      William Windom was right!

      Hollywood Comes to Culver

In November of 1931, the Universal Pictures Corporation in Hollywood sent a scenario writer, George Greene, to Culver to initiate a motion picture about Culver cadets. He arrived at the Vandalia depot, settled onto the Palmer House Hotel (later the Maxinkuckee/Culver Inn), and began to prepare a script, "Son of the Legion." By November 21 cameramen and technicians were shooting background material. During the Christmas holiday, studio moguls determined Greene's story and direction were unsatisfactory and notified General Gignilliat that a new script was being written and filming would resume under a new director – but not until May!

The vanguard of filmmakers arrived at the depot on May 2 and 3, 1932. Not only had the script been re-written but the title had been changed to "Tom Brown of Culver." The new director was a relative unknown named William Wyler who, in time, would be recognized as one of Hollywood's most astute directors of great films like "Ben Hur," "Wuthering Heights," and "The Best years of Our Lives." He also put his directorial touch on the careers of Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Lawrence Olivier, and Barbra Streisand.

He and the filmmakers traveled from California by Pullman , accompanied by a 70-foot baggage car containing a fully stocked costume wardrobe, make-up studio, cameras, Klieg lights, spots, and reflectors. Wyler, with his actors including yet-to-be heartthrob Tyrone Power, Sidney Toler, years from playing detective Charlie Chan, string-beaned character actors Slim Summerville, and froggy-voiced Andy Devine, fresh from his role as Tuck McCall in the  "Spirit of Notre Dame," future Dragnet star Ben Alexander, and a rotund CMA graduate, Eugene Pallette '08, moved into the Palmer House Hotel. The lead character was played by a real-life "Tom Brown," (left) the son of a stage actor and a musical comedy star mother. The baggage car was shunted off the main line of the Vandalia to the Academy rail siding north of the Recreation Building and adjacent to the Open Air Barrack, where the film crew resided during the 10 days of filming.

For the cadets, "going Hollywood " became a bit of hell. Much of the background filming – parades, football games, dances and many of the outdoor footage – had been shot the previous November when the uniform of the day was the winter issue! Now it was spring and the cadets were forced to don the heavy woolen shirts, pants, overcoats, and capes to maintain continuity for the filming.

When Wyler called his final "cut," the corps heaved a sigh of relief. They donned their normal uniforms and waved good-bye to Hollywood as the cast and crew connected the baggage car and boarded their Pullman for Los Angeles .  Colonel Robert Rossow, the commandant, complemented the corps for its fine effort and rewarded them by canceling a Friday drill and two days of inspections!

Gignilliat, perhaps, skeptical of Universal's promise to portray Culver in a favorable light, put Rossow (left) on a westbound train with instructions to serve as Wyler's (right) technical director. The commandant was a remarkable raconteur and showman. He appeared on the set wearing boots and breeches; and displayed a chest covered with ribbons from his campaigns in the Philippines and on the battlefields of Flanders . While he cut quite a figure on the Universal lot, he did not forget his responsibilities and saw to them to Gignilliat's satisfaction.

am nearly finished reading the biography about serling.  its mostly about TZ, but i finally hit a few paragraphs about pota.

according to this book, serling wrote the first draft of the pota screenplay, but the producers didnt like it, so michael wilson re-did it. the book also credits wilson with the statue ending. (i had always thought it was serling).

the biography also indicates that he wrote an unsolicited sequel to pota (that was also rejected by the producers, who then asked boulle to write a sequel.) isnt there someone on this list that has both of these?

I've herd it credited to about five different people.  Everyone wants credit for that.  Serling actually had a Twilight Zone about some astronauts who think they made it to another planet but they're still on Earth.  Some say it originally came from a comic called Karmandi.  I actually have a copy of it around here somewhere.   I would have thought the links for the various scripts would be in the Links Section by now but I didn't see them in there.  Can we get those put in there?  This keeps coming up again and again.  And when I have time I wouldn't mind checking them out myself.

The Pendreigh book "Legend of the Planet of the Apes" is the best
reference book that tackles the subject of who came up with the Statue
of Liberty idea, but even with all the research evidence, there is no
final definitive answer. Too many people have claimed it and there
isn't enough proof to be 100% sure for any of them.

The "Kamandi" comic book series is often cited in some discussions,
but it could not have been the inspiration since it (issue #1
featuring the statue right on the cover) only came out in 1972.

Here is a link with a nice picture and some more info:
      http://www.comics.org/series.lasso?SeriesID=2028

It should be noted that the great Jack "King" Kirby himself created
that series and the early (Kirby) issues are quite good. Since it
also features a bunch of animal inspired talking species (eg
catpeople, dogpeople, etc), it was most probably inspired by POTA and
      not the other way around.

      Really?
I always thought it was a reprint of a comic from the 50's.

Class of '08.  So much for Hal Holbrook.

Did you know that Eugene "Friar Tuck" Palette was also a rapid right-winger, and was so convinced that this country was going to be attacked first with nuclear weapons by the USSR that he ended up living like a survivalist out on some remote ranch in Wyoming or someplace?

"Friar Nut-Case" was more like it.

It should be noted that the great Jack "King" Kirby himself created
that series and the early (Kirby) issues are quite good. Since it
also features a bunch of animal inspired talking species (eg
catpeople, dogpeople, etc), it was most probably inspired by POTA and
      not the other way around.

