Speaking of Boulle

one:
Why not

.htmlOK. I am starting to be a little scared by their story comments. The
ape revolution could be really great in comic form with potential for
some great classic comic action... but unless they are going to have
some kind of really well written flashbacks that affect the story I
am really weary of them including all of the primary classic
characters in this 6 issue "trial" run. Throwing everyone into the
story just to do it is not going to impress die-hard fans who want a
good story and it will not help attract new comic fans who are
discovery the apes saga for the first time. This could be another
nail in the coffin instead of the rebirth of the Planet of the Apes.
Why don't you guys release the next couple of panels of your work
to remind us how good a Planet of the Apes comic can be when created
by true fans who really know what they are doing. :)

If Neil
agrees I COULD send some PENCILS.....
OK. I am starting to be a little scared by
their story comments. The ape revolution could be really great in comic
form with potential for some great classic comic action... but unless they
are going to have some kind of really well written flashbacks that affect
the story I am really weary of them including all of the primary classic
characters in this 6 issue "trial" run. Throwing everyone into the
story just to do it is not going to impress die-hard fans who want a
good story and it will not help attract new comic fans who are
discovery the apes saga for the first time. This could be another nail
in the coffin instead of the rebirth of the Planet of the Apes.
Why don't you guys release the next couple of panels of your
work to remind us how good a Planet of the Apes comic can be when created
by true fans who really know what they are doing.
:)

The official title of the book in English is now, and has been for
decades, PLANET OF THE APES.
-- Actually it was still called Monkey Planet when it was rereleased
in Britain (and Australia) in 1974 to cash in on the popularity of the
TV show. As far as I am aware it wasnt retitled in England until it
was again rereleased in 1985.

I would have to agree with this... Throwing PLANET characters in with CONQUEST/BATTLE characters is bad news indeed.... I hear the hammer pounding the nails in the coffin right now...

Amazing stuff, Neil. Love the detailed image of Central City and that's a nice drawing of Zaius. What has me most concerned, though, is that panel with Galen. Between the razor and the fire it looks
like Galen's not going to be coming out of this story entirely unscarred.

I don't believe that's true. Typically for books that are movie tie-ins the publisher pays the studio. In the case of a book that already exists, the publisher pays the studio for the right to use key art
from the movie poster on the book's cover. In the case of a novelization, the publisher pays for both the rights to publish a book and to use key art on the cover. While the publisher normally hires the writer
(sometimes with studio approval), the resulting novelization is usually the property of the studio, and rights revert to the studio when the contract term is up. I've never heard of a studio paying a publisher to do
a movie tie-in, although I suppose it's possible that some really favorable deals have been done to get a film some extra marketing by getting a book out into stores with the movie art.
A separate situation is when the studio pays for the right to make the movie based on a novel. Those rights are typically bought from the author, although sometimes those rights are shared with the publisher
based on the author's contract with the publisher, so the studio has to negotiate with the publisher for movie rights. Sometimes those negotiations will include the use of key art from the eventual film on the book
cover, but if the negotiations are with the author and/or his agent directly, then that's not something they're going to be concerned with so it will be left for the publisher to negotiate (and pay for) those
rights later.
When the Burton film was released the U.S. publisher of the original novel was Random House, who released a mass-market edition under their Del Rey imprint. Their cover art was similar, but not a match to the art
for the new film. HarperCollins, a sister company to Fox under the NewsCorp umbrella, published a novelization of the new film. They probably would have preferred to publish the original novel with key art
from the new movie on the cover, but because they didn't have the rights to the original novel they had to go with a novelization. Why didn't Random House get the rights to do the movie tie-in using the original
novel and key art from the new film? Probably weren't willing to pay what Fox wanted, or Fox preferred to make the deal with their sister company, which included YA tie-ins.
I imagine an interested publisher could contact Fox to acquire the rights to publish a novelization of the original film, but there really isn't a market for such a book, so I don't see that happening.

