.htmlSweet is right. Neil's rendition of the Mutants to their 'real' movie
counterparts is downright uncanny! I wonder if we'll see "Fatman"
Victor Buono, before the end. I've always wished that he had more of a
roll in Beneath than he did. I must admit that there was a point early
on where I did not think much of his acting abilities (mostly because
of the corny King-Tut Batman villain role), but the more I see him in
old supporting roles in movies and TV, the more I got to respect him.
Much the same can be said for the rest of the Mutant council. Their
scenes should have been expanded by a few minutes to flesh out their
characters. And, lets face it, if there ever were any characters that
needed fleshing out, those mutants would fit the bill! :)

Thank you my friend. I don't care if you are obsessed with butts, your O.K. in my book.
Anatomy aside, the comic continues to make me curious as to what is going to happen next. The mutants are cold and calculating and appear to be well prepared to deal with any adversary. As I
was reading this, a mutant thought popped into my head. What if the mutants were mutant apes? Would the apes living above ground battle them or would an agreement be reached. What if the mutants were a group
of mutant apes and humans living together who wanted to take over the world. My imagination gone wild. Elaine

This is some strange museum the mutants are running. They let people just crawl all over the spaceships. Hey! Those things are 2,000 years old. Watch it with the fingerprints, will ya!
Try going to the Air and Space Museum and see if they let you crawl all over the exhibits there.
The mutant's museum seems like a much more fun place to go on a field trip if they'll let you crawl all over the ships. Do mutant children even go on field trips, I wonder? If your
teacher can just project images from any location anywhere against the wall and create realistic illusions, do you still really need to leave the classroom?

Very cool. The detail Neil puts into these strips is just uncanny. Fantastic likenesses of the mutants, too.
Now where's Marcus during all this? Is he one of the gorillas who broke into the museum? I hope he doesn't fall prey to the mutants and their dastardly ways. That would be tragic.
The Museum of Science here is Boston lets kids crawl all over a variety of stuff, so the mutants are not too unusual with the spaceship being available to the public. Elaine

Though I guess the illusion are 3-D and interactive. Must be

Yeah, I heard about this. This is incredible
news, and they are produced by David Prior, who does Fox's A-list DVDs,
including POTA2001 (which I thought had incredible DVD extras). In my opinion,
David Cronenberg's "The Fly" is one of the best sci-fi movies ever. Doesn't look
like Fox will ever make a sci-fi movie that meaningful again. - - -

At the request of Kass, and also of my own volition, I'm gonna send a
bag of goodies to Ballard this week to scan and post for all you chaps
to enjoy.
Seeing as you are all the biggest experts in the world, you may have
seen alot of this, but hopefully there will be some new stuff to
entertain one and all... ;)

1. Original 8x10s from POTA 68 and the tv show (obscure pics!!)
2. Mint copy of 1970 BENEATH Gold Key Comic Adaptation
(I may be wrong, but I don't think even Hunter has scanned this..)
3. Production contact sheet from POTA 1968 -- includes Heston being
sprayed and McDowall/Hunter doing publicity shoot.
4. Beautiful colour portrait of McDowall as Caesar.
5. Japanese CONQUEST movie flyer.
6. Production contact sheet tv series - Mark Lenard as Urko.
If you want to see them, I also have the 1974 UK tv show poster
magazine (I'm sure Kass has posted this?), Pressbooks from all the
movies and alot of foreign cinema posters for the five feature films.
I have some obscure Spanish posters and large format French posters
from the feature films -- the U.S one sheets and the British Quads.
Unfortunately my British quad poster from POTA68 was "tainted" when a
director friend of mine got Heston to sign it for me.
If you want to see any of these extras -- let me know. I'm bowing
down before the great Mr. Ballard right now as I don't own a scanner!

I
have followed up some of the leads Dario gave me regarding a potential new comic
book series from Canada.
I
have some VERY elaborate details about this venture, but I am sworn to secrecy
so I cannot say much.
I
can confirm what Dario said about a series being planned (I know for a fact
many pages are completed). These are going to be in full
colour too. We're talking CLASSIC POTA - movie
environment.
As
Dario mentioned, these are all CANADIAN based comic people. I have seen
the names and they are all respected, established comic artists and
writers. The head honcho is a fan:
"In the long
run, I'm possibly one of the biggest APES fans around. I'll do good by our
hairy friends, I promise"
He complimented Neil on his art (particularly BEWARE THE BEAST)
too.If the first series of 6 comics sells well, they
have mentioned the possibility of looking for other
material.
I will release details as I am permitted to but I don't want to
do anything to test this relationship.
I will release what I can, when I can. Please don't email
me privately to prod me because I CANNOT say
more.
I have also mentioned Simian Scrolls to the head honcho and asked
if he will be available to interview when the time is
right.
COMMENTS?

