Hi Alan, Great post, the various editions always have a
fasination. One thing I never see mentioned is that in Marvel's
Adventure reprints the art on each page is extended in the last tier
of panels (this is as well as dropping whole pages)Alfredo Alcala
suffers quite badly because of this.
Best wishes Graham.

Wowsers, there’s even MORE new pages there and a LOT more about the stories.

Ty has given me the low down on a lot of the different stories (there’s the main CONQUEST based story and 6 other stories!) but I am waiting for his permission to say more.

The ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES characters star in a six issue mini series. Featuring Caesar, Aldo, Dr. Zaius, Cornelius, the Lawgiver, Zira, Colonel Taylor, and others from the classic film series.

GET YOUR STINKING PAWS ON THIS COMIC, YOU DAMN DIRTY HUMANS!!

Revolution answers the question of how Caesar rose to power and the roll he played along with Aldo in the earliest days of the Ape Rebellion.

Each issue contains two simian packed stories [a 16 page instalment of the main story and a 5 page back up] with scripts by Eisner-Award winning author Ty Templeton (Spider-Man Human Torch, Simpsons, Batman Adventures) and Joe O'Brien (Robocop: Prime Directives).

Artists include 2005 Doug Wright Awards Nominee Salgood Sam (Sea of Red, Terminator, RevolveR, Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange), Tom Fowler (Green Arrow, Star Wars), Attila Adorjany (Beowulf), Eisner-nominated colourist Bernie Mireault (The Jam, Grendel, Dr Robot),
Gabriel Morrisette and others.  With dramatic painted covers by Denis Rodier.

-- Thanks for this info Alan. All I can add about the Australian comics is that there were 17 regular issues of the Newton comics plus one annual and 2 'giant-size' un-numbered special editions.
Most use the US covers save for 4 of the later issues and the 2 specials (plus of course they used the un-edited version of US cover #7).
All issues just reprint the US stories and articles except for the Annual which has old Marvel Fantastic 4, Hulk and Avengers stories to help pad it out.
Most of the earlier issues came with a colour poster that was spread across the middle pages and a 'swap card'. The posters and cards reprinted various Marvel covers of the time.

The rarest and hardest to find issue seems to be #16 and I believe the reason for this is that it came with a back cover that was an iron on picture of Captain America and I suppose most copies had their covers chopped of by kids eager to use the iron on.

There were also 2 later reprints issued by Yaffa Publishing Group in 1978 and 1982 (and possibly there were others though I have yet to locate any). These 2 comics were just straight reprints of the US issue 1.

Of course scans of all the covers can now be seen on the DG Photos group in the  Newton Comics (Australia) folder.

The cover and interior are just straight reprints of the US issue 5

    There's a few like that.

There's one with a cover lifted from the title page of "KINGDOM ON AN

the guard in ESCAPE (I think - is that right Neil?).

Nothing terribly original like the UK comics.

And the Aussie ones had a short lifespan too - just over a year.

I was watching Conquest last night and I noticed another of those 'classic' POTA moments.

Just after Caesar and Lisa first meet each other in the bookstore she leaves and then looks back at him through the window. In the background there is a gorilla extra casually leaning against a wall behind her!
He better watch out, those nasty human police will be angry with him if they see him loafing around!

The first issue of the new comic from Mr. Comics will appear in the new issue of Previews that goes on sale in the U.S. next week. According to the order form that's on-line at Diamond's site, it appears on page 300. Here's a link to the new issue of Previews. It has Mickey Mouse on the front cover and Sub-Mariner on the back cover. When you go to your local shop next Wednesday they should have the new Previews and you should be able to ask the shop to order the new comic for you. Orders to Diamond are due by October 15 according to the order form, so don't wait too long or the shop might not be able to order it for you.

If you're outside the U.S. you'll have to ask at your shop to see if they order from Diamond or some other distributor.

If you don't have a shop near you, there are companies that sell new comics on-line. As soon as I see the new comic listed on one of these sites I'll post the info.

I was lucky to have been an "additional" muppeteer on
two films....we were "background" Muppets ...chickens
mostly......and although we never got to do much
closeup work (the REAL Muppeteers did all that) I did

Subject: [PotaDG] New comic from Mr. Comics - ordering from your local shop

        Greg

Yes...post Jim Henson.....his children took over the
company but Steve Whitmire who had worked on Sesame
Street for years took over Kermit....And Frank
Oz....he never showed up on the set....! Another
Muppeteer did Miss Piggy and Oz provided the voice
later.....he was supposed to be there once but had to

          .html Message
Just wanted to let everyone know that the group's posts for March 2004 have been deleted from the main site and can now be found in the files section of the Archives group as a (2 part) text file:

For those of you who are new to the group, we have to do this periodically to free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore. As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups to store excess stuff on.

