Yes, whittle kids loved "The Phantom
Menace". And people were suckered enough by a new "Star Wars" film to make it a
smash. That doesn't mean people were happy with it. The next one, "Clone Wars"
made half what "Menace" did because people felt ripped off by "Menace". Now
we'll see how the PG-13 "Revenge of the Sith" does. So far it's breaking
records. This might be the turn around for sci-fi movies, including if another
POTa is made. "War of the Worlds" (inspired as much by 9/11 as H.G. Wells'
novel) is another one that might do well while not pandering to kids. Fox tried
to do something "today's kids will like" in POTA2001 and it didn't work. Kids
like the hard stuff too, just as we liked POTA as kids. The thing is most of the
original POTAs and "Star Wars" hold up as adults, too. That can't be said of the
stuff that tries to be kid friendly ("Phantom Menace", POTA2001). Pander to kids
and it's the death knell. It's got to be adult-friendly as well. That's
something Lucas is learning almost too late. - - - Jeff

Good question
Neil.
I personally think
the TV show does not stand the test of time and it is probably a good thing it
stopped (just) before making a complete mockery of the
franchise.
I do like some of
Dave Ballards stories and others that are like another episode, but I
wouldnt waste my time on filming these or glorifying them in comic books
because they just appeal to probably 20 people (and you can find them all on
the Friends and Fugitives group, drooling over Petes bare
chest).
The only hope POTA
might have is taking the spirit of the franchise and transposing that into
something todays kids will like.
As someone said to me
yesterday, George Lucas may have irritated the die hard fans with Episode 1
and Episode 2, but he also gave birth to an entire new generation of Star Wars
fans, and got them to pay money to see it (and buy the
toys!).
The future of POTA is
to bury the past.
The fugitives need to
be superseded by something more X-Files, that is well written and depends
very little on SFX just a good story that is made more enjoyable by whatever
FX are used.

On a side note are
fans happy to have something like stories based on the
TV series follow the same boring chase / capture / escape etc.
formula that it had or would they be willing to
embrace a radical shift in the way those stories are
told?

POTA & Star Wars, well the first 2 anyway, are excellent
examples. You don't have to have an Alien gore feast to deal with Sci-fi
in an adult fashion. There's no need to Flash Gordon it up for the
kiddies. The Day the Earth Stood Still, one of my favorite early Sci-fi
flicks, is another good example, as is Forbidden Plane.

another POTa is made. "War of the Worlds" (inspired as much by 9/11
as H.G. Wells' novel) is another one that might do well while not pandering to
kids. Fox tried to do something "today's kids will like" in POTA2001
and it didn't work. Kids like the hard stuff too, just as we liked POTA as
kids. The thing is most of the original POTAs and "Star Wars" hold up
as adults, too. That can't be said of the stuff that tries to be kid friendly
("Phantom Menace", POTA2001). Pander to kids and it's the death
knell. It's got to be adult-friendly as well. That's something Lucas is
learning almost too late. - - - Jeff

What do fans (the whole 20 that are left) want?
Good
question Neil.
I
personally think the TV show does not stand the test of time and it is probably
a good thing it stopped (just) before making a complete mockery of the
franchise.
I do
like some of Dave Ballard’s stories and others that are like another
episode, but I wouldn’t waste my time on filming these or glorifying them
in comic books because they just appeal to probably 20 people (and you can find
them all on the Friends and Fugitives group, drooling over Pete’s bare
chest).
The only
hope POTA might have is taking the spirit of the franchise and transposing that
into something today’s kids will like.
As
someone said to me yesterday, George Lucas may have irritated the die hard fans
with Episode 1 and Episode 2, but he also gave birth to an entire new
generation of Star Wars fans, and got them to pay money to see it (and buy the
toys!).
The
future of POTA is to bury the past.
The
fugitives need to be superseded by something more “X-Files”, that
is well written and depends very little on SFX – just a good story that
is made more enjoyable by whatever FX are used.