.html.html .html
What does everyone think of this article? It's kind of POTA related to the real world.
Let's Have No More Monkey Trials
To teach faith as science is to undermine both
by Charles Krauthammer, Time Magazine
The half-century campaign to eradicate any vestige of religion from public life has run its course. The backlash from a nation fed up with the A.C.L.U. kicking crèches out of municipal Christmas displays
has created a new balance. State-supported universities may subsidize the activities of student religious groups. Monuments inscribed with the Ten Commandments are permitted on government grounds. The Federal Government
is engaged in a major antipoverty initiative that gives money to churches. Religion is back out of the closet.
But nothing could do more to undermine this most salutary restoration than the new and gratuitous attempts to invade science, and most particularly evolution, with religion. Have we learned nothing? In Kansas,
conservative school-board members are attempting to rewrite statewide standards for teaching evolution to make sure that creationism's modern stepchild, intelligent design, infiltrates the curriculum. Similar
anti-Darwinian mandates are already in place in Ohio and are being fought over in 20 states. And then, as if to second the evangelical push for this tarted-up version of creationism, out of the blue appears a
declaration from Christoph Cardinal Schönborn of Vienna, a man very close to the Pope, asserting that the supposed acceptance of evolution by John Paul II is mistaken. In fact, he says, the Roman Catholic Church
rejects "neo-Darwinism" with the declaration that an "unguided evolutionary process--one that falls outside the bounds of divine providence--simply cannot exist."
Cannot? On what scientific evidence? Evolution is one of the most powerful and elegant theories in all of human science and the bedrock of all modern biology. Schönborn's proclamation that it cannot exist
unguided--that it is driven by an intelligent designer pushing and pulling and planning and shaping the process along the way--is a perfectly legitimate statement of faith. If he and the Evangelicals just stopped there
and asked that intelligent design be included in a religion curriculum, I would support them. The scandal is to teach this as science--to pretend, as does Schönborn, that his statement of faith is a defense of science.
"The Catholic Church," he says, "will again defend human reason" against "scientific theories that try to explain away the appearance of design as the result of 'chance and
necessity,'" which "are not scientific at all." Well, if you believe that science is reason and that reason begins with recognizing the existence of an immanent providence, then this is science. But,
of course, it is not. This is faith disguised as science. Science begins not with first principles but with observation and experimentation.
In this slippery slide from "reason" to science, Schönborn is a direct descendant of the early 17th century Dutch clergyman and astronomer David Fabricius, who could not accept Johannes Kepler's discovery
of elliptical planetary orbits. Why? Because the circle is so pure and perfect that reason must reject anything less. "With your ellipse," Fabricius wrote Kepler, "you abolish the circularity and
uniformity of the motions, which appears to me increasingly absurd the more profoundly I think about it." No matter that, using Tycho Brahe's most exhaustive astronomical observations in history, Kepler had
empirically demonstrated that the planets orbit elliptically.
This conflict between faith and science had mercifully abated over the past four centuries as each grew to permit the other its own independent sphere. What we are witnessing now is a frontier violation by the forces of
religion. This new attack claims that because there are gaps in evolution, they therefore must be filled by a divine intelligent designer.
How many times do we have to rerun the Scopes "monkey trial"? There are gaps in science everywhere. Are we to fill them all with divinity? There were gaps in Newton's universe. They were ultimately filled
by Einstein's revisions. There are gaps in Einstein's universe, great chasms between it and quantum theory. Perhaps they are filled by God. Perhaps not. But it is certainly not science to merely declare it so.
To teach faith as science is to undermine the very idea of science, which is the acquisition of new knowledge through hypothesis, experimentation and evidence. To teach it as science is to encourage the supercilious
caricature of America as a nation in the thrall of religious authority. To teach it as science is to discredit the welcome recent advances in permitting the public expression of religion. Faith can and should be
proclaimed from every mountaintop and city square. But it has no place in science class. To impose it on the teaching of evolution is not just to invite ridicule but to earn it.

