It didn't have the Ursus/Mutant artwork. They were on the 3-sheet, window card and insert posters. I finally took my insert poster for BENEATH out of its frame and scanned the image. My scanner
isn't large enough to scan the entire thing, so I had to do four sections and then piece them together. Took all evening.

Well, as far as accuracy, in "The Good Seeds", Urko just uses

How accurate can an apes hand be when used to measure distance?
Has anyone ever bothered to notice that in the TV show
Urko is a BONEHEAD?

Versus in
Planet where Zaius is NOT apeing - he seems to actually be going out of his way
NOT to allow technology so apes do not go the way of humans - ALMOST the
OPPOSITE to Boulle (if you ask me!).
Michael
In Boulle's novel the ape revolution happened 10,000 years
in the past, and there had been not technological progress in all that
time. Why? Because the apes were mere imitators. They took
over the human society and merely "aped" it. There was no invention on
their part.
It should also be remembered that in the first episode of
the TV show we see that Zaius has some human books. Why not then
couldn't others of had maps as well and merely imitated what they saw?
They would put on the maps human towns and cities that weren't there
anymore. Anyway, I'm not going to argue the stupid TV show. If
you want to believe the apes set sail in boats to map the islands off the
coast of what was California, hey... whatever turns you on.

Yeah, it seems certain people here have forgotten that on this real planet of the apes, apes can't swim! Chimpanzees are terrified of the water.

Yeah, it seems certain people here have

Well, in the first film (when things are left "unexplained" and ambiguous) there's no proof otherwise that they didn't "ape" Humanity... Taylor says it himself when he theorizes that "Man

In the first film, nothing is exlained as to the "how's and why's" and it could be that the apes slowly did ape humanity until the roles were reversed...<.html

.html.html .html
From www.thedigitalbits.com:
We have the official skinny from 20th Century Fox on their upcoming celebration of all things
Planet of the Apes
on DVD. The centerpiece of the affair will be the 3/28 release of the 14-disc, THX-certified
Planet of the Apes: The Ultimate DVD Collection
(SRP $179.98). Here's a disc by disc list of the extras, as confirmed by the studio:
Disc One
-
Planet of the Apes
(1967 - anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 5.1 audio, audio commentary by composer Jerry
Goldsmith, commentary by actors Roddy McDowell, Natalie Trundy and Kim Hunter, and make-up artist John Chambers, text commentary by Eric Greene, author of
Planet of the Apes as American Myth
) - note that this is the same as Disc One from the
35th Anniversary Edition
.
Disc Two
-
Planet of the Apes Bonus Disc (includes the 1998
Behind the Planet of the Apes
documentary, trailers for all of the classic
Apes
films, promo spots, a make-up test with Edward G. Robinson from 1966, Roddy McDowall's original home movies, dailies
and outtakes, the 1967 N.A.T.O. presentation, 4 vintage featurettes (Planet of the Apes
,
A Look Behind the Planet of the Apes,
Don Taylor Directs Escape from the Planet of the Apes
and
J. Lee Thompson Directs Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
), original film reviews and galleries of poster art, production photos and costume sketches) - note that this is the same
as Disc Two from the 35th Anniversary Edition
and is also the same basic content as was included on Image Entertainment's
Behind the Planet of the Apes: Special Collector's Edition
.
Disc Three
-
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
(1970 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical
trailers for this and all of the other Apes
films and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery) - same extras as on the previous release.
Disc Four
-
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
(1971 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical
trailers for this and all of the other Apes
films and the
Don Taylor Directs Escape from the Planet of the Apes featurette).
Disc Five
-
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
(1972 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical
trailers for this and all of the other Apes
films and the
J. Lee Thompson Directs Conquest of the Planet of the Apes featurette).
Disc Six
-
Battle for the Planet of the Apes
(1973 - newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, plus a cast page, theatrical
trailers for this and all of the other Apes
films and the
Fox Interactive's Behind the Scenes of the Planet of the Apes videogame promo).
Discs Seven-Ten
-
Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series
(1974 - includes all 14 episodes in the original full frame video with Dolby Digital mono audio, plus photo galleries and
TV spots) - this is basically the same as the previous 4-disc DVD release of the TV series, but the photo galleries and TV spots are new to this edition.
Discs Eleven-Twelve
-
Return to the Planet of the Apes: The Complete Animated Series
(1975 - includes all 13 episodes in their original full frame video with Dolby Digital mono audio).
Disc Thirteen
- Tim Burton's
Planet of the Apes
(2001 - anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio, plus extras) - note that this is identical
to Disc One of the previous DVD release of this film.
Disc Fourteen
- Tim Burton's
Planet of the Apes Bonus Disc
(with additional extras) - note that this is identical to Disc Two of the previous DVD release of this film.
As you can see, what's new in The Ultimate DVD Collection
are the new anamorphic transfers of the four classic
Apes
films that have previously been available in letterboxed widecreen only, along with the complete animated TV series (its
first appearance on DVD and exclusive to The Ultimate DVD Collection
) and a couple new extras on the 1974 live-action TV series. All of this comes with a special "ape" display case
designed to replicate the original mask designs from the classic films. This is the kind of packaging that Fox has previously released in Japan only (with
I, Robot
and
The Alien Quadrilogy
), so you've got to at least give the studio credit for making it available to U.S. fans as well (expensive though it
is). Here's a picture of the packaging...
For those not quite ready to part with $180, Fox is also releasing a 6-disc Planet of the Apes: The Legacy Boxset
(SRP $49.98), which will include all five of the original
Apes
films, along with a bonus disc containing the
Behind the Planet of the Apes
documentary, trailers for all of the other Apes films and the
Fox Interactive's Behind the Scenes of the Planet of the Apes
videogame promo. We believe the classic films will all be the newly remastered anamorphic widescreen versions.
And for those simply wanting to add the later films to their libraries in better quality one at a time,
Battle for the Planet of the Apes,
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
,
Conquest of Planet of the Apes and
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
will all be re-released as stand-alone versions on 3/28 as well (SRP $14.98 each). These will each be the same as the
movie discs contained in The Ultimate Collection
, with newly remastered anamorphic widescreen video and the same extras.
Finally, just for kicks, Fox will release Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes
on UMD format for Sony's PSP on 3/28 as well (SRP $19.98). Whew!