One very important point - to access the old posts etc. you will need to be a member of the Archives group.
The same is also true for the Fan Fiction and Photos groups:

All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.

          Thanks,

Chuffed generally means very pleased ie "I was really chuffed with
that Planet of the Apes boomerang" Its real meaning (desperately
trying to keep in the pg guide lines) is err sexually satisfied.

Muppet is definitely not a term of endearment in the Uk Elaine,It's
pretty much the same as calling someone a wally but probably not as
bad as calling them a plonker, though in recent years it's
insidiously being replaced with numpty!! :)

company but Steve Whitmire who had worked on Sesame
Street for years took over Kermit....And  Frank

These days comics celebrate 50th issues by going double-sized. For their 50th issue, the folks at Marvel UK proved they were ahead of their time, not by giving you a double-sized issue or a double-length dose of Apes comics. No, this issue contains a double-sized, two-page letter column. So they were ahead of their time, but a little wide of the mark.

This issue also contains the first installment of the adaptation of Escape From the Planet of the Apes. This segment features a sequence that was scripted and filmed, but not included in the final film.

Some of the new rough draft pages are very interesting.

Alpha Omega bomb page then cuts to (next page) strapped chimp
(Caesar?) with electrodes, but the console controller is an ape (so
it's NOT Caesar in his electrocution scene in Conquest but a similar
          one.)

          Well I'm intrigued!

Has anyone heard about this before. I'm sure if the script is legit
then there has to have been some press around in that surfaced when it
was going on. I'd like to see the contents but not the type of
collector that needs the 'original'. Wonder what the final price will
be and if reproductions or scans will eventually be made available.

Subject: Report of AFI's 25 Greatest Film Scores concert
          .html
          .html.html From www.filmscoremonthly.com:

AFI'S 25 GREATEST FILM SCORES AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

          CONCERT REVIEW

By Scott Bettencourt Conductor John Mauceri began the evening with a performance of Alfred Newman 's classic HOW THE WEST WAS WON theme, accompanying a wonderfully edited montage (by Laura Gibson) featuring clips from 157 of the 250 films listed on the ballot sent by AFI to 500 filmmakers, composers, historians and critics (including, I'm happy to say, myself). This montage was comprised of three main sections, covering action, suspense & drama, and comedy. Along with the parade of classic Hollywood images, it featured such recent clips as Jude Law dwarfed by the Flesh Fair moon from A.I., the ring falling onto Elijah Wood's finger from Fellowship of the Ring, and Joaquin Phoenix hiding from a red robed monster in The Village (the most recent score on the ballot), and was spoiled only by the people sitting behind me, who seemed to think they were in their living room playing "Scene It" rather than out in public at a concert, and insisted on loudly saying the name of each movie they recognized.

How the West Was Won turned out to be number 25 on the list, and the only Alfred Newman score to make the cut (if nothing else it has the most famous of Newman's themes). This was followed by #24 , the most surprising and, frankly, undeserved entry on the list, which made me worry that the 25 would ultimately be just a random collection of scores -- Dave Grusin's ON GOLDEN POND . Now I have nothing against Grusin or the score -- it's perfectly fine, and pleasantly restrained considering the extremely sentimental nature of the film - but having voted from the ballot, I know how many remarkable, classic scores had to be left behind to whittle the list down to 25, and Golden Pond just ain't one of them. It does have a pretty theme, and it was nice that the big screen monitors ringing the stage focused a lot of attention on the piano soloist rather than having clips from the film (though, in a welcome touch which showed the wonderful attention to detail given to the entire evening, for each theme the monitor displayed the actual title card and composer credit as seen in the film), but I could name a hundred scores that belonged on the list more than Golden Pond. What's especially surprising is that, unlike some films and scores (such as #12 on the list), neither Golden Pond nor its score nor its composer has seen its reputation grow especially over the years. After all, the big score of 1981 was actually Chariots of Fire , though fortunately that theme wasn't heard tonight (and the most popular among film music fans was Raiders of the Lost Ark).

