I guess what I mean by nice cover art is that someone actually
bothered to blend a few pics to create something new and somewhat
original. I figure they could have just used the DVD set cover art as
is.

The big question for me is whether I'm gonna get a copy. I've always
loved the scores from all the movies but not so much the TV series.
I'm going to have to review the TV series to see if I really want this
CD.

But this IS the DVD cover art. Sure, they changed size and positioning to get it to fit the shape of the CD case, but they didn't really create something new.

It doesn't bother me that they went with this. I'm just thrilled that we'll get the TV music on CD. Still, it would have been nice if they used art from the actual episodes covered on the disc, or went with the image from the opening credits of the three gorillas on horseback with the sun behind them.

-- I'm not sure what cover art you got on the release of the DVD box
set over there but here we got that exact picture, all they have done
is move the 2 forground figures up slightly over the background image
of Zaius to make it fit a CD cover size. Not very new or original.

Good God!  The music in RETURN is bloody awful, and one of the reasons I can't stand to watch it.  The music in the TV show is sure not Jerry Goldsmith, but it's better than the cartoon.

Wel, until he met the acid queen - then it got a bit silly.

MM2 is an all time great.

I may buy the TV soundtrack but I was hoping to see a little more music but beggars can't be choosy. I liked the music by Lalo Schiflin  when he did the Music from "Enter the Dragon".  I just hope that there is still some left when I buy the CD.

While I have your attention Rory, I know how you are into the matte
shots in Planet and I was was watching it again last night and I found
another one. When the ship is sinking and Landon says "gone" or
something like that the ship sinks into the lake and the background
shot definitely looks like a painting to me. Had you noticed that one?

Forget what I said. I must be going senile as I didn't remember Zaius

*** Well, I ordered MY copy! I've been waiting for somebody to release
this for years. I've been diggin' the few clips they've offered up for
free previews. Man! Much of it is truly reminiscent of a Goldsmith
and/or Rosenman feel. I'm listening to "Riding For Urko" right now.
Great stuff!

Too bad we gotta wait till October 11th. Drat!

It'd be nice if they'd release ALL the music from the TV show. I wonder
how much of it there was? How many CDs would it take to fit it all in?
Why not start out with a "Volume 1" and eventually release all of it?
They released 3 CDs of music from "THE PRISONER"... why not at least 2
or 3 CDs of POTA TV music? Maybe if we buy up all the copies and
send 'em emails asking for more... More... MORE!!! Maybe then they'll
think, "Hey, those Ape-fanatics'll make these best-sellers... we should
crank out as much product for 'em as we can muster!"

Sound like a plan?

Patrick

P.S. Rory may not like it, but I thought that the music for the cartoon
(at least, the Main Title music) was rather good. I know we'll NEVER
get a CD of the 'toon music score, but it'd be nice to have.

Patrick,

Why do you say that its an impossibility for the Return music to be
released? Is there some sort of legal limbo angle? Someone must own
the rights to it. I do think that its highly improbable seeing as the
episodes themselves are unavailable commercially. (Many thanks again
to all those who were involved in the high quality fan production
DVDs!)

I also agree with you and others that the score of Returns
opening/closing sequence was great. It was original enough but
maintained a distinctive POTA sound to it. Yes, better than the live
series TV show.

When I said "I know we'll NEVER..." etc., I was just
voicing what I deem probable: that whoever might have
the rights isn't going to go to the bother of digging
out the master tapes and remastering 'em and putting
it out as a product for us to buy. What's the demand?
How many people (other than us APES nuts) even
remember "Return"?

Is it an "impossibility"? Nope. I hope not, anyway.
I'd LOVE to see that product out there -- I'd snag a
copy myself, as soon as I knew it was on-the-market,
just as I zipped over to Intrada and put in my order
for the TV show score, mere moments ago.

My gut tells me... my hunch is... that we'll never see
an official release of the "Return" soundtrack music.
But... I never thought that FilmScore Monthly would
acquire the rights to the "LOGAN'S RUN" TV show music,
and then release 'em. But they DID! Amazing! And
totally unexpected.

I'd love to be 'proved' wrong about the Apes 'toon
music! Maybe if Intrada sells out all 3,000 copies in
record time, they'll go "Hmmmmm..." like Arsenio Hall
used ta do, and go out of their way to shell out more
POTA product for a product-buying fanbase.

Hell, after S&H, my copy of the POTA TV score is gonna
be a tad short of $24.00 -- and worth every penny. I'd
happily pay for a "Volume 2"... a "Volume 3"... and a
"Return to the POTA" CD, to boot, at the same price
per unit.

Do I expect 'em to ever be made available? No. But I'd
just LOVE to be wrong about the probabilities in this
regard. Let's hope I am.

