Does anyone know the name of the book that's about about some scientists and they are in suspended animation and they crash on a planet ruled by intelligent primates? It
was written before Boulle's Monkey Planet. I think its called "Homos..." something. Its driving me nuts and I would appreciate some help!

In the most recent issue of Simian Scrolls, it mentions two "APES-like" books that pre-date Monkey Planet... They are titled: Genus Homo
by L. Sprague de Camp & P. Schuyler Miller... Another is titled Across Time by David Grinnell...

The one he's thinking of is "Genus Homo".
The other one isn't much like POTA. Also cool is the horsie section of
"Gulliver's Travels". - - - Jeff

Fox has given you the green light to resurrect the POTA TV
Show.
You have some decisions to make.
You want to conclude the 1974 TV Series and generate a new,
better show.
Keeping in mind it has been 30 years, how would you write in
Burke, Virdon and Galen?
I know for a FACT that Ron Harper would be available, but it
is unlikely that James Naughton would be involved.
Would you go with a double/lookalike
or would you write Pete out?
Comments? Thoughts?

I'd call Naughten's agent and let him know with his last gig being a "Celebrix" commercial he could be doing better... I'd MAKE him come back on.
I would do a 4 hour mini movie pilot alla Battlestar Galactica... as for the story I'd make Whitty write something up (cause he'd so damn CHEAP!!) and have Neil come up with some story boards (again
CHEAP!!) <Remeber I'm from FOX> ... as for the new story lines... not really sure but damnit it would be a winner.. alla Battlestar Galactica!!!

Pete and Galen would have been killed in a raid.
Virdon manages to escape and hooks up with
another sympathetic chimp, like Kira or someone.

Hey, national commercials pay good money.
I don't see any Land Of The Lost reunion shows.

I know for a FACT that Ron Harper

Would you go with a double/lookalike or would you

Pete
and Galen would have been killed in a raid.
Virdon
manages to escape and hooks up with

I would just pick their story up where it left off on the original series... I doubt that they'd still be running around after thirty years anyway, so it would make sense to just pick it up where it left off rather
than have it that they survived 30 years of wandering...

I've just kind of assumed he was since he wrote "On the Beach" and also
"Walkabout". I'm pretty sure he wrote another famous book whose title
escapes me that was also set in Oz.

Here are my thoughts.
Roddy obviously isn't available and it's highly unlikely that Naughton would
have anything to do with it (although for the right money, you never
know...) so it's really only Harper that would return.
First things first, this show cannot survive by just trying to appeal to the
original audience. Hell, even half the original audience probably don't
remember enough about it to pick up from where it ended. So I would start
afresh with a new cast (I'd go with the RETURN dynamic of two men and a
woman) - I'd also give consideration to how they get there. It seems to me
that we've done astronauts to death so it'd be either some kind of time
travel experiment or else maybe some cryogenic experiment.
They'd awake in the future many years after the original TV show, discover
that Earth has been taken over by apes, etc. (and since there's no space
travel involved we'd not need to worry about them believing whether they
were on Earth or not - they'd know). After some introductory story
showcasing this strange new world, they'd run into Alan Virdon, who'd tell
them all about what happened to him and his crew (a quick recap of the
original show's premise, meaning we can continue from there without needing
to spend ages explaining who all these characters were).
We'd now learn that Galen and Burke were eventually killed by Zaius and Urko
and as a result Virdon is a bitter and twisted old man who hates the apes.
He's finally at the end of his tether and has hatched an elaborate plot to
lead a human revolt.
Our new travellers however gradually realise that this plot will end up
being a bloodthirsty coup with high death tolls on both sides and decide to
go against Alan and avert it. They save the day but because of their known
association with Alan they are implicated in the plot. Cue the action-packed
finale which sees Virdon redeem himself again by sacrificing his own life to
save the lives of the three new characters, who are now forced to go on the
run and voila, we have a similar premise to the original show but with two
men and a woman rather than two men and an ape (two men and a woman would
give rise to its own set of problems I think).
Of course, we'd discover later in the series that Virdon didn't actually
die, he was merely horribly injured and would be back later in the season
even madder than ever.