The third in a series of Topps-style card sets for the sequel films is now on Hunter's site. This set celebrates Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Once again a big thanks to Neil Foster for the art
on the wrapper and the card backs. Thanks also to Kassidy Rae for her help with the text on the card backs.
As with the previous two sets for Beneath and Escape, there are low-res files that you can view and there are hi-res files that you can download and print using a photo-quality printer to make your own card set the
next time Craft Day rolls around.
Thanks,

Regarding the TV show I would have had the fugitives stop being on the run at some point. Being on the run constantly doesn't allow for other parts of the ape world to be explored(culture, politics, the arts etc.)

A series of multi-episode story arcs would have been preferable, and I'd have gotten them into the desert at some point. Every episode looked the same.
The show's BIG problem....
it was dull.

I'm not that crazy about this set. I don't understand the selection of photos. You don't use any of the wider shots that take in the entire plaza, city and ape management. Too many close and
medium shots -- and dark ones at that.

That's not entirely true... After all, in Serling's synopsis for the show, he had planned for them to run across various cultures in their journies... The things you mentioned could have easily been explored in
the TV series, had it chose to focus more on apes rather than astronauts... The TV series should have been more like the first movie in the sense that it should have been focused on the ape's world and the
astronauts predicament at having to survive in the simian culture... Being on the run had nothing to do with the lack of the ape's society being shown, it's due to the fact that it wanted to focus on the 2
humans... If Burke and Virdon had chosen to "stop running", then what would have came of it? It still wouldn't have shown any more of the ape's society... It would have focused on their living in some
human ghetto and it would have still focused on them, just settled into the human culture of the planet... <.html

You will need a radicl shift in the story if you don't want to suffer
the same fate as the TV series. New fans today, even the younger ones,
will not follow stories that generic. Its a whole new world now, even
in the relm of SciFi. <.html

I purposely stayed away from using a lot of shots from the riot scenes. I went with the assumption that Topps would have de-emphasized that part of the story because they were making a product for children. I used
the same reasoning on the Beneath set when I left out the parts where Brent was forced by the mutants to hurt Nova. A secondary consideration was that the riot scenes are very dark (having been shot at night) and
the wide shots lack detail as far as the apes are concerned. You just get a lot of red and green blobs, at least in the shots where you could see through the fire and smoke. In many of the shots where you could
actually see the apes, there was usually some of the extras in the bad pull-over masks, and I wanted to avoid showing those as much as possible.

The two fugitives wouldn't necessarily be stuck in a human ghetto, although that is a possible story line. I agree that the TVshow focused on the two fugitives instead of the apes. Being on the run, they would
encounter ape culture but not be able to explore it fully or understand it certainly because they would have to return to going on the run. With Urko chasing them, I don't think they could stay anywhere for very

Well, I
suppose we could start distributing Within again.
Let's start
with T this time and Greg P, then once they have commented they can nominate the
next recipient or tell me to choose.
Just to
refresh people's memories, we are now at the site of the diggings. Ursus
has dropped in and "executed" Garvon. And those pesky mutants have popped
up - this site is far from the mutants' region in BENEATH, but a tunnel connects
the Museum at the site to the main assembly area.
Hey, they
have preserved a nuclear warhead, so why wouldn't they look after a bunch of
space ships? :)
Anyway, two
strips ago (#37), Ursus turned his gun to Garvon's apprentice and asked him what
HIS account is of the findings (ie are they evidence of an advanced human
culture?). The mutants are there to enhance the irony and....well....cos I
like mutants!
In the
previous strip (#38) the gorilla guards who accompanied Zaius and Ursus have
discovered and opened a door.
However this
strip (#39) is a continuation of the thread in #37.
Patrick, are
you reading these?

With al the excitement over the museum I'd forgotten where we left poor Milo, facing the business end of Ursus' pistol.
Love the close-up on the gun in the second panel. I don't want to spoil anything, but it does look like there's more going on here with Ursus based on this panel. Perhaps his actions earlier in the story are
catching up with him?
Nicely done. Keep 'em coming.
I say send the strip to John next.

Obviously ESCAPE FROM THE POTA inspired, especially
the appraiser's statement "Not the best selling comic book, but a loyal and

This is the closest to anything POTA related I've
seen in the daily strips since 2001.

