Great! Now that I'm a millionaire I'll finance the special edition DVDs of all the APES movies and dig up all that lost footage. Fox won't have to pay for a thing, 'cause I've won the
Australian lottery!

OK, yesterday (that's two Beatles song titles
already) I preordered the new POTA comic "Revolution on the POTA". The order
deadline was Oct. 15 but my local shop hadn't sent their orders for Oct. in yet,
so there's still time. They also said they'd "evaluate" the title for ordering
more copies. So it definitely doesn't hurt to rattle some chains at comic shops.
I can't believe it's been 15 years since the
Adventure comics series. Obviously that wasn't a complete artistic success but
it was the first step in bringing back the Apes. A re-imagination, a
30th anniversary, etc. later it feels like coming full circle. - - -

*** Hmmm... maybe you aren't aware of this, but when you (or I,
actually) go to that WITHIN file in the Files section, the only thing
there is a 15 KB Chapter00.gif file called "Latest Chapter Message"
and that message says:
PLEASE ENQUIRE ON THE GROUP FOR AVAILABILITY OF THE LATEST STRIP.
Beneath the box surrounding this sentence, on the left side, it says:
WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES [copyright sign] 2005 Neil FOSTER &
Michael WHITTY
and in the lower right side it says TO BE CONTINUED...
... and this gif has been there every time I've ever tried to go to
the Files section to see this comic that everybody here's been ooh-
ing and aah-ing about, 'cuz they get it emailed to 'em when they ask
nicely.
You know I dig your POTA art, Neil, and I've been asking nicely,
haven't I? Well, I've just gone to the Files section again, and that
damned gif is still there TAUNTING me. TAUNTING me, I say!
The link you've provided just doesn't have the goods on it. At this
point, I'm prepared to just wait till "WITHIN" is a finished product,
and then I'll send Mike some dough through PayPal and pay for an
actual in-my-hands comic book, the way I did for "BEWARE THE BEAST",
and then I'll finally get to see Victor Buono in all his Fat Man
glory, as drawn by our illustrious illustrator, Neil Foster.
This, mind you, is the ONLY reason I haven't contributed any
discussion of "WITHIN" of late -- because I CAN'T SEE THE DADBLASTED
THING!!! Nobody'll send 'em to me, and when I'm given a link to it,
it ain't THERE, I tell ya!
As Charlie Brown used to say when Lucy pulled the football out of the
trajectory of his kicking foot:

For space reasons the files are in the Photos group, one of the sub-groups that was set up to handle files beyond the Yahoo-imposed links. At over 4 megs for nearly all the strips issued to date, Neil thought it
best to put the files there. I imagine that Neil hasn't yet fixed the home page links, which linked to the older files he and I put on the main group, which were a little less organized. If your a member of the
Photos group, just go over there, check out the files section and look for the Within folder.
If you're not a member of the Photos group, what are you waiting for? An invitation?

Neil,
You should
spend your time more wisely (ie either planning or completing the rest of
WITHIN!). ;)

Thanks for helping out Dario. Patrick I have also sent you the latest 2
strips (49 & 50) so now you have plenty to read (and comment
on!)

Got the Intrada POTA TV show CD today. Very nice packaging, but guess what, folks? The linear notes have been written by Eric Greene, who once again hawks his book. He writes a pretty good apology
for the show, though I doubt some of you TV show fans will appreciate it much. As for the music, well... it's in mono, and that's too bad, but it sounds better on this CD than it does in the episodes on
the shows. I think most of you will be very pleased.

Thinking
maybe we should add some text to early Going Home.
Where the
dude says "remove the body" we should say "and burn it with the
others".
That prevents
Burke from seeking to find Al's body/bury it.
I agree P 17
has to go - we'lll utilise it later.
So 18 becomes
17 and 19 becomes 18.
Do you have
the script for p16 somewhere and I'll get to re-writing?
Might add
some text to the final panel where Burke is with a
skeleton...

Hi
John.
All I
can say is "D'OH!!".
And lucky I
didn't reveal TOO much!
When you see
that panel I am referring to I think you'll agree that it begs for a smart-ass
one-liner from Pete. i mean he's already way out of character to - having
murdered a gorilla to gain favour with the human militants who takw clothing
trophies from their kill (something I wish I could explain with another
character saying "that's not like you Pete", but I can't because Alan is dead
and Galen is getting the living crap beaten out of him "back at the
ranch"). I can actually hear some of the hard core TV Show fans saying
"there's no way Pete would do that". Oh well, the idea of Going Home is
to induct old fans into the new TV Show environment which is a whole lot
more like the movies than the TV Show.
We are going
to wait to share with the group until after the new "REVOLUTION" comics are
done.
Who knows -
by then they might be "Coming soon at your news stand!".
Don't forget
too John, not so long ago I offered to share the entire plot with the group and
share pages/frames as they were drawn, getting feedback along the way and
essentially wrining the comic with the group - but nobody seemed
interested!
Oh - and by
the way - had you been injured or lost your house I was ghoing to show you ALL
the new pages! How ironic! :)

