Check out this review of Jackson's KONG, and NO, T, you can't read it. It's only for those that have already seen the movie and especially those here that can't understand why I don't think
the movie is so great!

OK, here we go...
A Look at Peter Jackson's KING KONG!
By Andy Dursin
www.andyfilm.com
Growing up in the '80s, I became a huge "King Kong" fan through repeated viewings of both the original 1933 RKO classic and its less-dignified, though still entertaining, 1976 remake. In between those
decades, Kong resurfaced in a silly Rankin/Bass cartoon and an affiliated Toho Studios Japanese "Kaiju" spin-off -- not to mention his immortal battle with Godzilla in the early '60s.
Therefore, I have no problem at all with Peter Jackson remaking KING KONG
for a new generation -- especially not when you see the loving care that Jackson applied to the remake: references to Fay Wray, Marian C. Cooper and RKO Pictures pop up early on. Later in the movie, Max
Steiner's original '33 themes are performed by the pit orchestra as Kong is introduced to the city of New York (conducted by Howard Shore, whose original score to this version was tossed out at the last minute),
while the goofy tribal dance from the Cooper-Schoedsack classic is reprised by dancers on-stage. The end credits even appear against a backdrop with the 1933 title card fonts -- elements all respectful of the filmmaking
milestone that was the very first "King
Kong."
Naturally, Jackson's movie has the benefit of new technology behind it: this is a film packed with visual delights, from the authentic recreation of Depression-era NYC, to the amazing animation and
"performance" of Kong himself. Articulated to a degree by Andy Serkis (Jackson's Gollum cohort) and marvelously rendered on-screen, this is a Kong that's a far cry from the stilted Rick Baker suit in
Dino DeLaurentiis' 1976 remake and ranks with the most awe-inspiring technological achievements that special effects wizards have produced throughout the decades.
So, there's no problem at all with Jackson's new film, right? A remake respectful of its predecessor with sensational visuals ought to be something to be admired and savored for generations to come, no?
Sadly, not everything in Jackson's sprawling, overlong, three-hour (!) opus matches its good intentions and aesthetic qualities. This is a movie that plays like the kind of "Director's Cut" studios
indulge filmmakers on DVD, bulging with superfluous details and side characters with no pay-off, and scene after scene that could have been sliced in half and been every bit as effective -- if not more so for their
brevity.
Since the original movie's premise needs little introduction, it's best to dissect the alterations Jackson and his collaborators (writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) have applied to this version. Here,
leading man Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) is a playwright suckered into one of director Carl Denham's latest productions. Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) is a down-on-her-luck actress seeking a way out of the Depression,
and finds the opportunity of a lifetime despite the suspicious motives of Denham himself. All three, and a crew led by captain Thomas Kretschmann, find themselves on Skull Island, a prehistoric environment teeming with
dinosaurs, giant insects, wild natives and one giant ape named Kong...
One of the first things you'll realize about Jackson's "King Kong" is that -- after a marvelous beginning in an early '30s Big Apple -- the film chugs along at a snail's pace. The journey to
Skull Island finds Jackson spending minute after minute on extraneous side characters and details; unlike his "Lord of the Rings" adaptations, though, the source material here doesn't beg for a three-hour
treatment, with one especially infuriating subplot involving Jamie Bell's young seaman and his older, wiser superior (Evan Parke). Their relationship doesn't add anything to the finished film, and could have
been jettisoned without any detriment to the central drama.
Over a third of the movie is over before Kong appears, and naturally there are several "jackpot" set-pieces, including a brontosaurus stampede and a chase with raptors (and later, a pair of T-Rexes) not far
behind. Regrettably, the movie then stalls out again with sequences that run on too long: the "spider pit" scene in particular is especially bloated (and atrociously spotted with inappropriate music from a
mostly subdued, ultimately forgettable James Newton Howard soundtrack). Eventually, Jackson gets Ann, Jack and Denham off the island and back to New York, but even there, every scene feels several beats off-measure: the
icy jaunt through Central Park with Ann and Kong is cute but ought to be over in half the time, and even the final battle on top of the Empire State Building (which Jackson wisely refrains from being overly bloody)
leaves you feeling like you've watched each and every fly-over of the bi-planes that eventually take Kong down.
Between the bloated running time, over-reliance on side details and minor characters, what one is left with in "King Kong" is a film where the viewer ultimately has little interest in its heroes. Watts looks
fetching and is effectively emotive in her encounters with the big ape, yet her scenes with Brody's Jack are confined to the first third of the movie -- something that detracts from any real chemistry between the
two. Brody himself looks as if he could have made for a perfect "everyman" kind of hero, but the script doesn't give him nearly enough to do. Worst of all is Jack Black's Denham: the movie clearly
didn't want to make him into the nefarious bad guy that Charles Grodin served up in the '76 version, and subsequently balances out some of the character's despicable behavior with comedic elements. Yet,
he's still unhinged, and the film ultimately doesn't come down hard enough on him: his reading of the movie's final line rings false because it's still Denham in this version who's truly responsible
for the tragedy of the final act.
By the time the would-be heart-tugging climax arrives, I felt more exhausted than moved by the 2005 "King Kong." This is a reverent and beautifully-made picture that nevertheless wears you down: after all the
running, shooting, shaking camera and muddled characterizations, it becomes apparent that Jackson's movie left its heart somewhere between here and Skull Island. (**1/2, 187 mins., PG-13).
Wow! Only 2 and a half stars! I at least gave it three!

