That's something that has really looped my thinking about near time travel.

Are there two of you?  Red Dwarf has played with this quite a bit.  Anyone

interested is that sort of paradox should watch a movie called Primer.

That's what I think.  By going into the past the causal details changed.

But the Big Picture stayed the same.  Apes still took over Earth.

Different Cause -- Same Effect.

"They" should, save me a bloody fortune !! :)
Actually this as got me thinking about the state of capitalism in
POTA. Does ape city have some form of a capitalist economy( we see
the fruit stall in the first film, do we see money at any point? )
or is there an elemant of central planning. I'm thinking of some
kind of "free" food hand out like ancient Rome.

I don't believe so.  Cornelius is up for a raise.
Without money what would they raise?
His food allowance?  His Grape Juice
Plus quota? An extra shovel?  I don't
think so.  Maybe they all had credit.
It's such a small society they probably
don't even sign for it.  It's probably done
like a General Store in the Old West.
That's my take on it anyway.

I've seen it so many times the lines just jump out at me.
Speaking of which, it's going to be on again, on Sci-Fi at
midnight Tuesday night, which technically I guess would
be Wednesday morning, followed by The Good Seeds.
That's Central, so 1:00 Eastern.  Check your local listings.

It seems old comics are new again.
In addition to the new POTA comic
I've learned from the Buckaroo Banzai
Group that they are releasing a brand
new BB comic through Moonstone.
I don't read a lot of comics, but I thought
those who do might be interested.  There's
an interview with BB director W. D. Richter
about it at . . .

I think it's good that Sci-Fi shows the movies and shows as often
as they do.  They show them more than anyone else does.  FOX
Movies seems to show the new one more.  No doubt trying to get
more money out of it.  The only ones who'll buy it off them is
they themselves.  Sounds like a time travel conundrum.

They DO have a monetary system... Otherwise, Cornelius wouldn't have mentioned "being up for a raise"... Also, there was the fruit stand, but there was also the clothier, and it's certain that they weren't about to give those suits away for free...

And, in the TV series, gold is definitely a source of wealth to them... And, they mention the "rich apes in the government" as being the land owners, etc.

Nope, they have their money (wealth) system in place, otherwise how could there be rich apes and poor apes?

Actually this as got me thinking about the state of capitalism in
POTA. Does ape city have some form of  a capitalist economy (we see
the fruit stall in the first film, do we see money at any point)?
or is there an element of central planning. I'm thinking of some
kind of "free" food hand out like ancient Rome.

Yup. I don't know any better. I'm originaly from Mass. Your Sis
probably has the right idea! Things are getting better though. No
more eating MRE's but everything is short handed so even Taco Bell
closes by 8pm. Wal-mart is no longer 24hrs. Its strange. Things slowy
begin to re-open. I now have the Miss. Gulf coast route of all things
and it is surprisingly busy. Only 5 stores directly on the beach have
not re-opened on my new route. My old French Quarter route still has
not began running. There is about 6 of my old stops that have been
getting service once in a while. Ice Cream seems to be a comfort food
because once power is restored the calls for service come rolling in.
New Orleans seems to be taking much longer to be up and running.
Still power issues and lots of damaged areas that I still can't see
ever being the same. All things concidered, I am doing well and plan
on staying in this pool of filth I now call home.

Really?  What did you call it before?
Just kidding.  But seriously, I have never
had any great desire to go there, even for
Marti Gras.  to paraphrase what someone
once said in some movie or other . . .
I hate crowds, which is ironic, since I
love gatherings.

    Hi All;
I am part of the Yahoo MEGO group, and have dealt with Laurie
before. She is excellent to deal with. So, if you are interested in
the Astro-Apes, contact her. She does great work in casting, and
also sculps custom heads for MEGO figures.

I have to disagree.  I thought Ari's character was the most
developed of the entire cast.  Thade was a very one dimensional
character.  All snarl and growl.  You can't tell me all that was just
because Ari wouldn't go out with him.  There had to be more to it.
He did snarl and growl a lot, didn't he? I guess he just reminds me of many of the patients I have had throughout the years. I had high expectations regarding Ari's character since Helena Bonham Carter was playing the part. Elaine

Yes, that was the Kevin Smith film Clerks. Like I said I just don't
know any better. I miss Mass. sometimes. Boston has a lot more in
common with New Orleans than some might think, but I lived on Cape
Cod for many years and that is probably the greatest place to spend X-
mas on the planet and this time of year I miss it the most. I have a

I have a

I've told you, what you and Neil do together is fine as long as it
keeps producing these great comics but maybe you should stop sharing
the details. We get it. Your "happy" together and that's great and
all, but a little discression is nice sometimes.

    Hi There Joe

    Welcome to the POTADG.

