This coming from my favorite Star Trek nerd. :)

Star Trek pre-dates Star Wars.  I was "into" Star Trek before APES.  I'm just one of those that wasn't at all very impressed with Star Wars when it first came out (1977), and I've never understood what makes it so "wonderful."  Star Wars has always kind of bored me, with the only one I really enjoyed being THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.  However, what my reaction to the original would have been had it came out when I was eight years old, as was the case with PLANET in '68, I'll never know.

Giamatti: We should have been taking drugs.
Unfortunately we weren't on anything. It was fantastic
when my agent called and said , "Tim Burton wants to
meet you for "Planet of the Apes." The script that
actually came across my desk meandered. Bad script. If
you're going to remake that movie, let alone a good
science-fiction film, plot would seem to be of the
essence. Not that the first movie is Jonathon Swift,
but it has a good satirical point of view. This one?
Nothing. It just dribbled away. But it turned out to
be one of the best times I've ever had filming."

What does he mean "If you're going to remake that movie, let alone a good science-fiction film"?  Is Giamatti implying that PLANET is a bad SF film?  I don't think he meant to imply that, but it sure sounds like it.  I'm beginning to dislike this guy, "alot"!

At least he knows POTA2001 SUCKS!

.html.html Just read this comment on www.imdb.com.  Made me laugh,

best ending ever!, 31 May 2005

Author: acestanley2002 from United States

i think that this movie had the best shock moment at the end of the film than any other film in history. i saw this movie when i was about 9 years old and was fascinated with the thought of apes evolving on another planet and had heard nothing about the ending. when the camera pulls out at the end and shows the statue of liberty i about sh_t my pants. i was totally shocked and awed and i will always remember that moment. i think this movie holds up even today and was way better than tim burtons awful remake. i mean come on mark wahlberg versus charlton heston. heston wins this one easily. moses vs dirk diggler ha! for the times the makeup job on the apes was excellent and its too bad they had to make 4 more of these movies and ruin the franchise.

Beginning to?  He's the worst!
In addition to Heston's rant,
cut Giamatti's one liners.
It vastly improves the film.

I'll go one better than that; I still have my Mego Planet of the
Apes and they are dispalyed in an upstairs room of my house. I would
never say that I don't like the series; I love it. It just had some
flaws. But then again, what show doesn't.

I have a closet that displays my Planet of the Apes collection. I
have both my original MEGOs from childhood and new ones I bought from
Ebay in much better condition but without the memories. Me and my son
will spend hours going through that closet. It drives my Wife crazy.

Just read this comment on www.imdb.com.  Made me laugh,

best ending ever!
, 31 May 2005

i think that this movie had the best shock moment at the end of the film than any other film in history. i saw this movie when i was about 9 years old and was fascinated with the thought of apes evolving on another planet and had heard nothing about the ending. when the camera pulls out at the end and shows the statue of liberty i about sh_t my pants. i was totally shocked and awed and i will always remember that moment. i think this movie holds up even today and was way better than tim burtons awful remake. i mean come on mark wahlberg versus charlton heston. heston wins this one easily. moses vs dirk diggler ha! for the times the makeup job on the apes was excellent and its too bad they had to make 4 more of these movies and ruin the franchise.

Yes, "THE TRAP" is set in San Francisco specifically. The subway station has writing on the wall that reads "EXIT TO SUTTER ST" (cue  to 17:55 on the episode). There is a Sutter Street in San Francisco

-- W ell it looks like the station they were at would have to be Montgomery Street then. I got this from the BART web site:

Exiting the Montgomery St. Station

The BART trains at Montgomery Street Station are located three levels below the street.

Two separate elevators (referred to as Platform and Street) are needed to get from the train platform to the street.

The Street elevator will take you to the street. When you exit the Street elevator at the street you will be on the corner of Market Street and Sutter Street.

But as the BART platform is 3 levels below ground and there is clearly a BART train where they are trapped they stuffed up anyway! Maybe there is a Sutter Street in one of the other nearby cities?

