Shit yeah!
Some movies it makes little difference, but
many of them have a new dimension added through surround sound.

I have a 52' Big screen
but no surround sound. Tell me something, if I get one does it really make any

Well, let me put it this way....
YES!!!!!!
Go out and get yourself a surround system at once. Make sure it has Dolby Digital and DTS, and make sure in comes with all the speakers and a subwoofer. Don't get a cheap system, but one around $150 to
$250. And get one that a major brand. If you care about really getting into the APES films -- do it!

So in other words it will have the effect of Stereo?
I would like to watch them like that!
I don't know what you're getting in Australia, but the original DVDs offered all the films in stereo except ESCAPE. BENEATH, CONQUEST and BATTLE were in two channel stereo, but it was "fake"
stereo mixed from mono elements. The music, for example, didn't have the kind of stereo separation that the scores to on their CDs.
Since the entire scores are available on all the films (well, ESCAPE could still be trouble) in "true" stereo, I don't see why better remixes of the soundtracks to the films aren't possible. It
just takes time and $$$ to do it, something that Fox just loves to give to the APES films, RIGHT?!!!

Dunno.
Got it 4
years back and it is a $5500 "state of the art" YAMAHA with $3500 Bose
speakers.
It would
WANNA be discrete! :)

Yes. Screen size is only half of the theater experience.
Half of what you see is actually heard, or felt through
the sound system. If you ever seen a work print
without the music or sound effects you know
what I mean.

Whilst drawing a
new panel for Going Home I noticed something that I found slightly puzzling. I
was using the map that is on Urko's wall in the TV show and just off the coast
it shows what are clearly 3 islands:
Now I thought that
the apes were afraid of the water so how would they have mapped these islands?
There must be (or
have been) apes using boats out in the ocean in order for these maps to have
been charted, just something that I found a bit strange given what we are
presented with in the show.

new panel for Going Home I noticed something that I found slightly puzzling. I
was using the map that is on Urko's wall in the TV show and just off the coast
it shows what are clearly 3 islands:
Now I thought
that the apes were afraid of the water so how would they have mapped these
islands?
There must be
(or have been) apes using boats out in the ocean in order for these maps to
have been charted, just something that I found a bit strange given what we are
presented with in the show.

Not necessarily. You wouldn't need a boat to map
an island you can see from shore. Nothing on the
map indicates scale. On a clear day you can see
Catalina Island from the coast of California.

No, the 16:9 TV will have small black bars, the 4:3 TV will have bigger
bars.
The Panavision/Cinemascope image that POTA films were made in are wider than
a widescreen TV. Some films are, some are not. Here is an example of a 1.85
to 1 aspect ratio film image (close to, but not exactly 16:9) the result is
no black bars on a 16:9 widescreen TV
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/anamorphic185demo.html"
Here is an example of a 2.35 to 1 film (the ratio of all the Apes films)
image on DVD. There will be small black bars but the whole image will be
preserved. HDTV channels will frequently crop 2.35 to 1 movies to 16:9. Film
lovers frown on this.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/anamorphic235demo.html"
For most, it is much preferable to have those small black bars than to have
the image be cropped in order to eliminate them. The purpose of 16:9 TV is
not to eliminate black bars but to have a TV in an aspect ratio more like
current movies. Most of the time, you will not need black bars to see the
whole film image, but when you do, they are much smaller.
And then there are the films before widescreen (like Gone With The Wind and
Wizard Of Oz) that will have to have black bars on either side (instead of
top and bottom) so the squarish image will show properly.
Those movies ironically would have no black bars on 4:3. But of course,
early TV was made to be like movies before widesceen. Widescreen was made in
response to TV to give people something they could not see on TV :)
Best,
Mike <.html

I don't think he was an "ape lover"... As a trusted human, Caesar probably had him as an advisor, an as such, he would be counted on to step in when the "human problems" arose... He was sort of
the "human liaison"...<.html

Depends on the aspect ratio of the film. For 1.85:1 films the answer is no, there will not be any black bars. For a 2.35:1 film you will get black bars, but they will be smaller than if you were watching on a
4:3 TV. See these links for demonstrations:

Yes, which is why you should get a 16x9 TV -- because it's so much better! Dr. Zaius deserves it!