The next score was also a surprising choice, not because the music isn't popular -- the magazine Movieline used to have a regular column where various film industry people would tell what soundtracks they liked, and this one was mentioned in nearly every issue -- but because the film, though a Best Picture nominee and an Oscar winner, has been mostly forgotten in the nearly two decades since its release. Still, Ennio Morricone's THE MISSION is a wonderful score, and a respectable enough choice for #23 -- it might not be his most truly classic score (that would probably be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly , not considered eligible for being essentially an Italian film) but it's his most popular with the mainstream listening audience and was certainly much better than the film it was written for.

#22 is an unsurprising but arguable choice. ON THE WATERFRONT is a classic film and Leonard Bernstein is certainly a great composer, but is it a great score? Admittedly, I haven't seen the film in decades -- the music is certainly powerful on its own, and had a marked influence on Jerry Goldsmith's City Hall and L.A. Confidential -- but though I know the list wasn't necessarily designed to include all the top composers, it would have been nice if that slot could have gone to a composer with a greater body of work, like Copland or Friedhofer or Kaper or Delerue.

While films 24 through 22 were represented only by short themes, score #21 had the orchestra playing live to picture (and sound effects and dialogue, but not overwhelmingly so) for a lengthy clip. BEN-HUR turned out to be Miklos Rozsa's only film on the list (no Spellbound or Thief of Bagdad ), and was represented by the sequence ("The Desert/Exhaustion/The Prince of Peace") where an enslaved Charlton Heston, dragged through the desert and nearly dead from thirst, is saved by the fortuitous arrival of a certain savior, who gives him water and saves his life (and soul). Rozsa's Christ theme is one of the most gorgeous (yet simple) melodies from the great film music tradition of Hollywood's religious epics, and it was a joy to hear it performed live at the Bowl. It was the only major religious score to make the list, so you can think of it as a place holder for The Song of Bernadette, The Robe, The Ten Commandments, and other classics in the genre.

#20, Henry Mancini's original THE PINK PANTHER , received only a brief rendition of its classic main theme, over shots from the credits of the first film and one of the first '70s sequels. I'm not nearly as familiar with the film as with its sequels, and I'm curious -- is it a great score overall, or just a popular score that features a classic, instantly recognizable theme? Either way, I'm glad Mancini made the list, though I'd thought he'd be represented by Breakfast at Tiffany's as well.

Before each clips, Mauceri would give hints as to the score we were about to hear, and he referred to #19 as the first major film score based on jazz. I immediately thought of Bernstein's Man with the Golden Arm, but then I realized my mistake and the score turned out to be one of the all-time greats (the score that Goldsmith said "changed everything"), Alex North's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE . The orchestra played along to the classic "Stella!" scene (the cue titled "Stan and Stella"), and though the sound effects were a little intrusive, it was great to hear a perennially underappreciated composer like North get such attention, with his gift for scoring intimate drama properly displayed.

The next clip, for score #18, was for many of the audience (at least, myself) the highlight of the evening. PLANET OF THE APES was a hugely deserved but entirely unexpected choice for the list -- an immensely influential score for a classic film, but not one whose themes have entered the public consciousness in the way of a Pink Panther. Mauceri conducted the orchestra to a lengthy clip from the film (with sound effects suitably retrained) encompassing "The Search Continues," "The Clothes Snatchers" and "The Hunt," and though some of Jerry Goldsmith 's distinctive orchestrational effects (like the dazzling steel bowl sound as the astronauts race to the waterfall) didn't receive their full due, overall it was an impressive performance and a thrilling opportunity to hear a healthy chunk of one of Goldsmith's masterpieces live.

Apes was followed by yet another masterpiece, Elmer Bernstein's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, at #17 . The delicate beauty of Bernstein's score could have easily been wiped out by a careless use of sound effects, so the concert's producers made the admirable choice of playing the score's main theme over a wonderfully edited montage/summary of the classic film, telling the film's story in music and images.

Another surprising but well deserved choice was #16, Franz Waxman's marvelous score to SUNSET BLVD. The final scene was screened beginning with the cop at Norma's mansion calling the coroner (interrupted by Hedda Hopper on the other line), leading to the score's final cue, "The Comeback," which includes Sunset's three main themes -- the marching rhythm for Max, Joe's wry motif, and Norma's tango, presented in its most glorious rendition.