I would have liked more of the stories to focus on the apes instead of humans. We saw some class distinction with the peasant apes. A story exploring the life of a gorilla soldier or female bounty hunter would ahve been interesting. Elaine

Not really -- the was always a G movie playing so parents could drop off the kids and go see the R flick.  I think it's more amazing it's playing at the same time.  Since it was a '67 film and considered a box-office flop.  Seems like it has pretty good legs to me.  I wonder how far apart the releases were.

You gotta remember, T, that movies used to play in theatres a lot longer in those days.  DOCTOR DOLITTLE opened in just a few theatres in November of '67, and it spread out to neighborhood theatres over the next several months.  It was a bomb, but only because it cost so much, just like other musicals of the time like CAMELOT, STAR!, PAINT YOUR WAGON and HELLO DOLLY!  The studios were crazy spending so much on those productions.  For instance, CAMELOT, released in late '67, made almost as much money in 1968 as PLANET did (around $15 Million), but PLANET was considered a blockbuster and CAMELOT a bomb.  Why?  Because PLANET cost less than $6 Million to make -- and CAMELOT cost $17 Million.  DOCTOR DOLITTLE cost $18 Million to make and only grossed $9 Million, which tells you that those theatres still showing it in July where pretty empty!

Anyway, PLANET opened in NYC on Feb. 8th, 1968, but it didn't open wide until April 3rd.  It was still in theatres around the NYC area until nearly the end of the year.  I was amazed to find, when I moved to Florida in late 1973 and looked up in the library microfilm of the local paper, that PLANET didn't open in South Florida until August 1968!

Warner Brothers was planning on doing it then, even though it was never "green lit."  Arthur P. Jacobs was the kind of producer that would publicize it even if it wasn't a done deal.

Has any one heard if Fox is going to give the rest of the films a
Special Edition release like they did for Palnet of the Apes?

    Hey Mike
From what I read it looks like our TV's are always tuned to the same
    channel.
I like the films that you mentioned as well. I am a especially a
Star Wars nut! But if I had to choose between Apes and Star Wars I
would have to pick the Apes.

Yeah - I think most of us here probably liked most of the sci-fi fantasy stuff.

Unlike Rory, I was mainly just so pleased to see POTA, or anything sci-fi/fantasy at the time do I was not too analytical.

    Yeah, I did Apes prosthetics.
But when Jaws came out I

It was made of wire mesh
and duct tape, and it was
8 feet long with an articulated

Jacobs found the book in 1963 (looking for a new "King Kong") and went to work immediately trying to get the movie set up. For the early history, the book "Legend of the POTA" by Pendreigh is best. - - - Jeff

I was just having a look through my collection of different releases of the book (which is now way out of hand!) and on the rear cover of the original Signet (US) paperback release (First printing - November 1964) it clearly states "Planet of the Apes will be filmed in 1965."

I didn't think it was given the nod this far back but I may be wrong. Does anyone know for sure?

    Neil

Warner Brothers was planning on doing it then, even though it was never "green lit."  Arthur P. Jacobs was the kind of producer that would publicize it even if it wasn't a done deal.

It got a pretty good review too . . .

    Editorial Reviews
    Amazon.com essential video
Many early science fiction films are now, quite inadvertently (and in most cases undeservedly), objects of camp attention: we laugh at the silly makeup, tin-can special effects, and the naive "high-tech" dialogue. Planet of the Apes is no such film. Its intelligent script, frightening costuming, and savagely effective conclusion (which needs no big-budget special effects to augment its impact) remain both potent and relevant. When Colonel George Taylor (the fabulous Charlton Heston) crash lands his spacecraft on what seems to be an unfamiliar planet, he is captured and held prisoner by a dominant race of hyperrational, articulate apes. However, the ape community is riven with internal dissention, centered in no small part on its policy toward humans, who, on this planet, are treated as mindless animals. Befriended and ultimately assisted by the more liberal simians, Taylor escapes--only to find a more terrifying obstacle confronting his return home. Heavy-handed object lessons abound--the ubiquity of generational warfare, the inflexibility of dogma, the cruelty of prejudice--and the didactic fingerprints of Rod Serling are very much in evidence here. But director Franklin Schaffner has a dark, pop-apocalyptic sci-fi vision all his own, and time has not dulled the monumental emotional impact of the film's climactic payoff shot. If you don't know what I'm talking about here, you owe it to yourself to check out this stone classic, and even if you do, see it with fresh eyes; and don't be surprised if you get the chills all over again... and again... and again. --Miles Bethany --This text refers to the
    VHS Tape edition.