It's here! The shocking conclusion to Marvel's adaptation of Escape From the Planet of the Apes. An ending so filled with heart-wrenching emotion that they needed extra
pages this week just to fit it all in. Not to worry letter column fans, those extra pages didn't crowd out your favorite feature. As an added bonus this week there is a full-page photo of Bradford Dillman and
Natalie Trundy. Next week we jump right in to the Conquest adaptation, with no Apesalyers or city-ships anywhere in sight. Greg <.html

We may return to it (the pun is intended),
but currently we are trying to wrap everything up. And the comics we have done are always
22 pages in length (that seems to be the industry standard….).
The void is being filled by MR COMICS. For the next 6 months (OR MORE WE HOPE!)
we all get POTA comics. Our
objectives ARE being met (that being POTA fans getting comics!), and it is
being done by a dedicated team who deserve all our support and attention.
Don’t worry, we will still be active.
The rest of GOING HOME (which is part 1 of
a trilogy) needs to be inked. The
next two parts need to be finished….but at the moment we are seriously
considering planning it then shelving it (only because we have a new story that
Neil and I are both incredibly excited about that we need to get started on…..ASAP!).

Had it been in one of our British tabloids I'd have had my doubts, but it was in The Scotsman which is a respectable, quality newspaper so I think it's a reputable source. And I'm not just saying
that because they're my former employers...
On the other hand, if they start running articles about "lost" episodes of the PotA TV show, I'd take it with a pinch of salt. ;)

Each APRIL FOOLS DAY the Canberra Times
will run a gag article. BUT –
they will, somewhere in that article, make a statement like “now look at
the first letter in each sentence!
APRIL FOOL!” and, of course, the first letter in each sentence
DOES spell APRIL FOOL.
Rags like “People Magazine”,
or “The Enquirer” – well, you would expect lies from them and
that’s why nobody with a brain takes them seriously…..because they
run articles like “My Dog Was Kidnapped and Impregnated By Aliens”.
Strangely enough I re-read that Scrolls
article, and the entire issue, 2 or 3 times over because I did not believe the
article.
Having done so, and believing in the
integrity of the crew at Scrolls, I concluded I must have somehow missed
something. Then I fought for the
integrity of “our good friends at Scrolls”. Silly me.
So I guess you can understand why I still
do not believe George Tuska drew the face of the ape
in a recent issue, and I guess you can understand why I can’t now believe
a word I read in Scrolls.
What’s worse is that instead of
accepting responsibility for having made a poor decision, the PUBLIC attitude
seems to be “come on now – it was just a joke”. Funnily enough I DO have an email from
Mr Ballard in my possession that states “we have really made a big
mistake here” and goes on to beg Neil and I to steer people away from
their (understandable) anger.
It’s really sad that I now read
Scrolls and wonder if these interviews REALLY took place or if someone is
taking the piss out of me.
But that’s OK – I’ll
still make sure our “good friends at Scrolls” get to preview new
comics and that they are “kept in the loop”. What else WOULD I do – warn people
that they are full of shit?
Michael