I think most people would agree that Fox is
not handling "Planet of the Apes" very well. They pretty much sank the franchise
with their reimagination. But, like the plant the astronauts find in the
original, new things keep peeping through; action figures, trading cards, a new
comic book series. How could Fox mismanage such an evergreen
property?
But we know the best way to jumpstart it is
with a feature film, a good one. What are the odds of that happening, given that
POTA is basically stuck with Fox? Through no effort of those currently heading
the studio, Fox owns POTA. It can't be made elsewhere.
Anyway, here's an article at the famous
movie website aintitcool.com with an educated guess at who is mucking things up
at Fox. The article is basically about "X-Men 3", Fox's big flick for 2006, but
the first part talks about Fox's track record and how they are alienating
directors, such as the director of last year's "I, Robot". POTA2001 isn't
mentioned but the message is clear. Maybe we'd be better off if POTA time warps
another 30 years. http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20443

Interesting
that the comic is going to be classic....NOT Burton.

It's funny too, because Tom Rothman hasn't done shit!
And even that is being generous. He was Jim Jarmusch's
producer for Down By Law. Other than a doco interview
and a guest spot on a failed TV series, that's it!
How he got #7 in Premiere's 2003 annual Power 100 List
is beyond me. He must have kissed the right ass,
because judging from his IMDB credits he's nobody.
Now I know why Fox sucks so bad. It has guys like
him in charge. What were they thinking? Or were they?

*** Rory, you're of the opinion that Taylor and Nova rode their horse
HUNDREDS OF MILES down the beach when they left Zaius and the Cave
before they found the Statue of Liberty. You seem to think that DAYS
passed during that short bit of screen time. Yet there's no
indication whatsoever that that journey lasted so long that there was
a NIGHT following that sunny day. A simple series of transition-shots
showing a sunset... another day... a night... these all could've been
done -- JUST AS THEY WERE IN THE EARLIER SCENE, the trek from Dead
Lake to the Waterfall.
The Statue of Liberty is within an afternoon horse's ride down the
coastline from Cornelius' cave. You insist that they're hundreds of
miles away from it because you insist that Dead Lake is Chesapeake
Bay.
I disagree. Cornelius would've found TONS of artifactual remnants of
human cities between locales that far away from New York City (where
the Statue undoubtedly is). There is no "hundreds of miles" involved
here. At the rate of travel they make with a horse-drawn wagon, it
takes them only a couple days at most to get from Ape City to "the
diggings" -- and they aren't at a full gallop during that trip. At
the rate they were travelling, it would've taken them a helluva lot
longer to reach that site from Ape City. I don't buy into your
interpretation of the Map and the size of land it covers -- and I
don't agree with James regarding the directions on it, either (I seem
to recall that we agree that the "right" side is North -- that's what
you argued for years ago at the old Yahoo group).
"When did Taylor and Nova have the time to go back to the waterfall
at the rock pool, not taking into account that it's in the opposite
direction from where they were heading at the end of PLANET, and
hundreds of miles away?" you ask.
They had all the time in between the moment when Taylor finds the
Statue (when Zira and Cornelius were ENGAGED to be married) and
LATER, when Zira had become Cornelius' "lawfully wedded wife" (as she
tells the Commission in "ESCAPE"). Taylor and Nova didn't have to
travel hundreds of miles, and we don't know the route they took to
get from the Statue to that part of the Forbidden Zone near enough to
Brent's landing site -- a site which HAD to be close enough to Ape
City for him and Nova to ride that horse there (and who knows how
long THAT trip took?).
Taylor and Nova had been heading further up the coast, following the
shoreline. When they found the Statue, perhaps they went past it a
bit... perhaps they found an area where they couldn't go along the
shoreline anymore, due to the rocks blocking the way. The end-shot
of "PLANET" actually looks like such a spot -- making it, perhaps,
a "dead end" literally and symbolically. But supposing that they
weren't able to go much further along the shoreline: where would they
go then?
We don't know what lies further along the shore, since Cornelius
obviously hadn't mapped it -- his Map doesn't include any "X"-marks-
the-spot showing the Statue, and I don't think it's likely that he
would've actually SEEN the Statue and NOT marked it on his Map. I
don't think Cornelius knew the Statue existed -- he hadn't travelled
far enough down the shoreline to see it. Otherwise, the artifacts in
the Cave wouldn't be as stunning a discovery (in his opinion) as that
of the huge HUMAN-shaped image of the Statue.
We don't know what lies further off to the "right" of Cornelius' map.
Taylor and Nova, evidently, went a certain distance further along the
shore, "rightward"/Northward, and then had no choice but to double-
back when they didn't find Zaius' hypothetical "jungle beyond the
Forbidden Zone" and needed food and water for themselves and their
horse.
They were able to make better time on a horse than he and his fellow
astronauts were able to make on foot, so crossing the same stretch of
desert (and more) that he had already crossed with only THREE days'
worth of food and water would've been easier. I could see them
swinging around for no other reason than that Dead Lake has WATER in
it. Even if there's no food, at least they could have something to
drink. And, as long as they're back at the lake, it's only so far --
Taylor knows -- to the Waterfall area.
It ain't a "fact" that Taylor would've had to gallop hundreds of
miles to get back to the Waterfall -- it's only your/Rory's
interpretation of the Map, and it's a bogus one, as far as I'm
concerned.
You just don't like my latest postings at my POTA Phenomenon site
regarding the Circular Timeline, Rory... that's why you're being Mr.
Disagreeable about my Dog-Tags Theory. Admit it!