The next four scores were only featured in brief snippets. #15, OUT OF AFRICA, was somewhat of a surprise, especially since Goldfinger would have been a better representation of John Barry 's impact on film scoring, but it was still nice to have the composer represented. #14 was the first John Williams score on the list (I had expected the composer to dominate the program more than he ultimately did), and E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL was an extremely well deserved entry. One of the most welcome entries on the list was Max Steiner's KING KONG at #13 , the score which practically invented film music. Mauceri's hints about score #12 were confusing and misleading, leading one to expect a space travel movie, so when the distinctive opening notes of Bernard Herrmann's superlative VERTIGO score were played I breathed a sigh of relief (I was afraid it might be Apollo 13). Vertigo was an especially welcome choice because though the film is critically revered and the score is remarkable, it's not the kind of beloved Hollywood classic score or film one would have expected to fill the list.

The first half of the evening ended with a performance-to-picture of "The Duel," "The Victory" and "Epilogue," the climactic cues from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, score #11 . The Technicolor imagery looked especially glorious on the Hi-Def screen, though at times the sound effects track threatened to overwhelm Korngold's beloved score.

After the intermission, Mauceri and the orchestra returned to present pieces from three scores in rapid succession. From the hints, the irritating people sitting behind me inexplicably guessed City Slickers as #10, but it turned out to be HIGH NOON, Dimitri Tiomkin's only entry on the list. Jerry Goldsmith made a welcome return with #9, CHINATOWN , and the big screen monitors spotlighted the trumpet soloist as he performed Goldsmith's haunting theme, followed by a rousing version of Elmer Bernstein's classic THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN for #8 .

Last summer saw the deaths of three of Hollywood's most respected and beloved composers -- Goldsmith, Bernstein and David Raksin, whose immensely popular LAURA made the list at #7 , with a performance of Raksin's classic, elegant theme.

Mauceri described the score to #6 as evoking the sound of a heartbeat, and John Williams' classic JAWS was represented by a lengthy clip beginning with the unforgettable scene of Roy Scheider shoveling chum off the side of the Orca, and encompassed "Barrel Off Starboard" and "The Great Shark Chase." The piece was well performed though again during certain moments the sound effects overwhelmed the music.

Another of the 1970s top boxoffice hits made the list at #5, as Mauceri's orchestra played themes from Nino Rota's THE GODATHER , as the video screens showed close-ups of the instrumental soloists. The medley from Godfather was a bit of a cheat as it included themes written by Rota for Godfather Part II , including the jaunty "A New Carpet" and the most beautiful theme from the series, "The Immigrant."

My own choice for the greatest score of all time earned the #4 spot, though instead of the expected shower sequence, the producers of the concert used Martin Balsam's murder as their sequence from Bernard Herrmann's PSYCHO , incorporating the cues "The Porch," "The Stairs" and "The Knife." The Balsam sequence featured a greater variety of music than "The Murder," and also lacked the prolonged violence and fleeting nudity of Psycho's most notorious scene.

A lengthy montage from LAWRENCE OF ARABIA accompanied a medley of Maurice Jarre 's popular score in the #3 slot, and though I would never have put this score on the list (especially above such superb scores as E.T., Planet of the Apes and Psycho ), it is a truly great film and a much better score choice than Jarre's pop hit Dr. Zhivago.

By this time, the two top choices were pretty obvious, both "monumental" films in Mauceri's words. #2, GONE WITH THE WIND , began with a rendition of the classic "Tara's theme," with the camera focusing on the soloists, and continued with a performance-to-picture of Vivien Leigh's Part I closing sequence, featuring the cue "I'll Never Be Hungry Again!"

#1 was, blessedly, not Titanic or Gladiator (unkindly, I pictured James Horner at home, weeping and feeding Prokofiev sheet music into his Xerox), but John Williams' original STAR WARS , which was an extremely respectable choice for the top position -- a great score by a great composer, the score that bridged the Golden and modern ages, the score that helped revive the tradition of orchestral Hollywood film scoring, and a score which was a pivotal element in making a classic film a classic. "Use the Force" and "The Thorne Room" were shown, but unfortunately the sound effects for the battle sequence were mixed so loudly that the music was virtually inaudible, and one would have thought Ben Burtt was in the booth himself supervising the mix at gunpoint.

Despite the occasional overbearing sound effects, it was an impressive group of scores (with no score more recent than 1986 -- frequently these sorts of lists feature recent works too prominently) and an outstanding concert, the best film music performance I've seen since David Newman led a Sundance benefit concert in the late '80s which featured such glorious themes as Body Heat, Spartacus, and Touch of Evil .