Very cool... But, to be on the picky side, Milo wasn't there when the troops were marching past their home... All I could think when I seen the drawing was "There they go, Dr. Zaius trotting along beside
them..."
But you could suppose that Milo may have been in another room when they first looked out the window... <.html

Merry Christmas fellow members, and PC be damned. It's always been and
hopefully always will be my favorite holiday! I wish everyone, even those who
don't celebrate it a happy and safe time. Let's look back at the year behind us
with wisdom and look at the year ahead with hope.
Take care, all!
The minstrel
fell! - but the foeman's chain Could not bring that proud soul under; The
harp he loved ne'er spoke again For he tore its' chords asunder; And said
"No chains shall sully thee, Thou soul of love and bravery! Thy songs were
made for the pure and free, They shall never sound in slavery."

Here's some news
that you are all bound to be happy about ;-)
Due to the amount
of files this busy group accumulates I have had to start
another new
subgroup!
You can now
find some of the group's Files at the Planet of the Apes DG Photos
2 group:
And
yes, you will have to join this group to access the files, sorry but it couldn't
be helped as this is the only way we can keep these files and the last thing we
would want to do is delete stuff when we run out of storage space because then
its gone forever!

Just in case you
may have missed this I thought I would just let everyone know that the DG
may not be available for a short time during
maintenance work this week being carried out by our friends at
Yahoo!
Here's what they
have advised:
Outage Advisories
Yahoo! Groups will be performing critical database
maintenance this week. During this maintenance work, 25% of groups will be
offline. Messages sent to affected groups during this interval will be queued
and delivered once the groups are back online.
The work is currently scheduled for Tuesday night, December
27th, from 9:00 PM until 2:00 AM Wednesday morning Pacific time (Wednesday
morning 5:00-10:00 AM GMT). However, there is a chance it may need to be delayed
until later in the week.

Okay now they have decided to change days:
The work is now scheduled for Wednesday night (in California),
December 28th, from 9:00 PM until 2:00 AM Thursday morning (Thursday
morning 5:00-10:00 AM GMT). However, there is a chance it may need
to be delayed until later in the week.