and Nova had been heading further up the coast, following the shoreline.
When they found the Statue, perhaps they went past it a bit... perhaps
they found an area where they couldn't go along the shoreline anymore, due
to the rocks blocking the way. The end-shot of "PLANET" actually looks
like such a spot -- making it, perhaps, a "dead end" literally and
symbolically. But supposing that they weren't able to go much further
along the shoreline: where would they go then?
We don't know what
lies further along the shore, since Cornelius obviously hadn't mapped it
-- his Map doesn't include any "X"-marks- the-spot showing the Statue, and
I don't think it's likely that he would've actually SEEN the Statue and
NOT marked it on his Map. I don't think Cornelius knew the Statue existed
-- he hadn't travelled far enough down the shoreline to see it. Otherwise,
the artifacts in the Cave wouldn't be as stunning a discovery (in his
opinion) as that of the huge HUMAN-shaped image of the Statue.
We
don't know what lies further off to the "right" of Cornelius' map. Taylor
and Nova, evidently, went a certain distance further along the shore,
"rightward"/Northward, and then had no choice but to double- back when they
didn't find Zaius' hypothetical "jungle beyond the Forbidden Zone" and
needed food and water for themselves and their horse.
They were
able to make better time on a horse than he and his fellow astronauts were
able to make on foot, so crossing the same stretch of desert (and more)
that he had already crossed with only THREE days' worth of food and water
would've been easier. I could see them swinging around for no other reason
than that Dead Lake has WATER in it. Even if there's no food, at least
they could have something to drink. And, as long as they're back at the
lake, it's only so far -- Taylor knows -- to the Waterfall area.
It
ain't a "fact" that Taylor would've had to gallop hundreds of miles to get
back to the Waterfall -- it's only your/Rory's interpretation of the Map,
and it's a bogus one, as far as I'm concerned.
You just don't like
my latest postings at my POTA Phenomenon site regarding the Circular
Timeline, Rory... that's why you're being Mr. Disagreeable about my
Dog-Tags Theory. Admit it!

We're
about to get really tough on membership again people.
Recently
I have had someone I never met tell me about a new POTA comic strip.
Imagine my surprise when I received a copy of a WITHIN strip that was credited
to persons other than myself and Neil!
This
can't go on.
The strip
MUST have been "stolen" from the group and then sent around by thieves claiming
to have drawn and authored them.
I am
doing another very serious culling.
If you
get booted accidentally, email me and I'll rejoin you.
But I am
actually going to demand that certain individuals post from their home
computers so we don't get another "POTA Terrorist" (long story, but in a
nutshell someone stealing people's identities). I need a way to check IP
Addresses.
What I
would like is a small group of 40 - 50 real people as opposed to a large group
of fake email addresses and pseudonyms.

I even had the decency to ask permission from
John, here on this group, if I
could alter his image.
(Post

, which involved a lot of hard work, was only made available
(in the files section) to the members of the
PotaDG on the 20th of December 2004. Somehow since then it seems to have made
it's way to this other site without my permission being sought. When I asked
politely that it be removed the owner replied that "FOX is the true owners of
everything POTA and thus nothing created by a fan from their copyright can
truely be owned by that fan" and of course
refused my request, so what can you
do?

