fact I think I used the same dimensions as Calvin & Hobbes strips.
Does anyone have any collected editions of those? If so what format
are those printed up in?

The Calvin & Hobbes were 9"x8 1/2" and had 3 daily strips per page and the Sunday was on 1 page. The treasuries were a little bigger but still had the same strip count per page. There was only one
C&H collection that differed from this (that I know of) and it had 2 daily strips per page and the Sunday still on 1 page. I think this was when Watterson changed the format of his Sunday strip. It was
essentially in landscape format.

I just read the lastest strips and they were outstanding! I could hear the mutant mind control as I read the first strip. And the look on Ursus' face was priceless. I can't wait to see where this goes from
here. Are we still nominating people to get it next? Is there anyone that hasn't seen it yet?

This is what the Garfield strips were too -
one strip for Monday - Saturday and a double sizes for Sunday.

Hi Michael I have seen some of the comics you and Neil been
doing!! Although I seem to have lost track how many there are?
Certainly all this talk of hard copies has got me intrigued , how do
I get copies and how much? Now you really don't want me to start to
talk about the Marvel comics because well I just wo'nt sut up !!
I was nine or ten when I first picked up the mags. The first two
issues with Mike Ploog art on Terror Still looks fantastic, that
wonderful wash work. As a kid I always thought it odd when
people ,on the letters page, thought that his apes looked strange I
think It was a fantastic interpretation. I've allways maintained
that because, for Marvels editorial dept, the title was abit off the
beaten track (How many editors did it have ?? ) it seemed to attract
artist who responed to the freedom of not being constantly second
quessed and just liked to be left alone, never happen with a movie
comic these days. The best example of this was Tom Sutton ,his
Future History Chronicles is my all time fave !! I seem to remember
reading that he claimed he'd never seen the movies and you know it
didn't matter the work just stands up.He seemed to make a carreer of
trying to find places where he could just work with out
interference, I've just got a stack of Charlton comics most with
Sutton art in, fantastic stuff , he was paid something like $20 a
page which even in the 70's wasn't much but they just accepted the
work with out interference so he was quite happy to do
them.Certainly on apes Marvel, who would have paid more, got more
out off Sutton than he got out of them.
See told you I'd ramble on I'm off to read some of those
Charltons :)
Best Graham.

some of the artists' apes, they let them interpret them as they saw
fit. How true that it couldn't happen these days.

Okay, I'm home from work now and located my copy of strips 41 through 44 and I can see that Zaius was on a horse in strips 43 and 44. I'd just forgotten.
Looking at strip 44, the group is on a slope, with Zaius and his horse slightly down-slope from the rest of the characters. In fact, it looks like Zaius' head is just about even with Ursus' head because of
the slope of the ground.
So maybe he did switch to a trampoline by strip 46!

No actually Ursus and Milo are standing on a part of the ground that

By Neil
Foster:
(1) Beware the Beast (Pt 1 and 2) - Written by Dave Ballard
(those who know Simian Scrolls will know Dave);
(2) Within
the Planet of the Apes - STRIP format; written by me, created over a few wines
(when Neil and I got together in Surfer's Paradise) with the intention of giving
fans something to discuss. Originally it was though of by Neil and I as
a "throwaway", "fun" kinda thing where Neil could develop
a different "more comicy" style.
It is ALMOST
complete. 56 strips (chapters) completed - 46 have been shared with the
group.
(3) Planet of
the Apes - the TV Series.
Part 1 -
Going Home (22 pages);
Part 2 -
Being Home (22 pages);
Part 3 - A
New Home (22 pages).
Part 1 is
complete - pencils done (some more rough than others). The inked pages
have been shared with the POTADG and these are pp 1 - 10.
Part 2 is
mostly written and roughly planned.
Part 3 is
being developed.
The
prospective publishers have asked that by Part 3 we have characters that would
make a good TV Show. This company is right into comics that become movies
and/or TV Shows...but we'll see (don't get your hopes up).