even mention this?
*** What Jakes ADDED to the screenplay/film in his novelization
regarding this Breeding Annex scene is important. Is it likely that
the people in charge of the Breeding Annex would just put males into
the female cages and ASSUME that they would mate with the females?
Isn't it likely that they would MAKE SURE that the insemination took
place? The raison d'etre of the Breeding Annex seems to be to
increase the population of Apes -- perhaps because they don't want to
rely on importation from Africa and Indonesia for this "product". By
breeding more Apes, they can make more money.
I mentioned what Jakes had added to the scene because it is rather
relevant. If you want to ignore it and allow yourself to assume that
Caesar might NOT have done the in-out with the coquette chimpette,
that's your option. I think it unlikely that the Breeding Annex
personnel wouldn't make sure. I think it more likely that they WOULD
be monitoring the situation, and that Caesar -- knowing this -- would
feel that he had to go through with it, to maintain the ruse.
Thus... it opens the door to the possibility that his firstborn child
would be borne by this OTHER female chimp, long before Lisa bore
Cornelius for him. It is THIS possibility that I would like to
exploit in my own POTA project. If Caesar has an "unacknowledged"
bastard child, then might not that child claim to be his heir,
especially when his "only" son Cornelius is deceased?
In past eras, when a bastard child was "acknowledged" by a King (or
Queen) as being of the Royal Bloodline, such an illegitimate child
became legitimatized, and could then become the next king --
especially if there were no other options, and the only other result
would be a civil war between distant cousins/rival claimants with
dubious genealogies. There's a subgroup of Oxfordian students of the
Shakespeare-Authorship controversy who believe that the Sonnets were
written by Edward de Vere (XVIIth Earl of Oxford) to the unnamed
Henry Wriothesley (Earl of Southhampton, the dedicatee of his two
narrative poems, "VENUS AND ADONIS" and "THE RAPE OF LUCRECE") --
where many of the sonnets in question are written by the Poet to
an "unacknowledged" Son: the heir to the throne of England. Not all
Oxfordians accept this sub-theory, but many do: that Southhampton was
really the bastard son of De Vere and Queen Elizabeth (the so-
called "Virgin Queen" who wasn't REALLY a virgin...). By writing the
poems, the Poet was presumably trying to get his own son to marry and
beget children of the unacknowledged royal line, and also urging the
boy's mother -- Queen Elizabeth -- to "acknowledge" him as her own
flesh-and-blood. Thus, "Shakespeare" would become the de facto
consort of the Queen, with their bastard son becoming the next king
of England. After Oxford died in 1604 -- Queen Elizabeth having died
just before that, with James VI of Scotland becoming James I of
England -- it was another 5 years before somebody 'acquired' the
sonnet sequence and published them in 1609. With none of the
characters named, it was all a big mystery as to WHO the "Dark Lady"
of the Sonnets might be... who the "Fair Youth" was... etc.
The notion that a nobleman had dreams (even delusions) of having his
own son become King of England -- due to having been seduced by Queen
Elizabeth years before, just as Venus seduced Adonis in the poem --
is quite controversial. Oxfordians are divided on it, some thinking
that the interpretation is valid, others dubious of it. If true, it
explains how the Author would've been forced into using a
pseudonym: "William Shake-Speare". The end of the Tudor Dynasty was
hanging in the balance...
... just as the "dynasty" of Caesar hangs in the balance when his
ONLY son and heir, Cornelius, winds up being murdered by Aldo --
obviously before Cornelius could've begotten a child himself. Caesar
hopes to change the future... but how CAN he if he has no heir? If he
and Lisa are able to produce another son (or daughter) to replace
their murdered son, then that would help to solidify the possibility
(he presumes) that the Future can be changed by his own dynasty's
efforts. Caesar knows that he himself will be dead many centuries
before the critical year -- "3950" -- will transpire. He can only
hope that his Heir will carry the torch of Change to prevent Doomsday.
But... if there's a rival claimant -- the child begotten in that
Breeding Annex -- who has a different view, perhaps... how might that
affect the situation?
Reason enough to bring up Jakes' novelization regarding that scene.