I am a big fan of the changes you guys have made to the "formula"
format of the TV show. Its what those characters and ideas need if
they are to find an audience today. That is why I am so excited by
Tom Fowlers art for the "Revolution" comic. I think todays breed of
Slipknot listening, skateboard riding comic fan will be intrigued by
the stylized intense rage he is bringing to the ape revolt.
When I brought the copy of "Beware the Beast" you sent me to my
local comic shop it got a lot of attention and people who were not
huge "Planet of the Apes" fans were all very impressed and enjoyed
the story. Many of them saying things like "I always thought those

Planet of the Apes could find new fans if updated by people like

*** Hmmm... maybe you aren't aware of this, but
when you (or I,
actually) go to that WITHIN file in the Files
section, the only thing
there is a 15 KB Chapter00.gif file called
"Latest Chapter Message"
and that message says:
PLEASE ENQUIRE ON THE GROUP FOR AVAILABILITY OF
THE LATEST STRIP.
Beneath the box surrounding this sentence, on the
left side, it says:
WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES [copyright sign]
2005 Neil FOSTER &
Michael WHITTY
and in the lower right side it says TO BE
CONTINUED...
... and this gif has been there every time I've
ever tried to go to
the Files section to see this comic that everybody
here's been ooh-
ing and aah-ing about, 'cuz they get it emailed to
'em when they ask
nicely.
You know I dig your POTA art, Neil, and I've been
asking nicely,
haven't I? Well, I've just gone to the Files
section again, and that
damned gif is still there TAUNTING me. TAUNTING
me, I say!
The link you've provided just doesn't have the
goods on it. At this
point, I'm prepared to just wait till
"WITHIN" is a finished product,
and then I'll send Mike some dough through PayPal
and pay for an
actual in-my-hands comic book, the way I did for
"BEWARE THE BEAST",
and then I'll finally get to see Victor Buono in
all his Fat Man
glory, as drawn by our illustrious illustrator,
Neil Foster.
This, mind you, is the ONLY reason I haven't
contributed any
discussion of "WITHIN" of late --
because I CAN'T SEE THE DADBLASTED
THING!!! Nobody'll send 'em to me, and when I'm
given a link to it,
it ain't THERE, I tell ya!
As Charlie Brown used to say when Lucy pulled the
football out of the
trajectory of his kicking foot:
"AAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!"

We start year two of the Marvel UK project with a blockbuster of an issue. Not only do you get a 10-page chapter of the continuing adaptation of Escape From the Planet of the Apes and the usual letter column, you
also get a 10-page interview with Bill Blake and Paula Crist, who dressed up as Cornelius and Zira (respectively) for public appearances. It's been a while since we've had an article, let alone one this long. In
fact, this is only part 1, with the conclusion appearing next week.

I was living in Aberdeen, Scotland, when this issue was originally released. Although my family lived there for nearly a year, I only found out about the weekly comics fifteen weeks before we left. This is the last
issue I bought. When issue 54 came out, I was back in Louisiana and thoroughly miserable.

No - I love
it.
I just don't
like it now I'm all grown up.
I mean it
does have good bits, but it's like comparing Knight Rider or the A Team to Lost
or the Sopranos.
It was what
it was, and if the show were made now it would only last about 3 or 4
episodes.

That's right, on or about December 7th, the first of a six issue mini
series will be showing up in Comic shops. Called Revolution on the Planet of the
Apes, it's the story of Apes history after the events of Conquest. It will
feature characters from the classic movie series.
It's just

Any word on whether or not Fox will be finally break down and come out with
a really good anniversary/collectors set of all Five Planet of the Apes
films?

This was about 18 months
back. I spoke to someone close to Zanuck who explained he was devastated that people did not
like POTA2001 – Zanuck thought it had it all
(like you said, T!).
Apparently he wanted ideas from fans and I
gave a few and asked for others from the group.
There is just too much POTA going on
(toys, comics, more toys, trading cards) for there not to be something on the
horizon (and I mean OTHER than the 40th Anniversary stuff). Fox is testing the waters to see if the
waters are still radioactive from the fallout of POTA2001!
What did they learn?

Not a thing that I can see. But here are some thoughts.
A. Don't make a joke out of it. Laughs = Failure.
B. Don't let the witting suffer for the sake of FX.
C Don't hire anyone for the lead you couldn't see as Moses.
D. If you're going to have a battle don't make it look like
it was choreographed by the Batman TV series guys.
E. Never, ever, move up the release date on the editor.
F. Hire a director with enough respect for the material
to fight for it. Something Burton definitely
lacks.

OK here's an idea they can have for free. Rather than do a remake, why not
do one set say right after Cesar dies. Answer the question once and for all; did
Cesars trip to the forbidden city and his release of the humans change the
future that Taylor entered? We already know that the revolution of the apes was
moved up by the apeonauts coming back through time, so answer the damn question.
Is there an Ape/Human alliance? Are there other mutants who aren't so willing to
sit in their radioactive city and worship a bomb? Did the bomb actually wipe the
earth out in Beneath or did it just whack the east coast? There are so many
variant ape films one could do. Hell if they want, I'll write em a script based
on Freak, my fan fic. That would make a decent film!