We have been hearing from Ty for the past week or so on various subjects and may I say I am absolutely knocked out that both of you give a crap about what the fans might think.

POTA has been treated like shit over the years (would you agree?) and it is CRITICAL to the franchise that people doing Action Figures, Comics etc are not just here to make a quick buck because that attitude is KILLING Planet of the Apes’ chances.

Personally, I am hoping to see CLASSIC POTA become a resurrected franchise (similar to the successful Robocop and Battlestar Galactica resurgence).  Am I getting ahead of myself or are you hoping for the same?

    Michael

    Thanks, glad to be here.

With regard to how PotA’s been treated over the years, it seems to me that people have approached it by moving away from all the things that made the movies so memorable in the first place.  Ty and I were adamant about remaining true not just to the material, but to the spirit of the material – not just the characters and situations but what they’re supposed to represent.

I think it’d be great to see PotA return in some form, so long as it was done well and not just an attempt to cash in on the name value.  BATTLESTAR’s a great example of taking something old and making it really fresh and relevant – far more so than its original, in fact, though that’s rare.

Great to know you have such interest in what the fans think as to
spend time talking in groups like this. When I first read about the
project and saw all the characters that where to be included in such
a short run story, I was quite skeptical. I thought these characters
were being included for the sake of having them all represented and
couldn't relate storywise without compromise. After reading
the "backstory" on the Mr. Comics site, you won me back. Was it a
delibirate effort to have all these main characters make an
appearance or is that just the way your story fell together from the
    begining?

Glad to know we won you back!

We didn’t sit down and deliberately say “Okay, we have to figure a way to jam EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in here!”  We just structured each book as a chapter of the main story and a backup.  Our main story takes place immediately post-CONQUEST, and the backups can take place anywhere.  So it just sort of flowed organically from those early choices.

The PotA universe is such a vast one, really epic in scope, so why wouldn’t we want to explore as much of it as possible?

Well, I wasn’t involved with the ROBO TV series – that was a separate deal.  In 1999 I was approached by a producer-director friend of mine by the name of Julian Grant, who had been asked by the company that held the ROBO rights to resurrect the character in a miniseries. So I and my writing partner at the time set about devising this monster eight-hour story called ROBOCOP: PRIME DIRECTIVES.  It suffered at time from a TV budget, but I’m mostly happy with it.  It got a fair amount of airplay on the SciFi Channel in the US , as well as overseas.

As for an APES revival series?  Anything’s possible, particularly with Hollywood being so remake crazy these days.  But first I think they have to let enough time pass for people to truly forget the Burton picture, which I don’t think anybody was happy with, including the filmmakers.

    Joe

Tom Fowlers art has to be the most exciting part of this project for
me. It is dark, twisted and like nothing we have seen in the POTA
universe to date. How was he lured to this project and is he a big
fan of the franchise? Or is his unique take on the POTA world because
it is an outside view. I truly believe his style will lure people who
are not fans and wouldn't normally give Planet of the Apes a chance.
Kids wearing Slipknot shirts skating to their local comic shops won't
normaly be looking for the latest Apes project.

I’m still working on issue five right now, so all I’m thinking about is bringing the story we’re telling now to a satisfying conclusion.  Beyond that, I dunno.  I think I’d like to explore other aspects of the APES universe, though, and not just the timeline I’m working with now.  I think of this as an anthology series, with lots of different stories.  So the next story, assuming that happens, probably wouldn’t even be called REVOLUTION ON . . .  for example.

I think we’re mostly sticking with what we know on the backups.  There aren’t any existing characters in that time period, so its tough to invent one who works AND tell a satisfying story in just five pages.  Then again, never say never.  It’s really Ty’s call, since he writes the backup stories.

I really dig the name “REVOLUTION ON…” – it really fits without trying as did the 4 sequels!

When I was a kid and I wrote POTA stories I named one “A Different Ship Lands On…..”.  I really could have done better!

I'd think NEW characters would be nicer to work with because you wouldn't have to work within preexisting ideas...

It’s funny, our first one hasn’t even hit the stands and that’s probably the single most asked question.  The answer is still “We have no idea.”  It’s nearly 100% dependent on how well the first six sell.  So get out there and tell all your friends.  Spread the word.  Go to your local comics retailer and tell them you want them to order the book.  It really does make a difference.

Yeah, Tom’s art is awesome, isn’t it?  We got him because Ty asked nicely, and I have blackmail photos.  Really, he couldn’t say no.

With respect to all, one of our goals on this book is to bring in people who might not necessarily be APES fans, and I think you’re right about Tom’s art being a crucial part of that.

Nope.  I’m a hobbyist 3D illustrator and animator, among other things, but I’ve never done professional comics art.  My hand drawing is rotten bad.  Why do you ask?