I guess I should weigh in here regarding Jackson's version of "KING
KONG". I thought it was terrific, and I'm kinda confused as to how
Rory can give it 3 stars and still hate it. I can understand hating a
1-star film or a 0-star film, but a 3-star film? If a film gets an A
(4-stars), it's generally considered top-notch. A 3-star film is like
getting a B -- above average, but not as good as an A. A "C" film, 2-
stars, would be average, at best. A 1-star film is like a "D" on a
test -- below average... but still not the worst. A 0-star film would
be like an "F".
How can Jackson's film be 3-stars, Rory, and still be worthy of being
hated by you?
If I had had the money & time to make a remake of "King Kong", I know
that I would've made a different film than the one Jackson made. But,
so what? It's obvious that he made the film that he was driven to
make. Others might quibble about the choices he made as director, but
it should all be weighed in the balance of the achievement overall.
Though I might've done certain things differently, I didn't mind the
choices he made. The first hour seems sluggish to some... but I
didn't mind it. I didn't mind having more of a set-up to the Skull
Island adventure -- it gave us the opportunity to get to know some of
the other guys on the ship, and helps to make us care about their
ghastly demises when they are killed. I also like the extended NYC
stuff in the beginning: the whole point of THIS version is that the
times the characters live in is summed up by one word: DESPERATION.
In the original, Denham needs to get a chick to be in his movie,
because audiences want to see a romantic element. And Ann Darrow is
hungry enough to steal an apple. Set against the backdrop of the
Great Depression, the original film rather underplays this sense of
underlying desperation.
Jackson purposely set his film in the same era... but that
necessitated depicting in fuller scope the Depression. It was a time
of severe desperation. I liked that he made Denham himself even more
desperate than the original one: if he fails with this new project,
then he's FINISHED. And, at the beginning of this version, he's on
the verge of having the plug pulled from this last chance project. He
can't afford to let that happen.
I like that Ann Darrow (in this version) weighs the option of
debasing herself in a nudie revue... and decides she isn't willing to
do so. Not even out of desperation. But she IS starving... and that
apple... surely one apple won't be missed...?
The dinosaur sequences were magnificent, I thought. I hope that the
extended-version DVD, when it comes out, will have the plesiosaur
sequence from the original. I think they filmed it, but chopped it
out for time. It MIGHT have been a 4-hour movie, otherwise, from what
I've heard! As it is, I felt that the 3-hours running time just flew
by. Some thought it dragged at points, but I remembered to urinate
before sitting in the theater, and I didn't get desperate for a
bathroom break! Three hours just flew by, I thought. Not since Oliver
Stone's "JFK" have I seen a 3-hour film go by so fast. I've seen
movies that are only 1 and a half to 2 hours long seem to take
forever to end. Not this one, though.
I also appreciate the fact that Jackson went to a great deal of
trouble to make the ending line "work" in the context of this film.
Jack Black, in an interview in GQ (I think) told the interviewer that
the line is like "To be or not to be" in "HAMLET". You DON'T want to
f*** it up. But... how DO you deliver the line, "It was beauty killed
the beast"? How do you do it without it coming across as cheesy and
stupid?
By setting up the earlier scenes, where Ann Darrow puts her fist to
her heart and tells Kong that the sunset they're watching on that
clifftop is "beautiful"... where Ann sees Kong mimic ("ape") her
gesture on top of the Empire State Building, intimating that he took
her up there because the view of the sunset was as "beautiful" as it
was at that place on Skull Island... well, it seemed to me that
Denham -- who must have heard her describe at least the first of
those two moments, during the boatride back to New York City -- was
acknowledging Kong's ability to appreciate Beauty. And that THAT was
the reason, ultimately, that he allowed himself to be cornered up on
top of the building. He wasn't just a dumb animal, as the soldier
claimed. The scary life on Skull Island -- Kill or Be Killed -- had
been made more precious by having encountered this strange little
blonde creature. For the first time in his life, perhaps, Kong
laughs... seeing this little actress do her vaudeville routines for
him. Imagine fighting dinosaurs every waking day of your life...
being battle-scarred from each dangerous encounter after the other...
and then inexplicably finding JOY in something other than the
beautiful sunset? That's why he takes her up to that spot, later, to
watch the sunset with him. To share in that beauty. None of that was
in the original version, and by including it in THIS version, Jackson
makes this remake WORK.
I enjoyed the De Laurentiis version for what it was worth, though I
never acknowledged it to be a great film by any means. It was fun,
and I liked the updated Oil Company angle they played, with Jeff
Bridges being an Ivy League environmentalist opposed to Grodin's
exploitation of first the island's natives and then of Kong. But I
didn't cry at the end of that version of Kong. I did shed some tears
at the end of Jackson's version, though. The whole damned theater
didn't have one dry eye! That, ultimately, is the greatest homage he
made to the original: you CARE about the tragedy at the end. You
mourn for this dark-skinned, exploited beast. Because he is NOT just
a dumb animal. Especially, after having seen him protect Ann from
three -- count 'em, THREE -- V-Rex dinosaurs... you CARE about the
fate of this creature. After all the harshness he's endured on that
island as the last of his kind -- the bones of his deceased family
littering his 'home' -- he is still able to find a way to connect
with another living creature on a personal level. What Jackson added
to the story helped to make Kong more of a poignant figure. It helps
that Andy Serkis went out of his way to study REAL gorillas in the
wild, to portray this 25-foot ape more realistically than has ever
been done, outside of "GORILLAS IN THE MIST".
It's a terrific achievement, and I personally would give it 4-stars.
Out of 4. Just because it isn't the original... what kind of argument
is that? Heston's version of "BEN-HUR" isn't the original one -- it's
a remake of a silent film. So, too, is the color version he acted in
of "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS" -- De Mille had previously done an earlier
version in Black & White. Jackson's version of "KING KONG" isn't the
original -- so what? The original, magnificent "KING KONG" will
always be with us; and now, it will soon share shelf-space with
Jackson's magnificent re-telling. It's a terrific movie, and I'm glad
to have seen it in a theater, rather than just renting it on DVD.
Jackson's one of the few movie makers out there, it seems, who make
movies that beg to be seen in a theater.
"CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2"... I can wait until Comedy Central runs it,
a couple years from now! Or, I don't even need to see it, since I
never saw the first one, and I've heard that neither was all that
good anyway. A waste of Steve Martin's talents. Certainly there's no
compelling urge to see these cheap-o comedies on the big screen. But
KONG...? THIS is what the big screen was made for!

