Well, in CONQUEST and BATTLE nobody crash
landed - they were just there!
What other ways could one arrive there -
suspended animation or time-machine?

I agree with this but without doing a remake I think you
need to find a new way to get to the Planet of the apes. I think it gets a
little old and my wife always likes to point out that only the monkeys seem
able to land a space ship without crashing. I think doing a remake is stupid
(EX) Tim Burtons catastrophe.

So we have already done BEWARE THE BEAST which is set in the PLANET environment, taking place at the conclusion of BENEATH.
We have also done WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES which is set in the PLANET environment, taking place (about 10 years) prior to PLANET, and also leaping forward to taking place just
before Milo, Zira and Cornelius take off and witness the destruction of earth.
WITHIN is left open to further explore how Milo (and Robbie the Robot!:) get he ship up and going etc, so there's a place we COULD go.
We could do a RETURN story.
We could do a TV SHOW environment story.
Or something that pairs with the sequels to PLANET.
Ideas?
Michael
I spoke with Neil last night and we have decided the next comic we do will be interactive, and written by the entire group.
I'm fairly sure this will be in the "comic strip" format that WITHIN was (well, most of it!) - but you MIGHT be able to convince him otherwise.
The first question is - WHAT PART OF THE PLANET OF THE APES DO WE WANT TO DEAL WITH?
Do we want to do something in the PLANET environment (as WITHIN was)?
Or maybe in the TV show or RETURN environment?
We'll discuss this and make a decision by Monday at the latest.
This is a unique opportunity so please chime in ASAP and begin to
discuss what you want from this project.
Michael
Ideas: A story about Zira and her experimenting on humans before she meets Taylor.
Zoos are mentioned in planet. There could be a story about humans living in a zoo and their ape caretakers.

Agreed.
A lot of
members have been a bit quiet though, so I really am hoping to hear from at
least 20-30 people who are interested in helping to author this new group
comic.

get every THIRD post or something!
Or you are
getting "old-timer's" disease! ;)
I just announced we are doing a group
comic.
We are
discussing the setting - what do you think would be nice to
explore?
Pre
PLANET?
Between
BENEATH and PLANET?
etc???

Dr. Zaius this is a character that could be explored more. Maybe he fears humans due to his past, he was attacked by humans in the jungle.
Another astronaut crashes on pota. He lives in the jungle with wild humans for awhile.
In another village of apes, they eat humans. They see humans as food. These apes are carnivorous.
The gorillas who go on the hunt. A story could be written about the hunt from their perspective. Some are successful in hunting humans, others are not.

Ideas?
I have an idea on this subject but Give me a day or two and you can do what you want with it. I actually wrote my own Book called Fade to Black on the Planet of the apes
4 years ago. What a nightmare that was, took me 2 years to write something that will never go anywhere but I was happy with it. The thing about apes in my mind is to carry on with them not redo them, like that
catastrophie Tim Burton did. I will admit the Astronaut them is a tired premise in my mind, my wife likes to point out how only the Apes can land a space ship without crashing. I have an idea on how to get them
there. I'll get back to you on it and like I said you can do what you want with it.

For some reason Alan maxwell has just left the

It is a great pity as I was going to ask him about when we can expect
to see the next issue of Simian Scrolls as I thought it should have
been out by now?
Maybe they have decided to call it a day, as Dave
Ballard did seem to hint at that a while ago when the last issue came out.
I sincerely hope they haven't given up on
it.

That suggests
she has the capability to - does not really mean she currently does. The
way I see it she cut humans up as part of the process of becoming a doctor and
then moved into behavioural studies in preference to physical
studies....
Sounds like

