I think there is a small difference in the two versions. The Behind
special edition DVD is 127 min. long. I do remember them talking
about Paul Willams being a talented singer/song writer and showing
him without the ape make-up and I don't recall them talking about him
in the Planet Special Edition version. Its been a while so I may have
just missed that part.

I just checked and both versions run for 127 min. so there is no
difference in the actual documentary. One thing I had forgot about
was that the Sp. Ed. of Behind the Planet of the Apes had some really
cool animated menus. The opening options has the beach landscape and
a scrolling box shows scenes from all of the films. The rest of the
menus and cut aways are live action footage of the gorillas from
Apemania doing different mock hunts depending on the option you
choose.

The unedited interview with Roddy is just under 2 hours. The
interviewer is not miked so its hard to hear some of the questions
but Roddy can get wordy and long winded if he's not kept in check. He
rants about how he doesn't think he's ever even watched Beneath and
knows very little about the film... including the plot!

Other than the unedited McDowall interview, everything in the 2-disc BEHIND THE POTA DVD is on the 35th Anniversary edition. However, on the BEHIND DVD the outtakes and dailies have Goldsmith's score from
PLANET running over them. They are run with no audio on the 35th Anniversary Edition.
I like the 35th Anniversary edition better than the BEHIND DVD, and I never look at the latter anymore. I especially like that the 35th Ann. Edition has a teaser trailer for PLANET that I never saw before.

If you've done illustrations for "Monkey Planet" I'd love to see them
but I'm really not a big fan of the original novel (or the French :D)
so I'd rather not suffer through reading it again. Thank God for
Hollywoods total disregard for the stories they buy the rights to and

What do you think of this?
REVOLUTION ON THE PLANET OF THE APES:
Scripts
by: Ty Templeton, Joe O'Brien
Art
by: Max Douglas, Attila Adorjany, Bernie Mireault
For the last
twenty four hours, there have been rumours and unofficial reports that San Diego is in flames, that
the governor of California is dead, and that the
cause of all this chaos is a talking ape named Caesar. But when the
President of the United States announces that the
whole thing is a hoax, no one knows what to believe, until a Pentagon reporter
named Nora Rhodes decides to go to San Diego and find the truth
for herself.
Can Nora
survive in NewApeCity? Can Caesar
survive the gorilla rebellion? And can humanity survive a war that fate
tells us we cannot win?
MR COMICS
brings the ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES back in a six issue mini featuring
Caesar, Aldo, Dr. Zaius, Cornelius, the Lawgiver, Zira, Colonel Taylor, and
other characters from the classic film series.
Each comic
contains TWO simian packed stories, with scripts by Eisner-Award winning author
Ty Templeton (Spider-Man Human Torch, Simpsons, Batman Adventures) and Joe
O'Brien (Robocop: Prime Directives). Artists include acclaimed
illustrator Max Douglas (Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange) hot new penciller Tom
Fowler (Green Arrow, Star Wars), digital painter Attila Adorjany (Beowulf),
Eisner-nominated colourist Bernie Mireault, and others. With dramatic painted
covers by Denis Rodier.
GET YOUR
STINKING PAWS ON THIS COMIC, YOU DAMN DIRTY HUMANS!!

I think the part about two stories per issue gives you a good idea of how they plan to feature Zaius and the rest. The main story will probably be the post-Conquest story, serialized across the entire mini-series,
and the second story will probably be stand-alone stories featuring the other characters, set within or around the events of the other films. Just a guess, of course.

The description said that each issue will have 2 stories which leads
me to believe that one will be the post Conquest story the description
detailed and the other will be the POTA/BENEATH story with the
original cast (Zaius, Zira, Cornelius, Aldo and Taylor). I don't
think they are going to mix the two (cross fingers).
I actually thought that the description sounded quite interesting,
although trying to cover up Caesar's uprising night sounds
implausible. As I mentioned in the past, I've always thought that the
interim timeframe between Conquest and Battle has been mostly
overlooked up till now and should prove to be a fruitful setting for
interesting stories.
Can't tell you where we're at with the two comics Neil, because I
don't have access to them now. As to whether we should continue with
the current comics or revive the Novel and the accompanying artwork
you provided for the first few chapters, I'd have to vote with the
comics. I've read the novel a few times in the past and don't really
want to reread it yet again, at least not now, as I am way behind with
a lot of other reading material. Besides, we all (or most of us) know
the Boulle story, but we're all panting and out of breath to see where
the new Within and Going Home stories are taking us.