Yeah, that

Burke and Galen! They will be wishing some of the old TV Show writers had

Only 5 strips

It would have

The identity

According to this site: http://tvparty.com/70lance.html" -
"The budget for Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp was the highest ever (at
that time) for a Saturday series - over a million dollars for a
fourteen episode season. The chimps were trained by industry veteran
Frank Inn (Petticoat Junction, Benji).
The sets and props were fairly elaborate and many new lighting

Interesting little
article here about using worm holes for time travel:
In part it
says:
"Wormholes
entirely governed by the laws of quantum mechanics, on the other hand, would
likely transport their payloads to an undesired time and place.
Calculations by the Oregon researchers show a
wormhole that combines exotic matter with semi-classical space-time would be
fundamentally unstable.
This result relies in part on a previous paper in
which Hsu and Buniy argued that systems which violate a physical principle known
as the null energy condition become unstable.
"We aren't saying you can't build a wormhole.
But the ones you would like to build - the predictable ones where you can say Mr
Spock will land in New York at 2pm on this day - those look like they will fall
apart," Dr Hsu said. "
So you can't
predict where you end up, so look out, you could be sent far into the future and
arrive on a future Earth ruled by Apes!! ;-)

Thanks, guys. I'm honored.
I'm a bit behind in these, too. It's been a
really busy couple of months!!
As usual, the artwork is amazing. With the
gun and with the helmet leather going over his eye, I wonder if Ursus is showing
vulnerability and fear (Veronica Lake-like) or impending doom (Father
Time-like). I don't remember having seen that sort of a pose, and it is
striking in some way.
It sounds as if this is a pivotal point in the
story. A moment of truth. I'll have to read the missing pieces to
know what lead up to this point. It's is not only a cliff-hanger but a
real show of character. Zaius seems almost, well, concerned.
It feels as if we are reaching the end of the
story. Looks like I will need to catch
up.
I'm waiting to see what happens with the
ships!! Has Milo been identified? Was he Garvon's
assistant? Hello?
Comics are very picture/visual orientated, but
the story line is critical and makes the story. I'd like to mention that
this is an outstanding product from both of you gentlemen. You guys
are a great team. Keep up the good work! I'm proud of you
both.

Speaking of
being different - I think a new TV Show based story would be likely to ask
questions about sexuality.
This creeps
me out a bit, but I dare say if it were more accepted in 1969, sexuality would
have been on the agenda.
Would anyone
agree or disagree?

.htmlIt isn't necessary. It's only important that he's educated by her and
respects her.

That aspect of it is alright (a chimp as his foster mother or something)... It's just the gorilla marrying a chimp that is far fetched... Doing that is going in to Return to the POTA novel territory, where they have
a half chimp, half gorilla, which of course is impossible due to their being seperate species... <.html

Hey - what
about PLANET?
Isn't thaty a gorilla funeral and he has a chimp
wife?
Isn't
integration of the 3 ape species an interesting question, relevant to the racial
themes of the entire series?

Whitty,
In PLANET, that was just a screw-up and you know it... It's pretty safe to say they just went and used chimp appliances rather than going thru the trouble of creating female gorilla appliances for what would
basically be a background ape... Yes, they should have made an actress up properly for the funeral scene, but they didn't... It still doesn't mean that the apes species would intermarry, because it's
impossible for them to interbreed because they are all seperate species.
I am not against the idea of some young gorilla being orphaned and raised by a chimp foster parent, or the idea that a gorilla father would become widowed and have his son raised by a chimp nanny, etc. I am just saying
keep their species from inter-species marrying...<.html

.htmlBecause it's impossible for an inter-species marriage to produce
children, there's probably a strong taboo against it.

Fair enough -
but isn't that the essence of what POTA explores?
I do prefer your
"nanny" scenario anyway Anthony! :)
Michael
And hey - who
says they can't interbreed? I mean - really - thay can't TALK!
:)
Because it's impossible for an inter-species
marriage to produce children, there's probably a strong taboo against
it.

Yup - OK, but
it would be interesting to explore, or just discuss on the group, what people
think about this!