Hi
Graham.
A lot of
people have asked recently so here we go:
There IS a
hard copy of Beware the Beast. This is 2 x 22 page
booklets.
It contains
extra pages (and some pencils by Neil that are extremely interesting) that
were not in the internet publication. Also includes original
covers.
For $20 US I
will send these to you via Express Post (which is about $15 of that
$20).
We had these
printed for publishers and interested parties and because they cost about $5 to
make it is not that we are SELLING them, but PROVIDING them at cost to fans who
want to see them.
Best way to
get these is to place $20 in my PAYPAL account: whitty
@...
Since I
pre-bought the envelopes and paid for the comics to be printed (as per the
people who SAID they wanted one) it really would be critical to any further
printings that I clear these out.
Beware the
Beast is now with a publisher who wants an extensive rewrite so when these are
published and available on newsstands they will be different
again.
I am also
waiting to hear back from Ty Templeton about whether he might publish it too -
and he has stated this will depent largely on sales of his 6 part series
"Revolution on the POTA".

Shut up or you will give Neil ideas! :)
I was nine or ten when I first picked up the
mags. The first two issues with Mike Ploog art on Terror Still looks
fantastic, that wonderful wash work. As a kid I always thought it odd when
people ,on the letters page, thought that his apes looked strange I
think It was a fantastic interpretation. I've allways maintained that
because, for Marvels editorial dept, the title was abit off the beaten
track (How many editors did it have ?? ) it seemed to attract artist who
responed to the freedom of not being constantly second quessed and just
liked to be left alone, never happen with a movie comic these days. The
best example of this was Tom Sutton ,his Future History Chronicles
is my all time fave !! I seem to remember reading that he claimed he'd
never seen the movies and you know it didn't matter the work just stands
up.He seemed to make a carreer of trying to find places where he could
just work with out interference, I've just got a stack of Charlton comics
most with Sutton art in, fantastic stuff , he was paid something like $20
a page which even in the 70's wasn't much but they just accepted the
work with out interference so he was quite happy to do them.Certainly
on apes Marvel, who would have paid more, got more out off Sutton than he
got out of them. See told you I'd ramble on I'm off to read some of those
Charltons :) Best Graham. <.html

most disheartened to hear that so many of the characters that seemed
to be on everyone's lists would not see the
light of day. Does anyone here know, or is there even a way to know,
how many people used that form letter and sent it to them?
-- Well I can't be too much help I'm afraid. I haven't bothered to
collect them as I just can't afford to and won't be buying any
anytime in the future.
The only way to know how many people have actually sent the letter
off to Sideshow would be if those who did responded and said if they
have.
I have started a poll on the subject and the easiest way would be if
people use that.

I saw "The 40 Year Old Virgin", probably the
acclaimed movie of the week. Anyway, he's got a lot of action figures in his
apartment. What a dweeb, huh? Who would collect action figures? Anyway, he's got
lots and lots of them, so many it's hard to see if he has many POTA items. But
there is a good shot of a Sideshow Dr. Zauis in his hand (when he should've been
holding something else), and I also saw a Zauis model kit on the bed when he
almost lost the title condition.
Anyway, this is a good comedy, it's very much
a guy sex comedy but it has heart too, which sets it apart. Looks to be the # 1
movie of the week.

Once again, a
big thanks to Graham for sharing these with us and everyone should go

Cornelius hasn’t had a hit for a
while Patrick – the lungs tend to go back to being less resistant.
I used to smoke a pack a day. I quit for 3 days and when I started again I
got head ruches and I coughed – I was not used to it.
BUT…I think, again, the actual
problem was that the script writer did not know Cornelius was previously a
smoker.