But, what was said here is true, the acting ISN'T that great: It's
very "30's styles" acting, which detracts from the story... Some here
have said the action sequences in the new film are "over the top",
but they're nowhere near as "over the top" as the acting in the

*** With all due respect, Rory, the original will be remembered
longer BECAUSE it is the source for Jackson's remake. Audiences in
the future who shy away from Black & White movies won't hesitate to
see Jackson's film version... and if they LOVE it, they'll go out of
their way to see the film he remade. THAT will help to keep the
original "KING KONG" around -- not just available to be seen, but
SEEN. If for no other reason than that, you should appreciate the
effect Jackson's film will have for posterity. People yet unborn will
watch Jackson's version -- never having seen the original -- and
they'll track down a copy of the original movie just to see why
Jackson was so driven to retell the story. And, with any luck,
they'll be able to appreciate the original for what it was, despite
the limitations.
Certainly, nobody ever saw -- or will see -- Burton's film
entitled "PLANET OF THE APES" and then be compelled to see the 1968
film, if they hadn't already seen it. Somebody who's never seen the
original "PLANET" might never bother if they've seen Burton's
godawful version and assumed that it was a remake of a crappy movie.
Wouldn't THAT be sad?

.html Speaking of "KING KONG", Jeff Krueger sent me a X-mas card, hand-drawn
by himself, depicting some POTA apes throwing snowballs at Kong atop
the Empire State Building (or, of a POTA gorilla on a snow-ice
sculpture that looks like the Empire State Building, since the scale of
the gorilla is the same as the apes chucking snowballs at him).
It seems to be wholly original -- I can see the original pencils over
which ink-pens and colored pencils were drawn. Jeffie made this card
just for me, it looks like, and I just wanted him to know that it was a
nice gesture. On the inside it says:
Hi Patrick!
HANG IN THERE THIS YEAR!

