Yeah, but I'm a chimpette fan.

Let's hope if they make

There was other stuff from her kitchen as well.
But this was the cheapest. I guess no one
wanted it. I mean it's been five years. Not
sure how long since they bought it from Fox,
but . . . Maybe it wasn't that long. Maybe
Fox thought they might use them for a sequel . . .

They sold things off straight away after the
movie.
It was set up to be a merchandising
smorgasboard. But of course the props actually went the same way as the
other merchandise.
I still bought a lot of the toys and stuff
at first but I regret doing so.
However this may be a case of everyone
throwing stuff away and the little that remains might just be worth something in
50 years. I'll be 90 then!

Yeah, or not. I got the two of the giant Ari 6 x 4'

could always use them as home theater decorations.
The great thing about the film crew cap and T-shirt is
they just say Planet of the Apes. Not which POTA.

have to say is that you've reconsidered POTA 2001 entirely and now
believe that it is a whole lot better than those old stale 60's and
70's ape flicks. (Apologies to those that DO feel this way.)
Regarding the 2001 merchandise, I do have all the novels and will
eventually get to reading them. A few people have stated that the
novelization of the 2001 movie is better than the movie itself, and
that the 2 'prequel' novels feature a good setup story that leads to
the events of 2001. I've got a few of the action figures too, but you
can bet that that is only because they were dirt cheap. Like others
have mentioned, the stuff with only the logo is great, although I
haven't got any myself. (Would like one of the caps someday).

.htmlYup.
Although I did not think this issue was any thinner than previous
issues, I did notice that I read it cover to cover in 2 days. It
normally takes 5 or 6 days for me to finish it. While some have
complained that the offbeat article on how to make a Gorilla holster
was unnecessary, I enjoyed it just as much as the other articles. Not
that I'll ever, build one, but this is exactly the kind of stuff that
you can only find in an Ape fanzine. I hope that they continue to add
these kinds of 'build it yourself' articles in the future. Perhaps a
primer on creating latex molds. Hints and tips for building and
painting the Aurora/Polar Lights ape models. Even better, how to build
an Icarus from scratch!
I have no idea who was that brit celebrity that was interviewed. But
that's OK too since I think interviewing even common fans like
ourselves is interesting. Always eager to find out why others are as
intrigued by POTA as I am. Interviews with many of the fans right here
would be interesting. How about "A day in Neil Fosters POTA studio."?
No the only complaint I have about Simian Scrolls is that I have to
wait 6 months for an issue, and then I read it so quickly, only to
start the 6 month wait yet again.

That's a very good question.
His fear of humans stems from his
prejudices, caused by a knowledge of the past.
Would he behave differently to an alien -
maybe one that looked more like an ape?

to tie all the original characters together without compromising the
story for the sake of having them included. The art is great. Still
think it would look better in the classic black and white (and what's
up with the reporter's bride of Frankenstien hair?) but I was very

being made. I now have a bunch of toys, t-shirts, books etc. in
my "Apes" collection that are worth about 1/4 of what I paid for

break away from the evil hold George Lucas had on my wallet once my

.html I am really loving Tom Fowler's art for the Caesar storyline in issue
#3 of the new "Revolution" comic. I hope the twisted darkness and
emotion of the black and white pencils is not lost once they are
colorized. He has a unique style that fits Caesar's rage very well. It
is going to suck to have to wait till issue #3 to get more of his
vision of "Planet of the Apes". I think his art could attract the
current "Slipknot" listening, skateboard riding, raging against the
system breed of comic book fan. Kids who wouldn't normally be excited
or interested in the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. <.html

.htmlThese comics are set to premiere on December 7th, but I believe that
they may even start hitting the shelves of comic stores a week or two
earlier. BUT that will only happen if your local store decides to
order them.
So it's important for you to drop into your local comic store NOW and
make sure they order them. Tell them they can find it in the latest
issue of PREVIEWS which is the industry distribution that comic
sellers use to determine the availability of comics from one month to
another.
Since this is a new comic, a lot of vendors may skip it simply because
they do not know about it ahead of time. (The local guy here did not
know about it despite having the previews magazine right next to him.
I pointed it out, and asked him to order a set for me. He was not only
glad to do that, but he said he would order 4 or 5 since he now knew
about them.)
And, you'll be proud to know that this is an all-Canadian effort, eh!
(Ty Templeton is working out of Toronto, and I met Tom Fowler here in
Ottawa.)