smoker... but can't handle a cigar?
In "BENEATH", in
the scene where Zira and Cornelius get back home
from the Citizens' Council meeting, Cornelius has
a pipe in his hand.
In the Adobe Reader "BENEATH" screenplay
-- check out Hunter
Goatley's site for a downloadable copy of this --
this is how scene
50 reads:
___________________________________________________________
50 INT. ROOM DARKLY CURTAINED AGAINST THE SUN -
DAY
The interior of the house is very
"ordinary": it has
wooden furniture, an easy chair, pictures, and a
photo-
graph of their wedding day in a gilt frame. There
is
a curtained doorway on one side, and on the other,
an
open archway that leads to a small kitchen. The
whole
atmosphere is very suburban and domestic.
CORNELIUS takes off his shoes, settles himself in
the
easy chair with a sigh, and finds his pipe.
CORNELIUS
The trouble with us intellectuals,
my dear, --
(filling his pipe)
-- is that we have responsibility,
-- but no power.
He lights his pipe. SEEN PAST him in the kitchen,
ZIRA
has put on her apron, taken out a China bowl, and
a box
of ready-mix, and with a fork, is stirring some
sort of
batter. [etc]
______________________________________________________________
So... Cornelius, at some point, seems to have
taken up pipe-smoking
(in the filmed version, David Watson indeed is
seen holding the pipe.
It can be seen in frame-grab #206 in the pic
collection done for the
TOPPS cards by Greg Plonowski.
We don't actually see him smoking the pipe (as I
recall), with smoke
coming out of the pipe and him puffin' smoke rings
like Gandalf or
Bilbo Baggins... but I think it's reasonable to
conclude that at this
point in his life, Cornelius has taken up the
smoking of a pipe,
though if he's smoking tobacco or marijuana is
anybody's guess!
One question, though (and it's the unflubber in me
that just has to
ask!): Why, in "ESCAPE", does Cornelius
cough his lungs out when
Armando gives him a cigar to smoke, in
congratulations for his
becoming a father? If he's used to drawing in
lungfulls of smoke
through a PIPE, then why would he have a harsh
reaction to getting a
lungfull of CIGAR smoke?
I ain't a smoker, and can't stand second-hand
smoke of any kind, so I
wouldn't know -- from an experiential standpoint
-- how different it
might feel to smoke a Pipe as opposed to a Cigar.
Any smokers here? Or, former smokers? Pipe
smokers? Cigar smokers?
Cigarette smokers? Reefer puffers? Bueller?
Bueller?
Are Armando's cigars the smokers' equivalent of
Thai food spices --
so harsh it'll burn the taste-buds off like molten
magma? Is pipe
tobacco likely to be less harsh (perhaps in
quantity) than the
tobacco in a cigar?
If you do have some info that'll shed light on
this possible
(probable?) flub, just remember: Don't be blowin'
smoke up our asses!
Patrick
P.S. Doesn't Zaius have a pipe in the post-Trial
scene in "PLANET"
(the scene where he threatens Taylor with
emasculation and
lobotomization if he doesn't 'confess' as to the
location of his
alleged 'tribe')? How widespread is tobacco-use in
Apedom? Julius
smokes cigars... does that make it a Class-based
type of thing? The
intellectuals smoke pipes -- picture J.R.R.
Tolkien smokin' a pipe --
but the 'working class' fellas puff cigars? I'm
picturing General
Jack Ripper in "DOCTOR STRANGELOVE" and
J. Jonah Jameson in
the "SPIDER-MAN" comics, here, as
opposed to Pacino in "SCARFACE".
Another cigar-related question: When Taylor helps
Lucius to konk out
Julius ["GRAB HIM!"], Julius is knocked
unconscious by a blow to the
noggin from a billy club/truncheon... and his
cigar is danglin' outta
his mouth! They tie him up and leave him there...
with a LIT cigar
still in his mouth. And there's STRAW on the
floor, ain't there? At
least, enough of it to pose a FIRE hazard, if that
cigar should fall
out of his mouth and roll across the floor...
Is that how Zira's absconding with "Bright
Eyes" was discovered? Did
a fire get started, as an unconscious Julius'
mouth slackened open
and his cigar fell out, setting fire to the
straw-strewn holding pen
for humans? As Zira & Lucius rode their wagon
outta town, did some
ape see smoke coming from her workplace... or,
maybe, SMELL the
burning straw?
Hmmm...