Ciao,

Patrick (listening to Goldsmith's POTA score right
now: "The Search Continues"... diggin' that echoey
Forbidden Zone vibe...)

Going by the credits that Mark Rogers has faithfully reproduced on his site ( http://www.hadleyburg.demon.co.uk/patv/pxe.htm ) it appears that there are only two other episodes with original music. Those episodes are The Trap, with music credited to Richard Lasalle, and Tomorrow's Tide, with music credited to Earl Hagen (who also did The Legacy, which is on the CD). The remaining 8 episodes only credit Music Supervision by Lionel Newman and the theme by Lalo Scifrin, so the music for those was probably tracked from earlier episodes.

While it's not impossible that we could get a second release with the remaining music, I tend to doubt it would happen. First, this first release would have to sell out. The CDs that Film Score Monthly did for Beneath and Conquest/Battle have yet to sell out several years after their release. The run size of those was 3,000 just like this one, so I'm not liking the chances of a quick sell-out here.

Second, this disc is not only being marketed to Apes fans, it's being marketed to Lalo Scifrin fans. I'm guessing that Intrada figues that between the two groups of fans they can sell enough copies to justify releasing this CD. You wouldn't have the Schifrin marketing hook on a second CD because all of his music is on this CD.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a second disc with the remaining music. I'd also like to see a CD with Dean Elliot's music from Return. Heck, I wish they'd included the Return opening theme on this CD the way they included Schifrin's TV theme on the Conquest/Battle CD. But frankly I never thought I'd see any music from the TV series released on CD, so I'm very excited to get this release.

Yeah, I was going for that wide eyed look that Linda Harrison does so
well in Beneath, sort of scared of everything because Nova seems to
comprehend little of whats going on around her.

If I had to pick a specific part of the film that the Nova in your painting came from, I'd guess it was somewhere between when Brent and Nova discover the ruins of New York and when she's reunited with Taylor. There's no specific shot in the film that corresponds to this image that I can recall. I'm guessing you don't use photo references, Graham, or if you do they're only to help with parts of the image, like the shape of a nose or the curve of an eyebrow.

I do use photo reference, but it all depends on the painting how
they're used. In this case there was a photo used as a starting
point but by the time the pic' was finnished there was quite a lot
of differance between the two images.I couldn't even tell you which
film the photo came from but those scenes in New York were
constantly on my mind when I was painting.I try not to get to
attached to photo reference as there's not a lot of real visual
information in them. They tend to flatten space and often it's not
clear how a chin curves or how the eyeball sits in its socket .The
british painter Thomas Gainsborough used to arrange bits of twigs
and broccoli in his studio to stand in for a landscape which he
would be adding to one of his portraits, he wouldn't copy the veg
but he'd use it to jog his visual memory ,this is how I try and use
photos. Now if I could get Linda to pose... well I can dream.

I don't have my copy yet so I can't provide a complete list of the contents, but I do know that the new issue contains interviews with Linda Harrison (Nova), Paul Williams (Virgil in Battle) and Dan Abnett (he wrote some of the Dark Horse Ape comics). It has an article on filming locations in the LA area, instructions on making a holster for a gorilla costume, and an Apeslayer strip.

It also has an amazing cover by our own Graham Hill.

When I get my copy I'll post a more detailed review.

Thanks Neil, just looking at the article now, for some reason I've
always found it interesting how different countries treat reprints,
from the cover choices made to graphic design of the comics
particularly when compared back to their source material.

I'm assuming then that you are familiar with the french series which
included covers that were ripped off from other sources including Doc
Savage and the German reprints that used the same US covers but that
colorized the comics.

I know that the German series only had reprinted the US comics, and
I've assumed the same for the Aussie line since nobody here has
mentioned otherwise, but does anyone know if the French line had any
new original stories. Considering they lifted the cover from other
sources and simply painted Ape heads on them, perhaps they did the
same for the stories inside (much like the UK did with the "Apeslayer"
stories.)

If that was the case then I'd definitely start looking at acquiring
the French series because I can certainly read them. I got the German
series because the colorized art was enjoyable on it's own. Even with
those, my very limited German knowledge allowed me to understand some
of the text. I wish there was an Italian line as I would really have
enjoyed that.

Yeah Dario, I 'm aware of the french comics, I've managed to get a
couple over the years (Issue 3 plus another which as with all these
things I can't quite find at the moment ,though both have'nt got the
funky covers you mention.) It appears they were straight reprints of
the
comics from the US mags, certainly #3 has chapter 3 of the movie and
chapter 3 of Terror, plus a couple of text features on Mexico and
vets in zoos. The quality of the printing is much better than POTA
weekly, which as a kid, even though I loved them, I recognized as
being pretty poor.
Best Graham.