I hope he (you, Jeff) and everybody else here had/has/is-having a good

I saw it last weekend. To quote one reviewer, "Even I could see where
to cut" It should be called KING LONG. As if that wasn't
enough the overly dramatic acting was laughable. Especially Jack Blacks --
I half expected him to break into a Tenacious D song. But everyone's was
awful. Naomi Watts dramatic pause before getting on the ship and her
little speeches. Adrien Brody's musings about his play -- and his
giant "Bigger then Kong's nostrils were very distracting. It was looking up a
pair of tunnels. Even the ship's crew was terrible. From the
Captain to the First Officer right down to the Cabin Boy. I didn't believe
a single performance. Not one.
It's like that old anecdote about when some Suit commented to Harrison Ford
that he didn't think he'd make it in Show Biz. He said -- by way of
explanation, that when Tony Curtis was first in a movie, he delivered a bag of
groceries and you took one look at that person and you knew that was a movie
star. Ford leaned across his desk and said, "I thought you were supposed to
think he was a grocery delivery boy."
And the SFX, though great, were such drawn out scenes, with so
many unbelievable narrow escapes as to be Unbelievable. So much so
that when someone did die, you were like, FINALLY! Not that there weren't
many deaths. There were so many you wondered how they got that many crew
members on that little tub of a ship. But the ratios was so off!
For example: The Spider Pit scene, with the giant grasshoppers.
The guy was covered in them. Now I don't know if you've ever fired a
machine gun, but it is not something you would ever want to use to pick bugs,
even giant ones, off someone with, especially a Thompson.
But the whole movie was like this. The scene with the Brontosauruses
falling all over each other in the canyon and people running between their
legs? Oh please! I could have believed it if it was only 5 minutes
long. And I'm pretty sure I'm not exaggerating on that. And it
reminded me of the Mammoths in LOTR 2. In fact just about everything
reminded me of LOTR from the walls on Skull Island to the vistas of
Manhattan. I can understand that he has a style, and that he used the same
artists from LOTR, but it was so reminiscent that if he had a John Fogerty
Deal he's have to sue himself for infringement.
All the scenes, even the good ones, were just too long. If I'm
checking my watch in the middle of an Action Sequence, you need a cut. It
was just one thing after another right down the ice skating stuff. It's
like he was trying to justify every dollar he spent by putting it on the
screen. I could have saved him tens of millions of dollars and about 45
minutes on the running time. Of course I'd have to spend some of that
savings reshooting the actors reading their lines believably, but still . .
.
Don't get me wrong. There is a good movie in there,
somewhere. But you just have to whittle it down to find it. Just like you
have to cut every scene without Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet, or the Limbo
One Liners, the Heston Scene, and the fake fighting from POTAY2K1.
Okay, I've gone on far to seriously long enough, by half, on this review,
and it's starting to look like one of "Pat's Posts". I just believe if
you're going to do a subject that's unbelievable, you have to treat it in a
believable way. Depression Era Manhattan is not Middle
Earth. And my suspension of disbelief, much like my bladder, can only
be stretched so far.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not saying they had to do a shot-for-shot
remake ala Psycho. But it was just so far off on tangents.
Ironic that the Cabin Boy was reading Conrad's Heart Of
Darkness, since that was the movie that Orson Wells
was trying to make when the Studio shut the production
down because it was getting too overblown, and he had
to make Citizen Kane instead. The operative word there
is "OVERBLOWN". Peter Jackson is only shooting
himself in the foot by trying to put everything including
the kitchen sink in his movie. He should show some
restraint and learn a bit of subtlety.
I can't believe that last word is spelled like that. Shouldn't it
be
spelled S-U-D-D-E-L-T-Y, like it's pronounced?
Anyway, the point is, since Kong hasn't preformed to expectation
it may be like Wells' South American film was for him. And no
studio will ever give him free reign on a $200 million plus dollar
movie again. And that's probably a good thing. This was
much
like his POTA2K1, except instead of too much studio interference,
there wasn't enough, and he ran amok. There is a 500 Ton
Monster
loose in the city, and it's not Kong. It's Peter Jackson in
Hollywood!

film. But If I ever buy it, I will
be editing it down to a watchable
version. Which is what he should
have done. And if not, then the
studio should have done it for him,
and released this version on the
DVD, as the unedited directors cut.

63
It begins here! We go
right from the end of the Escape adaptation last week, jumping ahead about 18
years Earth-time to Marvel's adaptation on Conquest of the Planet of the Apes!
The amazing Alfredo Alcala is back doing the art, so those of you who haven't
seen these comics are in for a treat.
This week's bonus
features are two photos: one from Planet and one from Conquest, and a letter
column.
I would be remiss if I
didn't note for Ape comics fans everywhere that today is the day you'll be
able to purchase the first issue of Revolution on the Planet of the Apes,
the new Apes comic from Mr. Comics. Support your local comic store. Not
sure you have one? Try the comic store locator service here:
If the nearest store is
too far away, you can order the comic on line at either of these
two links:

Kong 2005 (OT) ****SPOILERS OTA !!!!!****
I saw
it last weekend. To quote one reviewer, "Even I could see where to
cut" It should be called KING LONG. As if that wasn't
enough the overly dramatic acting was laughable. Especially Jack Blacks
-- I half expected him to break into a Tenacious D song. But everyone's
was awful. Naomi Watts dramatic pause before getting on the ship and her
little speeches. Adrien Brody's musings about his play -- and his
giant "Bigger then Kong's nostrils were very distracting. It was looking
up a pair of tunnels. Even the ship's crew was terrible. From
the Captain to the First Officer right down to the Cabin Boy. I didn't
believe a single performance. Not one.
It's
like that old anecdote about when some Suit commented to Harrison Ford that he
didn't think he'd make it in Show Biz. He said -- by way of explanation,
that when Tony Curtis was first in a movie, he delivered a bag of groceries and
you took one look at that person and you knew that was a movie star. Ford
leaned across his desk and said, "I thought you were supposed to
think he was a grocery delivery boy."
And the
SFX, though great, were such drawn out scenes, with so many unbelievable
narrow escapes as to be Unbelievable. So much so that when someone did
die, you were like, FINALLY! Not that there weren't many deaths.
There were so many you wondered how they got that many crew members on that
little tub of a ship. But the ratios was so off!
For
example: The Spider Pit scene, with the giant grasshoppers. The guy
was covered in them. Now I don't know if you've ever fired a machine gun,
but it is not something you would ever want to use to pick bugs, even giant
ones, off someone with, especially a Thompson.
But the
whole movie was like this. The scene with the Brontosauruses falling all
over each other in the canyon and people running between their legs? Oh
please! I could have believed it if it was only 5 minutes long. And
I'm pretty sure I'm not exaggerating on that. And it reminded me of the
Mammoths in LOTR 2. In fact just about everything reminded me of
LOTR from the walls on Skull Island to the vistas of Manhattan. I
can understand that he has a style, and that he used the same artists from
LOTR, but it was so reminiscent that if he had a John Fogerty Deal he's
have to sue himself for infringement.
All the
scenes, even the good ones, were just too long. If I'm checking my watch
in the middle of an Action Sequence, you need a cut. It was just one
thing after another right down the ice skating stuff. It's like he was
trying to justify every dollar he spent by putting it on the screen. I
could have saved him tens of millions of dollars and about 45 minutes on the
running time. Of course I'd have to spend some of that savings reshooting
the actors reading their lines believably, but still . . .
Don't
get me wrong. There is a good movie in there, somewhere. But
you just have to whittle it down to find it. Just like you have to cut every
scene without Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet, or the Limbo One Liners, the
Heston Scene, and the fake fighting from POTAY2K1.
Okay,
I've gone on far to seriously long enough, by half, on this review, and it's
starting to look like one of "Pat's Posts". I just believe if
you're going to do a subject that's unbelievable, you have to treat it in a
believable way. Depression Era Manhattan is not Middle Earth. And my
suspension of disbelief, much like my bladder, can only be stretched so
far.

Stick it, Patrick!!!
I didn't like it, never said I hated it. I just don't think it's very
good. Three stars means I think it's good, but not very good (that would
merit three and a half stars), and certainly not four stars, which means
excellent. Learn your star ratings!!!
What do you know about serious film criticism, PatDICK? You think BATTLE
FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is a good movie!

I just thought it may be nice to still have at least one POTA group

discuss things rationally that make at least a bit of sense.

.htmlSheesh. Forgive me for I know not what I do. I'm sorry but the
messages where they really get mad at each other are the only reason
I read those long, very opinionated post. I know its wrong and I have
a problem but I live for that, and Patrick please don't take offesnse
to this. You have every right to spout off your opinions and theories
and that is what this place is for and I understand that, but I love
it when somebody gets so upset by what you've (or anybody else for
that matter) said that they lose control. That's why I can't function
fully in James' group and stay a lurker. I always end up pissing
somebody off, even when I don't mean too and that's why I love this
group. We may have some rough spots but I think everyone likes and
respects the members of this group and if we go at each other every
now and again its only because we all feel very passionate about our
love for Planet of the Apes. Which is what has brought us all
together in the first place.