However, there needs to be an enormous change in the character of the

Keeping in mind it has been 30
years, how would you write in Burke, Virdon and Galen?
I would just pick their story up where it left off on the original series... I
doubt that they'd still be running around after thirty years anyway, so it
would make sense to just pick it up where it left off rather than have it that
they survived 30 years of wandering...
I don't think you'd need the original actors to portray their characters, you'd
just need the characters themselves...

Again – extremely close to what I
have planned.
I have a twist on the suspended animation
though, that I think you will all like. A similar idea, but more in line with the
current big issues today (not suspended animation, but a different method by
which we might “resurrect the dead!).

.html Sorry guys, I'm a little behind the times on the posts as I was out of town for a while. I've
just been going back through to see what I missed (man you guys can talk!! - so fun to
read it all!) and I just wanted to make a point in Sideshow's defense here (as a fairly rabid
collector of theirs! - and not just of POTA - have you seen their new Grievous statue??
Amazing... anyway, back on topic!). I think what we're talking about here is the difference
between "dolls" and "collectibles". These are technically collectibles - I don't know a whole
lot of people who actually take them down and play with them and re-dress them etc. (I
know I don't - I'm always nervous of messing something up! - that's probably one of the
reasons they don't sell the clothes separately too - it cuts down on accidentally damaging
the figure) - they are not for children to play with (the amount of work that goes into them
drives up the cost beyond that level) - they are for displaying and enjoying as an adult -
admiring the detailing in the costumes and props, etc. I personally like having the
different variations of characters so that I can display them all at the same time - rather
than one day having astronaut Brent and then one day having slave Brent, I can have both
at the same time, forming a character collage. But that's just my opinion. I mean,
honestly, how often would you be changing the clothes on them? Personally I would
probably just leave the figure in one outfit anyway. This way we can choose - would I
rather have this one, or that one? Or both?? Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. I suppose it
would be nice to have the OPTION of buying just the outfit on any variation, but then we
would be living in a perfect world and that just ain't gonna happen! :) <.html

I thought about the last post that I sent in about this and I came up with
this.
Virdon, on seeing Galen captured
by Urko and his soldiers and Burke killed by the same Virdon flees into the area
what the ape civilization called the Wastelands(i.e the Mohave Desert) as the
gorillas does not even follows him into the region. To the gorillas and Urko,
Virdon is dead. Thirty years later, two chimpanzee archeologists (male and
female assistant) upon rumors of an ancient civilization deep in the Wastelands
go to investigate that are these rumors are true or not.
After a ten day trek
across the Wastelands, the two stumbled across the remains of a military base
which was once called Area 51. Upon exploring the ruins of the base they see a
perfectly preserved spaceship(the same ship that crashed landed on Earth during
Escape) and run into Virdon who was for the past twelve years was hiding at the
ruins and was also repairing the ship so he could get back to his family. One of
the apes(the male) recognized him because about thirty years before, the trio
went through his town when he was a child. As the male chimpanzee tells Virdon
that Galen upon his capture by Urko and his gorillas was imprision for twenty
years for treason but was pardoned by Zaius upon he renounced Burke and Virdon.
While the male archeologist and Virdon discussed the past thirty years the
female assistant was exploring the remains of top secret base finds the room
which has several cylinder chambers in them (five cylinders are in the room), as
she goes to one of the cylinders, she rubs of the frost off of one of them which
to her has strange feel to her looks into the cylinder and then lets out a
scream. Virdon and the male chimpanzee runs towards the room. When they
get to the room, the female assistant is on the floor pointing to one of the
cylinder,as Virdon and the male chimpanzee moves towards the cylinder they peer
into the cylinder and see a human male preserved in one the cylinder. Virdon who
thinks that there could be more checks the rest of the cylinders. As he
does he finds a female in the other, as Virdon looks in the other,
the two chimpanzees examines the panel and accidentally hits a
button which now starts to thaw two of the five cylinders, unbeknown to the
trio. As Virdon looks in the third cylinder and calls over the two
chimpanzee archeologists. Inside the cylinder is a chimpanzee, a male
chimpanzee. As the three looks into the cylinder, the first cylinder opens up
and the male who was in the cylinder falls to the floor, unconscious but alive.
This is what I thought about last night and this today and I am not finished
with this. Please give me your comments and thoughts about this.
Kevin
P.S. I am still working on this. <.html <.html