Just wanted to say that I managed to find a copy of his 'diary' book a

quite disappointed in that there really wasn't to much there and
nothing beyond a few facts. I would have thought that there would be

you'll find it). Exactly WHERE along Sutter Street the building Burke
& Urko are trapped in, that's another matter altogether. But it is in
San Francisco. Evidently, the "exit to Sutter Street" is caved in,
otherwise Burke could've just waltzed out while Urko was still conked

The impression I got is that Giamatti considers "PLANET" (1968) to be a
satire, predominantly, rather than a mere sci-fi film. Hence, his
reference to Jonathan Swift. "PLANET" is both Satire and Sci-Fi, but
predominantly Satire. They could've told the same basic satirical story
in a magical Fantasy kind of story, where the Protagonist is magically
transported to a "land of talking apes" (our Future) by some wizard...
but the "science fiction" elements helped to set up the premise in such
a way as to be somewhat more believable. Relativistic "time dilation"
    at near-light velocities, etc etc.

I'll say this about Giamatti: he jumped at the chance to play an ape --
to endure all those hours of elaborate make-ups that drove some actors
bonkers (Sal Mineo, and the dude who played the Minister in "BENEATH",
Thomas Gomez). As an actor, he figured it would be a challenge to bring
the appliances to life, and all that. Reminds me of James Gregory's
attitude -- as opposed to that of Orson Welles -- regarding being made-
up to play Ursus (a role Orson turned down). I admire Giamatti for
being willing to do something that a vain actor wouldn't do (and here
I'm thinking of Wahlberg and his insistence on wearing more than a mere
loincloth, as Heston was reduced to: for his Dirk Diggler role he was
willing to do things -- and wear 'things' -- to make "BOOGIE NIGHTS" a
great picture... so why be a prima donna on the POTA2K production?).

I only wish Giamatti (and the other actors) would've refused to do the
film on the grounds that the script sucked ass. Maybe the idiots who
green-lighted it would've realized that they're right, and postponed
the shooting of it until they had a script worthy of being filmed.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
*** There's a "Sutter Street" in a town called STOCKTON, CA, a little
over 60 miles east of San Francisco, though I don't know if the BART
system extends that far from the "bay" in question.

There's a "Sutter Street" further north, in YUBA CITY, on the other
side of Sacramento, even further away from the Bay Area.

In a suburb of Sacramento, called FOLSOM, there's a Sutter Street,
too, but a website [http://www.myfolsom.com/sutter_street..html5d has
    this to say about it:

"Since the middle of the 19th Century, Sutter Street has always been
the 'heart' of Folsom. A 3-block strip of stores, restaurants, and
bars highlight a part of Folsom that has gone largely unchanged since
1851. While the tenants may have changed over the years, the look and
feel of old Folsom truly brings you back to the days of the Gold
    Rush."

The site has some pics that don't really resemble "THE TRAP" so much
as an episode of "THE WILD WILD WEST"!

There's a Sutter Street in FRESNO, too. But that's even farther away
    from the Bay Area.

There might be -- and probably are -- more "Sutter" streets in
California, all probably named after some dude named "Sutter" from
California history, I'd bet. It seems to be a popular name for
streets in California towns. But the BART subway station suggests to
me that they're in San Francisco. The BART website has a "Search
BART" search engine, and typing in "Sutter" leads to only 5 "hits",
all of which reference the Montgomery Street BART station vicinity,
and not some other "Sutton Street" elsewhere in the Bay Area.