The following is a recap of AFI's 25 Best:

.html Hooray for the circularists cause! Although I don't see any real  push for it in this one scene, I hope there is nothing in the new comics that contradict the circular theory.

What are the non believers to be called? Squarists?

          Long live the circle!

Hey guys. Its been Hell but me and my family are doing much better
than a lot of people down here. We were without power for almost a
month. My Wife,Son and Mother-in-law were away for 2 1/2 weeks of it.
Which was best. The chaos is starting to die down and some sense of
normal is slowly coming back. The destuction is very sureal at times
and many areas remain closed off. The area I used to deliver ice cream
to is shown in the looting footage CNN was so fond of showing. Yes, I
went to that Winn Dixie 3 times a week and the Circle Food Store that
is shown daily in that Red Cross ad. is also a painful reminder of my
route. My company has taken care of me though and we are in good
shape. Seth will finally go back to kindergarten Oct. 3rd and I am
riding with other salesmen who's areas have sprung back to life as
power is restored. I picked up my phone as I have daily since the
storm and couldn't beleive I finally had a dial tone tonight! I look
foward to catching up with you all and being filled in on all I've
missed in the "APE" world I love so much. The good Dr. Zaius Davis has
          returned home.

Welcome back John "DrZauis". I must say that watching all those daily

I read it when I was scanning it but don't recall enough of the story to provide a good summary. Basically it ignored the 4 existing sequels and picked up some time after the original film. Taylor and Nova have founded a colony in or on the other side of the Forbidden Zone and Cornelius needs Taylor's help with something and goes looking for him with his son. There's a big battle between the humans and the apes, but other than that I don't remember much more about it.

Some of you may have an earlier all-lowercase version of this font
that I made years ago. It now has uppercase letters, a full set of
numerals, accented vowels, and LOTS of extras in place of the rarely
used characters. If you try it, please let me know what you think.

I just put in my order at my local comics shop for the new comics due in
December. When I asked the guy about them he did not know about them at
all. I asked him if he had the new "Previews" magazine and then pointed
it out the ad to him him. He then said something I found interesting. He
said that had I not asked for them he probably would not have ordered
any. Also, since I was specifically asking for them, he would probably
order 5 sets, not just the one.

I suspect that many other shop owners would follow the same or similar
philosophy. Therefore, if anyone was just going to wait around and get
them once they hit the shelves, it would be a good idea to specifically
ask for them. Not only does it gaurantee you get a copy (if the shop
owner was not going to order them), but it also significantly increases
the amount of orders for the comic as a whole.

I just wanted to thank Greg, Hunter, Neil, and Kass for all there hard
work on the Return to the Planet of the Apes cards. It was great to
check on the UK issues I had missed on Hunter's site since Katrina and
find these cards ready to download. They are just as good as the other
sets and capture that 70's nostalgia perfectly. I also had 4 UK issues
to read last night. Thanks for keeping up with these. I am also pretty
sure that those two slackers who keep us hanging for new comic
chapters for weeks at a time must have at least shared a panel or two
in my absence. :) Come on brother. Hook a brother up. The last
chapter I saw was 46 for "Within" and page 8 for "Going Home". If I
missed anything else of note in the last month or so would you mind
sending to me also? Thanks guys.

I was really fortunate. I spent a week helping a friend of mine from
the tattoo shop remove all of his families stuff from their home.
They live less than 15 min. away and got 6 feet of water in their
home. They lost everything. All of their music equipment, clothes,
photo albums, their daughters toys, gone. From one day to the next
the mold slowly took over what was once a beautiful home. Its painful
because so many people so close to us have nothing. I sometimes feel
guilty and dare not complain about the time without power or the
other minor problems we've faced. The size of the destruction is
still hard for me to comprehend. I drive through the city to the
parts that have reopened and look down from the freeway at places I
passed everyday and can't recognize them. Cars sit ontop of cars and
buildings have entire walls and roofs missing. I guess its a comfort
food because we are selling an amazing amount of ice cream in the few
supermarkets that have reopened. Its all still very sureal. I hope
things work out for your sister. I can understand what she is going
through right now. I'm just glad that I haven't lost anybody. I know
a whole lot of people having to start over but nobody that was killed
          or seriously hurt.

still hard for me to comprehend.