They may have aped the IDEA of maps but they must have been able to

By the way,
Ken Taylor (who is the guy who brought the TV Show to VHS in Australia before

cartoons that makes the best quality DVD of them I have seen look average.
So if you are wondering, the RETURN DVD should be worth the

Jerry Goldsmith Biography Update
As most of you know Carrie Goldsmith began the mammoth task of writing a biography about her father shortly before his
untimely death in 2004. Carrie is now in the final stages of her first draft and hopes to have a completed version of the book at the end of January.
Carrie plans to setup a special website to promote her book and post excerpts from it for fans to get a taste of what is to come. The site should be active within about 8 weeks and I will of course post details as soon

I have never met Ken. Is he a member of the group.
I live in the US and I bought the Tapes off of Ebay when they were first

www.tvshowsondvd.com continues to be the
place for updates on the new "Apes" collection. In the last two updates they've
shown what the set will look like (no separate boxes) and now they quote a Fox
spokesperson from an industry article that the cartoons WILL be sold separately.
So all of you slaves don't have to buy everything again. Personally, I'd rather
have everything in separate boxes than linked together in a funky ape head.
For those who haven't heard, the sequels are
being released anamorphic and with improved sound like the 35th anniversary
treatment of the original. Overall, it's a nice little advertisement for POTA. I
apologize to Fox for thinking the cartoons were a trap to sell more DVDs.

*** I'm not at all surprised at the possibility -- the probability --
that the Apes use boats and could have charted those 3 islands
themselves.
In the 1st movie, Cornelius mentions that "you can't ride along the
shore at high tide, and we had no boats on our last expedition". In
other words, Cornelius knows what a boat is -- and only Apes, in
3954, would've been able to navigate the ocean coast during the
previous expedition in such boats.
Ergo, the Apes DO have boats. Perhaps they don't use them all that
often, and perhaps those apes who do make use of boats are few and
far between, but they do have them.
As for Rory's notion that Urko's wall map was an "aped" version of a
human-drawn map... that's just nonsense. If they were aping a human
map, then why not include a GRID of latitude and longitude while
they're at it? And an arrow pointing towards North as well? And the
NAMES of the various towns next to the symbols for those towns?
The fact that Urko's map doesn't have ANY of those features suggests
that they haven't been aping any ancient human-made maps. The only
human-made map they seem to have used was the map on the wall of the
Garrison in the ruins of Oakland, in "THE LEGACY". They would have no
need to make an original Ape-version of a map of that city, since
there already was one -- a more accurate one than any their own
cartographers could probably make, too.

Much easier to explain that they just copied what they saw from surviving human maps. They are apes after all. READ YOUR BOULLE.

Ergo nothing! Give a map to a child and ask them to copy it and show you where their house is and you'd get something that looks like what the apes make. Am I talking to children here?
But anyway, NO it can't be this simple. No, the apes had to have boats, and of course they go on voyages like the ancient Vikings. Yeah, that's the ticket!

You know, I
must say (and I might be persuaded otherwise...) that the whole Boulle concept
of the apes simply APING mankind does not seem to be present in the movies, the
TV Show or the Cartoons....but RETURN is the CLOSEST thing to
Boulle.....

In the Boulle novel an atomic war hadn't destroyed civilization, but I still think the apes in the first two films generally lived in a society that "aped" what man had before -- and it seems the book the
apes must have had for the basis of their society was one on ancient Rome!

Fair
enough.
I made the
comment because we were talking about the group comic and someone suggested a
name - I thought maybe we should have an ape called BIGUS DICKUS, but then
that's King Kong - RIGHT Rory?!?!?!
So
Rory, did you read p1 of the "new" comic this morning?

Yeah. Did I ever say the apes didn't have boats? But, whatever... I'm not going to continue arguing over the stupid TV show!
It just amazes me how many APES fans don't understand Boulle's book, and now it turns out even Patrick doesn't!
In Boulle's novel the ape revolution happened 10,000 years in the past, and there had been not technological progress in all that time. Why? Because the apes were mere imitators. They took over the
human society and merely "aped" it. There was no invention on their part.
It should also be remembered that in the first episode of the TV show we see that Zaius has some human books. Why not then couldn't others of had maps as well and merely imitated what they saw? They would
put on the maps human towns and cities that weren't there anymore. Anyway, I'm not going to argue the stupid TV show. If you want to believe the apes set sail in boats to map the islands off the
coast of what was California, hey... whatever turns you on. <.html