All three artists mentioned have their own websites, found easily through Google, with samples of their art and lists of projects they've worked on:
Max Douglas - http://www.salgoodsam.com/
- check out the July 19th entry of his blog where he mentiones a new project he's working on where he needed to do research on Century City.
Yeah – maybe the “big names” that were mentioned are just doing covers or something?

Not much of a photographer that seller, eh? But then again, that may
have been on purpose since it's really hard to see any detail at all.
From what little I can make out, it does not look to great a job. But
then again the idea of someone even trying to put together a
homebuilt 'life-size' ape is intriguing. It's better than not having
one at all I guess.
Not sure about that 'life size' claim either. Looks kinda on the short
side to me.
Pretty sure I could whip up something better for THAT price though!

I spent the day at the movies yesterday. Now that I'm
out of school, I wanted to catch up on movies that may
not be on the Big Screen much longer. My list for the
day was Tim Burton's version of Will Wanka, followed
by Rob Zombie's version of a 70's Slasher Flick, and
the new Batman movie.
Burton's Willy Wanka reminded me of Shakespeare!
One quote in particular -- you know the one --
"It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
signifying nothing."
This seems to characterize most Burton films,
all whiz-bang and no substance. And this one
was no exception. It's just as soulless as his
POTA remake only more so. And he seems
to want his main characters to all have big
overbites just like him. And Johnny Depp's
affectations of Michael Jackson are , shall
we say, far less than subtitle. But you do
get to see Deep Roy with far less make up.
Rob Zombie's Devils Rejects is bad, but at least
it's deliberately so. It's attempt to duplicate a 70's
Slasher Flick is amazingly accurate. In fact
right down to the bad camera work and the bad
acting. It was a gore-fest however, sometimes
more than expected, usually less, but with better
production values. They just don't make 'em like
that anymore. There is a reason for that. But at
least it didn't put me to sleep like his first movie

Batman was not only the best of the bunch,
it's the best of all the Batman movies as well.
I actually thought the first Batman was a pretty
good flick. But this one puts it to shame! It's
like if I saw Burton's Planet of the Apes first
I might have that it was pretty good too. But
then when compared to the original it just
doesn't stand up. Much like his Willy Wonka
pales in comparison to the original. Which
just goes to prove, much like the Rob Zombie
movie does, that better production values, do
not necessarily mean better story telling. But
this Batman has both! And it has Liam Neeson
as a Martial Arts Master with a funny name.
It's like Star Wars, where he played the drunken
Jedi Knight, "Gwazed On Gin". This time he's the
stoned Ninja, "Razz A Ghoul". And he not only
teaches Batman to kick ass. He also kicks
Batman's ass! And the new Batmobile, or
rather the OLD Batmobile kicks the other one's
ass as well. All this and Rutger Hauer and
Michael Cain too! Not to mention Morgan
Freeman, and the very sexy star Katie Holmes,
And "Scary Gary" Oldman as a Good Guy! See
this movie on "The Big Screen" before you miss
the chance to. It does not disappoint. Which
is pretty rare in Hollywood movies these days.
My brother who likes mostly war movies and historical epics, made the remark that Batman Returns is the best movie of the year. Elaine

Watching BATMAN made me
think how MAYBE Burton had not COMPLETELY ruined the POTA franchise yet.
It got the sorta
tweak I’d want to see done to PLANET with great scripting.

