Enough already! Each movie is not getting a bonus disc. I already mapped it out in my previous post. We probably get the POTA2001 and 35th anniversary "Planet" (read: "Behind the POTA") bonus discs. - - - Jeff

AND, it also says that the films will each have a bonus disc!!!

It was never shot.  If it had been we'd have seen stills from it long ago.

An inside story of Landon would be cool. Did he speak? Is this the
real cause of his operation that took his mind? Was Zaius, or even
Ursus, present if and when they found out he could speak? Maybe we
could make a story of him escaping into the Forbidden Zone and
finding out where he really was. He could be caught buy presuing
Soldiers and Zaius and brought back since we know his fate already.
Maybe some of the Soldiers on the hunt for him could be the ones
Ursus was speaking about that never returned from the Forbidden Zone
except for the one who had lost his mind.

I hope the movies are released anamorphic Widescreen this time. But,
I fear since they have been previously released on DVD, FOX will
just reuse the ones they already have transfered. Any one know for
sure as of yet?

The last thing that should ever be done to 'BG' is to lighten it up.

How about stories from the "Middle Ages" of the apes?  That period when the scared scrolls were being written.  I hear that line in PLANET, "And Proteus brought the upright creature into the garden, and the children they did make fun of him," and I wonder what life in those early days must have been like.  I imagine the apes living like the ancient Greeks or Romans, perhaps wearing togas even.  (You know, just because we saw the apes in BATTLE wearing the same outfits they wore 2000 years later in PLANET doesn't mean we're trapped into believing that -- just because Fox was too cheap to pay for new costumes in BATTLE.  In fact, I think it's dumb and unimaginative on our parts if we just adapt that as they way it's supposed to be.)  This is another reason why I like the idea of there being two timelines -- it leaves the original timeline open for your imagination.

I can't imagine that they're just reissue the old discs.  This is what I think we're going to get.  Whole new packaging, including the images on the individual discs.  Anamorphic transfers for the sequels and new interactive menu screens for the sequels (perhaps PLANET too, but I'm not so sure).  The bonus discs will simply be carry-overs of those from the 2001 set and the original 35th anniversary edition.  I think the TV series discs will be identical to the old ones and that the cartoon series discs will copy the look of them and their menu screens.

I also don't think we know enough yet to tell exactly what this thing is going to be, but I really don't expect we'll get extended versions of anything, including BATTLE, or much in the way of extras we haven't seen already.

I don't think anything major could go on with Landon without Zira knowing about it.  However, you could fabricate a "scenario" where, while still unconscious, Landon is placed in a zoo clinic far from ape city.  He's treated for his skull fracture but is unable to talk for a while, during which time he's looked after by a sympathetic zookeeper, maybe Julius' cousin Antonius or something, and well.... you can make up the rest.

Well, that wasn't quite what I was going for, and if I've offended you in any way I apologize. As I said, we can agree to disagree on the merits of the new BG. And I do want to see more of Going Home, my feelings on the direction of the story notwithstanding.

Anyway, I was planning on starting work on the hardcopy of Within in the next week  or so. The idea would be to have some to send you when the next issue of Revolution comes out. We've got 22 pages of art, which leaves 2 blanks if you have any sketches or anything you want to fill those with. We'd also need a cover. I recall seeing a color version of the first panel from the first strip, but I don't have a copy of that in my files. Would you want to use that, or did you have something else in mind?

Do you have higher-resolution scans of the art than the ones you sent me for the PDFs? The files I have read at 72dpi with an image size of about 35 x 46 cm.. I'm going to have to print them at a little less than half that size (is that the size of the originals?) To fit in the same trim height as the other ashcan comics the art will be reduced to about 14.5 x 19 cm. That will increase the resolution on the files I have from 72 to about 175 which should be okay, but if you have these scanned at a higher resolution already that would be better to really show off your pencil work.

Jackson misjudged the length (word of mouth saying that it's "boring") but with DVDs, etc. it should do pretty good. Just not what they hoped. And Jackson still has plenty of mojo left from his 3 huge "Ring" fingers. BUT the expectations for "Kong" got the release of the POTA cartoon; that "Ultimate Collection" was planned before "Kong" was released (and maybe got them started on an "Apes 2" that we don't know about yet,but it's Fox so it'll suck).  - - - Jeff

AMEN, BROTHER!! That's why we should explore the cult of apes who
renounce the teachings of the lawgiver as a way just to keep them in
line. They feel that there really was never a true "Lawgiver" and
these stories have been passed down for years to keep the gorillas
from using brute force to take command and to keep science at a
standstill. Finally they have their Messiah, who will lead them from
the darkness of age old teachings forced down their collective
throats for generations and take their place in the light of free
thought and science (which could get even Orangs. and Chimps
questioning their faith.) But can any force topple generations of
fear and lies so strongly rooted into the apes culture? Potential for
violence, chaos, torture, good vs. evil, and a true underlining
message to make you think. Just like the original AND it would be
great fun to draw. Your welcome. ...Oh, I did ask Satan if it
was okay to use this and he gave his blessing. Hehehe.

same with those ideas like 'why did Zira become a doctor etc.
Remember we are talking about writing for a comic which needs
something that is also going to be interesting visually. I will not be
drawing a comic that is just basically talking heads, I have zero
    interest in doing that, sorry.

Isn't The Talking Heads a musical group? Seriously, you have a point. The comics are a mixture of characters, action and scenery. A story about Zira couldn't be entirely in a lab or the institute. Elaine

    .html
There's an update on tvshowsondvd.com this morning regarding the packaging and the content of the Ultimate Apes DVD set. Release date has changed to 3/28 to coincide with the Kong DVD release. Also packaging will be in an ape head and it will be a limited edition. The ape head may or may not be the same as the upcoming Region 2 release, which is pictured in the article. The sequel films will be anamorphic. Doesn't look like we get any new movie extras, but some of the extras from the 35th anniversary disc that were specific to Escape and Conquest are being added to the discs for those movies.