But cigars can make you cough your guts up if you're not used to them.
I remember when I was about 15 or so and I had just started smoking
cigarettes (on a non regular basis at the time) and one of my mates

turned a nasty shade of green and puked and puked. I have never tried

But maybe at these prices, they can afford
not to “sell-out” each line (that’s the reason Rittenhouse went for their price tags I think).

.htmlI do love Graham's painting's but I do like it when a comics cover is
relative to the material inside, and your right, it seldom does. The
artist who does the cover is seldom the artist who illustrates the
issue.

But cigars can make you cough your guts up if you're not used to them.
I remember when I was about 15 or so and I had just started smoking cigarettes (on a non regular basis at the time) and one of my mates got me a cigar from somewhere and I smoked the whole thing, then
turned a nasty shade of green and puked and puked. I have never tried another cigar since then (though I did take up that nasty habit of smoking cigarettes full time).

I was pleasantly surprised last night when I arrived home and found Beware The Beast in my mailbox. Thanks, Michael and I love having the hard
copy in my hands. Amazing that
it arrived so soon from Aussie land yet when I order a textbook from within the US it takes forever to get to me. I HIGHLY recommend that
those of you that do not have this

A couple of things I was wondering about though were what size do you
generally work at? Also how long does it take you on average to finish
one of these apes paintings and do you do them in set stages (ie:
under painting, background etc.)?

the rings and gave them out to people who worked for him. I think
there is a chance that it may be real, but if it was, there should be
others like it around and it may be possible to confirm with other
owners.
The picture is way to small to make out any great detail. I say that
because I think there were similar ring much like it being sold a
while back, but those did not claim any Chambers lineage. It may be
one of those in which case it certainly isn't worth the minimum bid.
Does make me wonder though. Does anyone know anything about making
jewelry? I wonder how hard it would be to have a ape ring made. I
wouldn't mind having one. :)

with all the classic characters that are expected to appear, maybe we will get one of those "floating heads" covers at some point.
but on that note, i wonder if the characters will look lik e the actors, or if some type of licensing thing prevents it?

the fact The Marvel ape covers rarely reflected the content didn't
reduce their effectivness. I suppose with apes, because it could be
seen as an anthology, an iconic cover was quite appropriate. The key
I think with a regular comic is variety.Over the last few years I've
become increasingly annoyed with Amazing Spiderman, every cover
seems to be Spiderman swingging by or standing on some New York sky
scrapper. To make matters worse recently they've all had the same
colour scheme.

I would have gone, but I hate crowds. And between

trouble than it was worth. I said goodbye as he'd

know what I'm talking about -- just about the time
they were firing the good doctor's remains out of a

That's
better!
Thanks
Tim!
Is it the
same ring?
How much did
it cost?
Michael
Well that's not very big! Here's a better
look!

What a

Yeah, it was down right weird to see
him describe it in a documentary that
was made almost 30 years ago, and
it was complete with an animated
cartoon of it at the end. Even more
eerie is him talking about how he'd
probably kill himself because his
legend had taken on a life of it's
own. The ironic part is his send
off was such an event, it was just
the sort of thing the Doc himself
would crash and trash because
it was too Hollywood. Too bad
the only two people to have ever
portrayed him, Bill Murray and
Johnny Depp, were guests. It
would have been a hoot if some
one could have played him
crashing his own funeral !!!

.htmlBill Blake says it's probably the real deal. Bill knew this Vern guy back
in the day (IF it's the real Vern, know wha' I mean, Vern?) and that he
worked for Chambers and Don Post. In fact, it brought back a lot of memories
for Bill. Thanks. - - - Jeff

Don't forget to vote on the poll as to if you have sent Sideshow a
letter or used the form letter. Ironman is trying to get some idea so
he can approach Sideshow with our numbers and hopefully save the Ape
