a Scrolls reader, whereas most of our
interviews are things we actively seek out through the appropriate channels.
>I ask again that Alan tell us who the sketch was sent to and
>how he "knows" it is authentic.
It was sent to John - I had no part in the chain correspondence so I cannot
add anything further to that. I would only reiterate that, as Neil and I
agreed, I can't think of any reason why someone would fake such a sketch or
pretend to be Tuska, especially as there was no reward to be gained. If you
are asking me if I can prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt that he drew it
then of course not, short of me actually standing watching him draw it, but
then that applies to the content of most publications.
That is genuinely all I can offer on the matter. It's unfortunate if this is
not enough but truthfully there is nothing more I can say, and I don't
propose to post any further on the subject as we would only be going round
in circles.
With that settled, I would like to take off my "Scrolls representative" hat
and put my "PotA fan" hat back on and get back to discussing matters other
than Scrolls. To that end, please add me to the queue of people who wish to
see the next chapter of your comic strip as I have enjoyed the first few
pages.

I'll tell you what set me off. It was that AOL poll. The one
about chick that was a veg out for 15 years after her husband choked her out,
then they starved her for 2 weeks and then when
she wouldn't die quick enough for him, he kicked the parents out of the
room and finished her off in 10 minutes with a pillow. Yeah, I know
there's no proof. But everything I've seen points to him getting away with
murder. It basically said, did the judiciary do a good job, or listen
too much to the legislative branch. Well, I don't think they listened
enough. My feeling is you don't withhold water from anyone.
Ever! If you want to put them out of their misery then whack them

don't care if they're in a coma or brain dead! It may be bliss for all we

Hollywood hunk Mark Wahlberg has slammed Eminem,

for giving a false impression of tough, impoverished childhoods in their music and films. The Planet Of The Apes
star has lambasted Damon, his co-star in new movie The Departed, for romanticizing difficult upbringings in
Good Will Hunting

8 Mile, in an interview with Details magazine. The 33-year-old actor complains, "My childhood wasn't like some 8 Mile
bulls**t where you go and have a rap-off. Or like West Side Story

Everything was handled correctly
That's a matter of opinion. I've heard different
things back and forth. There does seem to
be some truth to the theory that this guy
tried to kill his wife. And I don't think he
should get away with it. A nurse did hear
him say, "How long is this bitch going to live?"
And I don't think it's a coincidence that she
died ten minutes after he kicked her parents
out of the room. Number of people felt that
he didn't want her to come out of it and finger
him. He did remarry incredibly quickly for
someone who's wife had just become a
vegetable. Could she have been rehabed?
That's a long shot. But if he did it I'd hate
to see him get away with it. I don't know
if the autopsy will yield anything, but I do
know he had her cremated which is against
her religion. As was giving up the ghost,
as he said she wanted. There was no living
will. It was just his word. True, all the legal
stuff was by the book. Anyone who can say
what's what in this thing is only kidding
themselves. Only two people really knew,
and one's dead.

mention San Francisco
until he was well into the city.
That's true, Virdon is a farm boy (and according to the novels, he came from Houston, TX if I remember right... On the show itself, he mentions being from Jackson County, which there is in TX... So, in his adulthood,
he probably migrated to the big city, but still lived in TX the whole time...) <.html