-- That would be totally correct, Kamandi came out way after POTA and
like you say would have been inspired in part by it.
Of course Kirby denied this but anyway I would have loved to have seen
a POTA comic or 2 drawn by the 'King' himself, I have most of the run
of the original Kamandi series and his apes were great.

The Pendreigh book "Legend of the Planet of the Apes" is the best

final definitive answer.  Too many people have claimed it and there
isn't enough proof to be 100% sure for any of them.

I agree about the Pendreigh book, but my feeling is that Serling came up with the ending.  The movie was originally going to be done at Warners and Serling did serveral drafts, all basically the same with only slight changes.

Movie Reviews: 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

Critics generally seem to agree that there are things to like and to dislike about the two new films opening today, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers . In the case of the former, most conclude that the bad outweighs the good. In the case of the latter, good prevails. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal is one of several critics who conclude that the opening charm of Charlie "gradually gives way to a peculiar state that I can only describe as engagement without enjoyment." Likewise Ann Hornaday in the Washington Post comments that "the film's strenuous efforts at becoming a camp classic eventually begin to wear thin." Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News predicts that the movie will "delight children, annoy fans of the 1971 version ... and perplex everyone else." A. O. Scott in the New York Times calls the newest adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, "wondrous and flawed." And Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times begins his review of the movie by remarking: "When it comes to confections, Tim Burton has confessed, his preference is 'dark, bitter chocolate.' Which is not exactly a surprise. The director's visionary, phantasmagorical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is equally dark and, if not exactly bitter, unapologetically, relentlessly strange. Burton's gifts ensure you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be happy with what you're seeing."

I have to say that I've been disappointed with the APES line and I think that if Sideshow had done just a slightly better job on the sculpts and clothes to be more accurate then they might have sold more.  Also, the economy isn't that great right now, so I think people in general are tighter with their money -- I know I am.  If these figures had come out just five years ago they'd have sold better.  And finally, I think that the APES cult of fans is as minor as it always has been.  APES is well-known and generally well-liked, but it's no STAR TREK or STAR WARS.  I know some of you may have a hard time with that, but it's unfortunately true.

I think that probably the only other character I'd buy, if Sideshow made it, is the President of the Assembly from PLANET.  However, considering what a mediocre job they did with the glyphs on the other figures, and the President has a lot of glyphs, I really can't get too excited about the prospect.

POTA does have a rep for having a lot of high price paying toy/memorabilia buying fans.

A lot of them grew up after Burton ’s movie though and lost interest.

I own an insane amount of Planet of the Apes merchandise but not one
Sideshow figure. When I was a kid up through a single guy, I would
buy most anything with a Planet of the Apes logo on it. Now that I
have a family I can't afford $30-$50 for action figures that I will
add to my collection of toys my son can't play with. That kind of
money buys some really cool original Apes stuff on ebay.

Their Muppet Show line looked great. They did Army of Darkness
figures the same size as the new Planet of the Apes line is suposed
to be. They looked good. Not great. But good.

Thanks for letting me know that there were indeed some apes in Kamandi.
Ironically about a month ago was the first chance I had to pick up
issues of Kamandi (only 2 of them) and it was a the same mini comic con
where I met Ken Fowler who told me about the Templton apes comics

I hope that someday I'll have a nice run of Kamandi myself, but I'm not
going to go out right now an try to get them. They can always be found
on Ebay.....for a price of course.

To me, Kirby will always be memorable for many of the old classics he
drew, most the Marvel one that really made him famous. It was such a
shame the way he had to part ways with Marvel towards the end. He was
one of a kind. Thankfully we can still all appreciate his work.

To bad Kamandi never made it to a TV cartoon series, that would have been incredible stuff. Somewhere in my comic collection I believe I still have plenty of Kamandi issues.

i recently read a few of the early issues that had a lot of apes action.
one issue even had an ape scientist who kept primitive humans in cages.

Ironically about a month ago was the first chance I had to pick up
issues of Kamandi (only 2 of them) and it was a the same mini comic con
where I met Ken Fowler who  told me about the Templton apes comics
      coming out.

However I’ll be emailing Sideshow just to keep the line going.

      Hello All

ALSO, he said if the Ape fans don't want to see the line end to flood
Sideshow with email and snail mail. He said that they ususally listen
to the customer but their didn't seem to be much of an interest since
not many of them are selling out. But he stated nevertheless they
(Sidshow) needs to hear from us if we want the line continued. So come
on guys, "Fight Like Apes!!!" to get more Apes from Sideshow!!
      John

Last I heard, Palisades' Apes will be out in 2006. I've seen their "Army

figures"; not Hasbro cheap). I wish McFarlane was doing them. But POTA

It's a known fact that "Kamandi" was a cash-in on POTA. Marvel had POTA so DC did "Kamandi". The first issue even had the destroyed Statue of Liberty on the cover.  - - - Jeff

i recently read a few of the early issues that had a lot of apes action.
one issue even had an ape scientist who kept primitive humans in cages.

Thanks for letting me know that there were indeed some apes in Kamandi.
Ironically about a month ago was the first chance I had to pick up
issues of Kamandi (only 2 of them) and it was a the same mini comic con
where I met Ken Fowler who  told me about the Templton apes comics
      coming out.