Sounds somewhat uninteresting... More than that, it sounds as if they're going to have too many egges in their basket, and will end up with a mess... Trying to get all the characters in there is a big MINUS point...
Trying to cram all the figures from PLANET in there, it's obvious they're just going to be adding them for the sake of including them. It sounds as if it's going to be a hodged-podged mess... <.html

-- Like I said in a previous post I really don't think they have
much choice. It's a 6 part mini-series to start with and they really
do have to have recognisable 'Apes' characters in there if they want
to interest both the general public and us die hard Apes fans.
I tend to agree with the point that Greg brought up that they will
probably be using the main story in each issue to persue the Caesar
Revolution story line and I wouldn't be suprised that the back up
stories will feature Zaius etc. and might have flashbacks to
the 'Revolution' events or something.
From what we know so far I too have reservations about it but I
don't think we should start tearing something to pieces that we
haven't even seen yet!

Should be out shortly, but I'm not sure exactly when. It's slightly later
than usual but this is because we were holding out for a particular article
in the hope that we'd get it in time for this issue. That was the last I
heard, I don't actually know if it arrived in the end. If not I'm sure we'll
get it in for next time.
As for what to expect - this is off the top of my head, I don't know what
the final line-up is - there's a couple of interviews with folk from the
movies, an interview with a major star of British TV who, while not involved
with Apes directly, turns out to be a massive PotA fan and collector so we
couldn't pass up the opportunity, an article that will give those of you
with decent craftsman skills something to do with your time, an article
about the shooting locations, and doubtless more besides that I don't know
about. Oh, and it's got a great cover!
>Yeah - maybe the "big names" that were mentioned are just
>doing covers or something?
I'm too lazy to go back and check, but I think Ty mentioned in the email
that you forwarded that those big names were indeed just doing covers.
I'm still looking forward to this series, I have to say - I prefer to be
optimistic about it and wait and see what they do before I get critical. I
haven't seen anything yet to suggest that they'll do a bad job. I do like
Bernie M. as well, although I haven't heard of the other two artists
mentioned.

REVOLUTION ON THE PLANET OF THE APES:
Scripts by: Ty Templeton, Joe O'Brien
Art by: Max Douglas, Attila Adorjany, Bernie Mireault
For the last twenty four hours, there have been rumours and
unofficial reports that San Diego is in flames, that the governor of
California is dead, and that the cause of all this chaos is a
talking ape named Caesar. But when the President of the United
States announces that the whole thing is a hoax, no one knows what
to believe, until a Pentagon reporter named Nora Rhodes decides to
go to San Diego and find the truth for herself.
Can Nora survive in New Ape City? Can Caesar survive the gorilla
rebellion? And can humanity survive a war that fate tells us we
cannot win?
MR COMICS brings the ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES back in a six issue
mini featuring Caesar, Aldo, Dr. Zaius, Cornelius, the Lawgiver,
Zira, Colonel Taylor, and other characters from the classic film
series.
Each comic contains TWO simian packed stories, with scripts by
Eisner-Award winning author Ty Templeton (Spider-Man Human Torch,
Simpsons, Batman Adventures) and Joe O'Brien (Robocop: Prime
Directives). Artists include acclaimed illustrator Max Douglas
(Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange) hot new penciller Tom Fowler (Green
Arrow, Star Wars), digital painter Attila Adorjany (Beowulf), Eisner-
nominated colourist Bernie Mireault, and others. With dramatic
painted covers by Denis Rodier.
GET YOUR STINKING PAWS ON THIS COMIC, YOU DAMN DIRTY HUMANS!!

*** Excellent job, one and all, for the new TV cards set. I'd like to
thank a 'certain someone' personally, here, for sending me a disc
with the frame-grabs from the BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST, BATTLE, and
this new TV pilot set to me (for some reason, I wasn't able to
download the zip files, and this 'certain someone' went out of his
way to supply them to me).
I've also recently was sent -- gratis! -- the 2-disc dvd set of the
RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES cartoons. Again, I wish to
wholeheartedly thank that 'certain someone' who sent it to me.
I've also been informed that of all those who were responsible for
that fan-produced set, by far the most important contributor was
Hunter Goatley, who made the tape-to-dvd transfer. Kudos to all those
involved in this "for the fans" dvd set, but most especially to
Hunter. Top notch work, Mr. Goatley. Top notch!