I did a Google search and found the BART website. Here's the page
where you got your info (everything between the - - - - - lines):

Accessibility Information of Montgomery St. Station

    Entering the Montgomery St. Station

The BART trains at Montgomery Street Station are located three levels
below the street. The first level below ground is the concourse
level. The second level is the platform for boarding the MUNI trains.
The third level is the platform for boarding BART trains.

Two separate elevators (referred to as Street and Platform) are
needed to get from the street to the BART train platform.

The street access to the elevator is located on the corner of Market
    Street and Sutter Street.

From the street, the Street elevator will take you to the concourse
level where the station agent and paid area are located. The elevator
buttons are labeled "C" for Concourse and "S" for Street.

Once you arrive at the concourse level you will need to travel
approximately 100 feet to the Platform elevator.

The Platform elevator will take you down two levels: The first level
is to the MUNI platform and the second level is to the BART platform.
The Platform elevator buttons are labeled "C" for Concourse, "M" for
    MUNI, and "P" for platform.

When going between the Street elevator and Platform elevator there is
no danger of encountering train tracks.

When the elevator arrives at the platform you will be at the far end
of the platform. Go straight to reach the center of the train
boarding area. Daly City trains are to your right as you exit the
elevator, and East Bay trains are to your left.

    Exiting the Montgomery St. Station

The BART trains at Montgomery Street Station are located three levels
    below the street.

Two separate elevators (referred to as Platform and Street) are
needed to get from the train platform to the street.

When departing a Fremont – Richmond – Pittsburg/Bay Point bound train
the elevator will be towards the front of the train at the far end of
the platform. When departing a Daly City bound train the elevator
will be towards the rear of the train at the far end of the platform.

The Platform elevator will take you to the concourse level where the
station agent is located. The Platform elevator buttons are
labeled "C" for Concourse, "M" for MUNI, and "P" for platform.

When you arrive at the concourse level you will need to exit the
elevator and go right. From this point you must go approximately 100
    feet to the Street elevator.

The Street elevator will take you to the street. When you exit the
Street elevator at the street you will be on the corner of Market
    Street and Sutter Street.

I don't know, offhand, if any other BART stations have an "EXIT TO
SUTTER STREET", as does the Montgomery BART station. Checking the
nearest ones (the EMBARCADERO station and the POWELL Street station,
there doesn't seem to be any access to Sutter Street in their
directions. So... the Montgomery Street Station it is, unless there's
    a better candidate.

    *** I haven't seen "WONDERLAND" -- but I wonder if it would've been
made if not for the fact that "BOOGIE NIGHTS" was made, and was
critically acclaimed -- with Burt Reynolds being nominated for an
Oscar (which he should have won). Didn't Robin Williams get it,
instead, for "GOOD WILL HUNTING"? "WONDERLAND" didn't get the same
kind of raves that "BOOGIE NIGHTS" got, even though it was about a
real porn actor (John Holmes) rather than a fictitious one (Dirk
Diggler). I like the scene in "BN" where Reynolds and his editor are
going over the footage of their first film with Dirk, and gushing
about how they've made a 'real movie', as if it's a work of Art and
as if they're talented Film makers! Steve Martin's movie "BOWFINGER"
reminds me of that, too. People in Hollywood that dream of being
thought of as the equals of Hitchcock or Spielberg or Scorcese... but
they don't have the talent. Yet they plug away at it... making their
movies. The scene where Dirk and his co-star pal are trying to make
it as musicians, too... all that non-talent, and they're oblivious to
it. I laughed my ass off at that scene.

The acting in "THE LIBERATOR" was Oscar-worthy, compared to
the 'acting' of the porn actors in "BOOGIE NIGHTS" -- the footage of
the films, where they deliver their awful dialogue before jumping
right into the improbable sex -- it was so perfectly 'bad'! Then
again, nobody really went to porn films for their artistic worth, did
they? Oh, that was probably Roger Ebert's excuse for going...