Tom Fowlers art has to be the most exciting part of this project for
me. It is dark, twisted and like nothing we have seen in the POTA
universe to date. How was he lured to this project and is he a big
fan of the franchise? Or is his unique take on the POTA world because
it is an outside view. I truly believe his style will lure people who
are not fans and wouldn't normally give Planet of the Apes a chance.
Kids wearing Slipknot shirts skating to their local comic shops won't
normaly be looking for the latest Apes project.

It would probably be harder to get readers to care about these new
characters they have no attachment to without spending a great deal
of time establishing the new characters. A luxury most comics can't
afford to take. Too much down time. I could be wrong.

That’s SO important.  We have actually done a few comics ourselves and the comment was made about “BEWARE THE BEAST” that its’ appeal as a comic book has a VERY limited audience…..

However the art is something EVERYONE (even my wife, who HATES PotA!) seems to admire (thanks Neil!).

I am proud as hell of it, publisher material or not!

It is great to see such heavyweight names involved – was this just a fluke or was it planned to get so many heavyweights involved?

Yeah, Tom’s art is awesome, isn’t it?  We got him because Ty asked nicely, and I have blackmail photos.  Really, he couldn’t say no.

With respect to all, one of our goals on this book is to bring in people who might not necessarily be APES fans, and I think you’re right about Tom’s art being a crucial part of that.

Well, as a 33yr. old kid in his Slipknot t-shirt who skates to his
local comic shop with his 5yr. old son, I have to say we are both
very excited and can't wait till the first issue finally makes it out
    to the stores.

I was checking out your website and I thought there was a new comic there that was also ILLUSTRATED by you – it was late and I’d had no coffee!

The advantage to working with a guy like Ty is that he has a LOT of heavyweight friends that he can call on.  And, uh, me.

I believe it – I’d have put my money on it!

And I think we all appreciate it too!

Believe it or not, Joe and I went back and forth on a couple of names, looking for the right rhythm and the right visual shape in the logo.  This ain't no "escape, pursuit and capture..." here.

I'm a firm believer that CHARACTER drives these stories.  The one main problem I always had with both the Adventure comics line, (And the TV series as well) was the missing characters from the main franchise.

Wow. Thanks! My Dad let me stay up and watch the POTA Tv show with
him when I was a kid and those are some of my most fond memories. I
truly enjoy getting to share POTA with my son and this new comic has
really got him excited. We even made iron-on t-shirts with Tom's art
on it. (he has one of your Batman inspired Face off too, Neil)

That comic, NIGHT, is drawn and painted by Attila Adorjany, who also does the art for our very first backup story.  He’s going to be a superstar, that guy.

I'm a firm believer that CHARACTER drives these stories.  The one main problem I always had with both the Adventure comics line, (And the TV series as well) was the missing characters from the main franchise.

That comic, NIGHT, is drawn and painted by Attila Adorjany, who also does the art for our very first backup story.  He’s going to be a superstar, that guy.

I'm on the schedule to illustrate the backup story for #6.

HOWEVER, I did lay out the first back up story (with gorgeous full colour finished art by Attila) and I design all the covers (with gorgeos full colour painting by Denis Rodier)

.html.html I'm not saying you're wrong, but look at it this way: Every one of the films had NEW characters that were introduced... They were ALL new at one point... Ursus was a NEW figure introduced in BENEATH, wasn't he? And Milo was NEW in ESCAPE...

You shouldn't just limit yourself to the same figures over and over, because creating scenarios for them just for the sake of having them (and their names) in there just isn't right either...

The films (great as they are) are limited... I mean there's only so many times you can tell a Zira and Cornelius story isn't there...

That's the one thing that WAS good about the TV series, they didn't try to showcase every existing character... They went ahead and created new ones... That's what you'll need too...

Yourself and others here keep saying how you want to make APES for today's audience, well showcasing characters from old films that these "SlipKnot" kids aren't going to watch anyway isn't the way to do it... If you want to get a new audience, you'll need to have original apes in there...

    Hey folks.  How's it hanging?

I'm here for a couple of minutes before I head back to Springfield/Simpson-land.  I'm sure you've been in fine hands with Mr. O'Brien.

Wow. Thanks! My Dad let me stay up and watch the POTA Tv show with

I'm on the schedule to illustrate the backup story for #6.

HOWEVER, I did lay out the first back up story (with gorgeous full colour finished art by Attila) and I design all the covers (with gorgeos full colour painting by Denis Rodier)

All of Seth's friends want shirts too, which is cool because I don't
think most of them had a clue about Planet of the Apes.

Grummet is currently exclusive to Marvel, and cannot wander from the yard.

Sorry...he did say yes to a cover at one point, and then BAM!  He falls prey to the Marvel exclusive contract.

Grummet's a great guy, and an old friend, and I saved his life in Korea, years ago, so he owes me.