Some time back, I once mused that the storming of Breck's Command Post
by the apes-in-revolt was reminiscent of the situation faced by Hitler
when the Russians were hammering their way through Berlin, as der
Fuhrer lurked in his Fuhrer-bunker. Breck didn't 'off' himself, as did
Hitler, but the situation seemed to be somewhat similar.
I recently thought that the tension between Caesar and Aldo in BATTLE
was reminiscent of the tensions between President Truman and General
MacArthur. Truman eventually had to remove MacArthur from his position,
since the General wanted to MAKE policy rather than merely carry out
the policy of another with whom he disagreed. The Serling-
scripted "SEVEN DAYS IN MAY" also hinged on this antagonistic tension,
pitting a well-thought-of military man against his civilian Commander-
In-Chief.
Any thoughts...?

Hitler, but the situation seemed to be somewhat similar.
I seem to recall Don Murray saying in an interview that part of Governor Breck's speech -- the "If we lose this battle it'll be the end of the world as we know it." stuff -- was based on something
Hitler raved about in his bunker.

Yeah, I too can't seem to get the zip files for the screen grabs to
work on my computer but I did just download the new board game from
Kass's site and it looks pretty cool. I haven't printed it out and
tried to play it yet but I downloaded and opened the files with no
trouble. It seems perfect for the T.V. series fan with gameplay cards
with themes such as "Captured", "Escape", "You've Been Seen" and all
the other elements found in every episode of the series. Me and my
Son should have minutes of fun with this. :) Seriously, thanks to
everyone who helped put this together and out there for us to share.
I've watched my copies of the Return to the Planet of the Apes and
the extended Battle DVD's more times than I care to count and can't
wait to see if Hunter comes through with his collection of rare clips
DVD. There are a lot of talented Apes fans out there and I'm glad
most are so generous and share their work so freely. Speaking of
talented, generous and freely sharing Apes fans. Sure would be nice
to get a new comic fix right about now.

with extra pages and art, so I could stand to wait a few days for new

If you haven't yet, I HIGHLY recommend that you order hardcopies of
Beware the Beast from Mr. Whitty. Besides getting extras available
nowhere else, you're sending a clear and much-needed message to Neil
and Michael that their work is appreciated. Think about it; Do you
want to risk losing these two dedicated fanatics because they think

Dear All,
Fox are releasing box sets of Planet of the apes, Fight club and other
classic films that have the original books in with the dvd in a box set. The
Planet of the apes has a new print of Monkey Planet in the Orange anniversary
artwork cover.
So mystery solved I hopw. I might buy it when it comes down in price as
they all do sooner or later.
John B Kirtley.
P.s. Don't know if there are any extras on the dvd as you can't tell which
burn of the dvd it might be without opening the package.

I am still trying to put together a
definitive list of POTA parodies in comic strip form.
This is a list I came up
with so far:
THE PLANET THAT
WENT APE, UNDERNEATH THE PTWA, ESCAPING FROM THE PTWA & CONQUERING
THE PTWA / Mad #157 March 1973 (parodies of the first 4
films / Ape cover)
UNDERNEATH THE
PLANET OF THE APES / Cracked #? ? ? (parody of
Beneath)
ESCAPE FROM THE
BOREDOM OF THE APES / Cracked #? ? ? (parody of
Escape)
PLANET WITH THE
APES / Cracked #123 March 1974 (parody of TV show / Ape
cover)
PLANETS OF THE
CREATURES / Cracked Collectors' Edition September 1982 (parody
of POTA featuring the ansanauts on various talking animal planets / story
probably first appeared in an earlier issue?)
BENEATH THE
DIGNITY OF THE APES / ? #? ? ? (parody of
Beneath)
Any of the missing
details really would be much
appreciated as would any details of strips I haven't got here and that others
know of or have.
Thanks,
Neil

Hello Neil, the short answer to your question is erm maybe! As a
complete luddite (I was still using Windows 95 a few months ago)I'm
not sure how! Looking at the cover though it does look like Dave's
given it a bit of a tweak, which is no bad thing. The original is
slightly smaller than A4 so it will be interesting to see what it's
like printed as it was always done with an eye to reduction.