| Subject: Comics news : my thoughts |
|
.html My thoughts on the comic news Michael posted: I'm excited about it. It's
obviously set in the "classic" PotA universe and that's good enough for me.
I also think that the period between Conquest and Battle is ripe for
exploration, and I am really excited to see it being covered. In fact, I've
not been so looking forward to a PotA comic since I first saw the cover of
the Conquest tie-in issue that Adventure published.
HOWEVER... I'm a bit surprised to see that already we've had a couple of
posts being really negative towards the concept and talking about hammering
the nails into PotA's coffin, etc. - why? All that we know is that the
characters Ty mentioned are appearing in the story, but we know absolutely
nothing about the story or the context in which these characters appear
(e.g. flashbacks, narrations, whatever) so it seems a little presumptuous to
start sounding the death knell already. Let's have a little faith and wait
until we actually know more about the concept before we start ripping it
apart.
On the matter of the talent associated with the project, being a bit of a
comic geek I'm pretty happy with the talent assembled. For one thing, I have
always enjoyed Ty Templeton's work for DC.
Secondly, Darwyn Cooke is a fantastically talented writer/artist and while
Ty only mentioned cover illustration I'd love it if, sales willing, Cooke
was to get a crack at writing and drawing a complete story. His style would
upset a small minority of the PotA purists, but it would be very
interesting.
Other artists mentioned: Tom Grummett I've always liked, particularly back
when he used to do "Adventures of Superman" - he also did a "Superboy" story
a few years back which featured the recently discussed Kamandi character!
Denis Rodier I am familiar with but can't really remember anything about his
work; Richard Pace is a guy whose work I don't think I've seen; Tom Fowler
has done good work on "Green Arrow" recently, one of DC's better superhero
books at the moment; and Joe O'Brien I'm afraid I'm not familiar with.
Finally, Ty also mentioned Leonard Kirk - not only is he a good artist, but
for those of you who don't remember, he also has previous Apes experience,
having illustrated one of Adventure's better miniseries, "The Forbidden
Zone" (which was also the last one they published).
I am REALLY looking forward to this one! Could it disappoint? Definitely.
But on the other hand, it could also be the best Apes comic since the days
of Marvel. We just don't know, and I for one am going to give it a fair go.
I mean, at least it's not PotA2001, right?

The one thing I did notice though is they have got his shoes wrong
(or right if you like) Like I mentioned a couple of weeks ago on
this group, they had normal human shoes in Conquest with no room for
the toe / thumb thing (and like I said then, that is probably why
they were so angry!) ;-)
I know the 'human' shoes were wrong and probably due to the film's
budget but if a figure was being released that is authentic I would
have preferred if they had gone with the 'correct' shoes as well.

I took the Thade comment to be a joke on Ty's part. Still, if he needed an aggressive chimp character to oppose Caesar, I wouldn't mind him borrowing the name Thade, or doing the same for any other 2001
character. Just as long as they don't try to mix the actual characters.
As far as the inclusion of the other characters, I took the line about 'mostly set between Conquest and Battle' to mean there would be parts of the story set during and around the other films. How those
parts would link to the main story I have no idea. Perhaps a common object touched or seen by all the characters. Maybe there's just a thematic link (leaving a place you called home to start a new life elsewhere). I
didn't take it to mean that Zaius would travel to Caesar's time and together they would dig up Hasslein's corpse and re-animate him and Mendez has to team up with a hologram of Taylor built by ANSA to train
new astronauts so that they can defeat zombie-Hasslein. Because that would be silly. You'd want to wait until the 2nd mini-series to do that.
I'm with Alan. We should wait until we have more info, perhaps even the first issue, before we proclaim the new comic the 'final nail in the coffin'.

I took the Thade comment
to be a joke on Ty's part. Still, if he needed an aggressive chimp character to
oppose Caesar, I wouldn't mind him borrowing the name Thade, or doing the same
for any other 2001 character. Just as long as they don't try to mix the actual
characters.
As far as the inclusion
of the other characters, I took the line about 'mostly set between Conquest and
Battle' to mean there would be parts of the story set during and around the
other films. How those parts would link to the main story I have no idea.
Perhaps a common object touched or seen by all the characters. Maybe there's
just a thematic link (leaving a place you called home to start a new life
elsewhere). I didn't take it to mean that Zaius would travel to Caesar's time
and together they would dig up Hasslein's corpse and re-animate him and Mendez
has to team up with a hologram of Taylor built by ANSA to train new astronauts
so that they can defeat zombie-Hasslein. Because that would be silly. You'd
want to wait until the 2nd mini-series to do that.
I'm with Alan. We should
wait until we have more info, perhaps even the first issue, before we proclaim
the new comic the 'final nail in the coffin'.

IO don't see how they can
even count Thade!! I don't even consider
the Tim Burton film Planet of the Apes material. If they include some
of his work, I won't buy the comic

Sideshow Caesar looks ANYTHING like Caesar.
-- Well to me it looks okay. I think it does
capture his look except
the face does look a wee bit too narrow but it is
still better than
Brent!
The one thing I did notice though is they have got
his shoes wrong
(or right if you like) Like I mentioned a couple
of weeks ago on
this group, they had normal human shoes in
Conquest with no room for
the toe / thumb thing (and like I said then, that
is probably why
they were so angry!) ;-)
I know the 'human' shoes were wrong and probably
due to the film's
budget but if a figure was being released that is
authentic I would
have preferred if they had gone with the 'correct'
shoes as well.