.htmlI love reading comics. For those curious where
Arseface comes from, he was a character in a comic
called the Preacher by Garth Ennis. If you havent
heard of it I would recommend picking it up. Fantastic
read.
Ive been reading comics since the 5th grade. Im not
as much of a geek as I was back then (maybe im just
better at hiding it) 20 years later, I read 15 to 20
titles every month. I can say without a doubt that if
this book were to ever see print I would definitely
add it to my pull list. One thing some books fail to
do nowadays is to end on a good cliff hanger. Youve
got to give people a reason to come back. Going home
seems to have one every other page. The only thing Im
concerned with is whether Michael will be able to keep
it up. The artwork is awesome, without a doubt. Im in
the city all the time and I can tell you that except
for the ruble, the burned-out vehicle and the other
assorted post-apocalyptic rubbish you got Lombard
down. The likeness is uncanny. The scenery and the
characters are so well drawn they put some of the
other books on the market to shame.
Im not really concerned with the minutia. Why is
Virdon calling SF home? It doesnt really matter. Im
more concerned with a good story and your well on your
way. Really great work guys. Its like you found a
lost episode from the series, paused the tape every so
often and printed out a few screen captures and added
word bubbles. I wonder where things will go from here.
Will they travel farther south to Moffett field where
Lockheed builds all those fancy flying machines for
the military or will the gang will go across the bay
and find a few nuclear wessles? I cant wait to find
out.
Thanx for the story

I have the
same sized Escape poster with the "spiral" design....
And smaller
ones for Conquest, Battle, Beneath...
And the Go
Ape marathon.
I do. I have one-sheets from all five movies, plus
the "Go Ape" poster from the re-release.

Hi
Kevin.
This is a
very good question.
Over the
years many of us have come to know each other quite well and we do, at times,
discuss things that are off topic.
HISTORY - On
the "POTA" group this OT discussion caused a lot of "fights" and sometimes
people left the group. When we started the DG we tried to "ban" OT
discussions.
Currently I
am still thinking about this.
For example,
T explained why he was shitty about the Polls. The polls ARE POTA related.
etc, etc.
At the time
of 911 things went VERY off topic - and so they should have. At other
times, people (eg Tim and Rory and T) all feel they need to comment......and
comment to the other 200 of us.
Well, I don't
think this should really be a huge problem.
It would
help, though, if people try very hard to keep it polite, and keep it to a
minimum.
It would also
be nice, Kevin, if we could hear from you how you like the Within strip and the
Going Home comic........
I'm happy to
discuss.
Michael

I think that the ones you may have seen were the ones produced in the
80's by the publisher "Adventure comics". They were all black and
white. The same guys put out four issues that were reprints of the
Marvel "Terror on the planet of the Apes" storyline.
Charlton has never put out a line of POTA comics.
Another possibility is that they were labelled as "Curtis" comics,
which are really just the Marvel comics (Some had Marvel logos, some
had "Curtis" logos). There was a reason for that, although I can't
recall why at the moment.
Not sure where I fit into this queing system to see the next
installment of the comics, but please send them to me soon!