.htmlMy take on it is that Zauis' fear of Taylor as immediately
attributable to his knowledge of the history between men and apes. He
genuinely feared man because of his destructive nature. This is just
to say that he did not fear him because he was different per se, so we
really can't do more than guess what his impression would be if an
alien suddenly appeared. But at least there was the possibility that
an alien would not be treated as he treated Taylor an the rest of the
astronauts.
Seeing as we can presume that Zauis did not grow up watching 50's sci-
fi B movies with a myriad of alien invasions, perhaps he would have
embraced them with open arms.

Again I am
dumbfounded by the lack of conversation this has generated.
OK - I'll go
out on a limb here.
This is the
best published (or NEARLY published) POTA comic I have read.
WHY?
Well, the Marvels were good, but hey we have DVDs now
and we can watch the movie so they have been superceded. Yes, it's good to
see the comics with their inclusion of unfilmed script elements....but they
don't give us much new.
So what about
the Marvel originals?
Well.....WHAT ABOUT THEM? Yes, TERROR was
great, but on the whole the rest of the stuff was pretty much talking monkeys,
and even TERROR went down the shitter quickly.
SO - when's
the last time a POTA comic (just forget about the POTA2001 ones, they don't
cont! Sorry Elaine!) actually gave us an original story that used POTA
characters? Yup - Marvel gave it a quick try wuth that pre-Battle one
(what was it called and what happened in it Neil?), but it was a bitt silly
eh?
And there was
the ADVENTURE comics' "GHOST OF BRECK" - gee, that was all class!
;)
But here we
have a well written story set between Conquest and Battle, including all the
characters, written by fans, that actually respects the originals enough to give
them a nod too! This is just amazing!
I love the
MAGAZINE COVER. Did you see the script font they use in the top right
corner? Very clever.
And they must
have thought about preservation - ie the safe the comic is placed in would
probably protect the issue for 2000 years (otherwise it would
disintegrate).
Of course it
seems to suggest Zira and Cornelius will be born after Conquest - but is it the
same Zira and Corn? Maybe not.....
I think we
are very lucky to have these guys doing such a great job.
Michael

This is a great teaser! I am
begining to think that they may be able to tie all the original characters
together without compromising the story for the sake of having them
included. The art is great. Still think it would look better in the
classic black and white (and what's up with the reporter's bride of
Frankenstien hair?) but I was very impressed.

Neil,
Thanks for the strips! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to comment.
I always look forward to these strips and I was not disappointed with the latest. The details in these panels are always impressive.
If I'm understanding it correctly, the 2nd panel is caused by the influence from the 1st panel?
Thanks again, Neil & Michael! Look forward to the next strips!

Beneath made slashfilm.com's Top 10 Sequels of All Time
They did however say it was the only one on the list not
better than the original.
I've always thought of BENEATH as among the worst of sequels. It's so crude next to the original.
-- Rory
Everything about a sequel says cashing in on the success of the original. Almost always, the magic of the first film is gone. What we get are story lines
that push further towards incredulity, the absence of the original stars, and a movie that will only look good when compared to part 3. But there are those rare occasions when the second installment equals or even
surpasses the original.
This list is ordered by how good the sequel is as compared to the original. To be considered for this list, the sequel has to build on the storyline of the first film. Therefore, From Russia With Love was excluded
because all James Bond movies are essentially self-contained. The same is true with other franchises, like Batman, or Spiderman, where the pre-established familiarity of the hero is the link between the installments.
1. The Road Warrior (sequel to Mad Max) – Easily the best sequel. Mad Max is B-movie fare. The Road Warrior is arguably the best action movie ever made.
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (sequel to The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring) - The Fellowship of the Ring is a tease, because you know what's coming in the next installment, making a skirmish
with some Orcs in the woods seem ho-hum. The Two Towers deliveres on the promise of epic battles against the hordes of evil.
3. Dawn of the Dead 1978 (sequel to Night of the Living Dead) – Dawn of the Dead isn't really better than Night of the Living Dead, but it's equally good in different ways. After that, Day of the Dead is a let
down.
4. T2 (sequel to The Terminator) – Though not as clever as The Terminator, T2 makes good use of its larger special effects budget, and gives us the catch phrase, "I'll be back."
5. The Godfather Part II (sequel to The Godfather) – Part II is just as good as The Godfather, and if the sequels were judged against each other, this would take the top spot. The Godfather Part II is the only sequel
to ever win an Oscar for Best Picture, an amazing feat.
6. The Bride of Frankenstein (sequel to Frankenstein) – While Dracula, The Mummy, and The Wolf Man all started their downward slides in their sequels, The Bride of Frankenstein lurches into greatness. Son of
Frankenstein is the first step on the road to meeting Abbott & Costello.
7. The Empire Strikes Back (sequel to Star Wars) – George Lucas keeps the story interesting by adding a startling revelation and better special effects. After this, all Star Wars films come from an Ewok's ass.
8. Toy Story 2 (sequel to Toy Story) – Pixar doesn't seem to know how to make a bad movie. Even their sequels are as good as the originals. Shame on Disney for creating straight-to-video knock offs of their feature
films.
9. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (sequel to Planet of the Apes) – The first movie on the list that isn't as good as the original. Still, seeing the ruins of New York takes the step that everyone wants to see after
the conclusion of the original.
10. Evil Dead II (sequel to The Evil Dead) – Poking fun at itself is a good move that keeps this from being a note-for-note repeat of the first film. But II misses the straight up scariness of the original.