I know
Valerie hates seeing her fan fics on people's sites when her permission has not
been sought.
It
is often down to moral courtesy, but some people are more interested in the
legality I guess which is hugely debatable.

Thanks for those pics Rory.
I too imagined it to still be some more remote beach, so seeing all
that development right at the top of the cliffs was a surprise.
From the looks of it, Taylor and Nova treked along the beach on the
right side and the statue was mounted on the leftmost side of that
beach. Can anyone confirm? (As remote as the chance may be, I would
like to know should I ever do make it there one day.)
I wonder of the nearby residents know it has such a significant film

I'm glad that you managed to get them to look at Neil's work. Whoever
will be drawing these (aside from Fowler) will inevitably be compared
to the former POTA artists we all love some much, including Neil. So
they've got their work cut out. If things progress on that front, I
hope that Neil gets a crack at them too. I knew that this was all being
put together by fellow Canadians, but I
kind of assumed that the art would also include non-canucks. I hope
this is not an intended exclusive selection.
When I spoke with Fowler he had plenty of samples of his own art. We
both looked together through the pile to see if there were any apes. We
found one that had an apelike creature (not POTA of course, just
regular ape), but it was too hard for me to imagine how good he would
be with Classic apes.
PS: What happened to the handfull of other Canucks that used to be

I can confirm what Dario said about a series

As Dario mentioned, these are all CANADIAN based

established comic artists and writers. The head honcho is a fan:
"In
the long run, I'm possibly one of the biggest APES fans around. I'll

He complimented Neil on his art (particularly BEWARE

well, they have mentioned the possibility of looking for other material.
I will release details as I am permitted
to but I don't want to do anything to test this relationship.
I will release what I can, when I can.
Please don't email me privately to prod me because I CANNOT say more.
I have also mentioned Simian Scrolls to

The Statue of Liberty in the final shot is a matte painting -- which also includes some of the cliff and rocks on the left and the blue sky in the upper right! It's all a painting.
The final scene was shot at the end of Zuma Beach, and the cove where the cave set was is actually right around the other side. It's also the same spot where the beginning of ESCAPE was shot and can currently
be seen in an Old Navy commercial featuring some hot young chicks dancing around in bikinis.
The shots of Taylor and Nova riding along the beach where shot just around the point to the south.

Menluth was a
DG moderator.
When James
left, I begged Neil to help me make the DG look good and to achieve this I gave
Neil owner status - you simply can't play with the settings unless you are an
owner.
Glen Schitz
(who was a moderator) and Menluth had a hissy fit and DEMANDED that I
immediately remove Neil. I explained to them that I trust Neil and needed
him to make the site look good, but it turned quickly into a political
squabble.
Menluth and
Glen attempted a coup. They tried to vote to remove
Neil.
That's when I
really got the shits.
This was
always my fucking group.
I asked James
to create it because he knew how to - it was that simple. When he created
it, the ownership was not really mentioned much because it didn't matter to me -
I am extermely trusting of people. Then James started going "Nero" and I
was in a bit of a fix.
So I
essentially said to Glen and Menluth "Fuck you guys, this is NY group and you
got your status from James, not from me."
Helen agreed
and that was two owners (me and Helen) outvoting a (psuedo) owner and a (psuedo)
moderator. So I changed Glen and Menluth back to
members.
That didn't
sit well with their egos and they went to join James in his mission to destroy
POTA fandom. Actually, in all fairness, his mission is to establish
himself as a credible spokesperson for POTA. I guess he wants people to
believe he is an authority........like ANY of us really is!!! But the
outcome is that fandom is fucked - well and truly fucked to the point that
absolutely nobody gives a rat's ass about POTA. The outcome is we have
made the groups an annoying political game instead of something fun and this has
personified many of the morals to the POTA stories in a very ironic
manner.
So that's
what happened to Menluth. And I, of course, am the bad guy - just ask
them.
Michael

Yeah I know -
and me, and Patrick, and Jeff.....an on and on.
The thing is,
most of us really DON'T know.
POTA is such
a neglected thing.
It was my
hope that if enough of us maintained interest and drew others (Greene, the Jim
Morrison impersonator, some of the stars, people who were there when the Power
Records were produced, etc...) to the core, we could find out more
etc.
Whatever you
say about Patrick, at least he doesn't have a tantrum and seek
revenge!
I get a lot
out of Patrick's scenarios. I wouldn't get into that much detail because I
believe the devil is IN the detail.
But Patrick's
scenarios are as important as Cougar's and Rory's and everyone
else's.
Discussing
how people get to these conclusions is just as fascinating as the conclusions
themselves.