.html Okay, I've read part 2 of "Going Home" and my thoughts follow. If you've not
read it yet, don't read on as there may be spoilers. I'm only on digest mode
so I've totally lost track of who has requested it but Michael, please send
it on to whoever is next in line!
COMMENTS ON THE STORY BELOW...
- The characters seems pretty faithful to the TV series at the moment. The
line about moving to the big smoke to me didn't sound like something I could
hear Alan saying but I'm not sure why, I can't put my finger on it. However,
that's a very minor point as on the whole the characters are just as they
are in the show, so well done there.
- The art is terrific as always, it reminds me of the black and white stuff
that John Bolton did for the UK annuals. The three panels across the middle
of page 5 are especially atmospheric.
- "Man... or nature?" I like that aspect of the story. I've always thought
that although there was definitely a nuclear war of sorts, there is no way
that could account for the downfall of man in itself so I like to think
there were other factors involved. Which brings me to my next point.
- The look of the city is terrific. I've mentioned before that I'm a massive
fan of post-apocalyptic stuff and have watched more of that genre of film
than any normal man should. But one thing that slightly annoys me is that
not many of them get the post-apocalyptic cityscapes just right, but it's
spot on here. Some are not ruined enough, some are unrecognisable. I like
the shots of NYC in Beneath, the ruined cities in the TV show and now this
story too because it's a middle ground. I prefer to think that while a few
cities would have been flattened by nuclear war the majority of them will
have been ravaged by riots and the general breakdown of society and then,
with mankind mostly out of the way, attacked by nature too. That's whay I
see when I look at the city in this story.
- The opening scenes have been faithful to the show as well. It is genuinely
unfolding much as the opening to most of the regular episodes did (i.e. our
heroes are out wandering and then suddenly propelled into action and
whatever crisis faces them this week). The only concern I've had about the
story is of course that we've seen the Earthquake thing before but I'm sure
you've got something up your sleeve so I am eager to see what you have in
store to take this in a different direction.
- The full page pic of the three fugitives... The likenesses of Alan and
Pete are good, but it's Galen's that really makes it. Mr Foster has totally
nailed that facial expression.
- One other thing about the post-apocalyptic city - the fact that they are
wandering through not just a deserted city but a deserted San Francisco
reminded me of ON THE BEACH, one of my fave movies. (And this story is
written by an Aussie too... coincidence?)
- The final page. Wow. This to me demonstrates why Neil should be doing this
kind of stuff professionally - and being the total comic geek that I am, I'm
not saying that lightly. This is the work of a master craftsman. A lot of
people don't understand that being a good artist isn't enought to be a good
comic strip artist - there is also a degree of storytelling too. Action has
to flow from panel to panel, you can't just draw one picture after another.
Here is the perfect example - the sound effect in the background on the top
of the page, the rubble falling down the page, the panels themselves
seemingly shaking down off the page... it's dynamic, it's energetic, it's
stunning and it enhances the scene no end. Being simply talented at drawing
isn't enough when it comes to scenes like this. Superb.
Roll on part 3!

Now that we have actually been getting some feedback on the
comics, I am wondering if the group would like to participate in the direction
of the comics.
It really is a treat to just see the new pages when they are
done.
However if people are interested, I may consider telling
where we are going to get comments and possibly make adjustments as we go
along.
I would probably deliver the story in the same manner as the
comics are delivered.
Thoughts?

.htmlOK so here's my 2 cents worth on part 2. They tie in to some of Alan's
comments so I'll reply with his comments attached.
I agree that the setup and pacing of events is very reminiscient (sp?)
of the TV series. The 'natural' events occur on cue to bring the story
to the next twist. The problem with the TV show is that these events
seem too concocted, but they play out better in this comic format.
While I agree that the full page splash was just awesome with Galen's
rendition (best I've ever seen yet), both Alan and Pete look downright
smashed (as in hangover). Now I could understand that look after the
'natural event' at the end of part 2, but why so ragged at that point?
(Well I guess 25 years of wandering is a good reason ;) ). I confess
I've been made privy to the pencils of the next installation (thanks
Michael), so I can safely say that the Next page is gonna be great one.
There's one panel that has me completely confused, but perhaps it'll all
be cleared up once the text is added.
Whos next?
OT: I too an familiar with "On the Beach", both the (highly underrated)
movie and the novel written by Nevil Shute. The story is of course set
mainly in Aussie-land, but is Shute an Aussie himself? Didn't know that.

Thanks for sending this, Michael! It's nice to be kept in the loop, so
to

The comic is very good, as usual. The drawings are, of course, very
realistic! Great job, Neil. But the writing is particularly good in
the TV
strip. You have captured the tone-of-voice of the the characters. Nice
job, Michael.
A couple technical questions? Is that San Francisco (Golden Gate
Bridge,
trolley) or is it Los Angeles (The City of Angels) or am I completely
geographically ignorant -- which is most likely. If there is a mistake,
which being from out of town could be easy enough, I thought you'd want
to
know. Problem is, I'm not sure there is a mistake. You might want to
research it, though.

As far as direction, all the comics to date have been way better than
anything I could come up with so I'd better keep my nose out of that.
I consider Neil a pro as far as the art goes and given that that is his
day good (right?) he's done great. That being the case and going on the
assumption that Michael is not a writer by profession, his output so
far has been phenominal. At least that is a branch you could explore in
the future if you ever want (or need) to change your day job.
