Hi-res files, suitable for printing, of the TV series card set are now available to download from Hunter's site.
Additionally, the 142 screen captures that I did for the set are available as well. These can be downloaded as either a single zip file, or individually.
Some have had problems extracting the files from the zips of the movie captures. Hunter used
Info-ZIP's Zip V2.31 to create them and has had no problem unzipping with both UnZip v5.42 and WinRAR (and I've had no problem using WinRAR myself). We have no idea why others have any problems,
but there are so many "zip" clients out there, there's no telling which ones are buggy. We didn't think anybody would want to download that many image files individually and that most people would want
them all anyway (hence the zips), but for this set we're trying out the idea of making the images available individually to see how it goes.
Thanks,
Greg

Cheers T that would be much appreciated if you get the chance. And
don't worry, I'll remind you (probably often) ;-)

I love my copies of "Beware the Beast" and it does seem like their
would be some interest in purchasing printed copies of this story
too, once it has been finished. I only ask now because I know there
is a cost issue in printing these and maybe you could collect money
from serious interested parties in advance to keep your cost down
this time.

I don't see why it can't be done. Of course I'm just the monkey
chained to the drawing board so all that sort of thing would have to
be discussed with my writer/editor/manager/guru and thouroughly decent
chappie Mr. Whitty. ;-)

Okay, first a big
thank you to Graham Hill who has shared some of his POTA paintings with us. I
have just uploaded them to the 'Members' Art Gallery' folder in the Files
section:
Here are the links
to the individual paintings including the art for the cover of the latest issue
of Simian Scrolls (#11)
Once again, a big
thanks to Graham for sharing these with us and everyone should go and check
these out, Graham has a great and individual style to his paintings and it's
always great to see new POTA art!

That seems vaguely familiar.
But they must have been mislabeled.
Elaine can't find them either.
Maybe they're under a different name.

Arthur Jacobs' versions of "Tom Sawyer" and
"Huckleberry Finn" have come to DVD but www.hometheaterforum.com warns
that they are poor quality, grainy and cropped. Buyer beware. They say the
laserdiscs were pretty good; "Tom Sawyer" had audio commentary by the famed
Sherman Bros. songsmiths and a featurette. Anyway, that brings most of Jacobs'
movies to DVD: the POTA films, Tom and Huck, "What A Way To Go", "Doctor
Dolittle" and "Play It Again, Sam". - - - Jeff