I'm guilty of being one of the 'quiet ones' here on the DG of late. One
of the problems with the DG being so voluminous lately has been the
fact that just as I am about to catch up on the many messages, a new
batch pours in the next day and by the time I sift through them, I have
no time to post anything myself.
So my 2 cents on the latest main threads:
Sorry Rory, but I just think that the whole "POTA's right to exist on
it's own argument" is just silly. There were sequels and therefore it
is a saga, like it or not. I believe that the original is head over
heels superior to anything that came along later and it is and always
will be considered a great movie (and not only by science fiction
standards). But, any attempts to erase or downplay the fact that there
were sequels is just futile. I like to think of the many positive
things that those sequels gave us, including new characters and decent
stories. Focusing on Dehn as the culprit for all the flaws of the
sequels is probably oversimplifying the constraints he had to work in
(including a relatively very short period of time to come up with the
scripts which in itself may be the reason for many of the blunders).
You can scream and shout and shake your fist at the world, but it's a
done deal (35 years +), so get over it and move on.
I was a bit surprised (well not that much) to find out that I was not
the only one who often has to skip Patrick's lengthy diatribes. Patrick
please learn to get to the point. We do enjoy your point of view on
many things (even if we don't always agree with them), but when your
emails are so long, many people are forced to only read bits and pieces
which does not help your cause.
Michael, the success of the DG is great and we do owe you our gratitude
for keeping it alive and proding us now and then. But please, do not
let 'message counts' and an "us verses them" attitude to disparage the
other groups. We know there there is some bad history and some bad
feeling amongst some members, but bringing it out in the open on this
DG just tarnishes it's own fine reputation. Don't make me quote
Burton's POTA by saying "Can't we all just learn to live together?"
(Damn, now I'm quoting Burton POTA!).
Neil, and Michael. I great round of applause to the conclusion of
Within. I know it has been a lot of hard work, but it was great. I
still have to print out the entire story and reread it because, I've
still only read it in bits and pieces reading in that manner does not
do it justince as the story is still too fragmented in my mind.
I pestered my local comic book owner to no end ("Is it here yet? Is it
here yet?" ) until I finaly got my copy of issue 1 of Revolution. I
thought it was just great and hope that not only the rest of the series
continues with the same level of quality, but that the numbers in the
end justify more than the projected 6 issues.
Finally, this new 'participatory' comic story you guys want to cook up.
Honestly, prior to Revolution, the one piece of the saga (see Rory!)
that I always felt needed more elaboration was the post Conquest
events. Now that the MR guys are already onto it, I have not particular
preference. I do hope that whatever setting is chosen, that a new
character take the lead as was done with Gideon in BTB. Creating a new
character that we could relate to from a different angle was great. I
never thought a gorilla could be so sympathetic.
Now, lest Patrick throw my own lengthy post right back at me, I will
end it here. ;)

Point taken
Dario.
I believe the
only future for POTA is in the unity of the fans.
Sadly, silly
squabbles keep the fans apart.
I am not
making it an "us vs them", but as I always do - when someone gets competitive
with me, I slap them down. Or should I say, we slap each
other.
Actually, if
people would like to mention the new comics project to other groups, I'd love to
have Helen, James, Glen, Menluth, "our good fiends (sic) at Scrolls" and all the
other "splitters" (term of endearment there!) join in and have some fun as a
unified group. I'm going to bet none of them take me up on the offer, but
that's simply because some people thrive on the split. Hope I am
wrong!
Could someone
who is in the POTA group extend this offer please (2:1 they don't even allow the
post to go through!).
Michael

A pota discussion group ends up on the simian world through a time warp.
After seeing some of these middle age people naked, the apes develop
psychological problems.
Crossovers: King Kong being incontinent is a major health hazard.
But ape should never kill ape. The simian world has a major dilemma to contend
with.
Batman arrives. A kindly chimp circus owner takes him in. He is the most
popular exhibit, half bat, half human. The apes line up to see him.
Unfortunately, the joker shows up and
starts laughing at the naked pota discussion people. <.html

here's an ideal for
the group interactive comic. My ideal is based on the POTA TV show. My storyline
is about a spaceship which is launched from Equatorial Africa from the ESA
(European Space Agency) with a crew of six which is launched about 10 years
after Virdon and Burke was lost and about year before Ceasar's ape
revolution but crashed10 years earlier than the three astronauts who came
later. <.html <.html

We all do –
everyone who contributes owns an equal share of the story (Neil owns the art).

Ever see the Futurama that was on tonight.
The one with the monkey who's hat make him

That explains a lot too.

worry Rory, I did not buy it, rent it or pay for 'pay per view'.)

Just wanted to let everyone
know that the group's posts for April
2004 have been deleted from the main site and can now be found
in the files section of the Archives group as a text file:
We have to do this periodically to free up space
as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore. As this group is so
active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever
we like to keep a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups to
store excess stuff on.
One very important point - to access the old posts
etc. you will need to be a member of the Archives group. The same is also
true for the Fan Fiction and Photos groups:
All the sites can
be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.
Thanks,
Neil

I'd like to see more of Going Home because I always like seeing new art by Neil, but I do have to say I wasn't as excited by this story as I was with Within.
While I appreciate what you're trying to do with making the TV series setting more mature and appealing to modern sensibilities, I wish you'd do it without destroying or twisting the TV series characters. If
the end goal is to set up new characters/situations for an on-going story set years after the events from the series, then you should just start there. Or do a Battlestar Galactica-type revamp where you take the same
basic premise as the show, use some of the original character names, and start over from the beginning. Make Alan a woman (Allyn) if you want, or make Galen a gorilla instead of a chimp.
As far as a new group-participation comic, I have to say that I think that comics written by committee don't usually turn out very well. You need a
singular vision behind the story, something both writer and artist feel strongly about. If Neil wants to do a Return story, I say let him do it. Personally, after seeing his take on Urko that he did for the
Return card set wrapper, I'd love to see his versions of Zaius, Zira, Cornelius, Bill, Jeff, Judy, Brent and especially Nova. Greg