Just been comparing the pencils of page 2 and 3 to the inked
versions, I notice that you don't make many changes Neil. How do you
find inking ? Do you see it as a task that completes the work or is
it something else. I've never been happy with my pen and ink stuff
and found that if I penciled tight the ink line would come out
quite dead yet if I penciled loose I'd find myself in a pickle
possibly because there was a lack of info in them when it came to
inking. I've always admired some one like Milton Caniff who with
minimal penciling could produce wonderfully vibrant finnished ink
drawings which looked so simple and easy.

(using a light box) but I do find it a bit of a task as all I am

It's interesting to see how a lot of modern comics are almost
missing out on the inking stage, just beefing up the pencils in
photo shop and going straight to the colouring. Looking at allstar
Superman #2, with art by Frank Quitely that came out this week, it
looks like thats what's been done there. The colourist gets to
define space and form, traditionly the job of the inker. The problem
I've always had with inking, in the comic book sense, is how to keep
it from becoming a task, usually I end up with a loose pen and ink
line but when I look at the drawing later I spot how bad the
draughtmanship is underneath. I've even started to re-draw complete
panels when I'm inking, which turns into a right mess:)

-- Very true, exactly what it looks like was done with the new
Revolution on the POTA comic, which is not a bad thing (except maybe
for all the specialist inkers out there!)

-- Which is why I like to spend as much time as possible getting the
pencils right before I even think about inking. Once I have them tight
enough it is just a matter of 'tracing the lines' and filling in the
black areas using my light box (which is also why I prefer working on
paper and not board.)

.htmlWhat - like the Statue of Liberty?!?!? ;)
The image of SF with no ocean is how Dave Ballard started this
story. I think it is wonderful, and Neil compliments the idea
extremely well.
Maybe whatever caused this is a weapon far more advanced than "the
bomb" or a combination of pollution, global freezing, and many other
things to come in our future that are unknown to us.
But if I remember Dave right the idea was that SF with no water
would look cool.
And it sure does - eerie and spooky.
By the way, Dave's story was about the 3 fugitives roaming through
SF being recognised and revered, then discovering on Alcatraz there
was a monument to Burke, Virdon and Jones. Because Neil had already
put in months of research into SF and Alcatraz, the story I had in
mind was compromised. I wanted the 3 to wander into Texas, where
they were looking for NASA sites, and stumble across people THEY
recogmise (whom they immediately assume to be DESCENDANTS of people
they knew - until Virdon runs into his WIFE!). Of course the twist
is that there are an odd bunch of grave-robbers cloning people
(using futuristic cloning technologies) to develop a human army.
Oh well.....
Still, gotta love the visuals we end up with for Going Home.