Looking at the disc content listing it appears that some extras will be added to the TV series discs. All four discs list TV spots and still photos as extras. The current TV series release has no extras.

Here's the link to the article:

The set is also available to pre-order from Amazon for $125.99.

You already own this, Whitty.  The original DVD releases of the APES movies were THX transfers, which doesn't necessarily mean they were the best possible transfers.  What the original transfers weren't in the US was anamorphic, but they were in other regions.  I have them from the UK and they are anamorphic.  I don't know about any of them being in AC-3, except the original.  AC-3 is what Dobly Digital discrete stereo surround used to be called.

Well, there is some good news with this, at least the sequels will be in anamorphic.  I've already pre-ordered it with Amazon.

One thing I do believe is that BATTLE will NOT be the extended version.  This doesn't bother me too much since I consider the theatrical version the offical version, but I know it'll bug most here.

Yes, it looks to me as if they've remastered all the sequels now with stereo.  Here in the US BENEATH, CONQUEST and BATTLE are already in stereo, but it's an old "fake" stereo.  You see, the transfers that were put out on DVD back in 2000 were carry overs from the THX videocassettes and laserdiscs that came out in 1998 and '99.

When they remastered PLANET in anamorphic for the 35th Anniversary Edition they also really improved not only the picture but also the stereo, especially in the Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1 tracks.  I'm hoping they've done the same now for the sequels.

It will also be interesting to see if the cropping on CONQUEST is now different will an anamorphic transfer.

You DO NOT have to get an HD TV to enjoy the APES movies in 16x9.  These new transfers will be anamorphic, but they won't be in HD.  That will have to wait until HD or Blue Ray DVD transfers.

But you can enjoy these anamorphic transfers on a 16x9 standard display.  Just make sure you DVD player has "progressive scan" and you'll see it as nearly HD.  Most 16x9 standard displays, whether tube sets, LCDs or Plasmas, are "HD ready" which means that later you can add an HD tuner to them.

Anyway, it all comes down to spending the money, but you can now get yourselves a really nice 16x9 display for less than $2000, maybe even lower than $1000 if you really look.

Believe me, you get that baby home and start watching the APES movies in 16x9 and progressive, and you won't want to leave the house for a week!

But if you have a 16x9 HD TV

It doesn't have to be HD,

    have the definition of the
    original print, which is
    better than most video,
    except possibly HD.

Maybe they've talked about this in the "other" group, but apparently, and I haven't checked it out, but on DVD the plaque on the statue for the pets is cropped.  Some words are cut off.  On older transfers you can read the entire thing.

They do - like I said I do NOT like them.

I'll pay extra to get a genuine WS size and that will "box" the 16x9 or just cut more off the top and bottom (which I am NOT keen on!).

Movies should be seen as they were shown in the theatre!

No... They cut it off in the letterboxing.  I think you're a little confused.

Letterboxing is doing a widescreen transfer with no cropping.  16x9 has to do with the demensions of the display unit.  A 16x9 display is wider than the standard 4:3 display.

Maybe. I know when I sent the tape back and got the replacement that
it was corrected. I thought it was just my copy but I saw it on TV
during that same year and the TV version did the same thing. I don't

I like that it's being called a "limited release". That probably means the cartoons and the sequels will be available separately. They aren't going to do all that just to sell to a few serious fans. - - - Jeff

Here's the link to the article:

    http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4904

The set is also available to pre-order from Amazon for $125.99.

You can't.  I'm talking about the video, which even in the current High Definition standard of 1080i is no where near the resolution of 35mm film.  1080 refers to the horizontal lines of resolution that make up one frame of video.  I heard that to reach 35mm film, video would have to be around 3000 lines.

During the part of the film where the mutants are trying to defeat the gorilla army with their illusions, listen to the sound when Mendez is asked "What will you do?" and he replies "Everything possible."  In the background you can hear the music for the apes march start before they cut to that scene.

I hope they fix that because it's been in every transfer I've ever watched.

    That's what I thought.
One frame of film has millions of
silver halide crystals on it. There's
no way you could increase the
    resolution beyond what it already
was, unless you took a time machine
into the future, got a super hi-res camera,
and went back in time, and reshot it side
by side with the original camera.  Maybe
They'll have fake 3-D like fake stereo. I
have watched  them with glasses that make
it look like it's in 3-D, but it would be nice

AC-3 audio is the technical name for Dolby Digital and almost all
DVD's are AC-3 (they can also have DTS and PCM).

Remember, Dolby digital (AC-3) is not the number of channels. A movie
can have a mono track and still be in AC-3. AC-3 is the means in
which the audio (mono, stereo, matrix surround and full 5.1 surround)
    is encoded.

Yes, that has been happening on HDTV broadasts (or so I hear). A full
widescreen movie (panavision or cinemascope) will be cropped to 16:9
    instead of letterboxing it.

It's not done on DVD and the POTA films will be anamorphic and will
have small black bars on 16:9 TV's

    I can't wait because although I don't have a widescreen TV, I have a
TV that performs a "vertical squeeze" on the scan lines to preserve
    the anamorphic resolution of DVD's.

The difference between the anamorphic POTA and the non anamorphic
POTA (I have both) is night and day which so much more scan lines
devoted to the picture in anamorphic.

Yes, that's true, but I suspect that they've remixed the soundtracks for the sequels for four-channel Dolby Digital -- right (1), left (2), center (3) and mono surround (4).