One example that springs to mind is the differences between the US mag

The cover I am talking about is the one with the gorillas in the
foreground chasing 2 humans on horses towards the Statue of Liberty.
The US cover has the dark blue background and is just sky. On the
Aussie version (and I think the UK version as well?) the covers were
un-edited and have what must be the original background which is a
light blue sky with a big rock behind Liberty and the gun that the
gorilla on the left of the picture is holding up above his head.

Your review on Sideshow's site will only post if it is positive. They
allow for a rating of 1-5 but its been fairly obvious that a 3 or less
is not going to be a readable review. On the otherhand, if you want the
line to continue, a barrage of positive reviews for the released
figures could only help those chances.

It certainly was, That Max Newton's the kind of publisher I
recognize :)For some reason they remind me of Charlton comics in the
US the double whammy of comic-books and soft core porn to keep the
printing presses going!! It's interesting to see that they led with
POTA as their focus when they launched, certainly in the UK POTA
weekly was Marvels best seller.I've felt for awhile that the US mag
was more of a loss leader than has been admitted, make a small loss
on the domestic print but recoup it internationally(The relaunch of
the X-Men in '75 has been said to have grown out of the wish to have
a team with diverse members so they could flog it to different
countries.)I've never checked the dates but I wonder whether the
cancellation of the US mag ,killing all those profitable foreign
editions, came about because Marvel US was getting ready to be sold
to Cadence inc and was trimming the fat domestically what they were
willing to keep going at one stage suddenly became a loss making
title that needed to taken of the books?

That's an interesting point Graham.

I wish we could track down some old Marvel personnel who might have answers!

Maybe our friends at Scrolls have some ideas - they are great at tracking down people.

Speaking of such - the new issue looks interesting.

I think Rory might even bite the bullet this time, with the "locations" article being featured.

Hope we can all pull together and show our support for the magazine - the ONLY Planet of the Apes mag on the planet.

Just dug out my copy of POTA weekly #35 with the cover you mention
(I daren't try and find my copy of the US mag #7, my partners just
gone to bed so the last thing she'll want to hear is me throwing
comic boxes about :) ) I wonder whether some of the colour
difference is down to bad printing, In some areas it seems a bit
washed out. Like you say though Neil it could be an earlier version
of the painting.
Best wishes Graham.

It is a strange one, I've just looked up the date of the US mag
(thanks to comics .org) to see if they were running against a
deadline
in the UK,but the US is cover dated April '75,so that would have been
on sale Feb or March, while the UK is dated June the 21st,I would have
thought that would have given them time to use the US cover? May be
another country used the lighter cover first and Marvel UK followed?
Best Graham.

There were 13 German issues....I got a set from
Terry...All the covers are the sane as US except the
words of course....And the French comics have some
repeat covers but quite a few original paintings which
can be seen on Hunter's site.....

Hello Michael
No word on the comic yet. But since it is coming from out side the
US and has to go through customs I am sure maybe this week it will
be here. I will let you know either way buy the end of the week if
it has arrived yet or not.
Thanks for checking with me on it though

As Tim already pointed out, there were 13 of them and yes I have them
all.

I too got them off of Terry Hoknes last year. He ran a bunch of Ebay
auctions clearing out lots of his overstock POTA collection. I know
that at the time, he still had extra copies, so if anyone is
interested they should contact him and he may still have some.

What's the colouring like Dario,is it similar to old US four
colour
printing or is it more of a painterly look?
(I did notice, over on the archive site, that Neil had posted up a

Thanks Neil.

Graham: Not sure what you mean by "painterly look" but I'm hoping that
you can see them for yourself with Neil's uploads. I wouldn't know how
to categorize them myself. I don't think they are '4 color printing'
as they seem to have enough variance to go beyond any simple 4 color
blend could create, but then I'm no expert. It's not quite
as 'painted' as I've seen in other comics either. All I know is I
like it. :)

I don't have them with me here and cannot remember if the entire mag
was colored. I'll have to check when I get back home and get back to
you on that.

I started dealing with Terry even before I came across him here in the
DG and before I stumbled upon some of his auctions. Yes he can be
slow at times, and needs gentle reminding now and then, but he's
always come through after a period of time, usually a month or so for
me anyway. I first bought some items off him when I came across his
old POTA fan club website. He seems to jump in and out of Ape fandom
and I think in the interim periods he's with a music band or
something. I suspect that when he disappears, he's may be on the road.

Thanks Dario, just looked at Neil's uploads this was pretty much as I
imagined not quite as "painterly" as other stuff but not 4 colour
printing. They do look nice, it does make me curious,as Neil also

Here's a joke Mike will like . . .

Texas Vs. Australia

A Texan farmer goes to Australia on vacation. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets to talking. The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, "Oh, we have wheat fields that are at least twice that size."

They walk around the ranch a little, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately replies, "We have longhorns that are at least twice that size."

The conversation has died down when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asks the Aussie, "What are those?"