    Patrick

    P.S. I know this isn't on-topic so far... so, here's a POTA
reference, sorta related to the "BOOGIE NIGHTS" topic at hand:
there's a porn flick I've never seen called "PLANET OF THE GAPES"...
and I suspect that my not having seen it isn't all that much of a
loss! Oddly enough, they didn't make "BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE
GAPES", "ESCAPE FROM...", etc. I think the sequels (if you can
call 'em that) were just numbered, like the "SUPERMAN" movies.

    Hmmm...

"eventus" [masculine noun, Nominative singular] = "consequence,
    issue, result; event, occurrence, experience"

"stultorum" [Genitive plural, masculine] = "of the fools" or "of the
    simpletons"

"magister" [masculine noun, Nominative singular] = "master, chief,
    head, director" also, "teacher"

By "Eventus Stultorum Magister", do you mean something like "As a
result, a Teacher of Fools"? "Eventus" doesn't really seem to fit,
since "Magister" is a noun, and can only take an adjective in the
same case, not another noun. I don't think your Latin parses all that
    well...

The character Dirk Diggler was based on John Holmes aka Johnny Wad,
though rather loosely.  What's funny about Boogie Nights is the directors
name is Paul Thomas Anderson.  And Paul Thomas was a contemporary
of Holmes, as well as a director.  But you need to see Wonderland.  It's a
much more realistic portrayal.  I used to think Kilmer couldn't act, but
As interesting as the film itself, are the documentaries on the bonus disc.
I haven't seen Planet of the Gapes either -- not my sort of movie.  But I
do have a copy of Playmate of the Apes.  It's almost in the "So bad it's
good" category.  But Wonderland isn't about porn.  It's a true murder
mystery told in the tradition of Rashomon with everyone's version of
the story played out.  Boogie Nights is lighthearted in comparison.

It's a classic Latin quote, or so I'm lead to believe in Tombstone.
I did the translation for the Latin duel between Doc Holiday and
Johnny Ringo on the IMDB.  Which wasn't easy, since I can't
speak Latin.  But I was surprised no one else had done it.
And the translations on the Tombstone site were less than
satisfactory.  But I wanted to know not only what they were
saying.  Just like I wanted to know what "I'm your Huckleberry"
means.  And all the other vernacular.  "Skin that smoke wagon!"
What a great line.  I watch that movie just for the colorful language.
But from the research I've done it literally means, Events are
the teachers of fools.  Meaning Fools must learn by experience.
You can check the memorable quotes section for my full translation.
It'd be nice to get a critique from some one who actually studied
the language.  I think I captured the gist of the exchange.

.html.html I just realized that Fox is currently shooting a remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE with Kurt Russell.  It's due out next May, so that's going to keep Fox very busy on the remastered Collector's Edition 2-disc DVD set of the original that had that guy Roddy McDowall in it.

They've got no time for APES right now.  2008, that's the ticket.

I already own swamp land here in New Orleans and I ain't making a
penny here either. Besides, I have to start saving my money for those
fancy comics you'll soon be selling for upwards of $3.99 at my local
comicbook stores. The newest chapter of Within does just what the
previous chapters have done... left me in a confused state wanting to
know what the hell will happen next. How can each panel end leaving us
with questions without ever feeling like a plot device has been solved
and a storyline tied-up? The art never falls short of what I've come
to expect and the story continues to draw me in, leaving me wanting
more. I hope you guys can make entire comic issues work this well. If
so, we may have the first succesful Planet of the Apes comic line in
years. Thanks for sending it to me and remember, "I knew you guys
    when..."

you two can continue this in a full comic issue format I believe we
may have the first successful Planet of the Apes comic series in years.
    Remember, "I knew you when..."

I'd love to talk more about the story but I'll wait till the other 15
diehards get to see these too.