.htmlTrue, Caesar led the revolution in "CONQUEST", but by the
time "BATTLE" happens, he seems to have delegated the military
command duties to Aldo... "GENERAL Aldo!" as he insists Jake call
him, right after the opening credits.
When Aldo goes to the Armory to get guns to defend Ape City from
Kolp's invading army, there's this little exchange (from Scene 283 in
the "BATTLE" screenplay):
MANDEMUS "Who are you...?"
ALDO "Aldo. GENERAL Aldo."
MANDEMUS "What do you want?"
ALDO "Guns."
MANDEMUS "What will you do with them...?"
ALDO "We shall do what we will."
MANDEMUS " 'Do what you will' is the Devil's law..."
ALDO (scornfully) "And who are you, Mandemus? God?"
MANDEMUS "I am the keeper of Caesar's conscious."
[Should be "conscience" by the way -- a misspelling on Dehn's part]
ALDO "And I am the keeper of Caesar's Army."
MANDEMUS "Under allegiance to Caesar. Where is HE?"
ALDO "Mandemus, as I speak, our city is under attack by Humans from
without and within. Who cares where Caesar is?"
MANDEMUS "I care. It is the Law that weapons may only be issued from
this Armory under direct orders from Caesar -- not under threats from
one of his thicker-headed subordinates for whom war means only
personal glory."
Even though the line isn't in the script, in the scene where
Cornelius chases after his pet squirrel, Ricky, only to discover
Aldo's campfire meeting, Aldo tells his gorillas, "Without us, there
would be no army!" (or words to that effect).
I almost get the impression that not only has Caesar relinquished his
own personal role as the Apes' (and Humans') MILITARY leader --
letting Aldo, as his subordinate, 'play' the role of General -- but
he has also seemingly decreed there to be no further need for a
military, since the Nuke War seems to have destroyed all potential
enemies.
He has the guns kept locked up in an overseen Armory. The total
population of Apes -- who ALL fought in the Revolution against
Breck's security forces -- has relinquished their roles in
the 'militia'... all except the GORILLAS.
It's as if ALDO (perhaps on behalf of all gorillas) was the only ape
around who had the wisdom to know that they WOULD need an Army to
protect Ape City. He seems to have INSISTED that there still be an
Army, as protection against any and all outside forces which MIGHT
come from over the horizon to re-enslave them.
And Caesar, perhaps, comes to a compromise and allows the gorillas to
keep playing at war -- though he himself forbids his own son from
playing with guns (even pretend-guns: STICKS!) and making a game of
war -- though he makes sure not to arm them with guns. But he does
this to humor Aldo (and like-minded gorillas), not out of any real
fear that they have 'enemies' lurking beyond their horizons.
It's only AFTER the recon mission to the Forbidden City -- and the
armed skirmish with the 'hostile' and 'mad' so-called 'mutant' humans
still living there -- that Caesar recognizes that the possibility of
an invasion is all-too-real, because he now KNOWS that there were
survivors of the War still dwelling there, and that they're armed.
And, his prejudiced opinion about their 'radiation-induced' madness
leads him to become thoroughly convinced that they just MIGHT come
out of their City and attack Ape City. In the screenplay, Aldo
asks: "Did the humans follow you... HERE?" and he replies, "We saw no
sign of it. But you are right. We have to plan against a time when
they MAY come out of the City... when they MAY find us." ... "Our
Gorilla Army will exercise constant vigilance through continuous
patrols. Civilians will assist in building defenses. And we should
discuss training a Militia in the theory, but not yet the practice,
of battle." [Scenes 153-156]
In other words, somewhat of a return to the situation in "CONQUEST",
when EVERY ape was a part of the fighting force that won freedom for
them all. It's no wonder that the 'GORILLAS CHEER' [Scene 156A] this
decision of Caesar's. It is a vindication of their on-going vigilance
against the 'enemy' they always knew MIGHT be out there.
Caesar had once been their military leader and, for years afterward,
in the aftermath of the Nuke War, he seems to have relinquished that
role (allowing Aldo to put on the airs of 'General' in an army that
Caesar thought would never be needed again...).
When you say that "Aldo was far from being well-thought-of by the
masses", I assume you're referring to the Chimps, Orangutans, and
Humans... but NOT the Gorillas, right? It isn't until the PUBLIC
accusation of Aldo's killing of Cornelius that the other gorillas
turn on him, pointing THEIR accusatory fingers at him (even though
some of those very gorillas are just as guilty by association, having
stood idly by as he hacked the branch with his sword). Until then,
his fellow gorillas seem to have thought VERY highly of him, indeed:
at least, those we see on-screen.

*** Well, this ain't a comment on the CIRCULAR-vs-CHANGED FUTURE
timelines debate, but it is related to chronology.
In "BATTLE" (the screenplay) the death of Kolp is in Scene 387 & 388.
The next sequence (Scene 389-389C) depicts the return to the
Forbidden City of TWO MUTANT SOLDIERS who inform Alma and Mendez that
their side lost the battle (though they don't know what's happened to
Kolp). Perhaps Kolp was still alive when they headed back home (which
would make them Deserters, wouldn't it?...), knowing they'd lost.
It's in this scene where Alma goes to detonate the Alpha Omega bomb,
having received the equivalent of the signal Kolp said he'd relay to
her... and Mendez' convincing her NOT to detonate it, but
to "respect" it... even to "venerate" it.
Anyway, Scene 390 and following depicts the immediate aftermath of
the battle, as Caesar and Virgil go to free the Humans from the
Corral, and the confrontation with Aldo, etc.
It makes sense THEMATICALLY for the Alpha Omega bomb "almost-
detonated" scene to break up the Ape City scenes (Aldo's killing of
Kolp and his later confrontation with Caesar)... but CHRONOLOGICALLY
it doesn't make much sense.
The journey there-and-back from Ape City to Breck's/Kolp's City and
back to Ape City again was a "three day journey" (on foot). Granted,
by jeep & schoolbus (etc) the one-way trip from Kolp's City to Ape
City would take less than a single day, provided that they didn't
have that many mechanical breakdowns, and that their infantry (their
FOOT-soldiers: some of those 'Mutants' walked alongside the jeeps,
etc.) could exchange places with vehicle-riding soldiers. Walk an
hour... ride for an hour... walk an hour... ride another hour... etc
etc.
But those two 'mutant soldiers' who informed Alma and Mendez about
their defeat had to have gotten back home pretty damned quick for
that scene to have taken place between the killing of Kolp and the
showdown between Caesar and Aldo.
I think it makes sense -- chronologically speaking -- to put Scenes
389-389C AFTER the events depicted in Scenes 390 and following. In
other words, those two mutant war-survivors limped back home HOURS
after Caesar revenged his son's death by killing Aldo -- perhaps even
getting back to the Forbidden City the NEXT DAY. But, rather than
have the movie END with that scene, they chose to 'end' the story
with Caesar telling Mandemus that they must wait... sequeing into the
Lawgiver's wrapping-up scene: "We still wait, my children..."
Again, it makes THEMATIC sense for that Alpha Omega bomb scene to be
sandwiched in where it breaks up the two major scenes (Kolp's death
and Aldo's death), but it makes better CHRONOLOGICAL sense to post-
date it to the next day.
Atsa my opinion, anyway.