The Aussie replies with an incredulous look, "Don't you have grasshoppers in Texas?"

I wouldn't deal with that dude anymore.  It's not that he's a bad dude, just not really dedicated to what he'd like to have going.  Beware this beast, Man!

I think he just has too much else going on to run it as a serious business.
Terry has always come through for me, eventually.  And when he's been
delayed he's thrown in extras to make up for it.  But he probably can't
make the kind of living he's like of either it, or the band, separately.
If he could, he'd probably hire some help to mind the store when
he's out on the road touring.  And it's not like any of us can
volunteer to help out, since his inventory is so vast.  It's
not like he can drop ship from a corporate warehouse.

    Subject: Foreign comics
    .html
Time for my occasional post... If I'd known there
was talk about Apes comics across the world, I'd
have chimed in sooner. I am interested in the
various printings of the comics too (classic Apes,
not the POTA2001 rubbish), and here's what the
    ones I know about:

AUSTRALIA: Don't know much about these, but we
obviously have other experts in the group when it
comes to these ones anyway, so I bow to their
    knowledge!

ARGENTINA: Well, we know all about these ones,
don't we. The most interesting of the foreign Apes
comics and yet the hardest to find, and also
    completely unofficial.

UK: Marvel weekly (in various guises) reprinted
all US material with lots of new covers (plain old
pencil and ink ones, nothing quite matching the
painted covers by the likes of Larkin for the US
mag) and the UNCUT versions of the movie
adaptations (unlike the US magazines which saw
some strips shorn of several panels for reasons of
space). Also the three annuals by Brown Watson
which feature all new strips based on the TV
    series.

USA: Beneath adaptation by Gold Key, Marvel #1-29,
    Marvel's Adventures #1-11 (colourised reprints
with new covers), Power Records movie adaptations,
Adventure Comics 1-24 (plus a whole bunch of
miniseries and oneshots, and various reprints of
Marvel material) and soon to be joined by MR
    Comics.

FRANCE: 19 issues. Also featured Doc Savage in
some issues, and on some covers. There were a few
original covers (at least two of which were
paintings based on panels of the actual strips) -
the two Escape covers are my favourites. I loaned
these to Dave B who cleaned them up and sent them
on to Hunter, so you can now admire these on
Hunter's site. I don't have all the issues, but I
do own all the ones with new covers. The French
comics were also collected together in bound
volumes (a few issues per volume). The unusual
thing was that it was as if the issues had
literally been bound together - right down to the
fact that each issue was separated by glossy,
coloured covers on thicker stock than the other
interior pages. All issues magazine sized.

GERMANY: 13 issues. All reprints and no new
covers, but the movie adaptations were colourised.
Unlike other colourisation attempts, these did not
use the 4-colour approach but rather the far more
professional full-process colour that makes these
the best coloured of all the colourised Apes
strips. Unfortunately it's only been done for the
movie adaptations - the Ploog strips remain black
    and white. Magazine sized.

SWEDEN: As far as I know, only reprints. I have
little information about this series - I don't
know how many issues it ran or if the reprints
were colorised or anything like that, and I've
only seen the cover of one issue (and it was a
reprinted Marvel cover, albeit presented with a
thick black border that I thought made it look
pretty cool). It's called "Apornas Planet".

MEXICO: Traditional comic book size. Reprints of
Marvel material. Some covers are reprints from the
Marvel mag, some are not. The ones that are not
are not necessarily new - I have one issue for
example that has a cover which I believe was
reprinted from somewhere else, but it's not a
Marvel US cover. I think it was reprinted either
from a Marvel UK cover or else a panel of an
actual strip. I think it might also have been
touched up a bit (recoloured maybe) but I can't
recall. The strips inside contain movie
adaptations and the all-new Marvel material, both
of which have been colourised for this comic. It's
the plain old 4-colour printing though, and thus
features things like blue hair, purple faces, etc.
The quality of the colouring is on a par with the
early strips from the UK annuals, but as far as I
know this is the only series to present Ploog's
    art in a colourised format.

SPAIN: Reprints, plain and simple. Interior and
exterior are copies of Marvel magazine's material.
Don't know how many issues it lasted. No
colourisation. I've heard that some covers were
actually other artists copying the Marvel covers,
but I've not seen any like that, certainly not on
the ones I've seen. I did see one cover however
that was a re-edited version of a Marvel cover
(took a picture of a gorilla and wiped out the
    rest of the background).

ITALY: I don't know of any ongoing series, but
there was one collection in a series of
movie-based comics. It reprinted the first movie
    adaptation together with the "Evolution's
Nightmare" strip. Again it was plain old black and
white, and the cover was a slightly altered
(mainly just re-coloured) copy of a cover from one
    of Marvel's reprint series.

The above information is obviously far from
definitive, but it's all I've uncovered to date.