I was disappointed in Beneath, it just went in a direction I didn't care for. I thought the overall quality of the movie was more like a B movie, not nearly as good as the original. Elaine

Well that's the golden rule isn't it - always keep
'em coming back for more! Well, okay, that's the
golden rule for showbiz, but I'm sure nobody minds
me appropriating it for fanzines too.
In terms of the "lightweight" thing - I think I
can maybe see where you're coming from - in terms
of page count it's more or less the same as the
last few issues (give or take a couple of pages)
but I think it's probably that the latest issue
has a lot more pictures in it - the location
article for example is several pages but has more
pictures than text. Not that I'm complaining mind
you, as that was one of my favourite articles this
issue.
It's difficult to strike a balance - there are
people who love it all and would like to see every
issue being 300 pages long and weekly, while there
are other fans who are just about ready to lynch
us if there's a single page that doesn't appeal to
them - but that's fandom, and as always thanks to
Neil and everyone else who gave us feedback on the
latest issue.

Just to be thorough, send all of 'em in one big batch, if you please. I
know I'm missing all sorts of 'em. My email address is
patrickmichaeltilton@... (so don't be shy).
On another note (forgive the pun), I got my POTA TV music CD from
INTRADA yesterday, and it's magnificent. The only thing I don't like
about the product is the liner notes -- 80% of it is devoted to
irrelevant slagging of the TV show, rather than being about the MUSIC
that's on the CD. For the most part, I really like Eric Greene's book,
but he was the wrong choice to do the CD's liner notes. It should've
been about the music, and it wasn't.
I wrote a longer rant about this at the Yahoo "FRIENDS & FUGITIVES"
group, so I'll cut it short here.
Ciao,

Also at this very moment Greg P is busy
(when isn't he ?!) converting the Within
strips to PDF files so they will be easier to print etc. Once they are ready
they will be uploaded to the files either here or on the DG Photos group depending on how much space we have

The Linda interview has some interesting moments as well, especially

being in the plans of Fox!

Just to be thorough, send all of 'em in one big
batch, if you please. I
know I'm missing all sorts of 'em. My email
address is
patrickmichaeltilton@... (so don't be shy).
On another note (forgive the pun), I got my POTA
TV music CD from
INTRADA yesterday, and it's magnificent. The only
thing I don't like
about the product is the liner notes -- 80% of it
is devoted to
irrelevant slagging of the TV show, rather than
being about the MUSIC
that's on the CD. For the most part, I really like
Eric Greene's book,
but he was the wrong choice to do the CD's liner
notes. It should've
been about the music, and it wasn't.
I wrote a longer rant about this at the Yahoo
"FRIENDS & FUGITIVES"
group, so I'll cut it short here.
Ciao,
Patrick

not complaining either, great article indeed. I also like the interviews,
especially the Paul Williams one. He really is a nice guy isn't he? The
Linda interview has some interesting moments as well, especially the
couple of big hints she gives about a new Apes movie definitely being in
the plans of Fox!
Where can I get those back issues again?
I'd like to read those articles too!

Yeah, I like the ones I get all the time saying they're representing someone who needs to transfer millions of dollars into the US and I can help.