That’s right T.
I have heard, too, that they will start
again, again. Which is good I think……depending……
The idea is that they start with something
good and they can pump out sequels regularly – that’s what I was
told Fox wants from POTA – A CASH COW! Like it used to be.
So with the “failure” of POTA
2001 it will be discarded as will the characters, except maybe in a cameo but
not as themselves (eg the “Zaius” in POTA
2001).
My suggestion was that they actually plan
a trilogy, then they can do these out of sequence if they want (eg film the
middle one first then the last one then the first – or any combination of
that). One you have a story written
logically and sequentially, then you can break it up and it can all still make
sense.
Anyway – that’s my
suggestion. The sci-fi fantasy
world digs trilogies. Then you can make
ANOTHER trilogy! And another!
AND LOTS OF TOYS!
Fox’s best bet is to hire someone
and let them do it – when THEY get involved it all goes to shit.
Michael

Yup – but I do believe
there is a way it can be done without totally screwing things.
They need to FOCUS on the STORY and the
CHARACTERS. THEN worry about the toys
and stuff.
POTA2001 was all about the toys and stuff….THEN
they threw in a story and characters (and don’t forget the big name actors!).

I must disagree. That's what screwed it up the first time.
And the sequels, in comparison to the original, sucked.
And the TV Show was worse. The thing was, the fans
would accept crap to see talking monkeys. There were
some interesting ideas there, but the studio refused to
throw Good money after Good, because they were cheap.
I'm watching The Godfather right now. I've seen it like 25
times. The reason I'm watching it now is, it's good, and
everything else on 100 plus channels is crap. And the
reason I bought the Planet DVD, and not the Boxed Set,
is because it's good, and the sequels are crap. I'll make
the tapes last until the 50th anniversary Extra Special
Super Luck Best Boxed Set. I'm not Fox's Chimp Chump.
Now if they want to go through their archives and dig out
something like, Lost Scenes, I might pony up for the 40th.

It would be nice if Fox made an original pota that was relevant to the times and focus on good plot and character development. Elaine

I do. The original script was two expensive for them to shoot.
So they brought in a couple of hacks and chopped it down to
size. Some may say . . "Well, I would hardly call the
co-writers
of such films as the Remake of Mighty Joe Young, The Beverly
Hillbillies and Star Trek The Undiscovered Country, hacks!"
Well, I would. My evidence? POTA2K1. Oh, and the
other
ones I just mentioned. Not that I consider Broyles to be
Shakespeare or anything. But his script in it's original form
was reported to have been good. And Burton budgeted it
at 200 million. So I call ponying up half price, cheap.
I'm not saying they couldn't have made a really good
movie for that 100 mil. I'm just saying they didn't.

The size the original art for Within is done at is 38cm by 12cm with 2

Did Fox learn their lesson from
POTA2001? All one has to do is see their later movies like "I, Robot" and
"Fantastic Four" to see the answer is "no". Burton has, I've liked all his
movies since ("Big Fish", "Charlie and the C.F." and I just saw "Corpse Bride").
That still doesn't mean Burton is appropriate for POTA but if he did come back I
don't think he would be Fox's indentured servant this time. Given the arrogance
of Fox execs I think that means he wouldn't be around long anyway.
POTA is at the mercy of Fox. It's doomed. -

Apparently he wanted
ideas from fans and I gave a few and asked for others from the
group.
There is just too
much POTA going on (toys, comics, more toys, trading cards) for there not to
be something on the horizon (and I mean OTHER than the 40th
Anniversary stuff). Fox is
testing the waters to see if the waters are still radioactive from the fallout
of POTA2001!
What did they
learn?

As far as the compilers being fans, I'm not sure as I've never seen their names before... As far as fan input, it
doesn't mention anything/anybody being from an APES fan club or an APES collector, etc. It could be that it is just another FOX product and that the APES followers weren't involved in it.

Revolution on the Planet of the Apes #1
Recommended by Jim Kuhoric
I am really excited about the launch of MR Comics' new series,
Revolution on the Planet of the Apes. Everything I have seen so far -
from their brilliant cover images to dazzling interior art - has
screamed "this is the real deal!" No super-fancy special effects
trying to cover up bad actors pretending to be angst-ridden
anti-heroes. No, this is old school, in-your-face "Chuck
Heston-approved" Planet of the Apes action! I can hear the haunting
soundtrack from the original film in my head looking at these
nostalgic images. The story begins in the city of San Diego in the
near future, ablaze with the flames of ape rebellion. Caesar is back,
and leading the way for the human-run planet to transform into a
warlike simian culture. All of the original movie characters are back
in two new stories per issue, including Cornelius, Dr. Zaius, Zira,
and Taylor. Classic sci-fi fans, join me in breaking out those Apes
DVDs and do your best Taylor impression with me - "get your stinking
paws off me you damned dirty apes!" But be sure you get your "stinking
paws" on this debut issue!