I would think that in a major nuclear war San Francisco would be a prime target for total destruction, much like New York. But even if it wasn't, isn't the TV series set a thousand years in the
future? I don't believe our structures could survive a thousand years without falling apart. The concrete would crumble, buildings would collapse, the bridges too would rust and fall down, and in the
case of San Francisco don't forget about earthquakes.
Your drawing of the city, while very nice, looks like something out of the Wizard of Oz, the city in pristine shape.

put in months of research into SF and Alcatraz, the story I had in
mind was compromised.
Funny, I've had an idea for a sequel to the TV show that would have Alan and Burke eventually finding an intact "Icarus" ship and blasting off into the future and saving the world from the destruction of
the Doomsday Bomb -- and it would start with the three fugitives traveling to Las Vegas! Lots of ideas for great visuals with Las Vegas.

I could look at pencils all day, :) I think one of the fasinating
aspects of any art is how the artist "completes " the work, what
choses he makes to get there, each persons different !!
In the old Turner room at the Tate gallery, lots of the work doesn't
have those great big ornate picture frames on them so you can actually
see the edge of the canvas on the stretcher. This is great because you
get to see the various layers and underpainting which would normally
be covered by the frame. I do get some odd looks when I'm looking at
the side of the canvas rather than the front however :)

Could SF have been hit with a Neutron bomb, ( Have I spelt that
right?) rather than a standard nuke. You know the type that kills
people but leaves buildings etc pretty much intact. Just a thought.

I was reading

they just have not yet announced it.
Looks like no

I would think that in a
major nuclear war San Francisco would be a prime target for total destruction,
much like New York. But even if it wasn't, isn't the TV series set a
thousand years in the future? I don't believe our structures could
survive a thousand years without falling apart. The concrete would
crumble, buildings would collapse, the bridges too would rust and fall down,
and in the case of San Francisco don't forget about earthquakes.

I read it. My vision of San Francisco after a thousand years, and even if it had never been nuked, would be of a place were all the building were heaps of broken concrete and bricks, perhaps a few steel girder
structures still standing, and the Golden Gate Bridge would have long ago rusted and collapsed, and on top of all that nature would have taken over and vegetation would be everywhere, perhaps even a forest. You
wouldn't even see that the city was once there until you were actually on top of it.
Much more visually interesting, don't you think?

We based our
vision of SF on:
(1) the TV
Show - it shows SF in one of the episodes (where Burke and Urko get to know each
other?);
(2) the MAP
on Urko's wall.
While we are
trying to "improve" on the TV Show, we are also acknowledging it existed.
So if we have seen SF and there is a look about it - we can't really re-write
that.
Rory, think
about what I have written and you will see that (without trying to answer much)
I have looked at what I call the GAPING holes in the TV Show - the idea of
"getting back"....how the hell can they without a time machine? The whole
fugitive running around in circles thing - surely they want to settle somewhere
and find a new life.....or the ONE of them who CAN physically "get back" to home
(Galen) - why would't he?
Going Home is
CLOSE to the TV Shw and it does not WRENCH us into another environment.....but
another environment is on the way and it should be more
exciting.
It is a
transition story!

very forested, but perhaps you Aussies don't know that?

I don't think this stuff

I think Neil is a very good
artist and his work is great, BUT you guys should think about what you're
doing more. Don't be slaves of what you saw in the TV show.
Improve upon it. Being Aussie Down Under Dudes you guys might what to go
for a more Mad Max look to things. The three Mad Max movies were better

Mike,
I have to
disagree there.
I have no
evidence, but I believe the POTA apes are EVOLVED. Whether through a
process of evolution or radiation or genetic manipulation, to me these apes are
not supposed to be LANCELOT LINK.
Is there any
evidence either way on this?