If Rupert Murdoch is all about $$$$$s, it's
funny they haven't had a breakout franchise like "Spiderman" or "Lord of the
rings". If they were smart they'd nurture POTA, which is all theirs, instead of
riding on Marvel comics' coattails or paying for properties like "Garfield" or
sending franchises down in flames like "Alien vs. Predator" or alienating
licensees with action figures that sit on shelves. Anyway, the people at the top
make money. - - - Jeff

The Statue of Liberty in

and rocks on the left and the blue sky in the upper right! It's all a
painting.
The final scene was shot at the end of Zuma Beach, and the
cove where the cave set was is actually right around the other side.
It's also the same spot where the beginning of ESCAPE was shot and can
currently be seen in an Old Navy commercial featuring some hot young chicks
dancing around in bikinis.
The shots of Taylor and Nova riding along
the beach where shot just around the point to the south.

I didn't say
he had any brains Jeff, I said he is all about $$$$$ and that means he takes no
risks, and based decisions on a formula.
His formula
is flawed, but to make it right he would need to include an element of risk -
and I have not seen anything risky from Fox for a long time (unless they are
throwing a bone to a director as with TITANIC).
It's all
about GUARANTEED return - eg name director, name stars....whoops - there goes
the budget, get a bullshit script (it won't matter anyway), hype it up, break
records for the opening two days, then count the $$$$$s.
It's a
con.

I was under the impression that while it is true that the absolute
final shot was a matte, the preceeding shot from above the crown was
created with a scaffold mounted partial model of the statue crown (in a
delapidated state of course). I think that it was in "Legend of the
POTA" (Pendrei) that this was explained.

Sorry, didn't know.
Forget , I brought it up.
As for the exclusive Canadian content on the new comics, while I am
glad they are coming (and even in a way happy that this is a Canadian
initiative) I'm not crazy about the exclusivity aspect. I hope that
it's only a temporary situation.
Dario

Menluth was a DG moderator.
When James left, I begged Neil to help me
make the DG look good and to achieve this I gave Neil owner status -
you simply can't play with the settings unless you are an owner.
Glen Schitz (who was a moderator) and
Menluth had a hissy fit and DEMANDED that I immediately remove Neil. I
explained to them that I trust Neil and needed him to make the site
look good, but it turned quickly into a political squabble.
Menluth and Glen attempted a coup. They
tried to vote to remove Neil.
That's when I really got the shits.
This was always my fucking group.
I asked James to create it because he knew
how to - it was that simple. When he created it, the ownership was not
really mentioned much because it didn't matter to me - I am extermely
trusting of people. Then James started going "Nero" and I was in a bit
of a fix.
So I essentially said to Glen and Menluth
"Fuck you guys, this is NY group and you got your status from James,
not from me."
Helen agreed and that was two owners (me
and Helen) outvoting a (psuedo) owner and a (psuedo) moderator. So I
changed Glen and Menluth back to members.
That didn't sit well with their egos and
they went to join James in his mission to destroy POTA fandom.
Actually, in all fairness, his mission is to establish himself as a
credible spokesperson for POTA. I guess he wants people to believe he
is an authority........like ANY of us really is!!! But the outcome is
that fandom is fucked - well and truly fucked to the point that
absolutely nobody gives a rat's ass about POTA. The outcome is we have
made the groups an annoying political game instead of something fun and
this has personified many of the morals to the POTA stories in a very
ironic manner.
So that's what happened to Menluth. And I,
of course, am the bad guy - just ask them.
Michael
PS: What happened to the handfull of other Canucks that used to be
around here. Menluth used to be a pretty regular poster, but now that I
think of it, he's been silent for a long time. Hell, with a hockey
strike going on, they should all be clamoring here.

Yes, and we can refer to
an interview with Dehn to conclude that it is
supposed to be a circular timeline, or we can think someone else jumped in and
said “there’s no way this ain’t gonna
be ambiguous”.
But it all adds up to making us what and
who we are as fans. All these views
(and lack thereof) and the reasons for this create the rich tapestry of being a
POTA fan.
As much as I disagree with what some say,
I am always fascinated to hear it.