Excellent art as always. That's a real brutal fight in strip 45, which Neil's art expresses perfectly. I like the sound effect streaming across the top to remind us that these gorillas are being forced
to fight under mutant influence.
I don't have the previous strips handy so I don't recall the last strip where we saw Milo, Ursus and Zaius but there's something jarring about strip 46 that makes me feel like I missed
something. The tails on Zaius' word baloons lead up. Where is Zaius speaking from? Did he get on a horse? Is he up on a ladder? On stilts? Trampoline? Once I go back and read the previous strips it will
probably make perfect sense, but it does sort of highlight the problem of just getting to read a strip or two every few weeks.

Yeah, I always think I missed the last one.
Though it's usually not the case. I just don't

each frame as a chapter. But it is, as always

Zaius speaking from? Did he get on a horse? Is he up on a ladder? On
stilts? Trampoline? Once I go back and read the previous strips it will
probably make perfect sense, but it does sort of highlight the problem of just
getting to read a strip or two every few weeks.
Here's the latest chapter . . .

Well, we should try and print the strips as large as possible to show off Neil's art at it's best. On the other hand, it does seem as though the writer has structured his story in such a way that every
fourth strip has a reveal or twist of some kind.
The format of the BtB and Argentinian comics was by necessity (the limitation on the maximum paper size I could print) although it helped that the size I used matched the original Argentinian comics pretty closely.
Neil's art for BtB had to be reduced slightly to fit the format, but it still looked good at the smaller size. But that was inked art and the Within strips are pencil art, and I'm wary of reducing them too much
and losing the detail in the pencils. I'd prefer to print two strips per page, sideways, so that when you open the book you've got 4 strips across a two-page spread.
The next question is how many strips are we going to wind up with? Too many pages and I'll exceed the maximum amount of sheets I can bind with the equipment I have.

He thinks landscape, 2 strips per page (like the
Garfield
compilations).
I still think A4, 4 strips per page.
What REALLY matters is what out printer dude thinks.
Hey printer dude, stop bouncing on the trampoline and give us some advice

Yeah, I always think I missed the last one.
Though it's usually not the case. I just don't
remember it. And it is a bit confusing labeling
each frame as a chapter. But it is, as always
a great installment. And I'm thinking about
printing them out again. Whenever I have a
few saved up I like to read it like an old comic.
But as long as the quality is there, I'm happy
having Neil work at his own pace. It is amazing!

hey-
thanks for letting me know that apes are on right now.
the shoreline in "tomorrow's tide" was a nice visual reference to the first movie.
now that "legacy" has started, we are given a nice look at the remains of a human city; another nice reference to the movies.
also, i noticed that alan pronounced the general's name "oorko"

last night i watched a movie called "the hellstrom chronicle."
it was a documentary about insects.
my friend sent it to me because he said it reminded him of pota. (the premise of movie is that insects will one day be the dominant life form on earth)
but the best part was the LALO SHIFRIN music. it was VERY ape-ish.
worst part was the (apparently) staged murder of several animals.

Well many of the comics I used to read didn't have a set
number of strips per page. It might be 4 per page most
of the time. But if there was something detailed they
wanted to emphasize, they would have just two bigger
panels, or even one big one that took up the entire page.
Has no one else seen comic books like that? Maybe
they aren't like that any more, since the graphic novel.

.htmlComics are still very much like that. Most have no real set format.
You could have two pages with around 4 panels on each and then turn
the page to find a full single page frame of something exciting or
crucial to the story.