It figures that after the big reveal of strip 36 we switch locales again and return to Ursus, Zaius and Milo (or whoever that is if it's not Milo but until he actually gets named I'm calling him Milo).
I'm still not entirely clear on who's allied with who here. Zaius and Ursus seem to have learned about Garvon's discovery through different means. This strip would seem to indicate that Milo was reporting
back to Zaius, but perhaps he was playing both Ursus and Zaius against each other? Or maybe it was Marcus who was getting his info from Milo and he's the one leaking to both Zaius and Ursus?
Maybe I'm overthinking this. Can we have more pretty pictures of the spaceships and mutants, please?

No, you are
not overthinking at all Greg.
Chimp X has
announced that he betrayed Garvon.
In my mind he
did this by reporting the spoils of the diggings (the ones Garvon insisted be
kept from Zaius for obvious reasons) to Zaius. I have tried not to be TOO
specific about ANYTHING.
Big ears
heard about Chimp X's information and Ursus found out/came to see what is going
on. I again explained generally, but the back story is that Usrus himself
came across an old human relic that detailed military ranks etc. I
intentionally avoided too much detail but Zaius (typically) destroyed the
book.
Ursus however
is obsessed with the military and why? POWER. Something he makes it
obvious to us all that he craves. Again I have not dwelled upon it but I
believe the power freak is really his wife and she lives out her quest through
the large brute. She has the intelligence to point him in the right
direction.
I did a LOT
of thinking before constructing these......and I have gone out of my way to use
certain twists to actually soften our suspension of disbelief later...when
somehow 3 chimps end up driving a spacecraft.....but gently does it!
;)

It ain't area

It always
occurred to me that Pete and Alan really should have had a look at the map in

useful...ie military bases, weapons warehouses, presidential bunkers (as in T3)

Marvel UK issue 28 is now available on Hunter's site. Once again we have an installment of the Apeslayer! saga. In addition there is an article showing the make-up application process. In this case, it shows
Roddy McDowall being made up as Galen for the episode Tomorrow's Tide.

Because
Virdon was focused too much on the spaceship and the only time he went exploring
the complex was to look for parts for the spaceship that he working on.
Virdon was hiding in a vast complex, and these complexes are part of
the government's top secret black ops projects and other highly secretive
experiments and in this case the complex that Virdon was hiding in was one of
the most largest and highly classified bases in what use to be the United
States. There might be floors and other top secret chambers that were off limits

The one he's thinking of is
"Genus Homo". The other one isn't much like POTA. Also cool is the
horsie section of "Gulliver's Travels". - - - Jeff

Re: [PotaDG] Apes-like Book
In the most recent issue of Simian
Scrolls, it mentions two "APES-like" books that pre-date Monkey
Planet... They are titled: Genus Homo by L. Sprague de Camp
& P. Schuyler Miller... Another is titled Across Time by
David Grinnell...

Does anyone know the name of the book that's about about
some scientists and they are in suspended animation and they crash on a
planet ruled by intelligent primates? It was written before Boulle's
Monkey Planet. I think its called "Homos..." something. Its driving
me nuts and I would appreciate some help!

"Land of the Lost" season 3 is in stores
already, I think a week early. Those who want to see 13 episodes of vintage
POTA-era Ron Harper running from dinosaurs, get going. - - - Jeff

As it was me who wrote the piece in Scrolls, I would have to say yes... it
was a while ago mind you. Genus Homo is the more PotA-like but Across Time
has enough to be of interest. The latter is a bit more sci-fi oriented, with
spaceships and aliens, etc. but worth a read - but if you're looking for
PotA comparisons Genus Homo will probably be the more satisfying. It
actually goes into the whole ape culture in a lot more depth than PotA (or
at least in terms of how each of the different kinds of ape evolved
differently).
